I’m a USA Today bestselling romance author who’s passionate about fast-paced, emotion-filled romantic suspense and science-fiction romance. I love writing about people overcoming unbeatable odds and achieving seemingly impossible goals. I like to believe it’s possible for all of us to do the same.
I love hearing from readers and you can find me on Facebook, Instagram and my website: www.annahackett.com
If like myself you’ve read this authors Treasure Hunter Security books then you will well remember the somewhat shady government team that frequently showed up and frankly took over . Well now it’s time to learn a lot more about this elite team and it all starts with Lachlan as he is reunited with a blast from the past. Rowan never really had warm, loving parents as they were both too wrapped up in their respective careers but what she did have was a friend who stood by her , listened to her troubles and occasionally fed her forbidden chocolate ! Times change and people grow up and now Rowan is a respected scientist leading an expedition but when they dig up an ancient frozen disc death pretty soon follows ! This was fast paced and very entertaining. I particularly liked that Lachlan whilst coping with his own demons still had a deep abiding love for his team. If blunt the burgeoning romance does happen a wee bit quickly for my taste but I get that this couple do have a connection that was forged through adversity and it felt right that they should reconnect. Rowan isn’t a pushover by any stretch of the imagination and clearly Lachlan needed a woman who could roll with the punches and boy does Rowan do that and more as this mile a minute story unfolds. The actual storyline did almost remind me initially of a movie ( The Thing anyone?) but if honest the author concentrated more on the forces in play as various new factions make their presence felt. It is a book that’s has quite a lot of new characters so expect numerous descriptions as supporting characters are introduced each with their own quirks and personalities. I thoroughly enjoyed the action although I wasn’t totally enamoured with the little scene that clearly is meant as a teaser for the next book as having read other books by this very imaginative author it did feel somewhat formulaic. That being said if you want steamy adventure with a very different type of paranormal thrown in then this book ticks all those boxes and I very much look forward to reading more. This voluntary take is of an advance copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
This book is exactly that and more, what Anna Hackett promised. A high octane action, suspense, romance. Beginning of the book gave me serious creeps as I went to read this completely blind. Eagerly waiting for more books from this series. Recommended. Going to read the Treasure Hunter series next.
This was a nice start to the Team 52 series, which will seem to include all the Mission books. It kicks off with Mission: Her Protection, and while this was pretty good for a series opener, it worked less well and doesn't really hold up as a standalone story or interesting romance.
Anna Hackett definitely knows how to set the tone fast and easily introduce the readers to the set of characters we'll be reading about the whole series, taking turns as MCs. And with all the genre-hopping that Anna Hackett does, between sci-fi romance to romantic suspense, that's an amazing quality to have and keeps things fresh for the reader, even if it sometimes skews unbelievable; at least for me, if it's interesting enough with good, engaging writing, I can overlook some unbelievability.
But what this book relied on was not all that, or at least just that. There was also an air of repetition through the book, particularly when the plot got going and the two MCs got much more involved with each other. There was a point where everything became formulaic. MMC is off doing his job, FMC does something she's not supposed to and gets kidnapped, MMC goes to rescue her with the grumbling variations of the line "I gotta keep her on a leash" or "Lock her in the room on the bed" and so on and so forth. This happened at least 3 times, and with a page count this low (like 203 pages?), that's not great.
But I'm glad I read it because it does do a good job at setting up the series, which I'm still excited to continue!
I'll start with what I didn't like: Lachlan is mercurial and seemed overbearing. He kept telling Rowan not to put herself into danger. She didn't always do the most brilliant thing, but he didn't need to keep telling her what to do. Also, he pushes her away, then pulls her in several times. So I wasn't convinced he was for her. He kept going on about how he wasn't good enough for her. I began to think so, but not for the reasons he did.
Here's what I liked: The mythology and the artifacts used a pretty original spin on ancient civilizations. The way the artifact works is pretty cool! The baddies had simple but compelling motives. I really felt for the monster. Also, this book's a lot of page-turning fun.
Here's what may or may not work for you: This book is effectively an action movie. So many action scenes. Clear, well-directed, but the pace is quite fast. Speaking of fast, the relationship happens quite fast. They knew each other decades ago, but your mileage may vary. There's a giant cast of characters to get to know. I received a review copy.
