Oh rats, now I want to know more, not about the past but about the "future". Eve Brown is on the run, exhausted, without hope, broken hearted, without an idea of what to do next. She's on a dark, deserted highway and pulls into the empty parking lot of The Sleep Tight Motel. Kind, hunky, Drew is there to offer her a safe haven. It'd be so nice to just stay there longer but Eve needs to keep running.

Well this was creeptastic! This is a very, very atmospheric short story that was a nail biter for sure. This is just my type of read. I love these creepy road side motel stories.

A seedy, perhaps even haunted motel on the side of the road. With no other guest...I repeat NO other guest...ummmm run girl run! I would have been out of there before I even checked in. I loved this creepy motel story! Apparently I am on a roll with Lisa Unger stories this week. This is #3 and I want more.

Sign me up! I have found a new auto read author. This short story is on amazon and can be read in a half hour. I highly recommend it. I never saw this ending coming!

Enjoyable short story (from the Amazon "Dark Corners" series) about a girl (Eve Brown) with a fake ID, stolen money, and a gun who is on the run with an abusive ex following her and sending her threatening texts. She needs a break from driving for so long, so when she sees an isolated motel near the woods called The Sleep Tight Motel she stops for some rest. She is told by the owner that she is the only guest staying at the motel. So why, during her sleep, is she awakened by screams and noises from the next room?

This was a very fast and easy-to-read story (48 pages). The characters were interesting. I liked the atmosphere of the hotel with the fog rolling in from the woods. I also enjoyed the twist at the end, but by that point in the story I sort of saw it coming.

This was an entertaining read right in time for Halloween.

Ms Unger never disappoints. Even in this short story of only 48 pages Miss Unger still manages to ratchet up the tension.

Eve is a woman on the run from her abusive husband. Exhausted, she finally has to pull into a motel to get some sleep, or so she hopes. She finds the only motel around in this dead end spot. There are no other guests in this motel which would’ve sent me running the other way, but she doesn’t have a lot of options. The nice enough appearing motel employee eases her mind a little.

That is until she starts to hear screaming during the night. . . .

This was a great, creepy, atmospheric story from one of my favorite authors. It is part of the Dark Corners collection from Amazon.

The cover enticed me...

The narrator’s prose mesmerized me...

And, this short story about a woman finding refuge in a cozy, secluded hotel drew me in...

So atmospheric!

An enjoyable, one sitting “listen” or “read” from the DARK CORNERS collection-7 Amazon original short stories released in 2018.

I'm such a sucker for short stories, probably thanks to Stephen King, who is the master of the short story. And the long story. And everything in between.

Anyway...

Lisa Unger nailed this one. The Sleep Tight Motel has it all--a great plot, developed characters, a spooky atmosphere, and a zinger of a conclusion. That's really all that needs to be said.

Give this one a shot, won't you?

A creepy motel in the middle of nowhere with no other guests? SIGN ME UP! I love ‘creepy motel’ stories and the vibes they give me. This is an exceptional short story about a woman on the run who ends up staying at the Sleep Tight Motel. Nobody else is staying there, so why is she hearing odd noises and screams from the room next door in the middle of the night?

There’s a couple creepy moments that made me glad I read this during the day, outside by the pool. Lisa Unger sure knows how to tell a compelling story. The ending was a nice twist that I didn’t expect. All in all, a winner from Amazon’s Dark Corners Collection.

Lisa Unger’s THE SLEEP TIGHT MOTEL is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors. Each story can be read in a single sitting.

“Where are you. You’re not going to get away with this.”

Bright lights in her rear-view mirror. He is following her and sending her threatening texts. He can’t have found her. She didn’t want to be found.

Eve has a fake ID, a .38, and a violent lover receding in the rearview mirror.

Alone, driving on a dark highway…and then she sees The Sleep Tight Motel.

A woman on the run finds refuge in a motel at the edge of the woods, with plenty of vacancies.

Eve is so tired and scared of being on the run from her violent boyfriend, Erik. Eve and her boyfriend, Erik disappeared with a huge pile of money stolen from the nightclub where she worked. Erik killed her boss, Sandy who interrupted the robbery.

The kind manager of the motel, Drew tells her she is safe there, and is happy to ease her fears.

He’ll never find her at the isolated motel. But if Eve is the only guest, whom does she keep hearing on the other side of the wall? Eve won’t get a good night’s rest until she finds out.

Is Eve a victim or a willing accomplice?

“Halloween’s kind of a big deal around here.”

No kidding!

