I’m the last mermaid.

On the shore of Lake Erie, I spend my final days hunting beach glass, making jewelry, and waiting for my mermaid glamour to leave me. Then it will be over. I resigned myself to the fact that there’s nothing more for me. Until I saw Cooper.

He comes to the beach every day to paint the sunrise and sunset. Nothing in this vast world has sparked my attention as much as him. I have no business falling in love with a human. Not now. And Cooper seems to have secrets of his own. I should leave him alone, but the curious mermaid in me can’t let that shiny bauble go.

More than anything, I want to be part of his world...before it’s too late.

Kate is the last of her kind, a mermaid. She's lived for three hundred years on land since the loss of her entire clan of mermaids to a disease. Moving back near her home she knows that her time is about out and just want to be near her underwater home until then.

Cooper is an artist who has moved back into his childhood home after he finds out that he has cancer and there isn't any hope left for him. He vows to paint each sunset and sunrise during his remaining days overlooking the lake where he spots Kate for the first time collecting sea glass for her shop. Cooper although he knows he shouldn't begin a relationship finds himself drawn to Kate until he finally talks to her.

A well written beautiful love story between Kate and Cooper. Couldn't help but feel for both characters right away. If any complaints about this novella I would have to say I did have a feeling I knew the ending right away but being a romance that wasn't that big of a deal.

Overall, lovely novella length romance. Would definitely recommend.

The surf lapped over my feet, sea foam tickling my toes. It was early summer, but the lake water was still icy. I closed my eyes and felt the cool waves. In the deep of winter, when the lake would freeze, we always sheltered on one of the small islands that dotted Lake Erie. The humans in those days had called us lumpeguin. Sighing deeply, I opened my eyes and looked down at the rocky shoreline. “There you are,” I whispered, bending to pick up a piece of green beach glass. I lifted it and looked at it in the diming sunlight. It was tear-shaped and worn smooth from its time in the water.

A sweet story, with some bittersweet moments and an ending that had me smiling :).

It's easy to fall in love with and root for these people, you want the best for them and to ease whatever sadness and pain they feel.

It's short but the length is perfect for the story told :).

Every summer I spend a week at a cottage on an island on Lake Erie with good friends from work. A couple of them spend hours looking for beach glass, specially first thing in the mornings and evenings then share their finds with the rest of us. Combine this with the fact that while I love fairy tales, the Little Mermaid has always been my favourite. Not however the Disney version, no the real version with it's sad, sad ending is the one I mean.

So, continuing the two streams of thoughts, when I read the outline of this short novella, well, it was a given I'd read it. It was short, very short but their was so much emotion in such a small story.
Kate was a mermaid who has been living as human for hundreds of years, ever since all of her people died of some kind of plague. In her current incarnation; she had to 'disapear' when she lives in an area for a certain length of time since she doesn't age, she collects beach glass to make jewelry. For about a month she has noticed Cooper, a young man painting the sun rises and sunsets the same time she's looking for glass.

They finally strike up a conversation and there is a real connection between them. Cooper has come to this small town right next to Lake Erie to die. Though he hasn't lived there for years, it's where he grew up. There is an inner loneliness about the two of them, the same kind I've always felt about The Little Mermaid.

Since its so short I'm not going to say anything more about this poignant short story except read it. It's free and won't take up much time. But for me it did what it's supposed to, ignite a desire to read more of this authors works.

I give it thumbs up.

Kate is the last mermaid of her kind on Lake Eerie due to a disease that wiped out her kind 100 of years ago. Kate did what she could and burnt her kind and buried them. What happens now when a group of archaeologists finds the burnt remains and the artifacts of her time? Cooper is back in Lake Eerie and living in his house that once belonged to his Grandmother. He only has a few months to live as he is dying as is Kate who knows that the last tear she sheds will be the end of her life as a mermaid. What happens though when sparks fly between Kate and Cooper and neither are interested in a relationship as they both have a short time left on this planet? Of course, Mermaids have healing powers - will Kate use her last tear to heal Cooper or will he want to die if he can't have a life without Kate? The Glass Mermaid was a quick read and a book that ended with an HEA and was a clean romance read. The Glass Mermaid is the perfect read for those who love romance stories, true love and mermaids.