'Team 52' is Anna Hackett's spin-off from her Treasure Hunter Security series, so expect the storylines to be written in a similar vein: adventure-driven with some suspense included as this mysterious team goes off the books to retrieve dangerous (read: as equally mysterious as the team that does it) artefacts and keep them classified. It's got its feet fully set on earth, while prodding the mystery of advanced civilisations, crossed with some archaeological leanings, so Indiana Jones fans should be quite overjoyed.
Like Hackett's THS books, expect the team to battle unscrupulous treasure hunters, crime syndicates and other badasses which can only be fought with more badassery. As a foundational book, 'Mission: Her Protection' lays out the direction in which the series appears to be going: a slew on books focusing on the team at work, with each member finding their better half along the way.
Rowan Schafer is the rather hapless heroine sorely in need of Team 52's help in this story, though little does she know that Lachlan Hunter used to be the boy next door whom she used to take comfort in, all grown up and a badass in his own right.
The instalove here is somewhat disconcerting - I find myself constantly saying this with Hackett's books in any case - and that a near-20-year-old memory of an early-teenage friendship seemed to be sufficient for Lachlan to change his mind about love and relationships within the span of a few days with Rowan.
The scepticism I have about the solidness of the pairing aside, 'Mission: Her Protection' does get off an interesting start in any case, though I'm crossing my fingers that this crossover would be more of a showcase of Hackett's impressive imagination rather than a rinse and repeat of the THS series.
MISSION: HER PROTECTION was one hell of a start to a series! Crammed full of action, adventure, and a smoldering relationship. Anna Hackett is a master at fast paced romantic suspense and I hated putting this book down for even a second.
I was intrigued by Team 52 when we caught glimpses of them in the TREASURE HUNTER SECURITY series and I was not disappointed. The action barely lets up the whole way through and this kept me reading to find out what was going to happen next. We also met the other members of Team 52 and I was fascinated, intrigued, and if I'm being honest, mildly obsessed with each new character.
Rowan and Lachlan haven't seen each other in a long time but they have a history as childhood friends. When they reunite the chemistry was immediate and on fire between these two though it's certainly a good dose of insta-love, which I didn't mind at all.
Rowan was smart, brave, and refused to give up no matter what happened. She was also a bit of a trouble magnet which drove Lachlan up the wall. While I don't necessarily think Rowan getting involved in the fighting was the best choice, I can't deny she holds her own with Team 52.
Though he plays the cold and walled off leader, Lachlan is full of honor and loyalty to his people and to those he cares about. He thinks Rowan deserves someone better than him but he also can't stay away from the first woman who's ever touched his heart. I loved watching Lachlan soften and show a more vulnerable side to his gruff exterior.
I can't wait to read more in the TEAM 52 series because I loved every one of these characters!
Content Warning: survivors guilt and grief; Rowan's parents were emotionally neglectful; brief mentions of Lachlan's father likely having PTSD resulting in alcoholism and abuse before he commits suicide
Anna Hackett is a hit or miss author for me in the sense that a lot of her books just don't interest me, but the ones that I have read have been 4-5 star reads. I like her writing style because it's quick and filled with action - I almost didn't go to bed last night because I just couldn't stop reading. The plot just kept flowing so fast and smooth, I could have easily finished the entire book in one sitting. So obviously, I recommend it.
But as much as I enjoyed it, I can't give it 5 stars and I'm almost leaning closer to 3.5 stars than 4 stars because the author repeatedly relied on the same plot twist like 6 different times. I can't mention it at all because it would spoil a whole lot, but I can say that it got unbelievable, annoying, and tired after the 3rd time. So obviously, I'm not very happy about that.
That being said, I had a hella good time. Hackett writes an awesome and exciting action-adventure story. There were some sexy times - graphic but not lengthy - and I love the sci-fi slant. It ends up being an urban lite-fantasy/contemporary romance/suspense/action/military... I don't even know. Like a space opera without the space, but you can't just call it an opera because that's confusing as fuck. Whatever. It was fun and funny and sexy and there wasn't a ton of character development, but the MCs had enough backstory to make me care about whether they lived or died. So obviously, I dig it.
I look forward to Seth's story next and I'm glad I was reminded of the Treasure Hunter Security series because I really liked the debut and then forgot all about keeping track of the series.