Excellent creepy short story. Pretty easy to cotton onto what's going on way before the reveal, but that in no way detracts from the enjoyment. Very well structured, wonderfully written with deft use of 1st person. Bonus points for it being nicely Pagan/spiritual in concept vs organised religion ideas. (That's Pagan with a big P, not a little p.)

Good night and may we all sleep tight, Brother Crow. 🐦‍⬛.

An eerie short story from the Amazon dark corners collection, about a consuming relationship and regret

Something isn't right at the sleep tight motel, but Eve Brown is on the run, and needs somewhere to stay. Eve is the only guest, so what are the bangs are screams coming from the room next door?!

This excellently written short story was so atmospheric and creepy! I read it in one go, in about half an hour, and couldn't stop turning the pages.

I loved reading about this sinister motel in the misty woods, but I definitely wouldn't have stopped there ha ha! I liked the chapters alternating between the motel, and the flashbacks from Eve's past.

For a short story, the characters were well developed, and I empathised a great deal with Eve. It just shows how things can escalate once you make a few bad choices! It was kind of heartbreaking... The plot was great, and I loved the twist at the end!

Whilst it was chilling, it wasn't scary like I though it would be! I already own Let Her Be and Confessions on the 7:45 by Lisa Unger and can't wait to read them now! I definitely recommend if you're looking for a dark, short story! T🌲🌲🌲🌲

With “Psycho” being one of my favorite movies ever, stories involving motels have always given me the creeps, so after reading some fantastic reviews from my goodreads friends I knew I had to read this short story.

The author perfectly conveyed a spooky atmosphere that had me biting my nails the whole time. A great plot with pretty well developed characters (that’s not always the case in short stories) and a conclusion I didn’t see coming and hurted a little bit. 😢

This was my first approach to Lisa Unger’s work and now I can’t wait to read some of her novels.

This is an adorable spooky short story in the Dark Corners Collection.

Eve is on the run in a shitty old car. She's got a bag full of money, a gun and a piece-of-shit ex on her tail. It's very much Psychoish in that way.

When Eve realizes she can't run anymore with what little bit of sleep she's had, she pulls into a motel with lots of vacancies. Through the night there are bumps and scrapes that convince Eve someone is staying in the room next door. But when she checks, it's empty.

And I'm sorry, but I'm such a cheap slut for creepy motel shit. Honestly, I will watch or read nearly anything that takes place in that eerie setting. It's just so obvious, ripe-for-the-picking atmosphere.

Even if the story is terrible, I'll probably still like it simply for the motel.

Drew, the motel owner is nice, but like too nice? He seems lonely and kindly adamant that Eve should really have breakfast with him. When she agrees to stay a little while longer the next morning, that's when the cop shows up, the texts get more threatening and every spooky little clue starts to fall into place.

If you want to read something a little creepy to get into the season, this is a short 40-something-page story and it for realsies packs a punch.

A Dark Corners short story from Amazon. Lots of creepy goodness packed into less than 50 pages! A woman running from an abusive ex and the police takes refuge in a roadside motel on a isolated stretch of highway. Even though Eve is the only guest, she keeps hearing weird and disturbing noises at night coming from the room next door. Is she brave enough to find out what's happening on the other side of the wall? Highly recommended to fans of spooky motel stories.

She has a fake ID, a bag full of money, and a gun and she's running just as fast as she can, as far as she can. Behind her is her ex-boyfriend who keeps texting her ... I'm right behind you.

Scared, and deadly tired, she happens upon a small motel. If she can just get a couple hours rest, she thinks. She feels pretty safe in thinking he'll never find her here.

According to the owner, the motel is empty ... so why does she keep hearing thumps and bumps in the next room? And a woman screaming?

This is a terrific short story just in time for Halloween by one of my favorite authors. She's packed a lot of story in just a few pages. Characters are well defined. You can feel the fear oozing off the pages.

Book Blurb -- Lisa Unger’s The Sleep Tight Motel is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this most interesting short story. Opinions are unbiased and entirely my own.

From the Dark Corners collection.
“Darkness is part of life. Death is part of life.”

Really enjoyed this. When Lisa Unger is on, she’s all the way up!

“Why celebrate death? We’re dead longer than alive….why not celebrate? Why not tell ourselves a story about what comes next?”

Energy can change form, but cannot be created or destroyed….managing to be scientific and spiritual all at once…..comforting.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Genre:
Horror + Short Story

This was not as enjoyable as the first book in the series. But for 48 pages it was still good. Sometimes I felt it was confusing a bit. I was not sure if the main character was imagining things or were happening to her. The Sleep Tight Motel is the motel to which the female protagonist goes to escaping from something/someone! Is she a reliable protagonist? Will you trust her as a reader? That you need to read yourself.

