I was hired to apprehend a monster - a Dom who'd been sentenced to life for killing his submissive. I've seen what he's capable of, and the images will haunt me forever. I swore I'd stop at nothing to put him behind bars.
But then our plane back to the States crashes.
We are the only two survivors.
And the monster will make me wish I'd died along with the rest of them...
Please note: This is a dark romance which includes kinky, sexual content and dubious consent.
Fueled by dark chocolate and even darker coffee, USA Today bestselling author Jane Henry writes what she loves to read – character-driven, unputdownable romance featuring dominant alpha males and the powerful heroines who bring them to their knees. She’s believed in the power of love and romance since Belle won over the beast, and finally decided to write love stories of her own.
I devoured "Island Captive" in like one sitting it was that good.
And no this was not no insipid flowery fairy-tale but it was definitely my kind of bed-time story one where my evening is most certainly going to feature sweet dreams of the more carnal variety; if I'm very lucky that is.
The premise behind this storyline is simple Nadine works for a government agency that apprehends hardened criminals that have gone AWOL. Along with her partner, she is hot on the trail of convicted killer Adrian who has been convicted of brutally murdering his submissive. Nadine feels this one personally; despite her trying to stay detached and manages while recapturing Adrian to earn his own brand of personal hatred. When their charter plane encounters difficulties mid-flight and crashes Adrian and Nadine are the sole survivors. The roles these two started out with are dramatically reversed; Jailor becomes prisoner and the prisoner holds all the cards and is damn sure ready to use them all to his advantage. I think someones definitely got a case of bruised feelings here.
So this is where our story really takes off and it's fabulous. Adrian in control making Nadine pay for every little slight while he in a way punishes here for her past treatment of him. I have to be honest here I was struggling initially with whether I could grow to like Adrian as he just seemed so cold and single-minded in his interactions and overall mindset.
no matter as the story unfolded, I began to warm to him as he gradually started to redeem himself. The slow gradual burn between Nadine and Adrian really appealed to me. I would have liked him maybe to show a bit more in terms of feelings as the book progressed. But that was just more of a personal preference; I do like my dramatic declarations of loves and devotion and sadly that for me was missing here. We do get the eventual HEA here, but it was just a little anti-climatic for my liking. This had plenty of action and was super enjoyable, do be aware it is slightly dub-con in nature but that was half the draw here for me. The eventual connection between Adrian and Nadine here was completely consensual just initially this does skate the boundaries please avoid if that is at all an issue for you. So yeh my removing half a star was mainly due to the lack of emotional declarations something about seeing a tough grown man brought to his knees by the fairer sex just gets me all a quiver. despite my above gripe, this was still a fantastic read that I really did enjoy. So Imagine a naughtier version of the Blue Lagoon (Love that film) one with lots of spankings and you're halfway there with picturing this. This may be my first Jane Henry book but It definitely is not going to be my last. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of "Island Captive" of which I have reviewed voluntary. All opinions are entirely my own.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💙💚💜🖤 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔 World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎 Character development: 😠🙃😍😘🥰
The heroine:Nadine - she works for the government, as a US Marshall tracking down and capturing escaped convicts. She is after a bad one, he worked as a dominant in a BDSM club and he whipped, beat and strangled a girl that was his submissive. Nadine has a big hate on for this guy since he did such terrible things to a girl that was under his control and whom he was supposed to protect.
The Hero:Adrien - he is a dominant and a sadist. He was in jail for ten years for murdering his submissive, Lori. Though he did whip her and bruise her, he didn’t kill her. She was a masochist and wanted him to go further, though he wouldn’t draw blood like she wanted. He was going to propose to her when he was framed for her murder. So he escaped from jail and fled to the tropics.
The Story: Nadine and her partner get their guy and are flying him back to the states when there is a problem with the plane. The pilots have to make an emergency landing and the plane crashes near an uninhabited island. They tried to communicate that they were going down but don’t know if air traffic control got the message. Nadine and Adrien are the only survivors.
Adrien wants to punish Nadine for how she caught him and treated him, and he has the upper hand since he outweighs her by about a hundred pounds and is far taller than she. He is determined to exert his control over her and train her to obey him. Though I hate it when the heroine is forced to obey the Hero or get punished, this is quite an interesting story. It is also super steamy. He never rapes her though he does touch her against her will in the beginning and he punishes her severely (he fully admits he is a sadist, and it turns him on).
