Hunter Holt might be the most stubborn ex-soldier ever born, but when he’s called on to help find a lost foster kid, he jumps into action. Even if it means working with the woman who broke his heart five years ago—the woman who still haunts his dreams . . .
Faye Smith has spent five long years trying to get her life back on track. She knows she should’ve turned toward Hunter and not away from him. But they both had too many demons to destroy. Maybe now they’ll get another chance—and save someone else’s life too . . .
But first they’ll have to stop arguing long enough to trust the Deep Ops team. Hunter was a lost boy himself once. In fact, he ran away from the exact same man, their monster of a father. Now he and Faye will have to unite to find the brother he never knew—and maybe each other . . .
New York Times, USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti has published more than seventy novels and novellas, which have been translated into several languages, with millions of copies sold world-wide. Her books have received Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus starred reviews, favorable Washington Post and New York Times Book Reviews, and been included in Amazon best books of the year.
Rebecca has ridden in a locked Chevy trunk, has asked the unfortunate delivery guy to release her from a set of handcuffs, and has discovered the best silver mine shafts in which to bury a body…all in the name of research. Honest.
Another recommendation from my friend, Rebecca Zanetti is a new author to me. And this is my second book with her, And loving every minute of it
okay where to start on this one, taken is 1.5 Installment and can be read as a stand alone
This is a romantic suspense novel that is part of the Deep Ops series. Hunter and Faye meet again and try to rekindle their romance. While they try to help stop a bunch of Senseless murders and try to get Hunter’s stepbrother back home safely Mark, Hunter, Faye, and Raider became a family after growing up in foster care, living with their foster mother
Hunter and Faye Had even dated for a period of time growing up…. but Five years ago, they went their separate ways…
Hunter Holt Is ex-military, and suffers from some serious PTDS
Faye Smith is former psychologist, with some of her own dark past to deal with
Raider is now on the Deep ops Team
Hunter, and Raider might be one of the deadliest on the planet, and the crankiest, but when Miss Angelina called, you went, no matter who you were, or who you’d become.
Taken was an awesome second chance romance. Hunter Holt and Faye Smith had a powerful connection. I was totally rooting for them from the start. Their love story was very sweet and felt real. This read was a novella, but it didn't feel rushed or thin. The action was spot on, the romance well developed, and the plot was intriguing. I loved every minute of this book. Faye and Hunter made a cute couple. Jackson stole my heart. Raider has me waiting impatiently for his story which is coming in September. Can't wait for Fallen! I loved getting more of Wolfe again. He was my favorite from book 1 and I can't wait for him to get his own love story. I also have to say there was a Dark Protector cameo that had me losing my fangirl mind. Overall a great read and I'm really enjoying this series!
Deep Ops series book 1.5. Novella length but don’t discount it. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a standalone. Easter eggs for fans of Zanetti.
A second chance romance. They walked away from each other in the past. They want to try again but there is past pain that has to be dealt with. The hero is a protector. He would never lay a hand on a woman. I didn’t like that she felt it was ok to kick him. It turned it into a sexy scene in bed but she should have found a better way to get his attention.
Love the dog! And the kitten too. The dog shows up only briefly in this story but he leaps off the page. Read the first book and you’ll understand my uncontrollable laughter at his antics. Humor and suspense and romance. A great combination.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share,
Five years ago, trauma and loss severed the tie between Faye and Hunter. Unable to cope, Faye walked away from the love of her life. Now she needs his help to find a lost boy... the half-brother Hunter never knew he had. Thinking himself in love with his teacher, Jackson has left his foster home and has hit the road with her. But their happy little run is full of danger and death. Can Hunter help his little bro before it's too late?
I wish I could have seen the love that Faye and Hunter shared more clearly. While this was a second chance romance, it came off a bit forced. I wanted to believe in their love and find comfort in them finding their way back to each other. But this was a novella, and there didn't seem to be enough time for that. I'm hoping to see them and little Jackson in future books, to get another glimpse of their happy new beginning. I loved getting to see the Deep Ops crew again. Well, at least some of them. I'm still dying for Angus's book, but it seems I'll have to wait for a bit. Raider's story is next and I can't wait to see what makes this man tick!
