Carmen lives in the south of England with her beloved tea maker and a stuffed sheep called Fergus. An avid reader since childhood, she caught the writing bug when her Nana asked her to write a story.
Nieve, an Elonian, is the king’s champion and tasked to bring the chosen one of prophecy from the kindred world to their side. First she will have to convince her that magic, Elonia, and the prophecy are indeed true. Then she will have to persuade her of the fact that the other side, the Shades, also want her for their own reasons. Before the arrival of the prophecy, there was nothing to her life beyond her duty to king and world. That is, until she meets the one who will make her question that life and her allegiances. Lea, a scientist, finds it hard to believe that she is the one spoken of in prophecy; much less that magic is in fact real. Before she is presented with the facts and brought to Elonia, she denies what all Nieve tries to convince her of. Once there, her training in combat, weapons, and the magic of Elonia begin. There she meets the king who further persuades her of her role in prophecy and who also incites a strong attraction between them. But they are, literally, from different worlds despite her true origins and role. Two worlds formed by the gods with a divide between them and earth. One world, which has the powers of light and air, wants to preserve it, the other side, with powers of dark and earth, wants the divide to fall. A chosen one is foretold who will save the divide, but she must be found on earth first. The prophecy speaks of saving the barrier between worlds, but is that the only danger that may be coming. New allies, betrayals, unforeseen parents, and the threat of a new past and future written are just a few of the things un-foretold. The story is reminiscent of other books in the genre, though unexpected snags on the way toward what the prophecy stated added some unique elements. I liked those snags, seeing that the “one thing” the prophecy foretold was not the ultimate goal of the story was interesting. A lot of the descriptions and details for combat, magic, and characters were good, but I got the feeling that I might be missing something with the story itself. All in all it is a decent start to a new series, but I doubt that I would get invested into its sequel.
Lea is smart and clever, but naive in many ways. She has no idea where she really came from. She has no idea what's in store for her, or where destiny might lead her. Battle-hardened Nieve is the royal champion of Elonia. She has dedicated her life to protecting the king, but she's ready for a life of her own. Her final assignment is to find Lea and bring her back to Elonia. Easy, right? Not so much. It seems danger has already discovered Lea.
I loved this book! It's a great urban fantasy story with flawless world-building and unforgettable characters. The story is told from dual first person points of view. Nieve and Lea alternate chapters, so we hear the story from two completely different perspectives and it really works well for this book. Lea is such a fun character. At the beginning of the book, we discover she's a scientist and extremely intelligent, but she still comes across as a little naive and unworldly. She's clever with words and can be a smart ass, but not in a snotty way. This is a girl who is completely unequipped to handle what is in store for her. Nieve is the opposite of Lea in many ways. She's a competent fighter and confident in her position as royal champion. She's tough, but we're gradually introduced to her vulnerabilities and fears. I always harp on character development in my reviews, and this story is a prime example of character development done right. Circumstances force both main characters to undergo serious changes, but these characters also exercise free will and make choices that show true character development. Yes, they are pushed and pulled by external forces, but they continue to wrestle for control of their own destinies. When everything falls apart, we see the true strengths and weaknesses of each character in this story, and it's quite surprising.
If you're looking for an action-packed read with multifaceted, courageous characters and a little bit of romance, this is the book for you. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to get my hands on the next installment in the series.
WOW…This was one hell of a debut book for Carmen Fox. If you are a lover of Urban Fantasy……hell……even if you have never read one before you MUST pick up a copy of Divide and Conquer.
I read the first line of the synopsis and I was hooked…” Two women. One prophecy. Zero places to hide.” How can that not get your attention?
The 2 women – Nieve & Lea…..You will love and adore them as much as I do. Nieve is the serious out of the two and Lea is one kickass spitfire who I want to be when I grow up. I am not one for spoilers, but will tell you that this books has it all secrets, some romance, betrayal and some strong heroines who make you laugh as well as hope you never come across them.
Carmen Fox’s writing is astonishing. The back story is brilliant, the characters are well developed. I love the dual POVs as you get a chance to see what Nieve and Lea are thinking/feeling during each chapter. You will fall in love with each and every character you meet. And let’s not forget the bad guys… they are well bad, but that’s what we want right? As you read the book you become completely spell bound by the vivid descriptions of what is going on. You will feel like you are a part of an action pack movie. Fox seriously knows how to write some action packed, kick ass fight scenes.
I am extremely excited to see what else Ms. Fox has under her sleeve for upcoming books. She will forever be a #1CLICK for me and has completely turned me onto a new world of Urban Fantasy.
Lea thought she was destined for something greater than being a translator when she arrived in Seattle. She was supposed to be making waves as a scientist. It turns out she is destined for much more. Nieve is a warrior and the Royal Champion. She and another female are supposed to fulfill a prophecy that will save the Elonian world. Her only problem is convincing Lea she is the chosen one.
Lea is an extremely intelligent young woman, but she seems to lack confidence in herself. She certainly doesn't believe she is warrior material. Nieve is a warrior; she has no time for relationships. Her biggest fear seems to be emotional attachment. The two women begin to forge a friendship and a bond, and through this you can see both of their characters grow.