Of course, the story is interesting because they are trying to make a life on this deserted island, which was once home to a geological research team or person. So, the island is uninhabited, but there is a small building and some rough supplies that were left behind. Though there are also dangers and Nadine is missing many of her conveniences from home. I liked the story and I enjoy the tropical island getaway feel after reading so many books that take place in the city.
This could have been such a great story about a federal marshal and a tough criminal that is captured by her, but their plane crashes on an isolated island and they are the only two survivors. Then, the jailor will become the captive. I said it would have been a great story, but unfortunately it wasn't as dark as I expected. The criminal who is also a Dom is presumed that he has murdered his sub cold-bloodily and this is the darkest part of the book. But in the end what happens really in the story is that the guy just tries to make the pretty marshal submit and in the end they fall in love in a very predictable way. The girl is not as tough as she appears in the beginning and the guy is a deep down a big misunderstood softy. Thus, the story was not bad. I just had higher expectations.
I’m not into the DOM/SUB trope AT ALL, but I still enjoyed this read. I loved that the heroine wasn’t just simply submissive, and I loved that even though the hero is meant to be bad... he softens and is reluctantly soft from the start. I mean he’s not a saint or a good guy by any means at the start, but still... it’s there. I also love stranded/survival romances. I don’t know why but I love when people fall in love during an unusual struggle.
Genre: Dark Romance Type: Standalone POV: First Person - Dual Rating: 3.75 Stars
Nadine Fontaine found satisfaction every time she put a criminal behind bars. Her latest assignment with an escaped convict Adrian Barone was no different until they found themselves to be the only plane crash survivors on a deserted island.
I liked both of the characters, and they had good chemistry. However, the book was a lot lighter than I thought it would be in both darkness and kink levels. There was barely any dubcon, and the kink was merely light spanking. I also felt the ending was too easy. Regardless, I did enjoy the location and the overall story of how they coped with the situations.
On the island I found freedom.
Island Captive is a story of endurance and breaking free. It would appeal to readers who enjoy survival romance.

First off, I strongly dislike the cover. Who wears their shirt like that? It looks uncomfortable and awkward, like it's digging into his armpits.
Ok, so the author gives this hero a tribal tattoo. Modern tribal tattoos (the kind Americans get who have never belonged to a tribe) are the lamest tattoos in existence. Categorically one the worst tattoos someone could get. Unimaginative and boring. I think the author was trying to give the character a badass tattoo. A more impressive tattoo would be something like a Sak Yant tattoo from Thailand, or you know, maybe a tattoo with personal meaning behind it. Anything other than a tribal tattoo, which just made me think the hero was either an idiotic frat boy in the late 80s or simply had bad judgement.
Tattoo and cover rant aside, this book contained decent smut. It was relatively dark up until about the 60% mark, when it turned into a sappy love story. 3.5 stars for a good first half. It wasn't bad for a freebie.
Favorite excerpt:
"Is that scrambled eggs?" I ask him.
"Yup," he says, "I found a nest nearby."
"That's a little sad," I say.
Lol. Idk know why this cracked me up so much, but it did. It was just so random, and also this weird juxtaposition of a realistic sentiment but unrealistic situation. Who makes scrambled eggs when on a deserted island?? Despite the lack of realism I liked the book (the first half at least). It's an enjoyable read if you don't take it too seriously.
I got this free on Amazon awhile ago and finally thought ill read it lol
The book was a decent pace i did maybe towards the middle skimm few pages.. beside that it was a gritty darkish book.. like always if this isn't your cup no need to read.
I thought this was going to be more darker.. but it was medium darkish..when a plane crash brings two ppls together even when they despise eachother was wow.. i enjoyed Adrian he was dark he was misunderstood and was set up and well truly alpha male and Nadine was a bad ass she took no shit from Adrian she stood up for herself and yes she acted out who wouldn't when your taken captive but she tried.. her emotions were mixed when she stayed with Adrian longer the hate turned into love... and at first their relationship wasn't good.. it grew into something..but we still got some dark stuff like dub-con punishments and some cold vibes from both before things got hot and heavy.
Agnst, no ow/om, drama, no cheating, drama, steamy sex, virgin gal and not a manwhore.
Recommend- maybe (if your okay with dark romance) Cover-⭐⭐⭐

"tears are a response to emotion, not pain" ~Adrian
U.S. Marshal, Nadine, tasked to find and capture Adrian, an escaped prisoner convicted of murder (huge alpha male btw!) both of whom get stuck on a island with no hope of rescue. . .enter dom / sub storyline.