Finally, a good story in this series 🤩

I was about to find out what the plot twist was, but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked that twist. I'm really looking forward to reading the two remaining stories to see if they're as good as this one.

This is one of seven terrifying short stories in the Amazon Prime Dark Corners collection. This is the second short story I have read by Lisa Unger and now I want to read her full-length books. Even is running from a violent and controlling lover. She has good reason to believe he intends to kill her. She takes refuge in a vacant motel on the edge of the woods. She is surprised that the rooms are so well kept and clean. Surely her abusive lover will not find her there. However she gets threatening text messages on her phone indicating he is looking for her. Eve is running under an assumed name and carries a gun.

The next surprise is the kind and handsome motel proprietor who helps her hide her car and cooks delicious meals. He seems to understand she is in trouble, and perhaps more of what is causing her distress. Eve finds herself attracted to this man. She knows any attempt at a relationship with him would result in both of them being killed. Could he be a future boyfriend or is he her guardian angel? She knows she must flee the motel as her dangerous ex-lover is drawing near. What are the scary sounds coming from the next room at night? That room is vacant.

This is a good short story of psychological suspense with a horrifying, well constructed plot.

Eve is on the run when she checks into The Sleep Tight Motel. With no other guests, a "too good to be true" proprietor, and strange noises coming from the room next door, Eve doesn't know what to think. Very creepy and atmospheric, I was totally caught up in this unsettling short story from one of my favorite authors. Part of the Amazon "Dark Corners" collection.

4.5 Simply Suspenseful Stars rounded up to 5 Sleep Tight Stars by virtue of the well done lead-in and finale.

Received a "free trial" of Amazon Prime last week and immediately went to Books- 'read for free (I'm on a fixed income here) with kindle for web'. This is the first item that popped up. It is the second in a seven novella series, the Dark Corners Collection, that seems Horribly Fun! I started out with the audio version but switched to the 'kindle for web' version due to the aural assault pitched by the narrator's grating voice.

Having myself just returned from an 8 day roadtrip, the story's opening page hit home:

"I’ve been on the road awhile. How long? You know, I’m not even sure. Too long. The radio is off. I can’t stand the soulless pop music, the manic chatter, the static, not for one more minute."

Amen to that!
The pace is quick, the characters captivating, and the story choc full of suspense; I was spellbound to finish in one sitting.
A few goodreads members suggested reading it around Halloween. The story takes place around Halloween and a few freaky tricks/treats infuse the narrative with seasonal zest. Yet, this short story can be thoroughly enjoyed regardless of the season. I encourage any spooky story lover to embibe in the smart, spirited, gore-free, suspense.

A woman on the run checks in to the Sleep Tight Motel. It's not clear who she's running from, but the threatening texts she keeps receiving indicate an abusive ex – getting closer all the time – and she's so scared of being found that she doesn't even want her car to be visible from the road. At first, the quiet motel seems an ideal place to rest, with a charming owner and an unexpectedly comfortable bed. But then Eve is woken in the night by noise from the room next door... despite the fact that she's supposedly the only guest.

No surprise that Lisa Unger is best known for her psychological suspense novels. There is a great sense of tension here, and Eve's backstory is the highlight; her conflicted feelings about what she's left behind bring the character to life. I should probably have seen the ending coming, but I was so emotionally invested in Eve – so caught up in wanting her to escape – that I didn't think of it. A gripping story with a pleasing ghostly twist.

Lisa Unger never disappoints me! The Sleep Tight Motel is my favorite story in the Dark Corners Collection from Amazon/Audible. The Collection gathers seven dark, emotional tales from bestselling authors. The stories aren't really horror in the true sense, but more like dark looks into human nature and behavior. Most of the tales in the collection are dark and psychological, but not really scary. This story (and Oak Avenue by Brandi Reeds) is actually more typical horror mixed with cautionary tale. Loved it!

Eve is on the run. She has escaped her violent, criminal lover...but her ordeal has her on edge and exhausted. Her ex is following her....threatening her....coming after her. But she can't run anymore. She has to rest. Stopping at an isolated motel, Eve is scared but the friendly manager calms her, telling her she is safe. But he knows something Eve doesn't.

The Sleep Tight Motel is the second story in the Dark Corners Collection. I listened to the audio book version. The audio, narrated by Amy Landon, is just over 1.5 hours. Landon reads at a nice pace, building suspense.

All in all, a great story! I wasn't too surprised at the ending....but the suspense and creepy feel of the tale was entertaining.

Lisa Unger is the author of several books including The Red Hunter and Beautiful Lies.
