After what should have been one of the happiest nights of her life turned tragic, Gwyn decides to run away from England and everything she knew and loved. For four years, she lived in India far away from memories of the man who had broken her heart to pieces. But, then an urgent letter suddenly arrives and beckons her to return home! Her family is in shambles and her father sick. She has little choice but to do her part and step back into society. That would have been a lot easier, if Jack Shelton, the man who taught her to put trust in no one, had not returned from war. How can she move on when her thoughts seem determined to surround the man?
Four years ago, Jack decided to join the army, when the woman he had loved fiercely had fled with no sign as to why. Now it's time Jack returns home, to find himself in an unexpected situation. Not only did his family call upon him to redeem their name, but Jack is also forced to face Gwyn Stanton. This woman left him questioning everything, when she raced off to India without a word as to why she had broken off their engagement. As much as Jack tries to do what he must for his family's sake, Gwyn is everywhere. Why does she seem to hate him so much?
The announcements of Jack's impending betrothal and Gwyn's own ardent suitor seem to mean the end for everything that Jack and Gwyn might rekindle… but can this love really be buried? Will they show their true feelings to each other after all these years?
The Captain of Her Betrayed Heart is a historical romance novel of approximately 80,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.
Why do authors mistake take the genre of romance as an opportunity to proffer poor writing, abysmal plots and idiotic characters? 1. The writing was amateurish at best, consisting mostly of dialogue and very little exposition. 2. The plot was shallow, idiotic, and unbelievable. Interrupted weddings managed to be kept secret and out of the gossip windmills although they involve a duke, but small indiscretions rose to the level of ignominy. 3. Everyone in this book is suffering from extreme depression (dealing with the devices of this plot, i can't really blame them) or from enervation as everyone, both male and female resort to sleeping every three pages or so, anytime something became difficult. I eventually just began to search for the next "I'm tired, i don't feel well, or I'm going to bed" in order to facilitate my completion of this novel. 4. So many themes that are difficult to believe: A heroine who can't distinguish the love of her life from his brother; A mother who concedes to the wishes of her 16 year old daughter without even an inquiry; The ending of a longstanding betrothal without even a question, but then years later when more egregious things float to the surface, longstanding impressions are overturned without the blink of an eye. 5. The events that took place in this novel reveal that the author has very little understanding of the period in which she places her characters. There is barely any actual romance in this novel between the hero and heroine with the exception of one or two paragraphs and the epilogue. To each her own but if you want a clever and stimulating regency /historical romance with a credible plot and appealing characters (flawed or not) this may not be the novel for you.
This is a well-rounded novel. I enjoyed reading it all the way through. It took about five hours to read and was moderately paced. The characters were developed and personable. Very realistic. The simple storyline of two young people destined to be together, thwarted by misunderstandings resulting in unnecessary heartbreak. At that time, a woman did not have much control over the matches her parents may arrange as opposed to the men who could choose whom they wed. However, male or female. both had to put family first. This story is about trust, loyalty, family, betrayal, lies, deceit, secrets, scandals and true love. There are no open bedroom scenes. This is a clean romance. Gwyn Stanton and Jack Shelton lived in neighboring manors and grew up together. When Gwyn was sixteen and Jack was nineteen they were already sweethearts. Gwyn knew she was destined to marry Jack and he felt the same way about her. Gwyn had just returned from visiting her aunt in India when she saw something that absolutely devastated her. As a result, she ended up running back to India. When Jack heard of Gwyn's sudden departure, Jack was left bewildered, confused and forlorn. He set off for the army, to war. Four years later Gwyn receives a letter in India from her mother requesting her immediate return to England because her father is ill. She has but one thought, Jack. Would she see him? Could she avoid him? When Gwyn is finally home, she learns that Jack had left for the army and has only now returned. But what waited for them both was resentments, incriminations, falsehoods, stubbornness, jealousy and other unsavory things. I do recommend this book. You will not be dissapointed. As a bonus, there is a link at the end for an extended epilogue. This is well worth the time.
Why can't people just talk to each other instead of jumping to conclusions that alter their entire life?
Well, if we didn't have these two young conclusion jumpers, there would be no need for This book📑.
Sixteen year old Gwyn💃💋 has just returned to England from India and runs to see her beloved Jack🐺, who lives in the estate next door. When she sees a young woman laughing with him on a balcony, she assumes the very worst of her young man.
Gwyn💃💋 goes back to her home and tells her mother a big fat lie in order to save face, she thinks. She tells her mother she wants to return immediately to India, and makes up a suitor there. It's a complete fabrication.
