Having started reading this when it first started getting translated, I dropped it after a while because my patience in waiting for things is very low. Few weeks back I finally managed to finish it. Although the same feelings I had when I first began the novel were far gone I still managed to finish and even enjoy the novel. True to its genre the book was rather captivating. There were many aspects in the story that made me question the morality and then remembered this is a historic novel and that the degree of justice was slightly warped at that time and the powerful could more or less do what they wanted. In the aspect of mixing romance and the intrigues of the palace the author had done a fantastic job and it manages to capture the readers attention very fast. If I read the book in one go I most probably would have given the novel a higher rating than this.
*Edit - 2020.07.22
After rereading, I have to stay my stance in regards to this book has not changed. This is a good book if you can turn a blind eye against some factors such as the age gap between the leads but if you are looking for a book filled with political fights and palace schemes, this may not be it. It is with few schemes but compared to books such Nirvana in Fire and Eight Treasure Trousseau, the scheming in this is not tight roped as the former. This book is mainly focusing on the romance aspect between the leads. Unlike the latter I've mentioned, here we have a clear look at the end from the beginning. The author does not hide the fact that our lead is going to end up being the emperor. Thus we can go into the novel knowing it is a happy ending. Also as the book contains mature content, so please be warned.
Unfortunately the author's other works have been criticized compared to this but I would like to recommend this for those die-hard fans of Chinese web-novels.
You have to delete your common sense when starting this book. I enjoyed reading about the Chinese culture, but a lot of the stuff that happens here doesn't make sense - example: 6yr old FL who thinks, acts, and sound like a middle aged woman. She hates this and that sibling because - blank. But these reasons also dont make sense. Example: she hates her half brother, because he was a drunk, womanizer in their past life. But she died when she was 16 yrs old, and her brother is 6 yrs younger, so how was he a drunk womanizer when he was only 10 yrs old when she died? See, makes no sense! If you can ignore the plot holes and the age gap, it was a decent story.
safety SPOILERS - Safe (both virgins) - age gap (9 yrs)
- Book tries to be historically accurate, it might offend some readers. Girls marry when they're 13-15yrs (think middle ages). I didn't care, because I knew going in that most Chinese historicals will be historically accurate. Also, even though the H met the h when she was only 6 yrs old, he only thought of her as a child until she was 13. And he put a guard on her for her protection - not to stalk her for sexual reasons like some reviewer said - because her family members kept trying to kill her (one tried to sell her off, another tried to poison her).
dnf @ 25% Although the story had flaws, I still read till ch 42 but I don't think I can continue because no way I would have interest in romance blooming between 11y and 22y old. When she was younger, I didn't find their interactions weird. In short, the story had potential but the author didn't do it justice.
My third attempt to read this novel because I need to be done with it. Lol.
Wei Luo was sold off by her stepmother at the age of 6. But, something went wrong and she was later adopted by a couple in the country-side to be raise as a ghost bride. She managed to escape from that fate but, unfortunately met her end before she found her true family. But, before her death she managed to know that her stepsister was betrothed to her former fiance. When Wei Luo was reborn back to the age of 6, she vowed to get revenge.
The main villain in the book was of course her stepmother. But, somehow the hatred in Wei Luo's heart was so deep that she was even against her stepsister who was almost 5 at that time, her fiance and her yet to be born stepbrother. In her heart, the only person that matter was her twin brother who happened to be a sister-con.
At first, I was happy with the face-slapping. But, after a while, I just wanted to slap Wei Luo myself. She was so badly written that she came out as annoying and spoiled. To make matter worst, the male lead was not even better. One annoying female lead and one annoying male lead made my world go dark. But, the novel was famous. And so, I have to read it just to get it done with.
1. Abused girl is reborn into her 6-year old body, immediately before her stepmom sells her into slavery. She then plots to thwart the stepmom's plans and takes bloody revenge on the people who wronged her. She meets an prince who immediately gets interested in her. There are politics and plots.