Taken by Rebecca Zanetti is a companion novella in the romantic suspense Deep Ops series. This novella takes place between the first and second full length books of the series. The main characters do change in this novella so it could also be read as a standalone if choosing to do so.
Hunter Holt and Faye Smith do share a past together but it’s been five long years with no contact between the two of them. However, when word comes in about a missing teen Hunter and Faye find themselves forced together by the circumstances. Hunter also learns that the boy may also be a brother to him that he didn’t know he had.
Taken really has all the components of a great fast paced Rebecca Zanetti romantic suspense read with likable characters, an action packed plot and good, solid writing. I did however wish it had been longer so I would be able to get to know the characters better and get more intensity out of the action but as with most novellas I couldn’t help but want more, still good for a quick read though.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
There were so many good things in this little novella. I get such a kick out of the alcoholic/cross-dressing dog, the big, scary dude named Wolfe who carries a kitten in his pocket, and we even get an appearance from Dage and Talen from the Dark Protector series.
The main characters are not anyone we met in book 1. Our couple, Hunter and Faye are foster siblings to Raider. Raider is who met in book 1. He comes to help Hunter and Faye chase down Hunter's half brother who he just learned about, and we get the rekindled relation of Hunter and Faye.
I'm not sure if Hunter and Faye will make any more appearances in the Deep Ops books but it was fun getting to know them and learning a little bit more of Raider's background. Wolfe is such a quirky character and I love seeing him in every book but I really can't wait until he's the main character.
This had a great mix of fun and seriousness to it. I can't wait for the next book!
Another winner by bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti. It exploded from page 1 and continued the pacing until the very end of the short book. I really love this book
This series absolutely stinks. And it stinks sooooooo gooooood! Potential oozes from every page, character and trope being used. I was pretty enamoured with Angus Force and his crew of misfits when we were introduced to them in the first book of the Deep Ops series; Hidden and things just stepped up another level with this perfectly formed novella.
"I’m the type of guy who only loves once… and you walked away."
Taken is Hunter and Faye’s story. A side-step from the main crew in that they are Raider Tanaka’s non-biological brother and sister. They are also deeply in love, but have been apart for the past five years due to their own demons, grief and general stubbornness getting in the way.
He wasn’t the only one who’d given his heart away and never got it back…
Bought back together by their foster mother, to try and locate one of the children in her care who has gone on the run with his teacher, this is a book of two halves with the rebuilding of Hunter and Fayes’ relationship taking place around the man-hunt for the fugitives across several state lines.
"You’ll always be mine…"
Tanaka, Wolfe, Angus Force as well as Roscoe the alcoholic dog (adore him) all make appearances in this one, but it was the surprise inclusion of two of my all-time favourite Zanetti characters that took this novella from stellar to outstanding. I laughed, had a bit of a lip wobble, and was thoroughly entertained through its whole reading, and it just left me desperate for more from this series. Fallen is not due to release until September, but if its predecessors are anything to go on, it will be well worth the wait.
"I’m not afraid of you… Never have been and never will be. so you just go right ahead and show me what you’ve got, tough guy…"

Hunter Holt, Faye Smith, and Raider Tanaka became a family after growing up in foster care, living with their foster mother Miss Angelina. Hunter and Faye even dated for a while before calling it quits. Now Miss Angelina is asking Faye, Hunter, and Raider to help find runaway foster child, Jackson Holt, who happens to be Hunter's sixteen-year-old half-brother he never knew existed. Authorities believe that Jackson left with a teach who was having an affair with her student. The two are making their way across the country leaving a trail of dead bodies during convenience store robberies. Hunter, Faith, and Raider do not believe Jackson knows about the murders. They want to get to him before it's too late.
This romantic suspense novella is part of the Deep Ops series. Hunter and Faye meet again and rekindle their romance. I thought the romance portion of the story was just OK. The suspense of tracking down the fugitives with the help of Raider Tanaka's Deep Ops team was very entertaining. My rating: 4 Stars.

I love this new series by Rebecca Zanetti. Romantic-Suspense and not paranormal. The whole misfit outfit are just wonderful. This novella is not about a primary team member, but is the story of the foster siblings of Deep Ops Agent, Raider Tanaka, Faye and Hunter. The second chance romance is really sweet and the suspense is great too.