A light captor / captive read with only 2 characters, can't get more simple than that!
PROS:
🔥 - the novel is an easy, dip-your-toes into the captive / captor genre, without crossing too many lines. Many readers within the captor / captive genre have a difficult time with the issue of rape which usually goes hand in hand within the genre, this is avoided as much as possible which makes it more easily digestible for many.
🔥 - Stand-alone, HEA with an overall simple storyline. The novel doesn't get complicated or burdened with tons of characters or intricate subplots.
CONS:
☠️ - Needs more character development, without it the novel was just short of being a 5-star read.
☠️ - The ending is WAAYYYYY unrealistic! It's fiction and the storyline in general in unrealistic, yea I get it, but without giving away any spoilers the end just goes way over the top and makes unable to identify with the fantasy.
☠️ - Quite a few grammatical and spelling errors found, ugh! There is also a bondage part that is physically impossible which a reader that is more savvy on the subject would definitely pick up.
BOTTOM LINE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Simple, summer read for erotic lovers or beginners into the captive / captor novels who want a light but dark read but isn't too dark. (It is a great break from the heavy shit!) Take a whirl and see what you think!
This is a short dark romance that could have been a five star read, but I didn’t particularly like the heroine. She’s very tough and clever in the beginning – as she’s hired to travel internationally to capture a convict, and she’s intelligent enough to out-smart him. But then when they’re on the island, all that intelligence and street-smarts crashes and burns along with their plane. She’s also starving nearly to death and whining about not liking coconut. I mean, I hate coconut, too, but I would eat it when it was the only dessert in the cafeteria when I lived in residence at university, and that was hardly a “starving to death” type of situation. I also didn’t really understand why the hero of the story hated the heroine so much. I mean, he understands that it was her job to apprehend him. He’s also later revealed to not be a truly terrible person. I just didn’t understand why he was the way that he was. All in all, if you can get past the inconsistencies in the two protagonists, this is an otherwise entertaining read.
Blurb: `I was hired to apprehend a monster - a Dom who'd been sentenced to life for killing his submissive. I've seen what he's capable of, and the images will haunt me forever. I swore I'd stop at nothing to put him behind bars.
But then our plane back to the States crashes.
We are the only two survivors.
And the monster will make me wish I'd died along with the rest of them...
I don't know much about BDSM but I know that consent is KEY. The H in this story is abusing the h without her permission and thinks it is sexy. Terrorizes and assaulting someone for your pleasure makes you a monster, NOT a hero.
Once again I'm lured in by false summaries. This isn't a dark romance and, as usual, I'm going to spoil this entire book so you have been warned.
The author wants you to believe the guy is a monster and the girl is a strong heroine because apparently, according to the author's bio, she likes to write about strong heroines. Well, little does she know she just wrote the same kind of chick I have read a thousand times in these kinds of books.
Basically the book is about a "strong" female cop who takes down a supposed dangerous killer, but the plane crashes on the way back and of course, they are the only two people who survived. And supposedly the guy is going to make the chick wish she had died with the rest.
Yeah, no. He needs or wants her alive because he doesn't want to be alone. She needs him alive because despite being a strong chick, she has no survival skills.
From the chapter they crashed to chapter seventeen, it's all just the same. He starts trying to train her to be a sub and it mostly just ends up being spankings of the sexual nature and she starts to respond to him to the point all he has to do is look at her naked body and she squirms and gets all hot and bothered. And when that isn't going on, when the chick is behaving, they go around looking for food sources and water.
There are tender moments where they kind of bond but they push back, but they end up liking each other. And, as usual, turns out the guy is not even guilty of the crime they say he committed. He didn't kill a girl they all think he did, his dad did, but since he likes to inflict pain and his sub who died liked to take the pain, it was easy to set him up. But at the end of the day, he is just a BDSM guy who got set up. But I guess that's supposed to be the dark theme here.
If you ever read the book "Tears of Tess," it's the same ending. Only instead of living happily ever after in a mansion, it's an island.
And another thing that annoyed me was that this guy wanted her private area shaved so badly but from her description of him, this guy was a giant, hairy furball with Tarzan like hair and an overgrown beard. Gross! The cover of a six-pack, clean shaven guy is a total lie. Just gross and I didn't feel any chemistry with these two.