2. I'm honestly a little glad to realize I've run out of steam re: rebirth/revenge stories? I've reached a point where the plot alone is not enough to keep me interested. This gives me hope about getting more control of my id.
3. Anyway, this was just- really unspectacular. The best part about it is the title. All the events just drag along in an uninteresting train of plots from really dumb antagonists that are easily countered by the protagonists. It's also really slow-paced, and that does not help.
4. The protagonists meet when the FL is 6 and the ML is 15, and it's a little eyebrow-raising even with how the FL is effectively older than the ML at that point. Even if there are no immediate romantic feelings involved. Maybe it's just my dissatisfaction with the rest of the story making me view this in a negative light.
5. Some of the bits I read are also- how do we put it, needlessly cruel? This is a very protagonist-centric morality kinda story. Not something where the protagonist knows they are being cruel and fully embraces it like The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage, but where the narrative treats all forms of cruelty in a very matter of fact manner. Again, this is very definitely informed by me being too bored when reading the book. Which in turn made me pay too much attention to things which I found even slightly interesting.
I love this genre where the MC suffers from some grievances in her past life and gets reborn to an earlier age to live her life better and get revenge on those who wronged her. However, this book fell flat for me for a number of reasons. More on that later in the spoiler section. Just know that there are some triggering things that happen and the ML is a creep.
Chongfei Manual follows our MC, Wei Luo. In her previous life, she was secretly sold by her stepmother as a little girl and didn't live a good life afterwards. At the age of 16, she finally made her way back to the city, but before she could get in touch with her family, she died and was reborn back to her 6 year old self. In order to save herself from the same fate, she attracts the attention of a random stranger nearby who looks strong at martial arts, and thus begins the start of her relationship with the ML, Zhao Jie.
The story itself isn't quite what I was expecting. Rather than reading about the MC scheming to have a better life for herself and to take revenge, it was more of a slice of life story detailing her day to day activities with some elements of revenge and barely any intrigue. Also, as much as I love a good revenge story, the revenge came about too easily and was much too harsh on some characters. The age gap of 9 years was hard to get over, especially when the ML says some creepy stuff and engages in non-PG behavior with the MC who just got her period. That part felt gross to read and I'm glad it didn't last for long.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
I didn't particularly care for Wei Luo or Zhao Jie. WL felt like she was stuck in her opinions from her previous life and wasn't that openminded about the characters in this new one, even if they've changed. One example is her youngest half-brother Changmi, who absolutely adores her, but she only tolerates him because she can't stand his mother / her stepmother. Another example is the MC's childhood fiance, Song Hui. She can't forgive him because he ended up marrying her half-sister Wei Zheng in her previous life, but she doesn't know what kind of circumstances led to that and is dead set against marrying him, even though it's clear he cares a great deal about her. I also got tired of the author's constant descriptions of her as the prettiest girl around. It was too much.
Zhao Jie is just a creepy pedo stalker imo. He gets jealous of anyone who so much as glances at the MC, even her own twin brother and their son when she spends time with him after giving birth. Sensitive much?? Also, the author keeps mentioning how it's hard for him to restrain himself around the MC when she's only 13 years old. Gross. Like this:
Sure enough, she was guilelessly obedient. Her arms went around his neck and she hugged him without resisting.
This alluring body was in his embrace. Her cheek was next to his neck. Warmth was suddenly scattered on his skin. It was as if countless bugs were crawling on him, climbed into his heart, and slowly bitten away all of his rationality. Zhao Jie closed his eyes. His palm was placed on her lower back, near her waist. He restrained himself and didn't go any lower.
The grooming vibes are real:
Should he watch over her more carefully in the future? She could only belong to him. He had watched her slowly grow up as if she was a delicate flower that he had personally nurtured, watered, and fertilized. He had finally waited until his flower had blossomed today. He was the only one that could pluck this flower. No one else could touch her.
Enough about the ML. Clearly he's a creeper. I didn't care for most of the other side characters as well. There are a lot of them, and it was honestly such a struggle to keep track of who was who initially. I read a lot of Chinese novels and am used to reading a lot of Chinese names, but even for me it was hard to keep track here. Also, there are two side couples, and while I'm glad both of WL's friends ended up with the guy they liked, the author spent more time on their relationship than I liked.
