Emelle Gamble

Emelle Gamble was a writer at an early age, bursting with the requisite childhood stories of introspection which evolved into bad teen poetry and attempts at 'real literature' all copies of which she has since, very sensibly, shredded. She took her first stab at romantic fiction in an adult education writing class when her kids were in bed, taught by fellow writer Carolyn Haines, in Mobile, Alabama. As M.L. Gamble, she published several romantic suspense novels with Harlequin. She is now contracted with Soul Mate Publishing for Secret Sister, summer of 2013, and Dating Cary Grant, an early 2014 release.

Always intrigued by the words ‘what if’, Emelle’s books feature an ordinary woman confronted with an extraordinary situation. She most enjoys reading stories that surprise and amaze her, and hopes her readers will enjoy the challenging and exciting journeys her characters take.

Emelle lives in suburban Washington D.C. with her husband, Phil, her hero of thirty years, and two orange cats, Lucy and Bella. Her daughter, Olivia, and son, Allen, are happily launched on their own and contributing great things to society, which has always been their mother’s fondest wish.

When Murder Calls by Emelle Gamble is a cozy mystery that twists and turns and kept me guessing, my curiosity rising as the suspense builds. Who is the Grim Reaper?

Megan is a single parent with two small children and with a serial killer on the loose she is concerned for her children’s safety. Dead bodies are piling up around her and she should be more careful about who she trusts.

I think Jack is in for a surprise when he meets Megan. They are drawn together, but Jack is hiding something. She has freed herself from a bad marriage and does not want to go down that road again.

As if a serial killer and a questionable man in her life aren't enough, her ex husband and his fiance appearing on her doorstep and it's the last thing she needs. I can imagine how the anger threatened to overwhelm her, but she would not break down in front of her children. I love that Megan put them front and center.

Dean, the on again off again dad, suddenly appearing pissed me off more than the Grim Reaper. He thought he could drop in and play dad in complete disregard for Megan, not even giving her a heads up. I was super ticked and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself.

Mystery, murders, a single woman with two small children struggling to finish school and create a better life for her and her kids, a hot looking man wanting to share that life, what more could we want in a cozy?

A serial killer is on the loose from the opening pages. I love serial killers. Several suspects pop up early, but I keep thinking they are too obvious. The suspense was slow boiling, but Emelle kept me guessing and the pacing picked up as I neared the end.

When Murder Calls by Emelle Gamble is one of those of books where I would think it’s over, then something else would happen, then I would think it’s over, then something else would happen…The action and suspense continued into the last pages. I would have liked to have more of an ending, but I know all I need to know and I am good with that.

When Murder Calls is a very suspenseful book introducing us to Megan who works for a company who does TV rating statistics while finishing her masters degree in communications. She hires Jack who keeps who he really is and why he wants the job a secret. A serial killer called the Grim Reaper is on the loose and kills Megan's boss, Gladys, among others. As the murders keep piling up, things get pretty tense for everyone. But, in the mean time, Megan and Jack start having feelings for each other.

I had no idea who the Grim Reaper was until the end. But throughout the story there are so many implications of who it was that I started to suspect everybody!

There were lots of twists and turns to this story which kept it interesting. The author kept some of the characters quite mysterious which is important because the bad guy had to be kept a secret but there was a character near the beginning of the book that I didn't understand if he was a good guy or not. Generally, there were too many questions about that character and what his roll REALLY was. I was also surprised at the lack of editing considering it was published by Harlequin.

I've read other books by Emelle Gamble and loved them so I expected to really like When Murder Calls too. But sadly, I found it lacking. Please remember that this is just my opinion of the book and I'm sure others enjoyed it much more than I did.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I want to tell you how it ends because it is so strange but that would totally spoil it for you.

“When Murder Calls” has lots of well crafted twists and turns, and doesn’t have an ending easily figured.
I’m usually pretty good at figuring out the bad guy by the end of the story. I got part of it, especially the part divulged when clues connecting Elaine and the main character’s boss/land lady — although Emmelle Gamble introduces quite a few red herrings.
I suspected the identity of the Grim Reaper but wasn’t sure, especially after continued attacks in Megan’s neighborhood. I can’t say I ever suspected the motive though. While I may be good at sorting convoluted clues and multiple cases, not quite up on bats in the belfrey.
“When Murder Calls” leaves the reader wanting more while resolving the main plot conflict.
At the last page, I couldn’t help thinking That’s it? the end?
I would have liked a glimpse of mother and children reunited after such an ordeal, especially the rescued Thomas, worried Roxie, even poor Mona who witnessed far too much. I would have liked to have seen resolution between Mona, her brusque father and neighbors, esp. with the notoriety her role in relation to multiple police cases.
And, did the lead officer get fired or not? Did his role coordinating Thomas’ search command post from Megan’s home count in his favor?
Did the creeptastic professor/news nut continue/win his suit against pd?
Will we ever meet/see Reva, future wife of the ex?
What about Jack’s other kid and ex? Can he really fig his nature and back off news, especially high profile cases or put a hunch on the back burner in favor of family now? Sure, he’s great in a crisis if he’s part of the action, but how will he do in the day to day? He couldn’t with his first family, and in several instances with Megan has already put the thrill of the job first.
This digital release of a 1991Harlequin Intrigue (by ML Gamble) is well crafted.