I did not finish it !!!!!!!!!! I gave up after the plane crash because the so called Anti Hero the first thing he did was force the girl into sex, "WTF" they have just survived a plane crash there are dead bodies on the beach Sharks in the water no way of escaping that we know of and that's his first thought , not interested in finding out anymore of the story. Others have given it 5 stars either they read a different book or it gets better but that scene has put me right off, plus the female lead is obnoxious she is an FBI agent and she gave in so quickly
I was hooked beginning to end and could not tear myself away. The characters are wonderful together, a chemistry that is so satisfying, the storyline is stunning, so is the writing . I can’t wait to read more from this author. This is a steamy standalone , with some BDSM elements .
Nadine was sent to capture Adrian after he was accused of murdering his submissive. She does her job but on the way to deliver him into custody, the plane crashes and they are the only survivors. Alone, the tables have been turned on Nadine and now she must figure out a way to survive. The story builds slowly and I was so engrossed that I didn't realize the time. Jane Henry takes the reader on a dark ride that is full of misunderstandings, twists and turns and finally the truth. But when rescue comes, will Nadine want to leave the island and the man? I highly recommend this book if you like dark romance. It's not so dark that it's horror but the dark elements make this whole story come to life!
Oh, what a story. This author never disappoints and this story is no exception. The blurb drew me in and this certainly starts with a bang. I loved the heroine Nadine right from the first page. Such a kick ass lady, and the way she takes Adrian down.... wow.
I was all l prepared to not like Adrian, at all. He certainly gives off the vibes of ruthless killer, until you get to know him along with Nadine. No spoilers from me. Let's just say you can't help falling in love with him once they're stranded on the island.
As truths are being revealed, and both their defensive walls crumble, as they have to rely on each other to survive... I could NOT put this book down. It utterly drew me in, from the characterisation of Nadine and Adrian to the awesome descriptions of the island. You really felt as though you were there with the two of them, and I so wanted them to get their HEA.
Will they? Can two people so different from each other truly make things work? And what happens when the real world intrudes on the two of them?
Well, you'll have to read the book to find out.
This is categorised as a dark romance, though, personally, I didn't find it very dark. Parts of it are full of gore, as you'd expect, their plane crashes after all, and being stuck on the island they have a certain amount of survival issues to overcome, but it's not overdone and needs to be in the story to make it believable.
This one started off pretty good but it quickly lost my interest and I ended up DNFing it.
I didn't like the heroine at all. She's one of these heroines who has more pride than common sense and I don't enjoy reading about those. I got a bad feeling when she started doing things that didn't even make sense in her pursuit of showing me what a badass she was. Like she bargains and agrees to do to-be-determined later things so that the H will come help her out of a situation, then when he drags his ass into the sea to help her, she balks and acts like she's just going to stand there and die rather than accept his help... that she JUST requested. And then he says he'll leave her ass out there to die and she seems to know he won't... but I don't know why, because this dude has no affection for her whatsoever yet and she is under the impression he is a murderer. But she's right, he won't (boring. I like my anti-hero a little harder. Tell her ass to drown if she's going to act like a child. She can stop acting like a 6 year old and save her own ass, or die and maybe you can find a heroine who isn't such a pain in the ass) and then he basically begs her to get in the boat, and she WAITS in the COLD WATER while he counts to three like a threatening parent, just to prove a point (no point was proven, other than she's nuts) rather than get in a life raft because it wasn't spacious enough for her, and God forbid her body brush his on the short journey back to shore.
That was my first red flag. I gave it a little longer to hopefully get past the hump, but nope. She grated on me and I didn't want to read any further. This one just didn't work for me.
Sometimes when I am entertained by the plot of a book I tend to subconsciously ignore all the other elements of the book in fear that they will ruin the experience of the read for me. This blissful ignorance lasts only so long, and that’s sadly what happened this time. I was carried away by the intriguing plot of Island Captive that I ignored the characterization of the two main leads and their interactions and how bland it all was. This book had the potential to be really heart wrenching and provoking but all I got was a underwhelming forced dom/sub story with an island backdrop. There wasn’t even any chemistry between the two leads, I was really expecting a sizzling slow build to the attraction between H and h but nope 👎. Everything was soo clinical and ughhhh, the part where he shaves her vagina was just too much and too clinical and gross!! Also how unbelievable is it that these two survived a PLANE CRASH and got away with barely any injuries, like WTF?? The biggest injury that was sustained was by the h when she had a shrapnel like piece stuck in her leg, which she just pulled out??? Then it somehow magically healed? Yeah NO!