The part about the MC's missing mom was handled weirdly. The author kept mentioning it, so I thought it would be a big deal when we finally learned the truth about her disappearance. However, the reason she left was so stupid and due to a huge misunderstanding which could've been easily solved by talking things out. The MC's attitude towards not recognizing her mom is understandable, but I wish the whole situation had been more complicated than a simple misunderstanding and her mom had a more legitimate reason for leaving.
Speaking of simple plots, it was unbelievably easy how the MC got her stepmother in trouble. I'm always hoping to see more intrigue in my books, but there was nothing like that here. Once the MC's dad realizes that the stepmother tried to sell his beloved daughter, she's sent to the abandoned courtyard and not allowed to leave. It really didn't take much convincing.
For other characters, they didn't deserve the ending they got. I'm thinking of the MC's stepsister Wei Zheng in particular. She's a vicious character for sure, but no one deserves to get continuously sexually assaulted with her husband's approval. It felt like the author had zero moral issues with writing those scenes, which were extremely cringe-y to read.
Some characters' actions didn't make sense at all. Li Song was one of them. I don't understand his love/hate relationship with the MC. Like he's willing to marry her half-sister so that he can still see her occasionally and be part of her family?? What kind of twisted logic is that? And why on earth did the empress try to kill herself when she's been talking all book about wanting grandkids and she knows the MC is about to give birth any moment? She was more excited about the MC being pregnant than the MC and ML were themselves. Like I said, some things felt like an arbitrary author decision rather than characters staying consistent with their personality.
The lack of focus on things happening in the greater world was also annoying. I understand that the MC is a young girl, and typically women are sheltered to some extent from politics, but it was absolutely crazy to me that the ML didn't tell the MC about the rebellion. He just warned her to stay home and be careful while he was busy working overnight to take care of some things. Like come on, I think the MC deserves to know when there's a serious rebellion going on!!
Anyways, overall it was an okay story, but everything I mentioned above definitely took away from my enjoyment of it and greatly grossed me out at times.
After finishing this book, I feel the need to write how I feel about it.
The plot is quite popular (the rebirth of MC to her own body, know future events, etc.) but I still like this type of story line. However, I find the character of the FL a little too unforgiving. She is very harsh towards those who wronged her in the past life, even though that person might have not done anything to her yet in this life. The prime example is with her youngest brother. Although in her past life he was bad, for this life time as he is raised by different people, his fate is different. He is a different person yet our FL still very bias towards him, albeit she treated him better later on.
Also the author still leave a few story arch hanging, such as Wei Chang Hong’s future with Gao Qing Yang or whether Empress Chen forgive Emperor Chong Zhen in the end...
All in all though, this is not a bad read if you have some spare time.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Chongfei Manual focuses more on development on the relationship between thw two MCs. Not many conflict appear in the story, and the author also did not drag a conflict between MCs and side characters for too long. I appreciate the fluff, the way the ML pining for the FL and pampered her since her childhood is quite adorable. Some people might find the age gap a bit uncomfortable, but since the story is set in ancient China, I think it is still quite acceptable (as most girls married young back then).
FL can be a bit ruthless and cunning sometimes, but not too severe. She's also very protective of her twin brother, whom I really hope to be able to get a little side story about his thoughts. The ML is portrayed as a cold-blooded, vicious and ruthless prince, but the novel did not say much about this side of his and focus more on his interaction with FL.
It was quite an enjoyable read for me and the translation is great, hats off to the author and the translating team.
For some reason, I'd picked this Chinese historical novel up some time ago but never finished it. I ran across it again, read the first chapter and - whew, there went the weekend.
