Gunter's Winter is an exotic fusion of Spanish, Buenos Airean and Paraguayan culture, of intrigue and human relations set against an unfolding backdrop of the military and political landscape of the time, with more than a touch of Chilean spice.
Colourful characters play out their lives revolving around Gunter, Eliza, Soledad and Veronica, the four poles, with passages of prose interspersed with free ranging poetical sections characterised by both their lyricism and their savagery. The overwhelming theme is the triumph of the human spirit, of love and liberation over corruption, greed and vice. Gunter's Winter has a truly mythical quality, part fable, part legend, part moral tale; it is both instructive and compelling, with a brilliantly devised and unexpected conclusion as reality and myth weave together.

About the author

Born in Asunción, Paraguay in 1950, Juan Manuel Marcos spent years as a political exile in Spain and the United States, during which time he earned two doctoral degrees and established himself as an important figure in Latin American literary criticism. Returning to Paraguay in 1989, he is now President of Norte University and a major political figure. Among his prior publications are Poemas (1970, René Dávalos Poetry Award) and Roa Bastos: precursor del post-boom (1982, Plural International Essay Award). Gunter’s Winter first appeared in 1987 as El invierno de Gunter and won that year’s Paraguayan Book-of-the-Year Award.

لقد قرأت هذا الكتاب لسبب واحد فقط غلافه! لقد كان الغلاف جذابا الى درجة الجنون ،،،،لكنت حين قرات الكتاب بعمق اذهلني ..الشخصيات :غونتر ، اليزا ، فبرونيكا ..شخصيات يشبهوننا انهم مثلي ومثلك و مثل الاشخاص الذين نراهم في حياتنا اليومية محملون بمستقبل غامض وواقع مشؤم ....الاحداث تتخللها رسائل جميلة .الكتاب بصراحة ترجمته مذهلة

أكثر من 100 صفحة قرأتها من هذه الرواية كي أدرك بشكل نهائي مدي عبثية فعلي هذا..
ربما العيب في الترجمة..ربما المشكلة في أسلوب الرواية الممزوج بالشعر والذي لم أستسيغه مطلقا..رغم أنها أول تعارف لي مع خوان مانويل ماركوس ومع أدب باراغواي عموما..
باختصار...هذه رواية لم تكتب لي..

Un libro que, debo admitir, me provocaba una gran curiosidad. Un libro cuyos primeros capítulos nos marcan la pauta de lo que vamos a recibir en estas no más de 300 páginas. Con un dejo cortazariano; los personajes nos conducen a sus mundos internos y así nos muestran como lidian con ese mundo externo tan opresor; desarrollada en la ciudad de corrientes (o ¿debo decir Asunción?), se construye así una historia terrible, un verdadero testimonio de las verdades y las hipocresías de la dictadura, de todas las dictaduras.

This may be a good book if you are very well informed about Paraguayan history and politics. A good background in literature, psychology and Catholicism would also be helpful. Personally, I found this book very difficult to follow in both Spanish and English. If I didn't have to read it for a graduate class, I would have quit after the first chapter.

I read this book in both Spanish and English, and couldn't understand it either way. The writing is pretentious and narcissistic. It is quite possibly the worst book I have ever read.

Ohjah. Ei teagi nüüd kust alustada. Hädavaevu sain raamatu loetud. "Jäta pooleli, jäta pooleli," sosistas kuradike (või inglike?) suurema osa raamatust. Ühel hetkel hakkas nagu minema, tekkis lootus ja siis tuli jälle kilomeetripikkune lause ja sellised kirjeldused, et pilk haaras iga kümnendat sõna. Kes on kuulnud väljendit, et kirjanik saab kirjutada kas auhindadele või lugejatele, siis siin oli see minu meelest küll ilmselge, kummale raamat rohkem mõeldud on. Muidugi, äkki olen ma ise liiga lihtsakoeline ja mõnekümne aasta pärast jääks sellest teine mulje.
