Carla Neggers is the New York Times bestselling author of the Sharpe & Donovan series featuring Boston-based FBI agents Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan, and the popular Swift River Valley series set in the small, fictional New England town of Knights Bridge. With many bestsellers to her credit, Carla loves to write now as much as she did when she climbed a tree at age eleven with a pad and pen and spun stories perched on her favorite branch.
A native New Englander, Carla and her husband divide their time between their hilltop home in Vermont, a sofa bed at their kids' places in Boston and various inns, hotels and hideaways on their travels, frequently to Ireland.

To appreciate this book you must need to have read the other books in the series. It does not work well as a stand alone. Too many character names are thrown out with little detail. Having not read any of the other books I felt no connection to anyone. Those who have read the series probably loved the follow up this story gives them.
I'm not sure if the original relationship between Alex and Ian was in previous books. Hopefully it was because as this book is I felt there was little between them. Perhaps if I had read about them previously I would have cared more.
I adore this series so much, and I was excited that Carla Neggers released a Christmas novella. I actually thought it was going to be about Dylan and Olivia, which I would have known had I bothered to read the synopsis. And so I was pleasantly surprised with how this one went. I really enjoyed Alexandra's story, and her chemistry with Ian. However, because of how it was set up, there was no buildup in their relationship. I was missing that, but it didn't ruin the romance. They were cute together, and this only made me want a full story with them as the main characters. One problem I had with this, though, were the info-dumps throughout. They were nice, because I'd forgotten some of what had happened in the last three books, but it was a lot of information being tossed out (so that if someone read this first before the other books, they would be thoroughly confused). They also didn't fit sometimes, and I was even confused once or twice because of all the details. But overall, I loved Christmas at Carriage Hill and it was something nice to tide me over until the next Swift River Valley book is released. :)
Christmas at Carriage Hill was a very sweet addition to the Swift River Valley series. I have been a fan from the start. After finishing the novella, I don't feel like this can't be a stand alone novella. I suggest reading the other books first to have a slight clue as to who everyone is in Swift River Valley. There are a lot of old characters that show up for Dylan and Olivia's wedding.
I enjoyed Ian and Alex's story. I loved how Ian knew they weren't finished and did what he could to woo her back. I found myself tearing up at the gift that Ian gave to Grace. What an incredible memory to give to her. That being said, while I enjoyed the story, I felt a little cheated. As with a lot of novella's, I always want more. I would have loved to see more of how Ian and Alex met. I feel like their story could have been a full novel. We got the aftermath of the angst without seeing what caused the angst. I would have also loved to see more of Dylan and Olivia's wedding. They have been a favorite couple of mine since the beginning. I wanted to read their vows to each other!
I think 2014 was the first year I read anything by Carla Neggers, and I've become a fan. I was happy to see that Neggers wrote a Christmas novella, set in the part of Massachusetts where my mother grew up.
Christmas at Carriage Hill is a contemporary romance with an old-fashioned feel. There's an impending wedding, New England snow, ice skating, English scones, and a military man who won't let go of his true love.
Alex and Ian dated, broke up, then ran into each other while traveling abroad for a wedding. While the plot wasn't thoroughly fleshed out and the secondary characters were a little flat, those are acceptable in a novella. I appreciated the great scenery, the main characters, the recipes, and the happily ever after. The power of nostalgia got to me, too, as I remember visiting the Quabbin as a child.
I enjoyed this light, uplifting, Christmassy novella by a favorite author... and it's a steal at 99¢.
This book was a tough one for me. I had a difficult time getting into it and found myself looking repeatedly at my page count to see just how much more I had to go in order to be finished with it. I thought that it had a romantic element of sorts, but it just never seemed to pull me in enough. I wish I could say more, but there it is.
I loved the cover of this book!

This was a cute little romance a follow up to one of the main books of the Swift River Valley Series. I wish it could have been a little bit longer than it was but I still recommend!

So…I am not going to lie here. While I usually really enjoy Carla Neggers books, this one left me wanted more.
