Butterfly / Mariposa is a simple picture story of the life cycle of the butterfly. The words are simple and in both English and Spanish to make it appropriate for second language learners at the preschool or early elementary grades. The photos are large and appropriate for preschool age children and this is an excellent book to use on the preschool science center book shelf.
Butterfly, by Susan Canizares, is an amazing book that highlights the life cycle of a butterfly. The real photographs make it so that we can see the process close up. It shows the process all the way from an egg, to caterpillar, to chrysalis, and finally, butterfly. It even goes through the process of the chrysalis, and how that changes over time. The text is extremely simple, with only a few words on each page. I like that this book has only the amount of words necessary to explain the process, it lets the pictures do most of the work! Because of this, we can further engage our kids by supplementing with comments and questions about the pictures. Although this book does not tell a "story" per say, having nonfiction books in our library is super important! This book would be a great beginner reader book, because of its simple and large text. Chrysalis is the only word that will be difficult for children, but with some guidance, they can do it!
This book is filled with beautiful photographs of the life cycle of a butterfly. It has pictures of the egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. The photographs are nice up close photos that are bright and colourful.
The text is kept to a minimum, but what little words are written, is written in a bold large text for children to read along with easily.
The children in my class love the photos and the book always starts conversations around caterpillars and why they have to go to sleep. I love to hear them try to use the word chrysalis in a sentence. :0)
I like that this book is simple enough for a child in Pre-k to be able to pick it up and read it by themselves just by looking at the pictures in order. This book serves it's purpose of explaining the life cycle of a butterfly. The real life pictures show a child what each cycle really looks like.
Content: This is a great book to put in the science center. This book could be used to explain the life cycle of a butterfly.
A simple non-fiction book about the life cycle of a butterfly. The book has lots of detailed photographs. This story is bilingual (spanish and english). A great way to help ESOL students who are starting to learn english.
A definite easy reader for young ones. Only word that would be difficult is chrysalis, but once that is out of the way, they are reading it all on their own.