Hunter Holt might be the most stubborn ex-soldier ever born, but when he’s called on to help find a lost foster kid, he jumps into action. Even if it means working with the woman who broke his heart five years ago—the woman who still haunts his dreams . . .
Faye Smith has had a hard childhood with an abusive father. She ended up in foster care with Miss Angelina and foster brothers, Raider, Hunter and Mark. She and Hunter became more than foster siblings, but their relationship ended badly five years ago. Each of them has done a lot of growing and healing in that time.
Five years ago Hunter Holt knew that he didn't want to let Faye go, but he had issues he needed to deal with on his own. Now he needs her help to track down a half-sibling he never knew he had. The kid is in real trouble and Hunter is determined to rescue him and he needs to make things right with the only woman he will ever love.
This is a well-written, entertaining, fast paced, steamy, second chance, romantic suspense novella. It has likable, engaging characters, a heart warming romance, and a happily ever after ending. It is an excellent addition to Ms. Zanetti's outstanding Deep Ops series, and can be enjoyed when read as a stand alone. I am looking forward to reading the other novels in this series with great anticipation.
Faye and Hunter met in their youth at Miss Angelina's foster home. They fell in love in their late teens and split up in their twenties when Hunter joined the Marines and tragedy tore them apart. Taken follows their journey back to each other.
Faye’s backbone and sheer determination makes her interaction with Hunter both poignant and fun at times, they’re still in love and just need to find their way back....and Faye is determined. Hunter calls upon his foster brother Raider (along with Wolf) from the Deep Op’s unit (gotta say, I love Wolf and can’t wait for his book!!). The Unit definitely has some quirky characters including a German Shepherd who’s a slush LOL.
This is a novella only 100 pages or so so I can’t say too much but Hunter learns he has a brother who’s in his late teens and he’s in trouble. It’s up to Hunter with help from Faye, Raider, and Wolf to find him before law enforcement catches up to him and his companion...if not, things will go from bad to worse for Jackson. The epilogue was small but perfect!!
Zanetti introduces us to Raider’s foster siblings and has us hunting down a kidnapping serial killer.
I was lost for a moment when I met Hunter Holt and Fays Smith, but as soon as Raider and their foster mother became involved I got the connection. Holt, Faye and Raider all spent time in the same Foster home and their momma needs their help. Apparently Holt has a half-brother who is in a heap of trouble.
Raider brings Wolfe with him and gads the man just makes me laugh. I fell in love with Angus Force and his crew of misfits so any page time with them was welcome.
While this is a novella, Zanetti gave us a full story from a second chance romance between Faye and Holt, to a kidnapping serial killer who crossed state lines. We even got to spend time with our high-heel wearing, beer loving pooch!
The romance was sweet, and low on drama. The two have grown and clearly there were reasons it didn’t work the first time. We see closure on the case, and get our HEA.
I enjoyed Taken, but I cannot wait for more of the Deep Ops unit. The next book, Fallen will be a full-length featuring Brigid and Raider. If you haven’t started the series it’s the perfect series to back in your beach tote!
Zanetti continues her irresistible Deep Ops series with Taken.
Five years ago Faye Smith needed to get her life in order and walked away from the love of her life. But needing Hunter Holt’s help to find a runaway foster teen has given her a second chance with the man who holds her heart.
Having run away from the same abusive man, Hunter doesn’t hesitate to help find the half-brother he didn’t know existed, even when it means teaming up with the beautiful psychologist who broke his heart. But the collaboration not only means they get a second chance, it also means working with his friend Raider and the Deep Ops group. Can they all work together to reunite the brothers?
In this novella, Zanetti shows that you don’t need a full length novel to get an engaging, action packed and sizzling romance. Faye and Hunter’s undeniable attraction and deep connection, fueled by their history, feels utterly sincere despite the story’s length. Zanetti also incorporates in characters from the Deep Ops group including the hilarious Wolfe with his loveable kitten aptly named Kat and the alcohol loving and stiletto stealing dog Roscoe.
And get this all you Dark Protectors fans, I’m sorry if this is a tad spoilery but it must be said, Rebecca seamlessly weaves in TWO characters from that series! Oh yes she did! I totally flipped and re-read that scene a bunch of times.