First of all, I am not a fan of novellas. I wanted to read this one because Carla Neggers is one of my favorite authors and because I really enjoy her other stuff. But this one was…short. Since I am unfamiliar with this series, I was pretty lost. Characters, places….I had no idea what was going on. That is the reason why novellas are usually on my don’t read list – you just can’t get enough detail out of 50 pages.
Maybe that isn’t fair for a review either.
While this book wasn’t my favorite, Carla Neggers is really spectacular. I do look forward to reading more from her.
Short, sweet, and lovely. In the mood for a good tale of love.....
When fashion designer Alexandra Rankin Hunt is asked to create the dresses for Olivia Frost's Christmas wedding in tiny Knights Bridge, Massachusetts, she jumps at the chance. She's certain she'll never get to design one for herself—not with her history of falling for the wrong men. Ian Mabry, the sexy fighter pilot whose bravery reminded her of her beloved great-grandfather, was the worst yet.
To Alexandra's surprise, Ian is also at Carriage Hill, Olivia's picturesque country inn. And if anyone can charm his way into a wedding, it's him. Ian wants more than an invitation—he's determined to find a way back into Alexandra's life.
A nice, sweet, short story in this multiple book series about life in Knights Bridge, Massachusetts. This was takes place just as Olivia & Dylan are getting married. It features two British characters -- Alexandra and Ian. The former is designing Olivia's wedding dress and the latter is there as a friend of the couple. But, there is a history between Alexandra and Ian that needs to be resolved and it is by the end. No profanity and for once in this series, no sex scenes although there was discussion about "going to bed".
Well, we have gone from vintage custom made to up and coming designs for Olivia’s wedding. And there are recipes in this one!
The nuances of the original love story - Grace and Philip - reach a fruition here that is oddly satisfying. Alexandra is Philip’s great-granddaughter, come from England to attend her cousin’s wedding, for which she has designed the bridal party’s ensemble.
Her own RAF pilot has followed her to New England, as a guest of the groom. He has insinuated himself into all the events, complete to staying in the same place as Alexandra. And everywhere she turns, Ian is there. It takes them a while to get to why, but the gift of sharing these life events makes it special for Alex in a way she can’t explain.
This was an add on to "A Knight's Bridge Christmas", so I read it.
Two Brits come to Knight's Bridge on a mission - she's a dress designer who's working on the wedding dress & he's a RAF pilot coming to give an old lady a photo of her deceased baby daddy. Apparently he somehow found himself in Knight's bridge during WW2 & had sex with a young woman. He went back to England & died for his country & she got pregnant & never knew what happened to him.
This is another story that was mildly interesting, but I'll forget about the plot by next week!
I didn't realize this was a series until after I finished. That may explain why I didn't enjoy this novel as much as others. It was clear Alex was physically attracted to Ian, but she most certainly was not attracted to his personality. For this reason, I did not enjoy the romance. She was so set on forgetting about him, but the second he proposed, she's madly in love with him all over again.
A wedding on Christmas Eve, and the gathering of a Royal Air Pilots two great grandchildren flows through this short novella. The designer and former hockey player come together with their great grandmother to celebrate the love that began just before World War II.