Carmen Fox has penned a very interesting debut novel. Two worlds hang in the balance, Elonia and the human world are threatened by the Shades should the divide between the realms fall. This Urban fantasy has plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat!

When I finished this book, I remember thinking, “oh, why did it have to end?”. As you can see, I grew attached to the story and characters, especially Lea and Nieve.
While Lea is the character most people will like from the start, because she's a funny and relatable; Nieve is the badass girl who’ll steal your heart. And she had help doing that, too. When Nieve met Kieran, she quickly became my favorite… OMG! I ship them. HARD. I ship them all the freaking time.
But this book is much more than just awesome characters and great romance. Carmen is a skilled writer. She knows what she’s doing, and she'll guide you down a road that is fun and worthwhile.
If you’re big on urban fantasy, amazing leading ladies and romance (great, HOT romance), like me, you should definitely read Carmen Fox’s debut.
What do you get if you take a hot blonde, a logic-driven female scientist, a ton of tight-fitting leather and the fall of the divide between our world and the worlds of two peoples who have the power of magic? You get a good holiday read, some witty one liners and a sprinkling of scenes raunchy enough to live up to all that skin-tight leather that the magical folks seem to like to cover themselves in from top to toe. If you like urban fantasy, you should take note of the name of this author. She's going to be big.
Divide and Conquer is an action-packed urban fantasy filled with twists and turns and great characters, including a cigar smoking gargoyle who loves his hooch. The writing is polished and the character development is spot on. If I hadn't known better, I would have thought Ms. Fox already had several books out. The writing is that good. She is definitely one to watch! For my full review on Divide and Conquer, visit https://juliemlavoie.wordpress.com/20...
I loved this book and can't wait for the next book in the series. It was action packed, suspenseful, and funny at times. It was a great read that played perfectly in my mind. The author did an excellent job with the details and descriptions of the characters. It brought it to life in a way that was mind blowing. Carmen Fox did an excellent job and I was glad for the chance to this work.
This book was really captivating. I was hooked and could not put it down. I can't wait to see what come next for this great group of characters. They were al written really well and you didn't know what was going to come up next. I enjoyed the little quotes at the beginning of each chapter. It was really nice to see the lady's of the books be the heroes with the help of the men and not the other way around.
I saw on Goodreads after reading Divide & Conquer that this is referenced as paranormal romance and I think that is 100% misleading. Yes, the two main characters do sort of pair off romantically with partners (at the very end!), but there is no romantic scenes, basically no shared affection (one sex scene that is alluded to but does not occur on the pages, mind you) until like 60% through the book. Do not go into the story expecting some swoony romance because you might be let down (this was way more a bromance (sistermance?) between the two main characters than any sort of romantic relationship). This is no way a romance, but most certainly an Urban Fantasy full of battles, action, war training, espionage and court intrigue- oh and magic!
The book was dual narrator by bad-ass, jaded warrior Nieve and nerdy, completely unprepared, quirky Lea. The two could not have been more opposite of characters but it was fun watching the dynamic between them evolve as the book progressed. I loved the banter from Lea and her determination (after she stopped trying to escape). There were a lot of side characters that popped in and out of the story, with just a hint of personality that I would love to learn more about (yep, I am talking about you Markus the perv!) in a future story. This is the first in what is listed as a series so I am intrigued to see what will come next for the characters as well as the Elonian world.
I will admit that I had the hardest time getting into this book. I can't put my finger on the why of it exactly, but for some reason I just could not connect or stay focused- maybe it was me, maybe the super slow plot, maybe the fact I did not really feel like I knew the characters... And then finally, at like 50%, it just clicked and I became invested in the characters and the very cool, unique world the author was slowly developing. Luckily for this book I never quit, but if I was a normal reader I would have stopped before I was engaged. So I suggest to power through and hope that this is a read for you.
This story is perfect for those who liked the urban fantasy/secret world aspect of Shadow Play by Jill Ramsower or magic and danger of The Spell Weaver Series by Annette Marie
Hide and Conquer By Carmen Fox Hide and Conquer is book 1 in a new Urban Fantasy that Carmen Fox has created, and I must admit I was drawn into this World of mystery with Lea, Nieve and their assortment of allies immediately. Having alway’s been a huge reader of Fantasy the variation of urban fantasy was a pleasant experience especially when you often found fantasy lacked that punch it needed. Carmen Fox is an Author who knows exactly how to draw her reader’s into the world she has created, with an intriguing mystery plenty of drama and a world full of magic, gargoyles, and character’s that are tantilizing individuals who automatically blend themselves into becoming close to you in ways where their outcome becomes a priority within the book, you cannot help but become involved with the Author’s development of the plot, finding yourself laughing and crying with the depth and emotions this story entails. The book cover’s everything from action, drama, descriptive imagery and sneaky twists and turn’s you never expect, no sooner did I think I had some idea of where the Author was taking the storyline Ms Fox through another adventurous piece of the plot in to keep you intrigued while slipping in the next slice of drama into this amazing storyline. You are taken into three different dimensions so keeping up with the fast paced action with where the plot is actually going keeps you glued to the pages, you’re never let down with the number of surprises and variations that are cleaverly developed and woven into a plot that could go in a number of directions, Ms Fox has been tenacious with her development of this awesome storyline. This really is not a book you CAN PASS BY it has so much for you to invest in its a book you are going to want to read more than once. Divide and Conquer is definitely one of the best Urban Fantasy Novels I have read in a long time and I highly recommend you take the time to enjoy the assortment of events, character’s and never ending intrigue Ms Fox has beautifully knitted together to create a world where you want to read the next book immediately.
