Perfect, perfect read for the days I was camping, paddling, and hiking along the Gunflint Trail. The stories of the people who were legendary, and why, were as interesting as the stories of famous people who visited. I enjoyed any and all information about Native people of the region, even tho’ this was a white history. My favorite chapter was about the forest - the plants, ecological changes, fires, budworm, and blowdowns, as well as what the birds tell us. Right after reading that chapter, I hiked some of the Caribou Rock trail, and what I had just read was illustrated all around.

My family has been going to the Gunflint for decades but I really knew little about its history, its geology, birds, early settlers, attempts at mining, etc. this is a good source for that information; i found the stories of early settlers quite entertaining. I recommend for anyone heading up to the Gunflint.