I liked it....

Its sad, and as a personal preference im not the greatest fan of reading about real illnesses i usually avoid those type of books..... Still beautifully written the Author really has a way of capturing scenes, i really felt i could see the scenes described.

A quickie but one i wont forget soon

The Glass Mermaid is a novella about Kate, the last mermaid. She lives on the shore of Lake Eerie collecting pieces of glass washed up by the lake and making them into beautiful jewellery. In the same town lives Cooper, an artist who is dying of cancer and who has come back to the town he grew up in to die.

The Glass Mermaid was a quick read, but the author has managed to create two characters who I ended up really rooting for. It’s told from a dual POV and it was lovely to watch Kate and Cooper fall in love even though neither of them were really looking for a romantic attachment. We got some nice back story about Kate’s mermaid heritage as well and why she is the last mermaid.

Poppy Lawless’s writing style is very good and she can clearly write a romance without descending into flowery, bodice-ripping language, which is great. The novella is really well plotted - she sticks to the point and ties things up nicely at the end. I was really glad Kate and Cooper got a happy ever after!

If I had one thing I would change about this novella, it is that I think it actually had the potential to be a full-length novel. The two MCs are well written, but I would have enjoyed more build-up in their relationship and I would have liked to have seen more of the supporting characters. This isn’t really a criticism as such, because what is in the novella is really good, but yeah, I think it would also have worked as a full length novel.

Nevertheless, I would still definitely recommend this if you’re into mermaids and want a sweet romance to read this summer.

I received a copy of The Glass Mermaid in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to the author, Poppy Lawless.

This was a sweet story. I enjoyed reading both Kate and Coopers POV. I was hoping for lighter story but overall a very good read with lots of interesting back story. I do wish it was longer :)

I read Melanie Karsak’s The Cupcake Witch, the second book in the Chancellor Fairy Tales series and loved it. I had to go back and read the first book, The Glass Mermaid.

While I found The Cupcake Witch to be a sweet, magical romance, I found The Glass Mermaid to be heartbreakingly sad. Kate is the last of her kind and has lived 300 years with the guilt that she wasn’t able to save her family and her merman love. She’s losing her mermaid charm and magic and shedding one single tear could mean the end of her life. Cooper is a 31-year-old who has returned to Chancellor to die on his terms.

While others don’t know they’re dying, they do. In doing so, they choose their own path, showing their strength and courage along the way. Kate and Cooper have waited their entire lives to meet the love of their lives, fall in love, and have a family. Neither expected to meet “the one” just as their lives are about to end, but they do.

Told in first person from dual points of view, you get to see and feel what and how Kate and Cooper are thinking and feeling. As characters, they’re both great. Their backgrounds are sad, each has already been through so much. The beautiful part of this story is the sacrifice one makes for the other, without seeming to truly think about it. That shows true love. The Glass Mermaid and The Cupcake Witch will make you believe in the power of love and the special magic it creates.

The Glass Mermaid is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

This novella is told from multiple perspectives of two lovely characters, neither of which are looking for love. Yet, both of which are desperate for love. Kate is the last mermaid of a Lake Erie sea kingdom. Cooper has moved in to his late grandmother's home to spend his remaining days painting the gorgeous Lake Erie sunrises and sunsets.

I enjoyed learning about the fate of Kate's family and why she is the last mermaid--even if it was tragic and heartbreaking. My favorite part of this book is when the light bulb over my head lit up when I realized that Kate's shop, called The Glass Mermaid because she collects sea glass and crafts jewelry from it could also refer to Kate herself, the last, so very alone and fragile mermaid. Poppy Lawless created a magical and beautiful story.