Christmas At Carriage Hill is a Swift River Valley Novella by Carla Neggers. Philip Rankin, RAF pilot, had come to Boston, MA following the death of his beloved wife. Her brother had taken off with her jewelry and Philip wanted it back for his daughter. He ended up stealing the jewelry and running. He ended up in Swift River Valley. The small towns there were being cleared out, as well as the dead from the cemetery, to make room for a reservoir for water for Boston. Many of the people being uprooted settled in Knights Bridge. Grace Webster and her family were the last to leave the valley. When Philip arrived, he met Grace and they took shelter from a hurricane in a hideaway Grace had built. They fell in love; but Philip had to return home. He was caught up in WWI and never returned from one of his missions. Grace found herself an unmarried woman with a baby. She gave the baby up for adoption and lived her life as a teacher in Knights Bridge. Many years later, Duncan McCaffrey came to Knights Bridge and claimed his stop as her son. Through him, she met her grandson, Dylan McCaffrey who was getting married to Olivia Frost. Dylan and Olivia had traveled to England to trace Philip’s family and meet Philippa Rankin Hunt, Philip’s daughter, and finally return her mother’s jewels to her. In meeting relatives, they met Alexandra Rankin Hunt who was an up and coming London designer who had moved to the Cotswolds . Olivia had asked her to design her wedding dress and bring it to the wedding. She also designed the bridesmaids’ dresses. So Alexandra is in Knights Bridge for the wedding. Alexandra had met and fallen in love with Ian Mabry, an RAF Wing Commander. Their affair came to an end when Alex realized that Ian put his service first and didn’t seem to be able to compromise. She needed to pay attention to getting her business off the ground so didn’t have time for a romance, or so she told herself. Her business, though , was three doors down from the pub his family owned. She knew she would hear about him and possibly see him but only occasionally. She just had to get over him. After her trip from London, Alex spent a few days in Boston to get over her jet lag and to see the things Boston had to offer. At the end of those few days, she was taken by a car that was sent for her to Knights Bridge where she met Maggie Sloan who ran the Destination B&B that she and Olivia Frost owned. Maggie was pleased to tell Alex that a friend of hers was staying there too, Ian Mabry! That was just what Alex needed! What will happen in Knights Bridge now? Will the wedding go off without fail? What will happen to Alex while she is here? Knowing Carla Negger’s books, something exciting will happen; but what is it?
Alexandra Rankin Hunt is excited when she is asked to design the dresses for Olivia Frost’s Christmas Eve wedding. Although Alexandra lives and owns her own dress shop in a Cotswolds village in London, she agrees to make the trip to a small town in Massachusetts called Knights Bridge for the wedding. She’s hoping this will be a nice diversion from her relationship woes. Recently, Alexandra broke up with Ian Mabry, a RAF wing commander but Alexandra is having a difficult time forgetting about him entirely.
She’s shocked to find that Ian is also in Knights Bridge for the wedding. Determined to keep him at arm’s length, Ian has other ideas.
This novella is part of Carla Neggers’ Swift River Valley series. I usually love this author’s work and this is a sweet, romantic novella, but it clearly has to be read after reading the previous books in the series. There were many different characters mentioned, along with previous incidents. I hadn’t read any book in this series, so I was a bit thrown and couldn’t keep all the characters and their relationships straight. I’m sure if I read the series starting with the first book, it would have been a smoother read for me. I just spent too much time trying to keep all the characters mentioned straight in my head and it distracted me too much.
I did like the romance, the quaintness of small towns and the holiday atmosphere. I’m pretty sure it’s a series I would enjoy and I do intend to read the entire series from the beginning. It had me interested enough that I want to get book #1.
FTC Disclosure: Netgalley provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
Pro: One of my favorite premises with romance novellas is when the main characters have a history. The whole watching them get to know each other is already done and instead we get a little peek into a story that's already taking place. It was wonderful to see Dylan and Olivia's wedding and worked as a great plot device to get all the characters together. I also really enjoyed seeing a little resolution to Grace and the story of Alexandria and Dylan's family. Watching Ian and Alexandria work through their issues was really sweet and it felt like this was a relationship that worked.
Con: I need a family tree for Dylan and Alexandria's family. It was kept fairly simple by referring to people mostly by their relationships (like Alexandria's grandmother, Dylan's father) but if you're new to the series you're going to be really confused. I also would've liked for Alexandria and Ian's problems laid out a little clearer. I was never exactly sure why they broke up and then there were some comments that were made toward the end that seemed a little out of left field.
Overall:If you're a fan of this series this is definitely not one to miss. We see the wedding for the couple from book 1, get a little more development in a pretty important story arc and see a romance develop that's sweet in it's own right. It's not perfect but it's a fun Christmas-y read and I'm completely with Loretta about the not loving snow!
This is the second book that I have read of Carla Neggers and the 3.5 in the Swift River Valle series. I think that Carla did a great job of setting the scene in both locations that the book took place in which was London and Swift River Valley. As I read it felt like I was transported to those locations and part of the scenery. In addition, I think that the characters were well developed and believable. As a reader this is very important to me because if the story is unbelievable the book ends up being boring and not worth finishing. Lastly, I loved the historical romance that she brought into this book. You got to learn more about Alexandria's grandma and her love story. I would love for her to do a book that told their love story as I know I would enjoy it!