While I am a firm believer of reading books for what they are and this book really was just a forced dom/sub smut with an island 🌴 backdrop, I really couldn’t help but expect more. I was really hoping to see two complicated characters with tragic pasts being forced to need each other for survival slowly but surely connect and fall in love while struggling to survive on a stranded island. All I got was this blandness and it took my dumbass to reach 65% of the book to realize that 😔 😔
The h is a US Marshall, who apprehends the criminal H. She is harsh with him as she thinks he is a deranged criminal. On the way, the plane crashes with only the H and h remaining survivors. The tables get turned quickly when the h becomes the prisoner of the H. Some BDSM. Then falling in loves. Then the h is rescued. But does she wants to ?
Honestly, the plot was amazing but the execution was not interesting. It was just average.
I feel like I must've read a different book than all the great reviewers. I was disappointed. BDSM content aside, I didn't find very much 'dark' about this story. I also didn't find very much believable about any of it, characters included. It was extremely cliche. That's just my take. Sorry for the bad review. It was written and edited well I just found the characters ridiculous.
I got about halfway through. There's not anything to the story except dom/sub scenario...for no reason. Honestly should have just made it about that and not tried to make Nadine into anything other than a submissive who REALLY wanted to have sex with some guy.
I don’t give up on a lot of books but this book has left me no choice! I tried and tried to get into it but it was all so far fetched it was hard not to continue to roll my eyes.
EMOTIVE, COMPELLING, and SENSUOUS, this sometimes dark and captivating tale is a MUST-READ! Absolutely fascinating on so many levels, this sensuous tale of a dark time and uncontrollable circumstances ultimately leads to an inspiring HEA. How that ending is achieved is the thrill of reading this masterfully written novel “ISLAND CAPTIVE,” the next MUST-READ offering from author Jane Henry. EVERYTHING I have ever read written by Jane Henry has knocked my socks off. Henry NEVER disappoints. Her prose is eloquent and easy to read. Her characters are realistic, flawed but lovable. In “ISLAND CAPTIVE,” author Henry has developed perhaps the strongest and most amazing “book-survivors” this reader has ever met! The “turn around” in my opinion of them was artfully crafted by the artistry of Henry’s words. Additionally, Henry’s plots are complex, unexpected and captivating! “ISLAND CAPTIVE” is no exception and gives readers all of the usual earmarks of Jane Henry’s cleverly built tension and suspense. In illustration, let me cite what happened as I was reading my advanced copy of “ISLAND CAPTIVE” on a recent flight. My chuckles, startled inhales, and tears had the lady sitting next to me inquiring about what I was reading. I told her most of what was written in the “ISLAND CAPTIVE” book blurb and added praises of author Henry’s masterful writing. She explained that she looks for books that can capture her imagination and emotions to such a degree that she can get lost in the story, and then shared that she had concluded from my utterings that I had perhaps found such a book. I totally agreed with her conclusion and explained that when offered the opportunity to receive an early ARC copy, I jumped at the chance to voluntarily read and honestly review “ISLAND CAPTIVE” because Henry’s writing is so consistently GREAT! Can I entice you dear readers to purchase Jane Henry’s captivating new book, “ISLAND CAPTIVE?” While it contains some light elements of BDSM and power exchange, (so 18+ years of age, please) it is well worth the price of admission and has received the HIGHEST 5+STAR review rating this reviewer can award. Purchase your copy of “ISLAND CAPTIVE” today and get lost in the story; you will be so glad you did! Happy pages! 😉
One of those books that’s been sat on my TBR for ages, I think maybe this year I will try and work through that a bit more 🤔🤥🤣
Anyway, it wasn’t as dark as I thought it would be but still there are aspects which some readers may not like, so ensure you read the warnings. Our FMC is a Marshall who is sent to Hawaii to capture a criminal, she’s done her homework on him and actually by chance finds him. They’re on a plane destined for the US when a fuel leak means they have to make a crash landing, unfortunately her partner, the two pilots are killed, she is left/rescued with her and the criminal, Adrian.
He’s a dominant in every sense of the word, he seeks revenge on her and thus starts to train her using various punishment methods; spanking, restraints, orgasm denial and tenderness. It works, but how long can they keep living like this without her escaping? Their story builds on a foundation of mistrust, denial, protectiveness and subsequently acceptance. Until the inevitable happens….
Another book I couldn’t put down until I finished it, it won’t be for everyone but that’s a good thing ☺️ I loved the back and forth play, her eventual submission and his role as a Dom, it wasn’t too heavy or extreme.
