Apollo: VII – XVII

Photography has become a crucial technique for documenting the history of mankind. The early exploration of space is one such historical event, unrivalled among humanity’s achievements. Fortunately, the skill and daring of a very particular group of ‘photographers’, the Apollo astronauts, were able to bring back beautiful, moving and instantly recognizable images. It is these images that created a new understanding to what it means to be human, living on this planet and its relation to the sun and the stars.

This book presents 225 of these photographs in large print format. Restoring imagery from the original scans of 70mm film rolls the astronauts shot during the program. The book contains a variety of images, ranging from shots taken through the windows of the Command Module of the specular views found on the Earth’s surface, surreal and abstract black and white photography of the lunar surface, to photographs of each of the 12 men in their space suits walking on the surface of the moon.

The book also has a unique and exclusive short essay written by Apollo 7 astronaut, Walt Cunningham, who flew on the very first manned Apollo mission. The essay focuses on his pioneering experimentation and testing of the Hasselblad camera that flew with him on board. It was his endeavours that created the foundations for his fellow Apollo astronauts.

Mehr als 50 Jahre nach der 1. Mondlandung kommen endlich die Orginal-Bilder der NASA wieder auf den Markt. Dies ist wiederum ein schöner, aber teurer Prachtband geworden. Wegen der Eigentümlichkeit der Hasselblad-Kamera, die die Astronauten während des Apollo-Programms benützt haben, wurde das Format des Bandes an den Fotos angepasst, die quadratische Bildausschnitte benützt haben. Der Band kommt fast ohne längere Texte aus, jedes Bild wird aber genau erklärt, das Vorwort des Apollo VII-Astronauten Walt Cunningham preist nochmals die Fotografien der Astronauten ebenso wie diese phantastischen Kameras der Firma Hasselblad, die extra für die Mondmissionen gebaut wurden. Der Band zeigt die Geschichte des Apollo-Programms von Apollo VII bis Apollo XVII alleine anhand der gemachten Fotos, die auch die ikonographischen Aufnahmen beinhalten, wie der Erdaufgang bei Apollo 8, die Aufnahme von Buzz Aldin und der erste Fußabdruck eines Menschen auf dem Mond bei Apollo 11 etc.pp.; sie werden hier in großformatigen Aufnahmen präsentiert. Bei Apollo 11 wundert es mich immer noch, dass es kaum Aufnahmen von Neil Armstrong auf dem Mond gibt, es scheint nur ein einziges Bild zu geben, wo er sich in der Sichtblende von Aldrins Helm spiegelt...
Der Band ist wirklich ein Fest für jeden Weltraum-Begeisterten und auch für Fotografie-Fans, denn diese Aufnahmen werden in die Geschichte eingehen und die Menschheit lange erhalten bleiben.
Gut fand ich auch am Ende eine spezielle Würdigung der Kameras der Firma Hasselblad, die Filme von Eastman Kodak und die Objektive von Carl Zeiss.
Das einzige Manko fand ich, sind die vielen leeren Seiten, die hätten noch mit weiteren Aufnahmen gefüllt werden können, denn die NASA hat wohl noch tausende von Bildern in ihren Archiven...

Ein sehr schöner Bildband zum Apollo-Projekt, der ausgewählte Fotos von den Apollo Missionen VII - XVII enthält.
Zu jeder der Missionen werden einige Erläuterungen gegeben und die teilnehmenden Astronauten vorgestellt. Ausführlicher geht man noch auf die Entstehung der Fotos ein: Kameras, Training und Support für die Astronauten. Es macht sehr viel Spaß, sich in die Bilder zu vertiefen. Am besten haben mir die doppelseitigen Aufnahmen mit Mondrover gefallen und natürlich die ikonischen Aufnahmen, z.B. von der Erde und eines Fußabdrucks auf dem Mond.
Der Text ist übrigens in Englisch, es haben aber nur vielleicht 10 Prozent der Seiten überhaupt einen Text in diesem Bildband.

Beautifully bound and printed 'coffee table' volume of Apollo Program photographs, all taken by the mission astronauts in Earth or Lunar orbit, and on The Moon's surface.

The heavy paper used is wonderful and the reproductions are crisp and perfect. This is a book I'll return to, again-and-again. There's an excellent section at the back of the book about the cameras developed and employed by Apollo, plus the lenses and special film canisters and the film itself.

Despite the glorious presentation, Michael Light's Full Moon (1999) remains my all-time favourite of the genre. That despite the paper quality used being nothing like that used on Apollo: VII - XVII. Full Moon though has a wider choice of images (including many which are cheerfully a little rough-and-ready) and fold-out composite panoramic photos that simply take the breath away.

Still Apollo: VII - XVII is a fabulous volume and every Apollo buff should own a copy.

Fantastico libro fotografico che fa rivivere gli anni 1968-1972 quando l’Uomo visitò la luna. Fra le fotografie “epocali” naturalmente “Earthrise” e “Blue marble” ma forse sono più le altre, magari meno conosciute, spesso sfocate ma pur sempre testimonianze di un’epoca, che affascinano infinitamente.

I am terrified of space and respectfully, those space crafts look like a tin can held together by aluminum foil and duct tape. I have mad respect for those astronauts.

A thunkingly heavy coffee table book that makes you want to wear cotton gloves as you're turning each page lest you damage or stain it somehow. There's plenty of books and movies covering the glitzy side of Apollo, but I think for depth and consideration of photo's this is up there with my all time favourite Apollo book & movie For All Mankind.

Apollo VII-XVII may not have the Brian Eno soundtrack, but it certainly brings the goose bumps and sense of wonder back (it's science after all, not actual magic).
