This was a cute cozy mystery. The Crypt family is comical and I enjoyed the overall story. There were enough potential suspects to keep me guessing until the end. I was a little annoyed that the heroine kind of stumbled on the answer of 'who dun it' rather than truly piecing everything together, but hey, it was still a cute story.
I thought this was a fun book. I loved the characters. I definitely enjoyed Tempest's family. Her family has some kick ass women in it. Frank is an interesting demon and seems to like to cause trouble. Wiggles just doesn't seem like an appropriate name for a hellhound, though. However, it does make me smile ; )
What a great start to a new series. Tempest and her family are one of a kind. Looking forward to learning more about her unusual abilities. Wiggles is very funny. Loved the part with the sunglasses. Sounds like a fun place to live.
Creative and cute. Light fare for easy distraction. Enjoyed the constant use of sweets and the appearance of a hellhound. Looking forward to the next Crypt family adventure, especially if Aunt Queenie comes along for the ride.
Tempest Crypt and her whole family, sister, Mother, Grandmother, Grandfather, Aunt and Uncle keep the demon population down in Willow Tree Falls. When Sis gets arrested for murder, the family sends Tempest to fix it. And fix it she does with going down a checklist of potentials, finally figuring it out.
This book is a quick read. It's well written and well edited. It has good characters and a well developed plot. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
She belongs to a family of demon hunters. Her family stay at home to make sure demons don't break through but she tracks escaped ones for the angel police force as she can't be around her sister for long. When they were children a demon tried to kill her sister but she managed to trap him. Inside of her. Sometimes he breaks free and to stop him she limits the time at home and her business. Now her sister has been charged with the murder of one of people running for mayor. She is pressurised to get the real killer. Can she find the guilty party especially when an attack is made on another business owner and clues left at the scene all point to her sister. Add in demons, dwarves, a hell hound and a hunky fallen angel. A good plot with a nice twist at the end. But it would have been good if she and the fallen angel had had more interaction. Great characters and the newly made hell hound is terrific.
tempest crypt is a witch with a demon inside of her that she swallowed after saving her sister. she owns the bar cloven hoof and also freelances for the angel-force by being sent on assignments in which she tracks demons down.
tempest's sister aurora, is accused of killing deacon feathers, half-human/half-angel, who is a mayoral candidate. tempest is not having it -- her sister would never even hurt a fly. she assists the angel-force (even tho they aren't too happy with it) in clearing her sister's name.
so, i surprisingly really liked this lol. it's a quick read and i really like the characters. something about witchy cozy mysteries remind me of corny hallmark mystery movies, but i'm down w the movement. tempest's sidekick dog/hellhound, wiggles, is adorable and i love him
...than good, they say. In this case, it's better to be good and this book is. The first in a new series by this author, it's a delight!
A cool cast of characters, including witches, angels, a hellhound and a demon with a sweet tooth, leads us along the trail of cookie crumbs left by the killer of a mayoral candidate. A wonderfully twisty plot keeps you hooked right through to its clever end.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy and loved it so much that I bought it. I have to admit that seeing a character sharing my name added sprinkles to this delectable cupcake of a tale, too!
So, a new series from KE O'Connor. Luck of the Witch is the first book of her new 'Crypt Witch Cozy Mystery Series'. I really enjoyed reading this book. The main characters (Tempest Crypt, her sister Aurora and the rest of their family and friends - and not so friends) already seem familiar and well rounded. All in all, without giving any plot spoilers, I reckon that this could be her best series yet. So give it a read and get to meet the people of Willow Tree Falls. Loved it!
Magic, demon-catching, a dog becoming a hellhound, a family tradition of demon-fighting, all in a fascinating little town where non-magical tourists miss seeing the magic right in front of fhem!
An amusing and exciting story. Kept me interested enough to buy the second book in the series. K E O’Connor is an ingenious writer with a enchant for creating fascinating characters.
It's a supernatural murder mystery. I enjoyed this book would've given it 4 stars except that there were moments where Tempest is stuck on a suspect that's obviously not the murderer and critiques the Angel Force for acting the same.