Zanetti does a wonderful job of crafting an fascinating romance in a scant number of pages. Taken is novella #1.5 of the Deep Ops series by Rebecca Zanetti. It is a standalone contemporary romantic suspense, told from several points of view.

Faye, Hunter and Raider were all in Miss A's (Miss Angelina's) foster home as kids. They became friends and are still friends now years later. Hunter and Faye were an item for a while but broke up years ago. But when Miss A sends Faye to tell Hunter that one of her newest foster kids has gone missing and is probably his half brother, Hunter has no choice but to help Faye find the kid. And we see right away that Faye and Hunter still have feelings for each other. When Hunter calls Raider and asks for his help, he's all in as well. Raider is working for a secretive Deep Ops team though and neither Hunter not Faye know anything about what he does. Raider shows up with a colleague named Wolfe from the Deep Ops team they both work for.
Jackson, the foster kid who ran away with a crazy woman, Louise is in big trouble and danger since the crazy woman he's running with has killed people as she's robbing convenience store and now they're both on the run. The danger really kicks it up a notch when police and bounty hunters join in the hunt for Jackson and the Louise. The Deep Ops team dog, Roscoe is so strange and has a penchant for alcohol. He was funny though, I would love to see more of the dog.
Hunter and Jackson's father really sounds like a piece of work and should have been given a little payback for the way he treated his kids. Poor Jackson is all messed up because of his father. Jackson didn't realize exactly what Louise was doing and Hunter calls his a couple of times to talk to him but Jackson doesn't trust Hunter because they didn't know the other even existed until now. But Hunter is trying to help Jackson if only he'll let him.
I've only read a couple of the books in this series and am totally reading them out of order but they are standalone books so I've been able to do that no problem. I really enjoyed this book and recommend the series.
A novella to fill the gap whilst fans wait for the next full length book. Actually thinking about it if it was Raider you had hoped for then this story does help fill in some gaps about his background and upbringing. Somehow Hunter and Faye drifted apart emotionally and Faye made the heart breaking decision to walk away. Now five years later Faye needs to contact Hunter because someone very important needs his help. Is it possible that Hunters life is about to get more complicated ? I quite enjoyed this story as it had an unusual almost Bonnie and Clyde feel to it. The couple clearly never stopped loving each other so their romance was possibly a slam dunk but for this reader it was all the insights about the Deep Ops team that I really enjoyed. Oh and as I'm a huge fan of the Dark Protectors there's a scene here that had me squealing with joy but clearly my lips are sealed. Unfortunately I did feel the big take down at the end seemed too quick but the epilogue and sneak peak of the next book certainly helped offset that. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair.
While I was disappointed to not get Fallen right away, I surprisingly enjoyed Taken. I’m not a fan of novellas as I don’t feel that we get to know the characters and what makes them who they are. That isn’t the case for this one.
Hunter and Faye have had rough childhoods and a lot of baggage that they brought into their relationship. 5 years later, they’re working together again to find Hunter’s half-brother. Emotions are at the surface as they race to find him.
We also got more of Raider and Wolfe (can’t wait for his crazy story) and had a surprise cameo from some familiar friends!
UPDATE: this is actually book 1.5. Book 2, Fallen releases Sept. 23rd!!
Hmmm....a little disappointed as this is not at all the book I thought we were getting next based on the preview we got in Hidden. Was totally expecting to read Fallen with Brigid and Raider.
Review copy was received from Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Taken is a novella between books 1 and 2 in the Deep Ops series. We don't see the main couple from Hidden, but this is a background setup for Raider who is the hero of book 2, Fallen. It's a bit disconcerting because for the beginning as there is little connection to the world we know.
Things move quickly, as it is a novella, in Henry and Faye's story. They are childhood friends with Raider and he steps in, bringing his team, to help with their problem. Henry's unknown, young half-brother is in a world of trouble. So we do see Angus and Roscoe, Wolfe and K.A.T. for brief comic relief and connecting up the series.
Action-packed and sexy, I like seeing smart planning and execution on an op. I don't know how much we will see of Henry and Faye in the future, since they are in Kentucky or Tennessee, and not on the team. I'm enjoying the series and look forward to more with Raider in September.
