Hi Romance Fans,

My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.

I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.

I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.

Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.

Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com

Underwhelming.

Rushed from the start.

Uninteresting main characters.

Formulaic.

The romantic build-up and chemistry was unconvincing/lacking.

This sweet, romantic and slightly silly bit of froth channels the lighter side of Oscar Wilde as in An Ideal Husband or The Importance of Being Earnest.

Comedy of manners with the hero and heroine are a little older than the standard fare. Both are widowed and have been having an affair over the past few years as the heroine has acted as governess/companion to two of the hero's three daughters. An amusing line runs through the story that the hero is inundated with females in his house as the heroine has her two daughters as well. The book starts with the hero relaxing and enjoying the fact his youngest daughter is married and out of the house. Now he can get down to business and marry the heroine. So we have a s loving father, a caring AND honorable lover. What to do and where to go?

A hint of suspense enters when the heroine says no once again to his proposal of marriage. A ridiculous will has bound her to not marrying until her daughters have married as the money is tied up in their dowries.

The heir to the heroine's dead husband comes to town to add some silly drama, but he is a milk-toast villain. He sets some rumors loose about the h to ruin her reputation, but is incapable of true villainy.

The real charm of the story lies with the hero and his love and concern for the heroine. He's a little manic at times, and thinks nothing of challenging anyone who thinks of slandering the heroine.

Not a lot of substance, but what there is refreshing in a sweet hero, a nice heroine, and some minor characters that add a little more spice.

Nice fictional bon bon after the heartburn of ANGST.

For the Love of the Lady (The Noble Hearts Series Book 4) by Callie Hutton

It's been fun watching Selina and Henry tap dance around their feelings. The attraction has always been an obvious one. Now it's time to explore where their hearts can take them. For the Love of the Lady is a hint at goodbye and a glance at a new beginning. Hutton has drawn up an alluring tale of love that could be precious, if the prospective groom can convince his unwilling bride to risk her heart on him. I'm sad to have come to the end of such a captivating series.

____________________________

For the Love of the Lady is a bit of a refreshing change form the previous books in the series. The other books in the series focused on the inexperienced young women in the family falling in love with the first man they feel a physical attraction to. But in this book instead we have a more mature couple that are moving on from relationships from before they met. They have already been together for a few years now, but circumstances now impede them from staying together and marrying.

BUT the story still ends the same way tired way as all the other books in the series. Even though she'd had such a hard time conceiving after she had her twins in her first marriage and had not even had so much as a pregnancy scare during the years she and Henry had already been intimate since she was hired as his daughters' comapion. Now all of a sudden she's fertile...so that she can fit in with this over-used plot device from the previous books? Sigh.

And why would such a villian go to such drastic measures and then...not do the whole villain thing? Then to come back and do something decent and generous and it's supposed to neatly tie things off at the end of the book. He really didn't need to be redeemed, he's not that relevant to the series.

When Marigold talks about visiting the anatomy meusum during her honeymoon, Elise make a comment about that sounding dreadful and Juliet jokes that she must be a changeling, how could she be their sister... is the author forgetting that Elise was a bluestocking that was well versed in many fields, including being well-read about medical matters and reproduction. She should not have felt so faint at the mention of anatomical specimens and Juliet should not be shocked at having a sister like Marigold when Elise is actually quiet like her. It's Juliet herself that is the odd one out. WHY does this author keep forgetting her own characters, it's making me furious.

Two more books and then I can leave this series behind. I do not recommend this series. Maybe the last two will surprise me though.

This novel is a page-turner, I was able to finish it in one lying. However, there were aplenty of things that made me give that rating:

1. Redundancy & Idiocity
- Chapter 2: A chaperone for the chaperone, seems too excessive, don't you think? And a waste of money, too, in my opinion. And here I thought that the reason why Henry, Lord Pomeroy, wanted his daughters to get married because he wanted to be free of the mountain of bills his daughters made. To be honest, I find this logic stupid. Maybe I just don't understand how the minds of the aristocrats of the Regency England worked.

Selina, Lady Crampton, had applied to be a companion, right? So technically, she was a servant, an upper-servant. Thus, whatever she does won't have much impact like the upper crust of the society. It was even fine for a lady to be alone with a male servant.

- Chapter 14: I find Robert's (the new Lord Crampton) surrender bloody easy! He relented because he was scared of Henry's (Lord Pomeroy) next blow??

2. Inconsistency
- Chapter 3: I thought Robert had already paid Selina a visit at the end of Chapter 1. Then how come it was narrated in this chapter that it seemed like he called on her for the first time?

- Chapter 4: In the beginning of this chapter, it was recounted that the Crampton title was a viscount. However, when Selina introduced him to her former charges, he became a Marquess. Probably a typo error.

3. A few things weren't explained
- Chapter 6: How did Henry know that Selina will be in Hatchard's?

- Chapter 14: How did Henry and Selina know which room were Robert and Phoebe (one of Selina's daughter) in?

4. Some things did't add up
- Henry seemed like a sensible father in books 1 to 3. However, in this book, he was an irrational, jealous, immature boy toy.

