Every five years, a tournament is held, the top two hundred spirit callers across the kingdoms invited to compete for the top prizes, daring to dream of the glory and riches awaiting the winner. Scott Taylor is one such dreamer, granted a wild card entry into a tournament beyond his imagination, the chance to compete against his peers for the ultimate prize. On the battlefield, there will be winners and losers and only the strong will survive.
Yet all is not well within the kingdoms. Malice looms over the tournament, it wears many faces and all who enter will be pawns in its great game. Good men and bad, liars and honest men, spies, outlaws and competitors, all will play to win…

This is a very enjoyable sci-fi / fantasy story, the first in a long series. It has intrigued me enough to keep on reading through the 2nd book and beyond. There are a lot of characters to introduce, and this takes a while, but the story is kept interesting during this process. Once the action truly kicks in, it is exciting and promises to take the reader down unexpected routes. I highly recommend this series and this author!