Jack🐺, the true love of her life, tries to see her, but her mother denies him, relating Gwyn's lies to him as an excuse. Devastated, Jack🐺 joins the Army. The idiot, jealous Gwyn💃💔 has ruined both their young lives in an uninformed, spoiled fit of anger. Four years later, both of them are back home in England. Jack is home from The Army, and Gwyn💃💋 has to come back and take charge of The family estate. She is also betrothed to a sergeant, a man she doesn't love.
Jack's older brother, Henry, in line to become the duke, is also a meddler. Could be bad, could be good.
If you love angsty 📚books, you will love this novel because it will have your heart 💕tied up in knots! I liked this well written romance💘, but it has too much angst for me.
I plowed through the whole thing, although I did have to take several breaks for the sake of my sanity. Cloying, annoying dramatics as one might expect from a pubescent teen's pen fill the pages of this story and the repetition of the core plot point makes it obvious that the author needed to swell the word count to get it published. Don't waste your time.
I will say this, it takes almost half the book before you really get anything interesting enough for a good read. However, once you get to the point where it is interesting then you a story full of twists and intrigue. The writing is fair but something is just missing to have that gotta read nonstop.
Henry the older big brother that feels he can do whatever he wants and damn the consequences. Tall, brooding, and devil may care attitude. Heir to the Duke title. Jack younger brother also talk handsome and the "perfect" son. Gracious, kind, and the family peace-keeper. Gwenyth, or Gwen, the girl next door. Tomboy growing up, only child, and never gets all the information before she does something.
Gwen arrives home from touring the continent and India with her aunt. She is excited to see her sweetheart, Jack, but has to wait for the rain to stop. When finally it does she runs, yes runs, to see him only to stop short as there he is with another woman. Hurting and unable to believe what to do back home she goes to tell her mother she is returning to India with her aunt. Jack now curious as to why Gwen has not come over to greet him goes to Teen's only to be told she is leaving to return to India. Hurt and confused Jack joins the army and fights in the Napoleon war. Four years has gone by now and Gwen has been summoned home due to an ill father. Jack is now Captain Shelton and home from the war. Henry is still acting out but Lady Shelton has decided it is time for the boys to marry.
Here is when it gets to the good part and the twist and intrigue. What happens is a maddeningly stubborn girl not saying why or asking why it was done to blame everyone else for her refusal to get the true facts. A tampered with journal, a spurned suitor, a speak her mind friend, two determined mother's who are friends and neighbors, plus an ill father brings this story life and spark. The madcap adventure brings with Jack's journal being tampered with and given to the spurned suitor. Add to the mix with the mother's wanting to help each other and their children get past hurts and betrayal. Out a dash of plain speaking friendship in the mix and you have the second half of the book that gets your attention and creases the mystery that you have to finish just to see if what you think will happen does. Then there is another twist added and all goes wild from there.
This is a good but different type of book. I don't mean that in a bad way. It is an unusual book. Gwen is in love with her neighbor, Jack since childhood. After seeing him in the arms of another woman after returning from India, she runs away, back to India. Upon receiving a letter from her mother, her father is ill, and she must return home, Gwen relunctly packs up to return home. She refuses to talk to Jack. When a suitor arrives from India, with intentions to court Gwen, she agrees whole heartedly. When scandals rocks Jack and his family, Gwen admits Jack wouldn't do such a thing, and also admits she still loves Jack. When Gwen expects a proposal from her suitor, she is surprised when he shows up at her home, angry and in possession of Jack's journal. He says their courtship is over. Enter Henry, Jack's brother and heir to the family title. On the day Henry and Gwen are to marry Jack shows up in time to stop the wedding. However, Gwen no longer recognizes her childhood sweetheart, after reading his journal, and wants nothing to do with him. Will Gwen marry Jack or Henry? Who inherits Jack's family title? Jack wants it and Henry doesn't or does he? Can Gwen trust her heart when it comes to the rest of her life?
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
It all ways when Gwyn returned home from her aunt's house and wanted to tell Jack she was home. But instead she thought it was Jack out on the porch with another woman that she decides to return as so as possible to her aunt's house. But that is where all of Henry's cruel acts really started to hurt people. Then there was one scandal after another until he dragged Jack into after returning from the Army and Gwyn returning home because of her sick father. She This was a very amazing book. Her writing kept you go where I couldn't put it down. There where parts that I fell in love with and parts I disliked. I thought it was very cruel the Henry could pull such mean things on a friend that they grew up with but then I guess I can seeing how Jack was his sweetheart and they where suppose to get married. So Henry did things to stop Gwyn from marring Sargent Chavers and that put her in the arms of marring Henry. That only happy because he doctored Jacks journal to again make Jack the bad man.I would recommend you read this books because I am not going to put the ending in because that is no fun all I have to say it is a very interesting book and I loved it and I could read it again and again.