Taken is a novella in the Deep Ops series and while Faye and Hunter aren't on the team they are childhood friends of Raider. Faye and Hunter were kids together and then they were so much more. Since I'm a sucker for second chance romances this was perfect for me. I loved that neither one had stopped loving the other and how although they both tried moving on during their 5 year separation they never could. I loved seeing the men from the team, Wolfe was great and Roscoe had me laughing. While I loved the cameo of two of my favorite characters I felt it was odd and honestly out of place. With that said it was a really enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to Raider's book.
I have always been an absolute fan of Rebecca Zanetti. Her 'Dark Protectors' series is one of my all time favorites. This book was different genre than what I am use to her writing. I did enjoy this story, I like that her main female character is strong and can stand up to her male counterpart. These characters have a past and yet they need to combine forces with others to find the younger brother of out main character Hunter. I also liked that they supporting characters are as strong and funny as they are. 3.5 stars for this one. Speaking of Dark Protectors, some of my favorite character make a cameo in this one!
Hunter and Faye had a relationship in the past and they both walked away from it. Now five years later they have to work together to find a missing boy. There's not a whole lot said about the past, and I didn't really like that. Then they got back together with out much said. I did love seeing Raider, Wolffe, Kat, Roscoe and Angus. Roscoe and Kat are still my favorites. Looking forward to Raider and Brigid's book.
Taken was another strong story in Zanetti's Deep Ops series, and I was delighted reading it. There's a little nod to another of her series, which made me smile so hard! Faye and Hunter were both strong characters, and they fit in with the other characters from the first story very well. The suspense was intense, and I was at the edge of my seat for most of Taken.
COYER treasure hunt Read a book with One Word Title 2 POINTS.
As a side-story of Rebecca Zanetti’s Deep Ops series, ‘Taken’ is pretty much a compact standalone as Raider Tanaka’s old friends take the stage in a short, second-chance romance.
In this case however, the brevity of the story probably made me less engaged than I could have been, since this felt as though it could have been a full-length book and had lost so much because it wasn’t. All we know is that Hunter Holt and Faye Smith had once been together; she’d split five years ago and is now back to get him to search for his teenage half-brother he’d never known existed. In fact, I felt as though I’d been missing a big chunk of their backstory—the breakup, the —even though it was sort of told in a few lines what had happened to Faye and Hunter.
Coming back together in the midst of the search, then pledging themselves to each other again after scorching sexy times or talking things through to re-cement their broken bond just seemed too easy, too soon…too coincidental. Would Faye really have searched Hunter back out had it not been for this incident when she’d done nothing for five years? As a result, Faye/Hunter were a pairing that seemed to happen only again because unexpected circumstances forced them back again, rather than a pairing that actively wanted to solve the problems that had first rent them apart while finding their way back to each other again—a rather common occurrence in the second-chance romance trope that typically leaves me feeling scratchy on the inside.
There’s no denying that Zanetti writes pretty well though, but what constantly threw me off were the strange and awkward inserts of humour that broke the intensity of what would have been otherwise an enthralling narrative. In here, it come in the form of out-of-the-blue humour, even odder animal behaviour and weird pick-up lines that bad-ass characters spout, incongruous to what you think they might behave.
In short, ‘Taken’ was pretty much what I thought it would be—no big surprises and not entirely a let-down either but not something I could really get excited about…at least not while Raider’s story is in the making.
I’m already in love with all the members of the Deep Op team, including Roscoe, but this novella introduces us to a few characters in Raider’s life that also shines a light on his past. And I loved them just as much as the rest of the team.
It’s been five years since Faye has seen Hunter. She’s been sent to find him and inform him of some surprising news as well as a serious development that requires their attention. Their attraction is immediately resurrected, although it never died in the first place.
I loved that this couple had a past so a connection was already established. While they weren’t eager to open up about what the cause of their separation was, they also didn’t completely shy away from it. I totally understood the reasoning behind it and the deep emotional pain that led them to it.
”He’d never been given real trust. Neither of them had. Unconditional trust and love. Everyone wanted love. It was the trust they’d never been able to even ask for – from anybody.”
This has everything you could want in a full length book, great characters, humor, passion, danger and excitement. And along the way were a couple of surprises that delighted me. The chemistry is amazing, and their decision to heal the break between them was totally satisfying. Add in an excellent epilogue that had me choking up a bit and I’m one happy reader.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided by NetGalley and Kensington Books. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
