Well, the war with the Cas’cadas is going well for the Empire. While the Cas’cadas do occasionally come up with something unique in their tactical strategy, it’s not very often and the Empire can usually figure out what they are up to. Now, it appears that the Cas’cadas are getting desparate and their young emperor is going insane! Yeah, he’s pretty much already gone. With his exeuction of his top Admirals that look at him wrong, things are not going well within the Cas’cadans headquarters. The very young emperor things he’s a military genius when he has no training and even less experience. He’s killing off his most experienced senior advisors so it doesn’t appear that they will have much to fight with before long.

Except, his alien scientist, including some captured humans, have come up with a way to create a mini-supernova within a system that wipes our almost all life. They attack the systems star and over about an hours time, cause it to start ejecting very, very hot plasma which scorches any planet it touches. It’s basically a planet killer and the Cas’cadan emperor is ecstatic with his new “toy”. Yet, Cas’cadan religion forbids the destruction of worlds. They believe that life is sacred and only the Gods can cause a planet to produce life and the Cas’cadans should not destroy all that life leaving the planet baren. It’s a strong belief by most of those who believe in the Gods. But, not all believe that way and apparently the emperor has no problem with destroying any planet in his own empire. As long as he can kill the human Empire forces, he’ll do what it takes.

This is not going well with the rank and file of the Cas’cadan population. To blatantly go against the church is something no other emperor has every done, until now. The emperor has gone so far as to see the destruction of the central church in the Cas’cadan capital with a bomb that his secret police planted and blamed it on the church itself. Of course, no one believes that the church blew it self up. And they are having enough of this insane emperor.

Still, a trap is set to destroy the planet currently occupied by a majority of Maurids. These are the aliens that have been providing a lot of intel to the empire. They want to be free and are earning their freedom by backing the humans. Still, their worlds are under the Masters, i.e., Cas’cadans, but they do have a lot of leeway in what they do, or so they did. Now that the insane emperor suspects them of treason to his empire, he wants to wipe them off their planet while destroying a huge fleet of humans coming to their rescue.

Will his plan work? Emperor Sean Ogden Lee Romanov has to save his allies. He cannot let over a billion Maurids die just because they were found out. So, he puts together a plan of his own. You’ll need to read the book to find out which emperor’s plan succeeds.

I can hardly overstate how much I have liked this book series. I was a bit hesitant after having read the first book in the series but I am really happy that I persisted. Out of the 14 books in the series 12 of them have received a 5 out of 5 star rating from me.

I am not going to rehash everything that I have already said in previous reviews but just say that the world building, the characters, the fleet and ground action and the story in general is simply excellent. Doug Dandridge can easily be compared to other great authors in this genre like for instance David Weber and in addition he does not suffer from the verbosititis and never ending talk talk talk that is afflicting Weber’s later works.

In this book The New Terran Empire are finally getting the upper hand in the war in a way that are starting to make a change of underwear in order among the Ca’cadasan management.

As we know from previous books the young new Ca’cadasan emperor, who usurped the throne, is severely lacking in the grey cell department and calls for drastic measures. Measures that do not sit well with powerful factions in his own empire. Thus the scene is set for a very large shipment of caca (pun intended) to be delivered to a very big fan.

As usual we get to see the story from the perspective of our various heroes of course but also from the perspective of the Ca’cadasans. The latter being especially interesting in this installment in the series. Lot’s of combat action of course, both in space and on the ground.

However, events are set in motion in this book that starts to twist the story in a new direction. I’m sure most of you can guess the general direction of these events but I am still not going to spill the beans and divulge further details. Too much of a spoiler.

Overall another great book in the series. If I should complain about anything it would be that the young Ca’cadasan emperors mad behavior is perhaps a bit over the top really and also that the rather dramatic events in the book went a wee bit too fast. I mean, we’re talking empire shaking events here and they just seemed to happen in a very short period of time.

Anyway, still a 5 out of 5 book for me.

When you can win! Do so!

I count 3 stories in this book, the trouble on the Caca home world..The fight of the sun super nova, and the ground fighting on the target planet. The author weaves the stories together with such precision and excitement. You will recognize many of our favorite hero's here in this book. I am just sorry that it took me so long to read it.

Wow - Great Addition to Series!

Book 14 gets right back on track with the main story line. Great story telling, action, and heroism. And not all the heroes are human!

We learn a lot more about the enemy, and their young impulsive emperor.

I can’t wait till the next book!

Just a side story blown up to full book size. Reminds me of low quality tv shows, airing an unattached episode just to fill a gap.
