Gregor Mitchell desperately wants a do-over. If he could just trade his ghostly existence for a couple of days of mortality, he’d go back to the dreadful years after Scotland’s tragic loss at Culloden. There, he might finally prove his worth to himself, his country, and those still fighting for its freedom.
Ainsley Edwards is willing to risk everything–including her family–to smuggle escaping Jacobite warriors to safety. But in a world of deception and lies, trust carries a high price.
When Gregor upsets Ainsley’s carefully constructed facade, everything could come crashing down around them.
Sometimes, the cost of love is too high. Will theirs be strong enough to rise from the ashes?
Jo Jones lives in the red-rock area of southern Utah. Her roots go deep into the red soil of cattle country, tended by four generations of ranchers.
She also keeps a tight hold on the ancestral string of her Scottish heritage and keeps a piece of her heart in the Highlands.
With a lifetime love for reading, and writing, she has a soft spot for richly detailed historical novels with characters who draw their strength and purpose from the land and their environment. And of course, each other.
Love the Novelettes in Which the Action Stays in Scotland and Olden Times
I liked that this novelette was set in the period after Culloden and that a ghost that fell there got his chance at life, love, and a bit of revenge in Scotland with a spirited Scottish girl who with her brother and father was carrying on the resistance against the hated British oppressors. The only quibble is that Coira the traitorous serving maid's fate was glossed over. It would have been good to see her get her just deserts.
This is book 43 in the series. You will want to read the first short story, The Gathering, for the background information on the Muir witch before you start the rest of the series. After that, each one can be read as a standalone.
After reading Rhys and not feeling connected to the ghosties , I hesitated to go ahead and read another one. I am slowing catching up on the stories that have been released. (Just over half) That being said , I am glad that I did. Gregor was a doll! His regret is that he was not able to do for Scotland what he felt he should. Soni makes it possible for him to do just that. Along the way, if he does what he should he will earn his boon.
This is another "best ever" addition to this great series. The writing is sensitive and descriptive. It shows the deplorable, cruel and greedy behaviour of a vindictive army. In contrast there is the incredible kindness and courage of the folk trying to help those in need and to build a better world. I had to read it quickly to find out what happens to our heroes and now I can settle back and read it again to enjoy and appreciate all the details
Beautifully written. Finally, something more in depth of what happened to the Scottish people, their struggles, their hardships, their courage, their love for their countrymen, and country, as they try to salvage their beloved Scotland following the aftermath of the defeat at Culloden. Wonderful, fast-paced story with a twist. One of the best in the series.
Another great and exciting ghost adventure, this time taking us just a couple years past the battlefield. The characters were interesting, exciting, and Very loveable. I always like the epilogue each book has. Keep writing, all of you!
This is about Gregor, who never had a family and lived on the streets until he joined the favorites and found friends and a cause to live and fight for. And Ainsley, whose family ran an inn and underground railway for Scots trying to escape the British. This story is great reading. I love this author's style of writing.
This has been a fun series to read. Most of the "ghosts" end up in the 21st century trying to navigate the foreigness of their new chance at life. It was nice to have Gregor sent closer to his own time. It gave the author an opportunity to share more about Scottish life after the defeat at Culloden Moor.
Enjoyed reading this story. Although, every book has it's own adventure, this one seems even more so with the placement in time, History telling, and odd relationships within. Love the ending.
Jo Jones does this series proud with her contributing books. The story of Gregor and Ainsley is sweet and stubborn and of course happy in the end. The secondary characters are very well written too. Can’t wait for #44!!
43 down 26 to go. This is a very different Ghostly short-term the survivors of the great massacre at Culloden. Two lost survivors destined to and for each other. Great story and interesting storyline of the british.
He is a highlander ghost who lived as a ghost on the moor for 3 century and she is a brave lass form the 1700s and after the war helping her fellow Scot. Read on for more details.
This is another winner. I highly recommend all the authors and all the books in this series. No matter which author writes this series they all have been wonderful fun and entertaining every one. I have read all of them. Diana Romano
I just love these little romantic tales of the ill fated highlanders. This one was fun, exciting and touching. I read it in one sitting. 😁. I have been reading them all!
This series is one I wish could go on forever. All of the writers complement the story line and each other seamlessly. I've laughed, I've cried, I've lost sleep. Awesome.
