Terrence McNally was an American playwright, librettist, and screenwriter. Described as "the bard of American theater" and "one of the greatest contemporary playwrights the theater world has yet produced," McNally was the recipient of five Tony Awards. He won the Tony Award for Best Play for Love! Valour!
Wow, he's more bizarre than I'd realized! His work is refreshingly absurd, and I love the way it skewers society. This is going to be fun to teach. I'm teaching several of his plays because he's coming to our campus later this semester. (You can check it out at: www.litart.org.)

We read the play "Andre's Mother" aloud in class the other day, and I choked up so much I couldn't even finish reading my part. Lots of tears. Very moving. I'm realizing that early on in his career (60s and 70s) he was writing absurdist plays. But his AIDs-era plays became more earnest and deep.