This irritated me. The Angel Force believes her sister did it. So she's the main suspect, Tempest comes to the rescue and begins looking for alternative suspects. So good so far. She starts the suspect list, Axel, Mannie, Rhett, Petra... Tempest gets absolutely stuck on one suspect (no spoiler 😉) but although they are hiding something it's pretty obvious to LITERALLY EVERYONE that he's not the killer.
It's a cute enough story. Tempest sometimes gets annoying with her keep everyone at arms length. But I also enjoyed her character. Aurora (the sister accused of murder) comes off super dizzy but I did find myself wanting to see what she could do.
Wiggles is by far my favorite especially after a few chapters 😉 and Frank is another fun character though a tiny bit psychotic! It's a quick cozy read. I enjoy the supernatural murder mysteries and this one isn't bad.
I wasn't able to figure out the killer till the very end, that could be because if Tempest being obsessed with a suspect or that I didn't pick up the clues along the way. Either way I applaud the author for being able to fool me.
As always this is solely based on my opinion what may be a 1 star for me may be a 5 star for you. This was on KU I can't say I'd buy the book, e version or otherwise, but it's a book that was fun to read nonetheless.
This is a cozy witch-oriented mystery story. Tempest Crypt lives in Willow Tree Falls and her family, witches, keep order over an underground prison for demons. Tempest has her own problem, though, a demon kept within her that she has to keep in control. It had tried to get at her sister, Aurora, and Tempest was able to save her.
Since it's a cozy mystery there is a murder, of course, and her sister is arrested by the quite incompetent group of Angels that serves as a police force. (More like the Keystone Cops than anything else.) Then there's this woman, Petra, who has an argument with Tempest and runs over her dog, killing it.
Not a smart thing to do. Tempest (with help) is able to bring the dog back to life but now it's a hellhound. Devoted to her and sweets, especially cake, in equal measure.
Unless you thrown in a lot of pancakes.
So, all Tempest has to do is prove her sister is not the killer, find the real killer, get used to her (now able to talk) hellhound and deal with her inner demon, Frank, often trying to take total control of her body.
The world for this mystery series seems dominated by angels and demons with one family of witches helping to keep the demons in check. Our protagonist, Tempest Crypt, has a few extra powers that include being able to hold a demon inside herself. Of course, the demon doesn’t like the situation.
The stage is set when Aurora, Tempest’s sister, is accused of murder. Tempest is determined to clear her sister’s name by finding the murder.
Frank, the demon inside Tempest, and her dog are major characters in their own right. The story is interesting and the characters are well developed. The solving the mystery seems to follow good old detective work with a few unauthorized activities.
The story is humorous which helps keep your interest. Definitely worth reading.
Tempest Crypt is a demon fighting witch. And has a demon inside her, not that it makes a difference in her demon fighting capabilities. When her sister is accused of murder, and then arrested, Tempest will stop at nothing to clear her name.
This cozy paranormal mystery features a family of demon fighting witches, and the residents of a small, magical town. Romance is very slow burn, there are a couple of interested men, but nothing happens with either, and Tempest is only really interested in one of them. Some very amusing side characters, particularly Tempest's dog, Wiggles, and her aunt.
Recommended for those who enjoy their paranormal cozy mysteries with tough heroines, and talking dogs...
This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and with a slightly dark storyline. A family of witches in a small magical town stand guard over a prison of demons beneath yours underneath the cemetery. On occasion the demons can escape through cracks in the Crips and Muslims. This family of witches is there to stop them when they get out. Our main character is a witch Who chases down the ones that get away. She is the daughter of the one of the female witches. There’s a pair of grandparents and aunt and uncle the mother and two grown daughters. It is a bit darker than some as they are fighting demons but it is an entertaining Supernatural cozy mystery series worth reading. Check it out
I liked that this is a little bit dark, because that's my jam, but I never entirely bought into the premise. Maybe there just wasn't enough context for the relationship between the angels and the demons and the environment of the town. The thread of the encroaching tourists was something that could have really paid off, since it got increasingly difficult for the protagonist to keep her situation under wraps, but that was all but dropped early on. I also found her investigative technique way too aggressive; it might have worked for the character, but I was surprised that anyone was giving her any information and not just telling her to eff off.
