A powerful and moving first novel set in South Africa, chronicling the innocent and then troubled relationship between the daughter of a landowner and the poor son of a black cook.
I loved this book! I picked it off the bookshelf from our house in Morocco (thank you to whichever visitor left it) and couldn't put it down. It's not high fiction by any means, but it's a long page turner, which I love. The setting was great (South Africa), the characters were so endearing and frustrating, and it was long enough to really get into. I was sad to see it end.
I think my rating would be 3.5/5 The notion who killed isn't even half shocking for the reader as it's for characters. It's good, despite cliché moments (motives). Much better than what the cover suggests.