I'm not sure if it's the author or the translator but the story of Wei Luo is fascinating. There is ordinary life in historical China, there is the political maneuvering between families and factions and there is romance. What makes this plot interesting are the differing time lines. Much like in the movie Sliding Doors, the author shows what happens or what doesn't happen in her life at different key points of Wei Luo's life. Sometimes even Wei Luo gets confused as to what timeline or characters are appearing. And there is a lot of regret - both good and bad characters are shown pondering what they should have done to make their lives or plans go more smoothly. It's a very entertaining read.
It's now 2/19/24 and ... tbh I started reading through my notes but quit cuz I didn't even want to bother. I think this is the c-novel I've read (through) that I hated the most. Maybe it's cuz so many people talked it up and what in the actual fuck y'all. What. The. Fuck.
First of all FL is an underage child for SO GODDAMN LONG AYFKM. And then there's ... it was just so fucked up. Like I'm usually strong team FL and almost anything she does is okay (as long as there's a good reason and sometimes even not). But this chick was an asshole. And STUPID.
Instead of trying to FIX problems she just ... kept throwing roadblocks like OMFG. Other than saving that one chick who became her servant I think? She did almost zero good things.
I don't even want to think about this book. D---- or F. Ugh. ~*~*~*~ C13 uhoh lol appearance of ML in the home. Though the fact that FL is only 6 makes it creepy ESPECIALLY with the ANs at the end *shudders*
C15 the 5th sister is a monster but I currently also blame the dad for being SO partial to FL like this is not okay. Seriously though WTF ES5 & her mom are comic book level static character evil.
C31 omfg even third aunt poisoned FL. (Also in c32 we’re what in day 5 of FL missing her studies? What about the princess refusing to take medicine?)
C35 tbh I found the author pretty immature (or the translator?) But like… while it’s normal for FL to dislike the kid - kinda - I mean her soul is 16, it’s batshit to blame an infant for his mom. Also why is anyone letting ES5 see her mom she should be raised by someone else (too). What a mess.
C39 O.o 1-2 year jump? We went from FL being 6 and her half brother being 7-8 mo to her just turning 7 and in this chapter she’s now eight 🤷🏻♀️
C47 so for me these interactions b/t ML & FL aren’t cute they’re creepy. She’s only 13 (lol sidenote I’m salty this bitch hasn’t gotten her period yet) and he’s like 20-21? Ew. Or is she 12? 🤷🏻♀️ I think it said the princess is now 14 & FL is a year younger so…
C59 sigh I knew the princess would fall for her bodyguard. I hope it doesn’t turn out awful. Am very irritated at this whole Li Xiang thing & how little her parents did to punish her just omfg
C63 Jesus Christ Li Xiang won’t even let a 6yo go. She’s truly fucked in the head. Poor little Wei Chang Mi might be the best character in the book.
C64 🙄 I knew her period started. Also I hate how she’s trying to keep her friend & cousin separated like why not try to look for solutions. Grr.
C66 FL is so fucking stupid & I’m irritated at how shackled she is by her past life re: friend & cousin. This plot sink sucks ass. I’m actually repulsed by this first kiss she’s still what 13-14? This age difference is too extreme. Just gross.
C72 I’ve basically reached the “I’m reading this in horror” stage… dude wtf the restaurant & the people next door
C79 Li Xiang & her parents are all POS. ~ironically Li Song has become one of the best characters in fact though I know it won’t happen with some minor changes IMO he’d be the best ML. Alas.
C80 ooooookay so this ends with Li Song thinking about his rotted heart (& how he wants to stab FL in the heart) so never mind.
C83 so she’s turning 14 next month. So much ew. Also why/how is it 99% of the adults in this book are terrible?!
C85 tbh I’m wondering if the author was 13 when writing this? Cuz that would like… Really explain things. I just can’t otherwise with how awful & clueless everyone is. (Yes I basically began hate reading long ago cuz I need to see what it is that made people love this book so.)
C86 as the translator said FL is too thoughtless the parents are already discussing betrothal gifts like this bitch is always behind. And not very bright, I just… 🤦🏻♀️
C88 seriously the kisses are gross. Beyond all the biting which … Is not described as sexy, she’s 13 and he’s 22. Dude.