I think I’ve discovered my new favourite series… 15 (I think?) books in the series and all available on Kindle Unlimited 😍🙌🏼
After being sick and tired of reading romance books, I decided to give this book a go, and I was not disappointed! This first book captured my imagination (something which luckily comes easily for me whilst reading) and I could picture myself walking through the town, sipping coffee and watching the story unfold. I highly recommend this first book for anyone who is into witches, creatures and magic. Mysteries unfolding left right and centre, and I struggled to actually put this book down.
I found the whole track of Frank, the residing demon, quite repetitive and tiresome. It was a serious thing, but everyone in Tempest's family wasn't taking it seriously enough, considering another family member's (Aurora's) life was always under threat, thanks to Frank.
I didn't enjoy the Angel Force characters either. Not even Tempest herself. I only liked the dog Wiggles somewhat.
This book didn't turn out to be entertaining for me. After 11 chapters, I jumped straight to the last few pages and gave the story some closure.
A fun way to pass a few hours. Tempest is a tough, sassy and independent woman who struggles with the burden of Frank, a demon, who possessed Tempest and is difficult to control when she is near her sister, Aurora.
However, now that Aurora is under suspicion of murdering mayoral candidate Deacon (who just so happened to be dating her), Tempest must stay strong and find the killer before Frank can finish off Aurora.
Throw in a handsome fallen Angel biker, Rhett, and a handsome half-demon called Axel, and it life just keeps getting more complicated for this witch.
Oh, and Wiggles’ brush with death has some unexpected repercussions ;-D
This is a definite cozy mystery! The murderer caught me by surprise but the story was too cutesy for my taste. The names for the stores and the characters were as sweet as Frank’s taste for sugar. I am also getting tired of stories where the family expects one of them, in this case, Tempest to solve the mystery and prove her sister didn’t commit the murder. Why can’t they all work together? Why is Tempest her sister’s keeper and what makes her special so that only she can solve the mystery? While not to my taste I can see others enjoying this book.
Tempest Crypt lives in a magically shielded town where normal people aren’t allowed. There are witches and creatures everywhere and that can make for some twisty situations. When a prominent half-angel ends up dead with her sister as a suspect, she takes a break from demon-hunting to figure out what going on in her hometown.
Not terrible. There were a few plot points that were a bit much and it was overly histrionic throughout. Very convoluted cast list and shallow characters. In general it just didn’t grab me.
Although I adored the dog and most of the characters are a kick, I found the mystery part lacking. Tempest was a pitiful sleuth expecting everyone to tell her the truth about where they were. Everyone was withholding information! Then, the killer was so far fetched that she never would have figured it out if she hadn’t overheard them. Without that key piece, the whole situation would have never come to light. Plus, it was never explained how she got Frank. She saved her sister but how? Just too many holes and fast wrap up. I won’t be continuing this series.
3.75 rounded up to 4. Very entertaining and different, great start to a series, but some things made no sense... Felt like Tempest was never running her store, the whole controling Frank thing was a bit too easy and convenient sometimes, and does she ever sleep? Ever? She passed out once, but it felt like she never slept besides that. Or took a shower to wash a cake covered face.
Cool new-to-me world of witches, demons, bikers, angel farts, ahem, angel police, and some fun snark. I struggled a bit with trying to understand the situation with Frank and Aurora, but it does get explained a bit later in the story. Confusion about that situation was frustrating me, so I almost stopped reading when Wiggles was killed. Glad I kept going.
Lots of room for more stories and I am looking forward to them.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book is the first in a new series, and I applaud the author’s clever imagination. We yearn for Tempest to admit her feelings for the man who really is in her heart. The mystery is great, and i like the way Tempest solves whodunit and why. Not a spoiler, but Tempest spends the last few chapters with truly nasty stinky hair. If she takes time to shower and shampoo, O’Connor doesn’t mention it. HOORAY for a great new series!!
It’s hard to read something new and interesting in a genre that has a ton of books. Well, this author did just that. Tempest is such a different character in a different kind of town that was so much fun to read. There was a lot of thought and detail put into this story and it shows. I loved every word.
Tempest is a demon hunting witch. Her family guards the demon prison, it is their inheritance. Tempest also has a gift, though she uses it only when absolutely necessary. She can swallow the demon, then eject him once inside the prison cell. Except Frank, the body sharing demon who won't leave. Great read!