ONE AWESOME SLAM DUNK!!! Talk about stabbing someone while their back is turned. This tale is one action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, backstabbing, betrayal, deceitful, suspense filled with selfishness reigning over all. The twists and turns, ups and downs, lies and mistrust have everyone looking over their shoulder, ready for "A FRIEND" to stab them also. The characters are portrayed in such a realistic fashion that it's easier to relate to them. Their personalities are complex, well developed and believable. The qualities and traits are vast and varied in a way they play off one another with such a perfect balance. You feel as though you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are graphic and detailed in such a vivid scheme it paints a picture with such realism your drawn deeper. Lady Abigail wields her words as skillfully and precise as a surgeon with his scalpel. Remarkable job Lady Abigail, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
Lies Lies Lies , only trumped by deceit. I loved it
When Gwyn returns from India after a year away, she can't wait to see her sweetheart who is also her neighbor. When she approaches the house she sees him on the balcony with his back to her and from the female laughter she hears, he is not alone. Feeling betrayed she turns around and runs home. Once there she tells her mother she wants to go back to India to live permanently with her Aunt.
Jack is expecting Gwyn to visit him upon her return and when she doesn't he goes to her house only to be told she is going back to India forever. With no explanation of her decision he also feels betrayed and joins the military. This story takes place four years later when they both return to their home for different reasons. The convoluted mess that results is because of lack of communication. If she had only asked for an explanation their lives could have been very different.
This story is a case of mistaken identity and a immature girl who runs away instead of facing the truth. It costs them fours years of being together, and the workings of an evil brother who plans to keep them apart forever. I still found Gwyn immature even at the end of the story and feel she never actually grew into the woman she should have been. I understand Jack's anger and the sadness of never knowing why Gwyn ran away. When Henry made Jack a pariah in his own family, I am glad Jack decided to fight when he saw that his diary had been rewritten. I loved Jack, but I felt that Gwyn deserved everything that was happening to her, because she is stupid, naive, never learn to trust the one man who really truly loved her, and listened to a man who was never trustworthy. This story is passionate and made me angry, because I hate women who are stupid and Gwyn is stupid.
Gwyn grew up with Jack and Henry. It was assumed Gwyn and Jack would marry. After a trip to India, Gwyn went to see Jack. She saw Jack with his back to her on the balcony kissing another woman. Without clarifying that it was Jack and without asking him for an explanation, she returns home and goes back to India. Four years later she returns home as her father is ill. She again runs into Jack who still doesn’t know why she left him. The lies and the betrayal just seem to grow. This was a great romance and a book you won’t want to put down. I was annoyed with Gwyn that she made assumptions, ran away and didn’t demand the truth. But she was only 16 and immature so I can’t really blame her. Great job!
Jack and Gwyn. They were childhood sweethearts. Then a lot of twists and turns, ups and downs. This book has deceit, lies, betrayal, drama, romance, suspense. They both run away for different reasons. Gwyn goes to her Aunts in India. Jack joins the Army. Then they come home. Jack is now a Captain. Gwyn comes home because of her father's failing health. Then Henry gets into this and weaves into her life too.😕. Jack is a righteous man 🚹. Henry is mean. Gwyn is easily manipulated. Finally truth prevails. Well worth the read. I loved most of the characters. Guess who I didn't. The story will keep you turning the pages.
#15 Gifted to you on Bookhoarders Challenge I received a copy for an Honest review.

I’d you can see in my highlights and notes, this story is t the best for me. The sibling backstabbing, brainwashing of 2 sets of parents and the future wife, manipulating, the lies, the pain, all this just from Henry Jack’s older brother and titled rouge will pull just to get to marry a respected woman and his baby mama on the side. Jack went from friend to supposed enemy do his own family and friends because his brother was jealous of him. I had to skip because I honestly wasn’t going to relax and read his manipulations right and left. It was disgusting to read his ‘words or love’ toward Gwyn and words of hate about his brother towards Gwyn. I would warn you if you want to read it fine, it’s a clean Victorian London story, not really a romance story, but be cautious.
"The Captain of Her Betrayed Heart" by Abigail Agar This was a good story.. even though I did not like the words and actions between the two characters that were supposed to have undying love for each other. I spent a lot of energy being angry with just about all of the characters. But in the end... it seems that everyone ended up in their happily ever after. I did like Jack the best of all the characters. He stayed true to himself despite those he cared most for. I was gifted an ARC of this story by the author. This was a difficult read for me... as I grew too often frustrated with the characters.