Edit: I forgot to mention, the opening scene is fan-fucking-tastic and straight out of "The Thing" in all the best ways. If you're on the fence about this one, read the Kindle sample and I swear you'll be hooked.
Mission: Her Protection is book one in the Team 52 series by Anna Hackett. Dr. Rowan Schafer was leading a scientific research team in Northern Canada. However, after retrieving a strange object from the ice, a strange event happened at the camp, and A military group called Team 52 came to the rescue to help Dr. Rowan Schafer. However, unbeknown to Team 52 and Dr. Rowan Schafer, this is not the end of the matter; someone wants the object her team retrieved from the ice. Mission: Her Protection readers will continue to follow Dr. Rown Schafer to discover what happens.
Mission: Her Protection is another fantastic book by Anna Hackett and an excellent roller-coaster ride on every page of this book. Team 52 is another series I can enjoy reading from Anna Hackett. I engaged with the characters and the plot from the first page. I love Anna Hackett's portrayal of her characters and the way they interact with each other throughout this book. Mission: Her Protection is well-written and researched by Anna Hackett. I like Anna Hackett's description of the settings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
Mission: Her Protection readers will learn about running a scientific research team. Also, the readers will understand the importance of providing a lovely, supportive environment for children to grow.
An exciting start for a new series! What a story! It has a touch of ‘alien’ / sci-fi intrigue, fascinating new characters to dream about, and many new story possibilities with this crew. We’ve seen them briefly in the Treasure Hunter Security books; now is our chance to meet them ‘up close and personal.’ I absolutely love the nuances and connections of Rowan and Lachlan. Their magnetism, their love for each other burns white hot. An excellent read!
This is not a very long book. At 1x4 speed, it was about 4 hours. I did enjoy the Area 52 reference and the premise of a team tasked with collecting and safeguarding dangerous artefacts.
The H/h knew each other as children and met up again when our hero's Team 52 was sent to retrieve an artefact responsible for the deaths of our heroine's scientific team. Their previous connection did make it easier to accept their insta-love.
There's also some crossover with the Treasure Hunter series that I haven't yet read. But all in all, this appears to be another sexy and action-packed series from Ms Hackett.
I just wasn’t feeling it.... For me this one was just a miss... I could see Ms.Hackett seemed to have done her research, I didn’t look up Dorset or pre-Dorset ppl and all that ,either that or she’s a very convincing at faking it..... good set up as far as I could see but I just was wasn’t feeling Lachlan or Rowan ( even though Rowan is the name one of favorite h’s from goddess with a blade series ) and lol 😂 their names make them sound like they should be in a historical romance book set in Scotland) ( or time travel)( love time travel w/Scottish men ) I couldn’t feel they chemistry here..... I totally got Rowan and the neglect and pain she felt from her selfish, self absorbed parents who seem to think everything revolves around them ,yeah I get that.... Really I do... But Lachlan and his push, pull, this I want her, I need her to kiss and caress and protect and comfort, then “O ,No I can’t .” Th n he’s pushing he away again ...
I never like that sorta BS in a book,my characters can’t be perfect because end in a story it can’t really exist.... it would be boring ... but.. but I prefer my H and h to say what they mean and mean what they mean and don’t play silly games .... Especially when pulling away from someone w/Rowan’s history of rejection( a history Lachlan witnessed first hand ?) it really got annoying ... First Rowan just barely survives her research base being attacked, then when she’s brought back to the states and Lachlan has pushed her away at least twice she’s dropped off at a hotel before the leaves for “home” in NYC( I don’t feel like Rowan really has a home anywhere) she’s attacked and almost killed and when Lachlan witnesses this while trying to rescue her he tells himself seeing her almost die changes things..... Right... Takes her to his place, she spends the night and still the push pull goes on..... Later back at supposedly secure “top secret” base, the priceless artifact Rowan’s team found is stolen off the base and then guess what ? Lachlan who’s supposedly vowing to protect her leaves her all alone w/just a single female colleague( an archaeologist) at yet another hotel ( MGM Grand or not) we all know they ARE NOT the safest places to be,and of course Lachlan has barely and I do mean barely left her there, when the women are attacked and Rowan kidnapped... Right, like we didn’t see that coming.... Then when Lachlan says this: ( after rescuing her yet again )
“For now, you stay where I can protect you.” Lachlan didn’t explain to her exactly what kind of enhanced security his apartment had, but he knew she’d be safe here.
