Uncanny Kingdom

Hexed Detective: A Three-Book Collection

Rate this book
Detective Rita Hobbes’ life has been mysteriously erased, and her day isn’t about to get any better.

All Rita wants is to abandon dreary Blackpool and start over somewhere new. But when she triggers a magical hex that renders her invisible and traps her in her hometown, escape seems impossible.

Rita soon finds that Blackpool has some hidden secrets: a fallen Angel buried beneath the sea in a glass prison, bloodthirsty werewolves, and living nightmares dressed in fine suits and animal masks that can turn your mind to soup.

Thrust into a world she doesn’t understand, Rita finds herself trying to solve cases that are by any sane measure unsolvable.

Worse still, the only person she can turn to for help is a self-confessed liar, cheat, and--according to him--the future king of Great Britain.

I’ve loved every single “Uncanny Kingdom” novel whether by MV (Matthew) Stott or his partner in crime David Bussell. Whenever I see that name I just know that the book contents will be superb. No surprise then that I’ve loved the newest series set in this universe, MV Stott‘s Hexed Detective. This is a wonderful urban fantasy series, and it’s books have so far easily been worth five stars each. They had just what I wanted, were well written, with excellent world building and a great plot. The lead, “hexed detective” Rita Hobbes is just the sort of complex kick-a** heroine I love. She puts lesser detectives like Dresden (who I’ve always loved) to shame. At the same time the cast of supporting characters are simply superb. If you’ve missed out on these stories to date then today’s your lucky day as you can get the first three books of the series for a price that’s about half of what you’d pay to buy each individually. Hmm. Half off and still get the same great books? Seems like a “no-brainer” to me. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - these three books definitely deserve it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that each of these books is most definitely “one to read”. Bottom line: this book set is easy to highly recommend.

I love this series. Characters that jump off the page, villains that give you nightmares, terrific stories, lots of action, and Carlisle (the Wizard, not the place!). These books just grab you from the first page and won't let go until you have finished. Prepare for sleepless nights, and not just because you can't put the books down.
Matthew Stott is one twisted individual but so much the better for us, his adoring public. If you like urban fantasy with a large smattering of WTF moments, his books are for you. All the books in the Uncanny Kingdom world, written by Matthew and his partner-in-writing-crime Davd Bussell, are fabulous and you should make it your next mission to read them all. As each one appears, I am so excited I practically inhale them. Unforgettable and unputdownable.

Terror has never been so fun!

This series is stellar, with twists, turns, unexpected characters, action aplenty, and some of the best banter around. I loooooved this series and its unpredictability and imagination. If you are a fan of cursed cops, a wicked werewolf, and creatures ripped straight from your nightmares, (and who isnt?) then this series will knock your socks off, tickle your toes, and make you a fan for life.

Engaging characters with a fast moving high action packed plot. The story had twists and turns that you are not expecting. The writing is authentic paranormal thriller. Spine-tingling and goosebumps throughout the books. Will be reading more books from Uncanny Kingdom. You even like the bad characters and is a tear-jerker in more than one part of the books. I couldn't put the books down. Read all three all night.