The other aspect of the book that I thought was good was when Carla caught the readers up on previous characters that were in the previous three books in the series. I always like when authors do this because it brings back my favorite characters and incorporates them into the next story so you don't lose out on their story even if it isn't the main attraction. I am very interested to see where she is going to take the series going forward and can't wait for read the 4th book that is coming out this spring.
This is a novella. Alexandra Rankin Hunt designs wedding dresses. Alexandra lives in England. She got asked to make Olivia's wedding dress. Dylan is her cousin that her family new they had. Now she gets to be friends with the couple and comes to celebrate their wedding.
Alexandra has broken up with her boyfriend Ian Mabry. He is a RFA pilot like her great-grandfather. When she gets to Knights Bridge, Massachusetts for the wedding she is surprised to find Ian. Ian has decided that he wants her back.
This novella can stand alone it is better if you have read the previous stories. A lot of the storyline and characters we have met and know parts of the story. Secrets of the Lost Summer is where Dylan and Olivia met. How Dylan found out about his past and found family in England.
This is short and sweet romance. It compares Alexandra & Ian story to Dylan' mother & father who met before the war11.
I would have preferred more to the story. Though it was a good novella.
I was given this ebook to read by Netgalley and Harlequin to read. So I could in return give an honest review.
In this seasonal novella, Ms. Neggers continues the story of Olivia and Dylan from Secrets of the Lost Summer. It also tells the story of Alexandra Rankin Hunt and Ian Mabry. Alexandra is a Brit who has designed Olivia's wedding dress. Coming "across the pond" is just what Alexandra needs to get over her broken romance with Ian. What she doesn't expect is that Ian gets to Knights Bridge before she does and proceeds to stay and make her realize what she will be missing if she indeed breaks up with him.
There have been some major communication failures between these two and the wedding gives them a last chance to work on their romance. Alexandra is distantly related to Dylan and the sad story of Dylan's grandparents speaks to Alexandra about her and Ian.
This is a sweet story that finishes the loop for the first couple in the Swift River Valley series while saving a new relationship. An added bonus is an absolutely yummy recipe for Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Chestnuts that will be gracing my Christmas table!
“We overcomplicated things and got cold feet not because we were falling out of love but because we were falling deeply in love. It’s true, isn’t it, Alex?” “It is,” she whispered.
Christmas at Carriage Hill is a sweet holiday romance novella set in the charming town of Knights Bridge, Massachusetts. In a story where the past and present collide, Alexandra and Ian find themselves swept away by passion while contemplating their individual futures.
If you’re new to the Swift River Valley series, it may be a bit confusing jumping in with this short story. There are a lot of characters and quite a backstory that draws them all together which might be difficult to understand here.
When fashion designer Alexandra Rankin Hunt is asked to create the dresses for Olivia Frost's Christmas wedding in tiny Knights Bridge, Massachusetts, she jumps at the chance. She's certain she'll never get to design one for herself not with her history of falling for the wrong men. Ian wants more than an invitation he's determined to find a way back into Alexandra's life. This book started out as a historical book, and although there is alot of history init, it was not in itself a historical romance. But readers of that genre may enjoy this book. 4 stars.
This was a nice short read just in time for the holidays. This novella is a part of a series that I have not read, but luckily the author gives us plenty of background information to make sure we understand the world she’s created. I enjoyed meeting all of these characters who fans of this series likely already know so well. I really liked Alexandra and her personality, she’s pretty easy going and sweet. Ian is super cocky and confident, but it works for him. They were cute together and I enjoyed their story. If you have an hour to kill, snuggle in with this story.
So here's the thing. I believe that all novellas should be new reader friendly. I've brought plenty of new books based on a novella that grabbed my attention. This story revolves around wedding dress designer alexandra and het Ex Ian who find themselves at a mutal friends wedding. I loved the descriptions of the winter wedding but didn't find the romance that exciting. probably because I don't really enjoy romances where Ex's get back together. I found myself more overwhelmed then interested in the other characters and situations mentioned in the story, so overall just an Ok read for me.