- Selina was sharing Henry's bed for 3 years, correct? And I didn't have the impression that they were careful whenever they were doing the act. Hence, how come she never got pregnant immediately? I don't think Selina was the problem because she gave birth to her twins at least a year after she got married*. Therefore, I conclude that Henry's seed wasn't as potent as the erstwhile Lord Crampton due to the fact that he was able to impregnate Selina at once and twins at that. LoL! Pardon me. I'm being silly right now.

* Selina was five and thirty, her daughters were six and ten. 35 minus 16 is 19 and she got married at eight and ten. Just do the rest of the math and the complete gestation of babies.

5. The intimate scene was too fast. While I understand that a detailed lovemaking scene is not really important in a romance novel, however, this is not the first time I read a book written by Callie Hutton. All her previous stories have elaborated copulation scenes.

6. In my point of view, this narrative was Henry's karma for finding ways to get rid of his daughters and their mountain of bills. In his "shrewdness" to marry off his three daughters, he gained 4 granddaughters and another wife with twin daughters. As a consequence, he garnered 7 more females for the sake of his freedom. Karma at its finest! LoL

All in all, I think this novel wasn't written by Callie Hutton in the slightest degree. It was a let down like Wagering for Miss Blake. Either this wasn't really Callie Hutton's work or her creative writing skill is degenerating.

Lord Henry Pomeroy sat in his library enjoying a glass of brandy and a good book. With his youngest daughter getting married, things had been hectic but now he could relax. The only thing missing was Lady Selina Crampton, his daughters’ chaperone and companion before they married. She always sat in the library with him, working on her sewing while he read his favorite passages from the book to her. Where was she? When she finally joined him, she handed him her letter of resignation and told her she was quitting. Once again he asked her to marry him, but she refused.

The next day, Lord Henry tried again to talk to her. Finally Selina told him how her deceased husband had set aside a widow’s portion of money for her – but it had all been spent and there was nothing left for her when he died. Another portion was for his daughters’ dowry and their come-outs. But that money would only be given if Selina did not remarry before her daughters. Otherwise a despised 3rd cousin would get everything. He had done this because she did not give him a male heir and thus did not deserve any money. Selina had to leave now so that no society gossip would damage her daughters’ change for an acceptable match.

Henry missed Selina and her daughters very much. He had his solicitor investigate if anything could be done for her, but Lord Crampton was working against them so that he could have the entire wealth. Will Henry be able to resolve the problem so that he and Selina can marry? Will he find someone else to take her place?

I enjoyed this book very much. Not only was it a clever story line, but the humor throughout brings the story alive as the characters become more “real”. With such strict society rules, I was amazed that Henry was so accepting of life’s little oops” moments! He was delightful and perfect for Selina. Get a copy and enjoy the adventure of how all of these things will be resolved. You won’t want to miss it.

Lady Selina Crampton’s job is finished, her job well done and all three daughters of Lord Henry Pomeroys are settled with their new husbands. She has to see to her daughters future. Unfortunately for her life is to be a lonely one. Her deceased husband torments her from the grave with the stipulation of his will - states that if she marries her daughters gets nothing.

Henry is her best friend/lover and the only man she’s loved, but staying in his home isn’t an option. Even though she’s refused his countless proposals she knows they can never be...until her daughters marry their dowries are safe.

I loved reading Selina and Henry finally get their happy ending. I enjoyed the fact that they were a little more mature than the typical younger set. We do have a vilain who tries to get Selina’s money, some intrigue, plenty of humour and witty dialogue keep this story at a fast pace. I loved the surprise ending!

I received a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

Now that Lord Henry Pomeroy’s three daughters are all happily married, he wants to marry their chaperone Lady Selina Crampton. Even though they have lived in the same house, come to know each, and fallen in love, Selina tells him she can’t marry him – yet. It seems that her despicable husband left money for their daughters, only if she didn’t remarry before they found husbands. The solicitors say there is no way to break the condition, there are some ugly rumors about why Selina has left Henry’s household, and the Crampton heir is after a way to get to the money. Henry is lonely, unhappy, and determined to find a way for them to be together, sooner rather than later. Is it possible or will poor Henry be forced to wait?

Henry and Selina are delightful characters. They are just a little older that most in these stories. They are very much in love and have a comfortable relationship. I had to laugh at Henry when Selina and her girls moved out of his house. He had a terrible case of empty nest syndrome. I thoroughly enjoyed this charming and heartwarming story, and the wonderful surprise at the end.

Lady Selina Crampton job is finished she’s seen all of Lord Henry Pomeroy’s three daughters are finally married and happily settled in their own homes. It’s now time for her to move out of his home, but Henry doesn’t want Salina to move he wants her to marry him. She’s been his companion, friend and lover and marriage is not possible and it’s time to tell him why she has refused his numerous offers of marriage. Selina loves Henry, but can't risk her daughter future by being selfish and marry Henry right now. I loved this sweet story of two people in love but they’re not in control of their destiny, Selina’s deceased husband has set certain rules in place and his heir is causing trouble along the way. It’s sweet there are five daughter between them and they practically force them to marry. This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

Loved this book. Quick and easy read. Two people who should be together find a way for it to happen.
Both widowers with grown and almost grown children. Henry is a wonderful hero and will not give up on the happiness he has found with Selina who had been governess to his daughters until the last daughter got married. She immediately gives notice to Henry and moves out to maintain a good reputation for herself and her two 16 year old twins who will have their come-out the next year.
She can not remarry though Henry has asked her repeatedly to do so until the twins are wed due to her horrible husbands will.
The late husband left her nothing and the estate went to a male cousin that he detested who only wants the money from the estate and to spend his time in Greece. The heir also hated the late lord.
It is a good read and well worth your time.