Jack and Gwyn has grown up next door to each other. When Gwyn finished her yr of touring the world and came back expecting Jack to purpose. When a misunderstanding tears them apart she goes to stay with her aunt in India. When her father falls ill she must return. Jack puzzled by Gwyn leaving after she got back decides to join the military. He arrives back home at the same time as Gwyn. The whole Book is misunderstanding upon misunderstanding! I’m glad it finally had a HEA! I enjoyed the Book especially the ending. It did drone on for a bit too long. The language and customs didn’t really fit with regency romance but the story line was original.
Gwen was shocked upon returning from India to see what she thought was Jack with another female. She returned to India until summoned home by her mother because of her fAther's failing health. She was prepared to marry the Captian chosen by her mother to rescue the families fortune. Jack's brother Henry interferes and undermines everyone with his dispeatble actions. Luckily his trechery was discovered and eventually all ended well. Gave it 5 stars
I'm giving this 5 stars because it didn't have sex scene romance, which I very much appreciate. It was well written. There was a major twist in the story that I didn't particularly enjoy, however life has twists and I guess not all happily ever after are easily achieved. I thought the main woman was too quick to jump to conclusions...but again, many of us do in real life.
I really enjoyed this story about the misconceptiond of a 16 year old girl. Well written and believable. The uneasiness of not clarifying an awkward situation. So she goes away without clarifying, and returns to india. Later she comes back, he never knew why she left. The twists and turns keep you reading and wanting more. You will read without putting it down. I received an ARCand am voluntarily reviewing.
It was interesting in its own way with the h's struggles and insecurities. However, about half way through the twist was almost too far fetched and everyone turned on the H. I was disappointed because the story was sooo very drawn out until she gets what she always wanted and then it felt rushed because the author didn't show us the how. Now THAT could have been spectacular.
One star.. Worst book ever!!!... She was dum, dum Gwyn was stupid lady how can you know a man all her life and one small thing and you run.. No trust at all...She continue to do it with the help of her mother and Jack's parents..Jack took the girl back at the end, he fought for his rights..Against his parents and his brother..Not a good author, not a good book.
This book was a very fast read with lots of twists and turns. I realky enjoyed the easy read and it kept my attention the whole time. I wanted to kerp reading to see what would happen. I really liked Jack and Gwyn and loved the childhood they had and the friendship they had. This was a very good story about communication and how things get all mixed up when you just assume. I did feel like the ending was a little rushed but it was still good.
To see something and miss interpreting to be the person you were going to see. To leave for a long time To come back because your father had taken ill and try to forget what you saw. To have a brother try to discredit his young brother and blame him for his mistake and when the truth came out that is was the older brother who did wrong. To find happiness with your child hood friend.
Great story wonderful characters great story line.Qwyn as been in love with Jack sense they were kids, and Jack as loved her.So when Jack,s brother,s is seen by Qwyn messing with the maid ,she thinks it's Jack.Heart broken Qwyn runs away to Paris, leaving Jack to learn years later what had happened to their Perfect love. Can this love survive. It does when Jack becomes a pirate. Thank you ❤️
This book keeps you wondering as you read the story of Gwyn and Jack. There are some twists and turns in it, but it is truly a great read. I received this for a voluntary and honest review. I would recommend this book. Abigail writes wonderful books and I am looking forward to reading more of her work.
I recieved this book free for an honest review. I enjoyed reading this GREAT mystery romance. I kept me constantly wondering what the young lady was going to do and whom she was going to marry. She knew she had to marry someone with money to save her family because she was an only child and her father has dementia. Really greatly enjoyed this fine book.
The Captain of Her Betrayed Heart was a well written and entertaining Regency book. It is a book where misunderstanding are everywhere and deception is ever present. You find yourself getting angry at certain characters for the actions they have taken in the book that could potentially destroy a person. The end is very satisfying and this book will certainly keep you engaged throughout.
Boring beyond belief! The dialogue is much too modern for the purported era and the story is loooooong and dull!
I only gave one star in order to write this review and give fair warning to those readers who wish to read a 'real' historical fiction book....this book is ridiculous.
Running away never helps. This is a story of miscommunication all around and it caused so many problems for jack and Gwyn. The book is a bit different and it is very good at showing the problems that being too stubborn can cause. M. Agar has written such a good book with excellent characters and a story with challenges that make this a page-turner. I highly recommend this book.
She took drama to the next level and it felt more vexing than interesting. After reading three quarters of it, I skipped to the last chapter because it became unbearable to read the same drama over and over. I know that that happens in real life (the same fight over again and the lack of communication), but she over did it for my taste.
Jack and Gwyn love childhood and Betrayal of his brother Henry. Them jack and gwyn back together. Your book is awesome. Cannot wait to read the other books of your.
