The Hunters

Hunter's Edge

Rate this book
Some love can last a lifetime-their love was destined to last longer. Angel's first words to Kel were I'm going to marry you. She was seven at the time. He was eight. And he didn't laugh when she spoke the words. Best friends as children, lovers as young adults, they had an unexplainable bond. Their future looked set. Until the night they were attacked by a creature that couldn't exist. Angel survived the attack-barely. But Kel didn't. Or at least, nobody thought he did. His body was never found and Angel's life would never be the same. The attack might not have killed Kel's body, but it sure as hell killed his heart. Twelve years later, there's one part of his former life that he can't move past. Angel. He can't let her go, but he can't have her either. She doesn't even realize he is still alive. But when a threat surfaces, Kel's willing to do whatever it takes to protect Angel. Even if it drives them both to the edge of insanity and back. Warning: Some violence. Some sex. Some bloody violence. Even a little bit of bloody sex. Not all of the sex is between the hero and the heroine, even though every time that happens, the hero closes his eyes and thinks of England Angel. Not exactly a traditional romance, but I promise it does end HEA.

I am wavering between a 2 star rating of - it was okay & a 3 star rating of - I liked it, on this book.

A 2 star seems a bit harsh but based on the description of what a 2 star says then this book for me is a 2 star book.

I started this book with such high hopes. I love a premise where the lead characters meet and fall in love from kids.

This book started off amazingly well with how Kel & Angel met aged 7 and all through to age 19 when this book fell apart for me.

A self sacrificing hero is just not attractive to me and that is how Kel was portrayed throughout this book. I never felt he was a worthy hero to the Hunters and certainly not to Angel. He never did anything with his life, he was constantly being treated like a child and looked after, forced to feed. He never embraced his change in life and did something meaningful with his life. There should have been more to the Hunters and what they did. I never felt like I got to know any of the secondary characters. What I did learn I am not sure I want to learn more by pursuing their books.

I like my characters in any story to have substance and they need to connect with me as a reader. Kel & Angel did not do that for me. I never felt a connection between them after the incident.

Angel, I never got to know her. She did not seem to have a life. I was not sure what she did for a living other than help Kel's dad Jake out but for 12 years what did she do with herself, who where her friends, what happened to her mom and step dad, step sister and brother? And because of this I never connected with her.

There was a lot of blanks for me as a reader. I like to have my questions answered and I like to "see" the drama and the fights. I was also looking for some detail on the fight Kel had with the Rogue. The big reveal was lackluster for me, I expected more of a fight between Kel and Angel.

The end was just too weird for me, all of a sudden Kel decides that he wants Angel and bam there you go, the end. It felt superficial to me. Also how did she find Kel? What was different about Angel and what happens to them as a couple?.

This book left me feeling very let down on the details.

Kelvin Saunders and Angelica Pierson have known each other since they were eight years old. They have an incredible bond that grows stronger with each year. Kel has wonderful parents, while Angel's mother barely notices her daughter, especially after her father dies in a car accident. Kel is there to help her pick up the pieces, and by the time they are both nineteen, they are boyfriend and girlfriend. Kelvin would love nothing more than to marry Angel because she is his whole life, and Angel feels the same way about Kelvin. Angel wants to give Kel her virginity, but Kel wants to wait till the time is perfect. Things couldn't be better between the two until one night everything changes.

Angel is babysitting her stepbrother and stepsister when she feels something bad is coming her way. Before Kel can come and protect her, the evil menace she has felt is at her door and invades her house. He knocks out all the electricity and uses his powers to make sure the children are asleep while he has fun with Angel. This monster has glowing eyes, long sharp teeth, and speaks in her head. He wants to gorge himself on her blood and perhaps use her body for his pleasure. Angel can hardly fight him as he decides he wants her to drink his blood in order to change her into what he is. Angel almost gives in, but Kel comes to her rescue. Kel is able to save Angel, but sacrifices himself as the monster carries him off, makes him drink his blood, and leaves him for dead. All hope is lost for Kel as he starts to change into a vampire. Rafe and his wife Sheila, two vampires who are known as hunters, find him. They fight the evil vampires known as ferals who prey on innocent humans. A feral was the one to attack Angel and Kel, and now Rafe and Shelia will try to save Kel and make him a hunter like themselves.