Megan Summers is a single mom who is trying to finish her masters degree in communications while working at a company that does tv ratings statistics. Megan was told by her boss, Gladys Grokowbowski to hire Jack Gallagher to replace one of the employees they had just let go. Jack does not tell Megan the entire truth about himself in the interview and has his own agenda. Megan takes on an internship a local television station where she starts putting some pieces of the puzzle together. . She and Jack are attracted to each other but Megan is reluctant to trust him especially with a serial killer, called the Grim Reaper on the loose. Her boss, Gladys, who is also her landlady becomes one of the victims and it is about the time Jack has come into Megan's life. A great story that has some twists and turns along the way

Megan and Jake have an adventure trying to solve several things at once. While coping with life we fine our couple in danger at just about every turn.
First with jobs, then with murder, kidnappings, and a lost child. When Megan's landlord/boss gets murdered a list of happenstance occurs to put Megan and Jake together. Fighting feelings that are just budding. When lies start to unravel and people start misleading others it comes down to the two of them along with the police detective to solve the cases that seam to be interwoven. This was a very exciting twisty turny weave of a story that will keep you enthralled until the end. Happy reading..

Who is the serial killer? That's the question everyone in Melbourne is asking. This story is woven around Megan,a single mother, trying to get back on her feet after her divorce. Her stressful enough life is about to get even worse as people she works with are murdered, accused of murder, her ex turns up out of the blue and then there's Jake. Jake seems interested but is he just after a fling or is really prepared to take on a ready made family.
There are clues through the book as to who the murderer actually is but the twists are well done and kept me reading well into the night.

Megan Summers is a single mom just wanting to move forward with her 2 children, but a killer named The Grim Reaper is making that difficult to do. And then there is Jake Gallagher, who is a new employee now causing other emotions in Megan that she was not ready for. They are working together to find the out who is the killer and as they do, their closeness grows.

It kept my interest from beginning to end. This was my first book by Emelle Gamble and I look forward to her others. I received this copy in exchange for an honest review.

Another exciting romantic suspense from this author! This one had more twists and surprises and more heart-pounding suspense than the previous ones I read and I finished it in two late-night readings because I couldn’t even make a good guess as to “whodunit” until the very end! The exciting (and sometimes scary) adventures that Megan and Jack had in this story about TV reporting and ratings, survey competition, murder and mayhem, has made Ms. Gamble one of my go-to authors when I want some excitement in my reading life.

Emelle Gamble grabs you by the throat with the strength only a wonderful mystery writer can. The suspense builds even to the end before it hits you full force. The minute I started reading"When Murder Calls" I didn't want to put it down. By Chapter 5 there was a long list of suspects and you have to keep going to see what will happen next. The suspense builds with every chapter. A real page turner as some would say. Makes you want to scream,"Who done it?" What a surprise you get at the end. Well worth the read if you like mystery. Five stars on this one.

I really enjoyed this book! It is set in 1991 and it was fun to go back to that time! Megan and Jake have a wild ride throughout the entire story. A killer is on the loose and suddenly Jake steps into the picture so you are not sure what to expect. This book was a total page turner and I stayed up late one night to finish it, the next day I had a book hangover! It kept me guessing to the very end of the story! I will be reading a lot more of this author in the future.

This was quite a roller-coaster ride, once it got going. So many murders going on in Melbourne. And Megan seems to find herself in the middle of it all. The author kept giving us all sorts of leads to the killer's identity ... and all sorts of bad things were being done by lots of the characters in the book. So much happening - and all in the 1990s, when you didn't have cell phones and easy computer access. It really makes you think how far we've come in such a relatively short space of years. Very interesting.

This was one exciting, jam packed book. There is suspense, mystery, self-doubt, murder, secrets, sexual attraction and love. It is well written with intense characters and a story line that is almost impossible to put down. You will keep guessing until the very end! Well worth reading!

I liked the mystery and the characters. Plot was well written and kept me guessing. However, I did not feel the chemistry between Jack & Megan.