The Glass Mermaid could easily be read in one sitting as you soak up some sun at the beach, lake, or poolside. It's the perfect summer romance, even if you don't daydream about being a mermaid.

This was a quick novella. The writing was very well done. The images were written beautifully and I loved "seeing" how everything looked in the story. A writer is amazing when they can write their imagery and make you see it how they wanted you to see it. I love when that happens. Kate was amazing.. the last mermaid who makes amazing jewelry and falls in love with a man who is dying. This tale is told from both of their pov's and it is interesting to see what is happening from both characters. I was rooting for them from the start and I am so glad this was a hea. Very good read

Spoilers

I’m a sucker for fantasy and fairytale retellings so I knew would enjoy that aspect of this novella. However, I also really liked how this story had a typical chick lit setting but with a twist because the main character is a mermaid. Chancellor is a cute little town where there’s always a festival, dance, etc. With the addition of a handsome new man next door, all that’s keeping this story from being a rom-com is neither main character has a dog.

Well, lack of a dog and the fact both Kate, the last mermaid, and Cooper have tragic secrets. All the mermaids and everyone Kate loved died around 300 years ago and Cooper is dying from cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer thing is what kept this from being a five star read.

I don’t mind realism in my books, but cancer gives me anxiety and I prefer for it not to be a big part of the media I consume. Cooper’s battle with the disease is a main feature and it’s very depressing. I also started the second novella in this series, The Cupcake Witch, and if I remember correctly, both main character’s mothers died of cancer. That’s just a whole lot of a horrible disease in one series. I did DNF The Cupcake Witch for now.

Back to The Glass Mermaid, this novella does have a happy ending and I loved the way everything was wrapped up. Overall, this was a good read and I look forward to reading more by Melanie Karsak.

Kate is a mermaid and is the last. She buried her (mermaid) family decades ago. She lives as a human, collecting beach glass to sell, and hasn't been in the water for a 100 years. Cooper was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He opted to move back to his childhood home. He notices Kate on the beach.
This was nice, short and sweet. The epilogue was important, otherwise I would have thought this had a completely different ending. A little more explanation would have been nice, but considering the length, didn't happen.

This was a wonderful story filled with magic and a beautiful love story. It's a novella and written by Melanie Karsak under her pen name. It's one of those stories that you won't easily forget because it's so unique. Highly recommended to romance readers. It is also perfectly fine for YA readers probably ages 14+.

A cozy little story that has a Nicholas Sparks air but without his MO of being simultaneously gut wrenching and lame 😂 you know something ominous is looming the whole time, and the character development is shallow. But it’s a sweet, clean romance 💘

This book was short and heartwarming but dealt with illness so it was a little sad as well. The reason this one ended up just being an ok read is because it was too short. The author did great with what we were given but I personally needed more for me to fully be invested.

Content:

Language: Mild. A handful of milder swear words, and one or possibly two blasphemes.

Violence: None.

Sexual: Moderate. There is nudity, innuendos dealing with male anatomy, some sexual daydreaming, and talk about arousal. There are no sex scenes. Naked female body is described though not in an erotica type way.

Trigger Warning: This deals with (mild spoiler) Dying is a big theme in the book, and grief.

I'm miffed. This was categorized as 'cozy'. Maybe I'm misunderstanding that genre, but I didn't peg it as a melancholy walk through two finding love and knowing they can't have it. It's not cozy to read about the grief of and I don't find it cozy to read about innuendo and nudity and arousal.

Cozy is wanting to wrap up in a blanket with fuzzy socks on and a fireplace crackling in the background sipping your favorite tea or hot cocoa. This book made me feel like I needed to be staring out a window on a rainy day watching the rain run in rivulets down the glass pane in broody silence.

I'm not happy Bob. NOT. Happy.