Really ?!? She’d be safe there with you ? Then why the F wasn’t she with you to begin with and not in some lame hotel where ANYONE could get her ? Huh ? I thought after seeing her falling off a roof to her death you were gonna step up Lachlan but instead you leave her at another hotel to be kidnapped .... Lachlan lost major alpha male points for that .... at 56% of the book and the H pulling such lame boneheaded moves I just couldn’t make myself care any more.... Ms.Hackett is an amazing writer in my opinion but this just wasn’t doubt it for me... If someone asked ? I’d say try it you might like it,Ms.Hackett is definitely worth taking a chance on... Maybe next time Ms. Hackett for me.... maybe next time ...
When Dr. Rowan Schafter’s arctic expedition pulls a strange metal object from the ice and things quickly start going wrong. Her team is attacked by a mysterious ice creature and is killed. The only way she survives is to hide until help comes. What she doesn’t expect is to be rescued by a covert black ops team led by her childhood friend Lachlan Hunter.
This was a hell of a start to a new series. I was instantly captivated by the story and characters. Team 52 has appeared a few times in the Treasure Hunter Security series and were very mysterious. I am so glad they are getting their own series now. Now that we know the team I really can’t wait to learn more about each one and see them find happiness, while kicking butt!
Lachlan is the leader of Team 52. He is protective, determined, and full of honor. He keeps people at a distance because of his abusive father. The only person he ever really let in was Rowan, the girl he grew up with. I really liked Lachlan. He was so protective of Rowan and so sweet with her. He really shows his softer side around her and it was just perfect. I love seeing big protective men be sweet and caring.
Rowan was smart, brave, and determined to see the mission through. She also had an unhealthy addiction to chocolate, which I can relate to. I loved her. She wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed in. She was also a trouble magnet it seemed, which caused Lachlan to frequently freak out on her. These had instant chemistry that quickly led to hardcore feelings. Seeing them fall for each other was perfect and I loved all the action in between.
Anna Hackett is truly a master at creating action adventure romances with kickass characters. If you are a fan of her Treasure Hunter Security series, or any of her series really, you should definitely try this series.
CW: death of friends and coworkers; death of a parent by suicide mentioned; unemotional parents; torture mentioned; PTSD;
Having read the majority of Ms Hacketts books I have to say that this one was a bit of a let down. This series will be linked to the Treasure Hunter Security tales and introduces a new military backed team who all seem to great people who have been sourced from various military winds after some traumatic event. Their main job is to retrieve devices of power that may let on to the rest of the world that that human populations have been around for a lot longer than science currently lets on.
I have several issues with this book but my main one was the heroine. She really irritated me with her CONSTANT harping on about how her parents had not loved her enough and how they only cared for their academic careers. This would be OK in a 19 year old but the woman is supposed to be 31. You would have thought that by that age you would have come to terms with parenting issues enough that it would not be something that you revisited pretty much every few pages of the book.
This is a short story and there really in not much emotional development in the relationship between the H and the h. Slow burner it is not.
That said, the story is OK and it sets up the background for future books. Personally I will not be reading more of this series but if you are after a quick, fun read with Alpha-type males and intelligent but vulnerable heroines then this is the book (and probably the series) for you.
We've seen the mysterious Team 52 quite a few times in our beloved Treasure Hunter Security books and but let me tell you - we ain't seen nothing yet!! This book was so good! I don't have enough exclamation points for the way I feel about it.
Don’t know why but I needed a break with historical romance, and I know with Anna Hackett, it is always a winner for me. I had this first book in a series shelved in my kindle since its release but contemporary romance is not my favorite. But after reading the two books in her Eon Warriors series, I thought to give it a try. And I’m happy to have done it. Still I prefer science fiction, but the mystery about the strange artefacts played a great role in my liking of this story. Even if the heroine Rowan is not the usual b@d@ss like in the Galactic Gladiators or the Eon Warriors series, she is a scientific but when threatened she fights back and does not cower. I liked she stands her ground and does not run away in battle and love. Lachlan is the classic wounded hero bearing his guilt for not having been able to save everybody, but it was great for a change to not have a bitter and angry man, he is alright afraid to take a jump in a relationship because of his living but he still stays close to Rowan and is able to see the wrong in his decision. This book introduces too plenty of characters m, each whom will have its own story, I will read now I took the plunge.