Twelve Years Later…

All Kel thinks about is Angel, the woman he left behind because of what he has become. He is barely surviving because he refuses to drink from any human or any other supernatural being that is willing to bare his or her neck for him. He knows all hope is lost and has constant dreams of Angel and her pain. Their bond is stronger than ever, and because of that, when Kel suffers, Angel does also. She assumes she is going crazy because she knows Kel is dead, but she sees hallucinations showing blood and death. Kel would love nothing more than to change her into a vampire, but it is too dangerous, so he denies himself their love and even the most essential of needs. When he meets Phoebe, a werewolf, the blood lust is too much for Kel to deny. Soon he goes to Phoebe for blood and rough sex even though Angel is always in the back of his mind.

The same feral who almost killed Angel and made Kel into a vampire is back on the loose and is again killing till he can get to Angel and finish what he started twelve years ago. Kel, with the help of another hunter named Toronto, will watch over Angel and wait till they can kill the feral. Kel can hardly stay away from Angel as it is, and to watch over her and not touch her is too painful to bear. Angel's heart continues to long for Kel, and when the feral vampire reaches her, Kel has no choice but to try to save her, even if it means coming out of the dark and showing her he is still walking the Earth. He still wants her more than his very soul.

Shiloh Walker can sure write fabulous romances, and HUNTER'S EDGE is no exception. The love between Angel and Kel is so rich and moving. I especially liked the build-up to the present and how we see their relationship transform from friends to soul mates. When Kel is taken from Angel, it is gut wrenching. Shiloh's words tell so much, and I felt both Angel's and Kel's pain immensely.

Kel's unhealthy relationship with Phoebe, the shape-shifting bartender, is an interesting subplot. Their relationship is a total opposite from the one Kel had with Angel. When Kel decides things with Phoebe are wrong and too dangerous, some interesting fireworks happen between the two, and not the good kind. The vampire hunter, Toronto, is the voice of reason for Kel and one character I hope gets his own story in the future. The feral vampire is so insane with an unholy lust that when he strikes against Angel for a second time, the fight scene is one that may bring you to your feet cheering as Kel and Toronto take care of business.

HUNTER'S EDGE is a worthy paranormal romance with a great love between two people who experience the harshest of circumstances. Angel and Kel have such an unbelievable love and passion for one another that only an author like Shiloh Walker can deliver. Don't pass up this stellar paranormal romance!

Shiloh Walker writes interesting, multi-dimensional characters, passionate, touching love stories and heaps misfortunes on her characters with an abandon that can make Lora Leigh look positively sun shiney. Hunter's Edge is no exception. I'm not sure where this falls in the Hunters series but it tells the star crossed (or feral vampire cursed, if you will) story of Angel a human with psychic abilities and Kel, the boy, later the man she loves. One night, Angel is attacked by a feral vampire and nearly killed. Kel tries to save her, is gravely wounded and saved by Hunters who arrive on the scene a bit late. However, in the process he becomes a vampire and Hunter himself. Unable to be with the woman he loves, he lives a miserable life, still connected to Angel who is even more miserable. She believes Kel is dead but is feeling his feelings and dreaming of his experiences. Since he is a vampire and a hunter, those images are bizarre and frightening. And since she has no idea why she has the strange thoughts and feelings, she at times feels she is becoming insane.

For 12 years, they are apart and miserable until Angel is again in danger and Kel is determined to protect her. Did I mention they were miserable? That was my biggest stumbling block to really liking this story. The majority of it has Kel and Angel separated and depressed as all get out. Ms. Walker does a fantastic job of describing depression and withdrawal from the world both in this book and others I've read. The problem for me is I don't find extended descriptions of depression to be especially interesting or enjoyable. Since over half of the book is about depressed people separated from the one they love, the plot dragged at times.

There just wasn't enough time with Kel and Angel having some well deserved happiness and enjoying their love for each other. Even the happy ending is quite brief. I didn't have a sense of how Angel and Kel were going to live their lives out now that they were reunited. Plus, a plot element regarding their future together is suddenly tossed out at the very end but not explained. So the story feels unfinished -- after all that misery. I've read a couple books that take place after Hunter's Edge (I think), but I don't recall an explanation for this plot element. Or maybe, since I didn't know the characters, any reference flew over my head.

I was again taken by one of Ms. Walker's pivotal secondary characters. This time it was Toronto, the enigmatic shape shifter. Not sure if he has his own story, but I'd like to read it if he does. Just hope, he isn't given reason to be moping for a good part of the book.