C90 🙄😒 and of course her brother finds the hairpin FL bought for ML. Which also the whole dreaming of kisses thing is 🤢🤢🤢 also bitch is NOT SMART she fucking just left the hairpin there like AYFKM. Throughout she hasn’t been smart- just lucky. Ugh. (Also like… how TF can stores just have dragon shit, but whatever.)
C91 dude her brother is creepily obsessive & possessive I’m literally recoiling from my screen as a read. Ugh.
C95 lulz Wei Zheng schemed herself. Li Song’s actions/motivation made me not like him but I guess he was under the influence (him wanting to be violent was my issue). *sigh* and he still wanted to take responsibility for WL. Song Hui is a good guy too. One of like 3 good characters in this book so far. (The other 2 being Aunt4 & 6yo Wei Chang Mi.)
C96 O.O I see why the translator said it would’ve been better for LS to have killed WZ the previous chapter. And we lose a minutely good guy cuz dude no.
C100 “Gao Qing Yang was silent for a moment. Soon, she slowly said, ‘Oh. I don't have anyone I like. But if there is someone that I like, I wouldn't stubbornly chase after him. If he doesn't like me, then I'll just find someone else.’” We might’ve finally found another good character & one even smarter than many others.
C104 ew. Ew ew ew ew. Ew. I am disgusted from/to the center of my chest. Ew. Did she want him to finger her?!? After all this “oh men & women can’t be close” AYFKM. Ew. Dude she’s fucking 13. (I don’t think she’s turned 14 yet?) WTAF. OMFG. Like … look I know there are 11 yo’s out there having sex but would your ~average 13 yo think to have someone finger her? Especially one raised in a society so conservative she can’t even appear in front of a non male relative (and maybe even a male relative isn’t okay?!) I am so grossed out. Also? So fucking stupid it LITERALLY hurts. After making such a goddamn fuss about not being seen how it’ll ruin her reputation etc she fucking goddamn lifts the carriage curtain I just fucking can’t omfg. I’m literally having a stress response.
C109 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 she gave him a handy/he made her. Ew. Cuz he listened to the ~conversation FL had with that Gaobitch after GYahatever almost strangled FL I just omfg WTAF. (And the 4th prince of other country 🙄😒… he & GYwhatever would be a good match.)
C110 🙄😒 that stranger woman was definitely their mom 🙄
C111 😒 continuity error? Why would Wei Zheng be in a Duke Ying carriage? 😒 I SUPER fucking hate how against the relationship FL is re: her oldest cousin & best friend. What an ass.
C149 😒 I still think the emperor is a stupid POS.
🙄😒 c153 as if I needed more reasons to think princess LiuLi is TSTL
C161 look I’ve never liked WeiBaoShan but it was excessive what the author did to her - and mostly cuz she was an illegitimate child which isn’t her fault. Partially cuz she tried to climb too high (and *sigh* kept analyzing & scheming against FL… but those were relatively minor - nasty words & bumping into her - though ok yes with FL being unknowingly pregnant it could’ve been serious. Still.)
C162 ok I will say Zhao Jie is a mostly good husband & definitely while FL is pregnant & his words & comfort at the end of the c were very sweet
**“She was reborn with memories, but this time, she wouldn’t be naive. She’d be unstoppable.”**
*Chongfei Manual* is a slow-burning historical romance with a sharp edge. Wei Luo, once an innocent girl betrayed by those closest to her, is reborn with a mission: protect herself, outwit her enemies, and rewrite her fate. What follows is a story of calculated moves, court intrigue, and a romance that’s as obsessive as it is intense.
Feng He You Yue crafts a world rich in palace politics and emotional tension. Wei Luo is no damsel—she’s clever, manipulative, and unapologetically ruthless. Her dynamic with Prince Zhao Jie is complicated: he’s possessive, powerful, and unwavering in his devotion, even when it borders on unsettling. Their relationship walks a fine line between passionate and problematic, and readers will either be hooked or conflicted.