I really wasn't sure what to expect with the Team 52 series. I found the ancient civilization/mythical objects twist intriguing. The team's stories, lead by Lachlan Hunter, promise to be interesting. Rowan Schafer spent her childhood trying to garner her parents' love and approval. It never happened and still isn't. Now after a horrendous tragedy she's reconnected with the only person she ever felt truly cared about her. Lachlan thinks he too damaged for a relationship plus he's consumed by his job. But when Rowan is suddenly endangered and there's a threat to his city, Las Vegas, absolutely nothing will stop him from eliminating the threat. Admitting his feelings for this intelligent, brave, seemingly unflappable and beautiful woman gives him peace. Rowan knows she has to protect her heat but this man captured it when they were kids and that's never changed.
Another adventure series from AH! This is a spin off from Treasure Hunter Security. Team 52 is a black ops group that chases down unusual technological artefacts that are often found in archaeological sites, which is where they have previously run into our friends at THS. In this story they fly to northern Canada where a research team have fun into trouble. The leader of Team 52, Lachlan Hunter, realises that he knows Dr Rowan Schafer, the leader of the research team. Mind you she's changed a lot in the intervening years. Not surprising since she was only ten at the time and wasn't quite as sexy as she is today. As usual there's a lot of action and romance to keep the reader glued to the page. An absolute pleasure to read!
I’m going to be honest here. The writing isn’t great but it’s passable. The author uses a lot of cliche phrases, the characters are one demential, and even the sex scenes were flat. The moment the author mentioned the heroine’s childhood friend as “the intense boy next door” I knew it was going to be the man who would rescue her and fall in love with her. That’s just sloppy. Rowan, the heroine, couldn’t keep her ass out of trouble which was supposed to be brave but I think it’s just stupidity. The action scenes were far fetched and ignored Physiology and the laws of physics. However, the story was entertaining and I really wanted to finish the book because I was intrigued to see who the author would pick as the next book’s hero and to see how Rowan’s parents ended up.
I've only read one other book by this author, and I confess it didn't really grab me. But since she came so highly recommended, I tried a different series by Ms. Hackett. And I'm so glad I did! I loved this! There is so much going on in this story--military romance (Team 52 is made up of veterans, and they're tasked with retrieving powerful artifacts and protecting the people who might be harmed by them.), some steamy romance, plenty of action & adventure, and a little sci-fi thrown in. I'm so glad the other books in this series are already available. I intend to load them all onto my Kindle and binge read.
I can't wait to read the stories about the rest of the team and their significant others as they face off against some very bad people, reveal a few secrets, save the planet (or at least their part of it) and fall in love.
This starts off with something out of your worse nightmare. Something is found that needs to be hidden away but before that happens it is triggered and people die. The devise gets away but one person survives. This has some very good world building and back story. I liked the characters. Both the main characters and the side characters were very well developed. There was a slight SciFi twist as the devise has a cloudy history and Team 52 has their headquarters right next to Area 51. Nice start to a new series.
Solid story. But I think I’m spoiled by one of Anna’s other series. Rowan is a researcher whose entire team is killed on a mission by a mysterious being. Lachlan leads the team to rescue her and recover a artifact Rowan’s team found. What ensues is an action packed adventure filled with near misses and abduction attempts. In the midst of it all, Rowan and Lachlan fall in love. The sex is hot but I felt there should’ve been more. The story around the artifact could’ve been better. I just felt like something was missing. But, even Anna’s worse is better than the majority of books out there in this genre. I give this a solid 3.5
Lachlan and Rowan's story was terrific. This is going to be another great series. There is plenty of danger, action adventure, excitement and romance. We've had glimpses of Team 52 in the THS series and now we get to meet these tough and interesting people. This team gathers and secures dangerous artifacts. The artifact in this book is fascinating but very dangerous.
The book starts with a bang and the pace and action stay swift and hard for the duration of this spectacular start to a new series! Heros, foes, and sweet, sweet romance abound and kept my attention focused on the pages. DEFINITELY recommend this book!!!!!!
A good start to this new series by Anna Hackett. Lachlan and Rowan were great characters, and the dynamic interaction of the support characters made this an engaging read.