A refreshingly delightful read. Henry, Lord Pomeroy, was like a teenage boy in love for the first time. He made me smile, chuckle and eventually laugh out loud. Lady Selina Crampton was hired by Henry to be a companion and chaperone to his two younger daughters. Selina was widowed and was still being controlled by her despicable husband from the grave.

I loved Callie's writing style and how she slowly developed her characters so well they became dear to me. I absolutely hate how women were treated in this time period but I continue to read Regency romance because I revel in how these women circumvent their situation and manage happiness. This is my first Regency read by Callie Hutton but I know I will read more!

A different story... thank God.
Here the couple is older and more experienced.

Lord Henry Pomeroy has 3 adult daughters. Hired a chaperone, Lady Selina Crampton, to take care of the three girls during the Season, over the last 4 years.
Now the three girls are married. Of course, Lady Selina would be excused from her services, right?

Well, the problem is that over the years, Lord Pomeroy fell in love with the chaperone and wants to make her his wife. It turns out that Selina is reluctant to accept his proposal (but is not reluctant to go to his bed).
Then begins the fight to know how to convince her that it would be more advantageous (for both!) If she agrees to marry him.

I would give the book a 4.3 if the rating scale would permit it.
This is the first book from Ms. Hutton that I have read. I enjoyed her style and nice mix of playfulness between the characters and the drama of the conniving cousin.
I, especially, enjoyed Henry's character. His characterization reminded me of the father in "Cheaper by the Dozen."
I was thrown off in the beginning by Ms. Hutton using three points of view, for I feared there were be multiple ones of which to keep track. I think I would have still preferred two POVs, but, in the end, it was not too distracting.
There were more than a few split infinitives: to not mention, to always be, to even think, to finally arrive, to always blame, etc.

I received a copy from the author; this is my honest review.
-Hutton's stories are usually funny, lightly written, and with an unexpected twist at the end. This one did not disappoint.
-I haven't read the first three books and I wasn't confused but some missing pieces.
-While reading you can see where the story is going - except for the end - but the pace is good, the descriptions are abundant and the language easy.
-I love the part when the five daughters go against their parents and make them marry. It was awkward for them, but really funny for us readers.
-Short and sweet but well worth it.

This is a well written and enjoyable story revolving around Selina who has been the chaperone to Lord Pomeroy’s two daughters as they make their debut. Now they are married and she prepares to leave his home with her own two daughters. Pomeroy has proposed numerous times, she has refused and now she explains why. She can’t marry him right now. To keep from telling any more of the story, at the end there is a happy ending and a new addition to the family. This is a good, clean romance appropriate for any young adult. It is a good read and I would highly recommend it. Love the cover.

I am a huge fan of Callie Hutton's writing style and enjoyed this regency series. Lord Pomeroy's daughters have all been married off and now it's his turn to get hitched. Only, his chosen bride is not as agreeable to the marriage as he might have hoped.

This has been a wonderful series and I hope there are more to come. I am not a big regency fan but Callie writes so well that I read everything she writes. I don't feel hopelessly lost in the nobility when I read these stories. I can't wait to see what she has up her sleeve next. Bravo!

This is a well written story of Henry, Lord Pomeroy and Selina, Lady Crampton. Since Henry's daughters are all married, Selina feels she and her daughters must leave Henry's home. Though Henry and Selina love each other, Selina cannot marry him because of her late husband's will. Then the new Lord Crampton comes back to London needing money. He tries several schemes to gain control of the girls' money from slander to kidnapping. Can Selina and Henry find a way to marry

Henry was superb in this story. I loved having a leading man that was a wonderful step father. Regency is one of my favorite reads. This one had so much humor that I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. There was thrilling drama and, of course, a romance that had me hooked. Callie Hutton does it again! Book gifted to me.

Another Callie Hutton winner. Short story bringing Papa and Selina together. .

ONE GRIP - fix the cover. She has black hair 😂
That was truly my only crit and it’s petty.

The stories interchange and flow so smoothly.. very entertaining and fast pace.. a little intrigue, with a useless semi-bad guy. Just a nice read

great series

So far, I am loving the series. Even though the stories are shorter, they pack a lot of good reading. The characters come alive and make you feel like part of the family. As with the others, a little adventure, romance and bit of steam! Ms. Hutton does not disappoint!!

Lovely romance with mature characters

I love a romance with a slightly older couple, and these two are delightful! This is a lovely story about family, especially a blended one. Of course there had to be the prerequisite black sheep that acts the villain.