Nieve and Lea are the only hope for Elonia and one of them has never even heard of the place. Lea is just starting to feel as though she has her life together when Nieve shows up battling men in leather to protect her and explain the project that the two of them together will save not only Elonia but the entire world.
As the Royal Champion and sister too the king, Tristan, Nieve must get Lea on board and train her for the battle she's been preparing her entire life for. Waiting for something more in her life, Lea was just hoping for a job opportunity of a friend, instead she found herself in a new world surrounded by friends and allies, and maybe a sculpted body or two.
This book was a tad confusing in the beginning, but quickly the worlds and situation were explained and the story took off. Fox's storytelling draws the reader in to her world of light versus dark. I enjoyed Lea's character as a physicist who questioned the possibility of magic and used her education to find rationales for it. Action. Romance. And a whole lot of self discovery.

Remarkable job Carmen, thanks for sharing this little treasure with us.
Our heroines couldn't be much further apart, yet they need to learn to trust and work together. That might start by believing in the paranormal...
This is the start of a new urban fantasy series mixing up a smart scientist from the "real" world and an experienced veteran from the fantasy world. The story is well written and easy to read with well developed characters and setting. I found some of the characters to be a little rough around the edges, but perhaps that is just part of it being a first in the series. The setting, on the other hand, feels solid and real and I want to learn more. Overall, the story was fast paced and enjoyable and I look forward to exploring the world more in future books.
Recommended.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout for review purposes
Divide and Conquer is my first read by Carmen Fox. It is a well-written story with unforgettable characters. We have two very different main characters and the story unfolds alternating between their points of view. There is lots of magic, action (some battles), twists/turns, a little romance and some humor thrown in. I found Divide and Conquer to be an interesting read that held my attention from the first chapter until the end. I will be following Ms. Fox's writing. If you are looking for a unique well-written story with a snarky kick a$$ warrior heroine and a smart female scientist, then this book is for you and I highly recommend it. Received a copy from Hidden Gems and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Lea is a very smart woman, she studied physics, and she is suddenly confronted with the knowledge that magic is very real. Nieve is the Elonian king's champion, and she is sent into the human city of Seattle to find Lea, who is supposed to keep the barrier between realms from falling. Wow! Complex, humorous, and well written characters. Unique plot with lots of magic, some exciting battles, a jealous deity willing to, possibly, destroy three worlds, and a little bit of romance. I think this is a must read, fantastic book. I loved it!
I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.
Elonian warrior Nieve isn’t thrilled about being asked to mentor a prophesied ‘chosen one’ who can’t tell a sword from a hairbrush. Yet the king’s command is absolute, and time’s running short.
Unfortunately, physicist Lea, the reluctant ‘chosen,’ doesn’t believe in fixed fates or wacky wizardry, and Nieve’s warnings about the shadows fall on deaf ears.
An unprovoked attack at night finally convinces Lea that Nieve’s not some raving lunatic. Soon, she throws herself into this new reality that hails her as a hero. A reality in which she can become invisible, light up like a torch, and fly with the birds.
But as the saying goes, all is fun and games until one of them dies...
I thought the villain had an excellent point about magic, even though the villain was evil and a monster. The heroines were good but the hero’s were mediocre at best.
Tristan doesn’t deserve anything let alone to be king - spoiled brat comes to mind.
Overall I will read the next book. Liked all the parts with the heroines, disliked the other parts. All in all a mixed bag.
Overall I enjoyed this story. I liked the characters and the world that the story is set in. I would have liked a tad more world building and tons more suspense. The pacing was steady, there really wasn't any "hold my breath" or "read quick because I just have to know what happens next" moments in this book. It was a solid good start of series and I am interested to see where the next book takes the story
This is a fun, action packed story with the women as heroes go girl power, Nieve who’s a Elonian Warrior and Lea who’s a physicist living in the human world. Nieve warns Lea about the danger coming but Lea ignores her and doesn’t believe her until one night she is attacked then Lea throws herself into training and it’s Nieve who has to train her. This is a fantastic start to a new series and I can’t wait to read the next book and I highly recommend this book.
Snarky meets Smart as the fate of two worlds balances on a poorly-understood prophecy. Lots of heavy-duty magical action, battles, misunderstanding, and science mix it up when an Elorian Royal Champion Warrior portals into Seattle to recover a Caltech graduate who really belongs in Eloria.
Llaph Reviewer for Coffee Time Romance & More
