Waterborn #2

Storm Song

Rate this book
I have gills. I can breathe water. And that lightning storm that ruined my dad’s dinner party? That was me.

After a life-threatening incident involving sharks and lots of blood, and more than one out-of-control storm, I’m forced to take action.

There’s only one person who can help, Athen Kelley, the man who fathered me, a man whose power frightens and thrills me. I don’t know if I can trust him. He hurt my mother. But if I want to learn control, I have no choice. That doesn’t mean I have to like him. I know I’ll never forgive him.

If things weren’t complicated enough, an enigmatic stranger shows up, calling me by my mother’s name. He insists I claim my place in my new tribe or risk losing it altogether.

And then there’s Noah Jacobs, the ocean-eyed boy who answers my Song. The magic between us is undeniable. I feel its heat in the pearl I wear around my wrist. Noah vows to keep me safe. But when an unexpected adversary threatens his life and the lives of my family, it’s up to me to keep us all safe.

I recently finished Waterdreamer, the second installment of The Emerald Series, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The character development from the first book in the series, Waterborn, was amazing. I was able to envision these teenagers develop into young adults. The subject matter was definitely more mature in this book. From the sex scenes (yes, teens have sex) to the dialogue. The characters and plot lines were much more fleshed out this go around.

Ms. James was able to fill in some gaps and answer some questions for me that I was curious about from the first book. I don't want to spoil anything for future readers, but there are definitely some plot twists that I did not see coming. This book was interesting enough to keep me on the couch an entire day as I couldn't put it down!

I am anxiously awaiting book three in the series! Ms. James is a very talented, imaginative writer. Young and old alike can relate to the struggles of these characters. I look forward to spending time with them in the near future. Thanks for an awesome escape from everyday life!

I stayed up WAAAAAAYYYYY past my bedtime reading this last night because I absolutely COULD NOT put it down! It's a really strong sequel with tons of action, surprises, and totally swoon worthy romance.

It's also a bit more mature than the first book. I would definitely classify it as more NA than YA.

I'm not thrilled that the next book in the series switches main characters, but I can kind of see why it would, what with that little surprise at the end of this book. I'm not sure I'm gonna like it, but I'm going to give it a try anyway because I'm not quite ready to leave the world of the waterbreathers just yet.

Hmmm...

I feel like they still talk about Caris’ song as if it’s both still with her and lost. That’s troublesome. Additionally, I think her abilities are built upon somewhat to prep when she uses them, but not to the point that I think it makes sense in specific instances. The magic of the Deep feels more like a convenience than a thought out system that applies to the Waterborn community.

This book sucked me in in a way I haven't experienced in a while. I love the detail in her writing that so clearly communicates what the characters are experiencing in a lovely-but-approachable fashion. I'm starting the next one tonight and can't wait to see what happens next. You won't regret this purchase!

The series is getting better and better. I love how we are seeing more of Caris grow and become a strong waterbreather. This book was exceptional! I was on the edge of my seat!! I haven't loved a series like this in a while. And let's just say, Caris and Her father are very powerful! That one scene was amazing!

Just as good as the first

Rarely am I surprised by plot twists, but this book got me a couple times. I'm still thoroughly enjoying the characters and plan to dive into the next book with gusto!

Captivating!

This book kept me glued to it's pages! I couldn't wait to see what else was in store for not just Caris, but Noah, and the many other tribal members. Some moments were kinda eye opening, but eventually everything started to fall in place.

I devoured this book. Being a big fan of Waterborn, Waterdreamer delivered as well. Caris's story and character development continued in a way that made sense, a part of James' very realistic style of writing that I enjoy. I didn't even notice until I was about 80% through the book that there were no Noah POV chapters this time. This felt OK though, since Caris is the main focus. I did miss Noah a bit though

Caris goes through a ceremony called a 'Soulfast' in Waterdreamer, which is the waterbreather equivalent of being a debutante. It was really interesting to learn more about water breather culture, and see the world more fleshed out. I particularly enjoy how James writes the way breathers fit into human society, and the conflicts there. The drama was excellent, and I was riveted in places.

The only reason I haven't given Waterdreamer 5 stars is because of the last few pages, where a major surprise was revealed. For me, it seemed quite rushed, tacked onto the end to create an unnecessary cliffhanger. I wont give away any spoilers, but it also seemed quite unbelievable to me, and it broke my suspension of disbelief. James has said she will continue the story in the next book, and personally I think this major reveal should have been left til then. It would have been much more satisfying if Waterdreamer had just tied up Caris's story and left it there. There is a particularly beautiful scene where Caris is swimming with her tribe, and I just wish it had ended there.

Despite the ending, I thoroughly enjoyed Waterdreamer. Ms Jame's books are the only ones I have ever reviewed on Goodreads, and that's because I feel they are undiscovered gems. There are a few spelling and grammar mistakes (my favourite being when Noah becomes 'Nosh'), but nothing I couldn't look past. I thoroughly recommend both Waterdreamer and Waterborn.