All in all, an interesting if at times unsatisfying installment by a talented writer.

The chemistry between Kel and Angel was great. The writing was engaging. However, I thought the reasoning behind Kel's choices and actions were ridiculous. He annoyed me.

As a personal preference I also wasn't keen on the idea of Angel ageing through the 12 years and not Kel. It ends up being quite a large gap in their ages.

"Hunter's Edge" by Shiloh Walker. A stand alone book in The Hunters series.

**NOTE** This book should be read in between "Hunter's Salvation" and "Hunter's Need". The main characters are new to the series but the secondary characters in this book have been introduced in the previous books.

I really really liked this book! It was written so differently than all the others. When I say that I mean the storyline is vastly different than anything I've ever read.

It starts out with the main characters, Kel and Angel, being 8 years old! It follows them through their teenage years, focusing on key moments in their relationship. Then they age a few years and a traumatic event happens that split the couple apart for years. For most of the chapters Kel and Angel don't even see each other which is very different from any other story I've read. (ie: most books have the main characters meeting and falling for each other right away) Following the life of Kel and Angel was so interesting! And when they meet each other again...WOW! Such and exciting and action packed event! The love Kel and Angel have for each other tugs at your heartstrings from the very beginning.

I loved this book!

I absolutely loved this read - although sometimes I could bypass the erotic part and just get to the story but in this case, it is part of what makes the characters stronger. To be able to feel for a character shows just how talented Shiloh Walker is as an author. I've been reading the Hunter series for awhile now and it's my goal to finish each and every one of them - plus all her other series!

Although this could be classified as a standalone novel, it falls before Hunters Fall (#13) and Hunter's Rise (#14). I would suggest reading this series from the beginning so you can get a gist on the characters.

Even though I knew the ending of this book, I enjoyed reading the complications and heartache between Kel and Angel. I found myself frustrated and empathetic to both the main characters for what 'fate' threw at them. I could not put the book down and when I finally finished - Sunday day and evening had already passed!

I highly recommend this one to lovers of this series and for those who like the paranormal genre.

It was ok. Basically........ Girl meets boy. Girl proclaims love for boy. They love each other and have some sort of bond where they can always sense each other. Girl gets attacked by feral Vampire. Boy intervenes. Boy becomes Vampire. Girl doesn't know. They spend years pining after each other. They reunite. Boy says he loves her can't be around her, because he's dangerous. Girl doesn't understand. Boy says the same thing. Girl gives ultimatum. They realize they need each other. Girl may no longer be human.

I was looking forward to this story having read this series out of order I already heard of this couple and that they had been attacked as teenagers. I was very curious about Angels abilities since there not really mentioned in the other books I read. I loved the whole soulmates since they were human story line, to top it they have a connection since they were children. It was so ahhh romantic. I do wonder how they managed to deny each other for so long that didn't fit for me totally. Otherwise this was a great story.

This is a really sad and haunting love story. I spent most of the book reading through tear filled eyes. Angel and Kel are just left broken by the attack and this book is the story of their healing but it is not an easy story to read just because of the emotion that is generated. What a testament to Shiloh Walker's writing.

First of her novels I've read. Picked it up randomly as one of my summer reads.
Storyline was good, enjoyable characters, slow pace at first, but picked up after a few chapters, and had a good ending.
Two kids destine to be together have their lives altered by a rogue vampire. After twelve years torn apart, thinking one of them was dead, they are brought back together and find the love never died.

This was a slightly different book from the other hunter series. Kel and Angel have been in love since childhood and planned to spend the rent of their lives together, but a feral vampire had other plans, creating an untenable situation for them. How it is resolved is fairly predictable, but still a good read.

I know some people think that this book isn't as good as it could be because over half the book is them separated and miserable. Well, I'm a huuuge fan of being together from day 1, and I've never liked it when the h/H are separated for any period of time, but in this book, it worked. It didn't bother me at all, and it went by so fast, I highly recommend this book.

I read this book expecting a lot of romance but I did not find that. I believe Ms. Walker's writing is intended tours the teens age young adults group. There was suspense but a lot of violence and raw sex but not much of romance. I love paranormal romance stories but this book did not catch my attention!!!!Sorry!!!!

Though the ending was a little abrupt, leaving me with some unanswered questions, I still think this is worthy of 5 stars. And a box of tissues.
