In the Wonderland of Numbers

Rate this book
Come to an exciting journey into the Wonderland of Numbers. 'As for numbers, they hate nobody and nobody can afford to hate them,' says Neha's father, who is a supportive parent trying to re-instill confidence in his child. Apart from revealing the specialties of each individual number, from zero to nine, and little mathematical tricks, Shakuntala Devi has underscored another very important aspect. It is upto parents and teachers to ensure that children are initiated into a lifelong love affair with numbers. An engaging child, Neha, suddenly starts lagging in Maths when a new Maths teacher arrives and she starts converting her fear of the teacher into a terror of Maths. Matters touch the nadir when she scores a zero in a test. On the way home that day, she meets with an accident. While her parents and teachers suffer an anxious vigil till she regains consciousness, she travels to the Kingdom of Zero through her sub-conscious mind. In the Wonderland of Numbers is the story of Neha's adventures in the Kingdom of Zero.

Shakuntala Devi is my first favourite author. I read this book when I was 6 years old. This book talks about numbers in a very interesting way through a story of girl. If you love numbers or want to learn math easily, please read this book.

A complete let down

The book is one long story with v little of maths. The protagonist says the author, was confident in addition subtraction etc but, felt challenged in handling fractions. Yet the book shares no method to handle maths of that level. Rather it ends with the protagonist correctly replying that any number multiplied by 0,is 0! It is a long boring book, a complete waste of time

Splendid story

A nice story book to teach Mathematics to kids and make them love it. Entertaining, light-hearted. Reminds me of Malgudi days.

The book written by the legend is in fact not a totally interesting maths book on numbers but a story of a girl who had fear of maths. Yes, 90% of the book is about the story and 10% on the numbers. The author says that the purpose of narrating this wonderful story is to take away any fear a child may have of numbers. Well...the story is not very fascinating and too lengthy and descriptive. And I doubt how a kid having fear of numbers would benefit from example like 123456789+123456789+987654321+987654321+2= 222222222 ! Or to worst, number 3 says "Every even power of any integer is either a multiple of me or exceeds a multiple of mine by 1" !! I am sure the kid with fear of numbers would develop phobia for maths ...
Such wonder of numbers is summarized would just in 3 pages in a book of 130 pages.
I neither offers good story, nor much practical wonders of numbers.

Interesting book that introduces numbers. Good for children to read in bits and pieces and keep their interest alive in Maths. I like Shakuntala Devi books as they help children explore at their own pace. Good book to have in hard copy to brush up tricks you can do with indivisual digits. Ideal for a 10-12 year old
