The Baylan Chronicles is an alien romance series written in third person by Ella Blake. If I remember correctly, all of Ella’s other alien romance novels are written in the first person format, which I prefer. Novels written in third person often feel too far removed from the characters. However, Ella has managed to pull it off without leaving the readers becoming too distant from the story. This series takes place in present day, with Earth still believing that we are alone in the universe.
The book Drace follows an alien named Drace who’s a King of the Baylan species. The Baylans live on giant spaceships opposed to their home planet for safety and security. Drace left his mother ship and came to Earth to do recon; studying Earth’s culture to determine the best strategy of making contact in order to negotiate a trade agreement for our resources. He was captured and experimented on for months by an agency referred to as “Department 6.” He escaped imprisonment and was found by the human Rachel Harkett, who was working late one night and opened her door to help an injured man. After unintentionally placing Rachel in danger and drawing attention to her, Drace chose to help her survive by bringing her back to his mother ship. A mate bond gets established by the markings on his body, and they fall in love with each other along the way of physically being unable to keep their hands off each other.
Overall, it’s the exact same story that I have read 100 times. Same book, different cover. Boy meets girl, girl gets in trouble, boy saves girl, boy and girl fall in love and live happily ever after while one of them fight their feelings along the way. Rachel’s character annoyed the shit out of me throughout the entire book. She was too weak and doubted too much. There were WAY too many “I can’t”s coming from her. I can’t love him, he’s an alien! I can’t be a queen, I’m not a leader! I can’t leave Earth, I’m a weak-ass nobody! Mmmkay. Then just lay down and die then, b*tch. Drace will literally be the only one who will care when you’re gone. Ugh. Drama mama with that one. Anyway, I digress.
While I do enjoy how this series is written (so far), I think Ella Blake’s Lords of Destra series has been the best of her craft. This particular book wasn’t my favorite, but I have high hopes for redemption. I mean… they can’t be any worse… right? (God, I hope I didn’t just jinx it!) Here’s to seeing what the next book in this series has in store…
