Part-djinn and mostly reformed thief Gavyn Donatti has learned a thing or two about magic in the years since he met Ian, his shape-shifting genie ancestor who enjoys slaughtering his enemies and definitely not being called a genie, if you value your life. Their unlikely partnership has even saved humanity a few times. Not that they're counting.
But their latest challenge is a whole new world from anything they've faced before.
When Donatti and Ian receive a message from a long-lost djinn clan asking for help, they head to the remote mountains of Alaska and a mysterious, never-ending storm. There, they discover two lost clans who've been feuding for centuries, imprisoned inside the storm -- but the clans aren't alone. An ancient monster is terrorizing the population, enjoying its own captive, all-you-can-eat djinn buffet.
Thrust into the conflict without any warning, Donatti and Ian are just as trapped as the rival clans. Now they have to find a way to stop the djinn-fighting, force the Annukhai and the Alqani to work together, and destroy a mythical, immortal creature that isn't supposed to exist ... before they become the monster's next meal.
MASTER OF ELEMENTS is book three in the Gavyn Donatti series, following MASTER OF NONE and MASTER AND APPRENTICE.
Gavyn Donatti is BACK!! Yes, ex-master thief Donatti and his shape-shifting djinn ancestor, Ian, returned in Master of Elements to help a long-lost djinn clan that have been terrorized by a horrible monster. So Gavyn and Ian traveled to Alaska, discovers there's more to the long-lost clans, and must fight for the continuance of their lives as well.
Hot damn!! I never thought that I would be able to get my hand of a NEW Gavyn Donatti book!! It has been SEVEN years since I read book #2 Master and Apprentice. I found out that the publisher didn't continue the contract for the series. But then the author decides to go with self-publishing route, after probably getting the rights for these characters back. AND NOW THERE'S A NEW BOOK!
Right from the get go, I was enchanted with the story, like the years apart didn't matter. Sure, my bad memory might not remember all the details (I have to look-up in the second book who Lark and Tony are *laugh*) but I found that it didn't bother me at all in case of enjoying the story.
Bateman skillfully made me invested in Gavyn and Ian again, as well as the long-lost djinn clan, who only consists of kids and teenagers!! I LOVED everything about this book, from the first chapter until the very end, which made me all sniffly because
Those reasons above made this book one of my most entertaining reads of the year. So yeah, I'm 5-starring this book without a doubt!
3.5 stars because of the sexism and far fetched plot but rounded up because I enjoyed it and read it in one sitting.
Dusters are for dusting (and not sleeveless).
I loved the first two books so I was so excited to read this one. It’s been so long, though, that I’m a little confused about the people and their skills. I think two are a gay couple which is awesome but I’m not positive. They are only in one scene. I like that it’s a male MC who has a kid. That’s not very common.
I didn’t remember how sexist it was though. The women don’t have the level of power the men do and have to stay back. Their child is a boy who will inherit his father’s power. The only woman with a lot of power is evil.
After the first couple of scenes, this felt much more like epic fantasy than modern fantasy. I liked it fine but it’s not my thing. What saved it was the very American banter.
I really have trouble with the plot. I don’t understand how the people could do what they did and kept doing. Why wouldn’t they depose the evil leader even after they knew what that person was doing.
Wow, I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end, and man did I miss this series. The Gavyn Donatti books are great, and this one did not let me down. I don't know if it's the final book or not (hopefully not) but if it is I could live with it. Sonya Bateman wrote the hell out of this book. Plus, it's SO FUNNY. In terms of could a person read this without the prior books...mmmm....I wouldn't. You'd do yourself a disservice. Anyway if you're a Sonya Bateman fan- make a move and buy this. She kills it. I spent most of this story smiling to myself if not laughing outright.
After the last book I wasn't really expecting another one in this series. Imagine my delight, when Master of Elements popped up in my suggestions. I started reading and was instantly thrown back into the world of Donatti, Ian and their family and friends. It's been quite some time, since the earlier books were released. If you enjoyed them, you'll love this and should definitely read it. Their new adventure is really worth it. Awesome of Sonya Bateman to go the self-publishing route with this book!
I really wanted to like this book. But, along with everyone SMIRKING, the author's favorite over used word, the plot was thin. No buildup to action. Just, let's go through a mirror and save this universe. In addition, the bad guy suddenly becomes a good guy with no repercussions. Too many words. As if the word count would result in an award. I won't be reading any more of this universe, free or not.
These characters have delighted me since I first read Master of None and they continue to grow, develop, and entertain! This installment in the series was gripping! The writing is masterful, the action is suspenseful, and the unfolding relationship and ever-deepening bond between the family of characters are beautiful to behold!
Great thanks to Sonya Bateman for the third Gavyn Donatti book! Lost djinn clans, polar bears, and new reveals about Ian's past make this a great read.
Really good to visit with the gang. Fun book, quick read, nice ending. It was good to see Ian visit with his own people and get some much needed closure.