The pacing is deliberate, with a focus on character psychology and long-game strategy. Some readers may find the emotional tone dark and the characters morally gray—Wei Luo’s vengeance can be brutal, and Zhao Jie’s love is laced with control. But that’s part of the draw: this isn’t a fairy tale, it’s a survival story in silk and shadows.
📚 Recommended for fans of rebirth tropes, imperial drama, and heroines who play the game better than anyone else. If you liked *Dream of the Spring Boudoir* or *To Be a Virtuous Wife*, this one’s worth a read—just be ready for some emotional whiplash.
It’s actually 2.5 stars..The reason I like to read c-novels is the development in their characters. However, this novel failed to give that..For example -
Wei Lou: Although the author try to make strong, resolute, cold, calculating, it came out somewhat selfish and spoiled. There wasn't much of a character development
Li song ; I rather find him pitiful. I didn't think Li song deserve this ending.Whatever happened to him was Li xian and Wei Zheng fault. He didn't caused much of a trouble for the fl..
Chang hong & Chang min: They should have got more story in the novel..I was expecting to see some bonding with Wei Lou after the initial hatred & concern. But they had none.I guess this was one of the reasons that wei lou seemed more selfish rather than cold hearted.
Wei lou and servants : After reading many c-novel I like how the fl bonds with their close confidents. This was also missing in this novel.
Besides the epilogue was not satisfying at all. There were many characters that I wanted to have sneak peak but they didn't get none..
The way the author portrayed the FL when she is just 6 is disturbing. Example first time going to FL fiancé house . What is this crabapple petal falling on her eye lashes she not young girl as per Chinese historical standard to make it alluring. What is with this creepy 14 something boy taking a bloom from a child. What is this about grabbing waist of FL to lift to save her. Do 6 yr old have waist even if they write should it be written like that. What fight between bunch young kids who are between 5-15 fighting gives as though FL sister (5] is having affair with FL fiancé (14) vibe.
The premise was good (as well as the translation), however, I can't empathize with our MC, Weichong. I tried to finish it but realized that ultimately, it will be just a waste of my time.
Quite surprising that I managed to reach chapter 90, I was really being generous and was kind of hoping that the story will turn out good halfway but I was sorely disappointed. The story was flat and uninteresting as it progressed. Such a pity because it could've been good
I dropped at chapter 16. I dont know but I just dont like the MC's attitude. And a lot of it didnt sit right with me like, yeah, the younger sister is bad, but MC could have treat her better. And everyone be fawning over MC just because some small reasons like she's adorable wtf? I KNOW MC IS MAIN CHARACTER BUT to let her be the center and disregard others that she hates as nothing is a big no for. Like i said, she could treat her younger sister better. Ugh im so mad. Kbye.
The FL's friends have more interesting love story than her and the ML.
I actually loved the alternative(?) love story of the FL and Li Song? it's more interesting. I hope you write their story even just 20 chapters. Maybe because the FL and ML's love story is kinda boring?? And the ML started liking her or showing interest at her age 7, let's just say 7, I kinda feel bad for saying maybe 4 or 5. It's okay with the age 9 years age gap, but she's just 7!!!! Isn't that called grooming??
I enjoyed the first 80 chapters more or less, but then we got to a 22 year-old lusting after a 13 year-old girl and I had a strong revulsion. I continued because I had already read 80 chapters and it got better, but I guess I couldn't move on from my dislike of MC. I think this book could be enjoyable to other people, I just couldn't get passed that.
I love how the ML doted on the MC and treated everyone else beneath him (well, hierarchically this is true ;D). But there is not much character development in it. The plot is predictable and cliche but I mostly do not mind this. A light read with just nice length.
I really liked the translation I read as the person doing the translation added images of items based on the authors descriptions. It added depth and understanding to the story, especially since I am not Chinese or have that as a background. I read the translation by Fuyu.
dropped it because this is simply not for me! the revenge lowkey gets completed in the first half and I wasn't really into the writing and the way certain plots were developing. also saw some spoilers (trigger warnings and tags) that made me drop it as they aren't my cup of tea.