Taking the misnomer of calling this a cozy read aside, the story was good. It was heartfelt. Well written for such a short story. I might've felt differently if there wasn't so much lust in there to make me internally wail in "I should not be privy to this inner thought, dude!" I like seeing the inner workings of character's minds, but I don't include sexual fantasies or arousal in there. Makes me feel like a creeper. SO. UNCOMFORTABLE.

So, I will give this over to the peoples who don't mind that sort of content and run back to my squeaky clean romance fantasy adventures.

The Glass Mermaid by Poppy Lawless is the best short story I've ever read or listened to. Even though the audiobook clocked in just shy of two hours, I'm still thinking about this complete story a few days after finishing it. The epilogue is simply amazing!

The story centers around Kate who is a 400 year old mermaid living on the shores of Lake Erie. Kate has lived most of her life alone after all of her family and entire mermaid village succumbed to some sort of plague brought to this country when the Europeans "settled" the area. The title of the book gets its name from Kate's shop, The Glass Mermaid, where she sells jewelry made out of sea glass that she collected along the shores of Lake Erie.

Kate has never been attracted to any human - even though she's lived among them for nearly 400 years - until she met Cooper. Similarly Cooper hasn't been attracted to any woman until he moved into his grandmother's house and observed Kate walking on the beach collecting sea glass. Cooper suffers from cancer and all he intended to do while waiting to die was paint Lake Erie's sunrises and sunsets everyday - until he met Kate.

I listened to the Audible version of this book narrated by Hollie Jackson, who did a great job. She clearly differentiated between male and female voices and changed the tempo in the performance when warranted. Simply put, I highly recommend this audiobook! I received a copy of this audio in exchange for an unbiased review.

I'm a mermaid at heart, so this mermaid romance short got my attention. This is a cute romance, a short and sweet novella, even if it is predictable. Without reading the blurb, which is spoilery already, you know quickly what is going to happen. As soon as Kate describes Cooper as having short hair, and he talks about his nausea, you know it is a Big C book. And the way Kate mentions many times how mermaid tears are a life force, well, we can figure out what she is going to do to help Cooper. And being a formulaic romance, you know they are going to tell themselves they don't deserve love, then something tragic or scary is going to happen to bring their secrets out to each other, and they will come together despite themselves to have a happy ending.

So putting that aside, the book is lovely as the sea. I loved the descriptions of the beaches and the sunset paintings done by Cooper. He paints one every day and numbers them by the day. I enjoyed the way Kate describes the sea and the gifts of glass that she creates into lovely jewelry and sells in her shop. I liked how good both of these characters are, despite the fact they are both dealing with tragedy and expecting not to live much longer. This is definitely a nice novella that is light despite the heavy subject matter and is a fun quick read.

Poppy Lawless may be a new name in Indie publishing, but her writing style feels so warm and comfortable, like she's been at it for years! In the span of a short story, she managed to tell such a full story, a perfectly sweet romance. <3

The chapters switch back and forth between the two main characters, Kate and Cooper. In fact, there aren't many secondary characters at all, but you hardly notice their absence. We're told right away that they're both running short on time; Cooper is dying of cancer, and Kate is the last mermaid, running out of magic. Immediately, my heart ached for them. You can feel an instant connection between them, and I was reluctant to get to what I was sure would be a tragic end.

Now, I'm not about to tell you how it ended, but what I will say it that I was devastated when it was over. I wished so hard that the story had gone on longer, into a full scale novel. I fell in love with this story and the characters, and I wanted more! I'm so excited to see more from this author. I'm expecting great things!

STORY REVIEW......

This was an amazingly sweet beautiful story. I was really happy with how the story ended. If I was to complain about it in anyway it would be that I wished it was longer. It would have been nice to learn more about her people.

AUDIO REVIEW......

I found the narrator to be very good at reading the book as well as giving the characters life and voice.

When I first started this I was worried about where it was going. Thankfully it was a happy ending. Yes, this was a short book but it was very enjoyable. I did feel bad for both Kate & Cooper. They were the only ones left in their families. So, it was nice that they found each other.
