Twin demon trackers Shaun and Sarah Gallows are used to running into trouble — mostly the kind with fangs — but while Sarah embraces her powers to their fullest extent, trusting her instincts implicitly, Shaun distances himself from his abilities and can do little more than despair at his sister’s reckless nature and idly back her up.
When they come across a demon tracker who’s been torturing innocent super-naturals, they know they have to stop her. Sarah is desperate to punish the girl for what she’s been doing but Shaun’s instant attraction points to a soul-mate bond stronger than anything he’s ever had to fight before…
I'm the twisted mind behind The Gallows Novels and the After Death Series. If you want to know a bit about me, here it is: I spend too much time indoors and probably watch too many horror films. Some of my favourite things are; Alone time, people who know when to shut up, having a drink, eating pizza (usually after having too much drink the night before), reading books, adult swim cartoons, bad horror and sci-fi movies, proper good TV shows like Dexter & The Walking Dead, and last but not least having a laugh with my hilarious other half - this would usually include some of the above.
A great story- fantastic! Stevenson has pulled all the stops out on this one to give an exciting urban fantasy read.
Sarah and Shaun are cracking, ass-kicking and fun-filled characters on a mission to rid the world of anything that needs to be destroyed!
The flow to the story is really good and leads through to an exiting run of teen paranormal adventure.
Super characters and it runs well throughout- a page-turner for sure. I would like to to think anyone into Buffy/Angel, Supernatural, Vamps and the like would enjoy this super read- I am a fan of them all.
An interesting plot, along a magical path with romance, stakes, action and a multitude of creatures. You want it! I know you do... stop thinking- pick it up and do it!
The author has a wonderful ability to merge all the mystical elements. Keep an eye on this one- you will want more!
This is my first book by this author and it definitely caught my attention. Shaun and Sarah are twins and demon trackers. Sarah is reckless, comfortable in her own skin and has control over her powers. Shaun is cautious, underestimated and likes to think he is threatening. He really isn't. Shaun struggles with accepting his powers which affects him as a person and as a demon tracker.
The Gallow twins are synonymous with rough justice and run into trouble when they rescue a tortured fairy. Melissa is the Queen of Torture and she turns Shaun's world upside down. Shaun feels a primal attraction towards her which is overwhelming and dangerous. The Council turns a blind eye to the reports of torture and the Gallows are determined to unravel this mystery.
Shaun and Sarah both struggle with their inner demons which is inconvenient at times and lands them in trouble. They are 19, the story balances teenage issues and supernatural problems well.
I thought the characters were ok, I wasn't particularly attatched to anyone which is unusual. What kept me going was the compelling writing. The twins are surrounded by problems, puzzles, enemies, little or no support and I was never sure that they were going to make it out alive. It was fun watching them dig their own graves and panic trying to get out.
The writer builds a dangerous world, twists the roles of paranormal creatures and tweaks the magical system we are all so familiar with. The story was unpredictable till the last word and you never knew what direction it will take. The Mystery of Melissa was dark and murky, the climax was explosive.
A great story involving demon trackers, vampires, witches, fairies and psychos. The two central characters are twins Shaun and Sarah, in their late teens; as fallen angels their role is to hunt down and kill vampires and black magic practitioners. The story goes at a great pace, from one blood-curdling incident to another; Sharon Stevenson creates a wonderfully graphic atmosphere where you can as good as smell the foul vampirish odours and, as the demon trackers clean out vampire nests, feel and taste the gunge and gunk of exploding vampirish bodies. But there is more to the author’s writing skills than this: she is able to describe and convey effortlessly the essence of teenage life, with its angst, romantic and sexual upheavals, and endemic penchant for trashy fast food. It’s a story that hurtles you along in its wake. Sharon Stevenson writes brilliantly and has created an authentic milieu where a paranormal world and a normal world thrillingly coalesce. Her characters, immersed in an environment both of supernatural beings and of adolescence’s travails, distil and encapsulate what every good book needs: a viable reality we can really believe. Great stuff.
"Blood Bound" by Sharon Stevenson is the story of twin demon hunters Shaun and Sarah. They're 19 years old, already somewhat jaded by their job, even as they're still getting used to their powers and learning all the ins and outs of the supernatural world (in Stevenson's universe, "our" world is shared by all manner of supernatural creatures: vampires, werewolves, fairies, witches, psychics and demons, to name a few).
The world definitely has a "Buffy" feel to it, with hunters who have special powers (mostly extraordinary speed, strength and senses; and the ability to "taste" magic and determine what sort of creature it's coming from) and who are destined to fulfill their duties; and mortals who are (mostly) ignorant of the supernaturals walking about, except when they're not.
All the characters are well-drawn, especially the twins. The story is told from their alternating viewpoints (in third person, rotating chapter-to-chapter between Shaun and Sarah), and they're both sympathetic and believable. Even when they make questionable choices, they've got good reasons, and it's impossible not to root for them to win out in the end.
The supporting characters, too, are interesting and have depth (except for the twins' parents, but that feels to me like a deliberate choice by the author, and also something that will change as the series continues in future books).
There's plenty of well-handled action, and a little bit of (non-explicit) bedroom action, as both twins face romantic problems that end up tied into their demon-hunting work.
There's also a lot of mystery and lurking conspiracy, which is tantalizing and also a little frustrating (both for Shaun and Sarah, and for me as a reader). About the only thing I would criticize in this book is that I'd have liked at least a couple of concrete answers by the end of the book. This isn't a huge problem, because I knew going in it was book #1 of a series with at least two more planned. The first book of a series always has the burden of setting up the world and laying out the Big Bad that will be fought over the rest of the books.
The writing is clear and engaging, and the book is well-edited, too. I enjoyed it, I'm looking forward to book #2, and I'd highly recommend it.
I recently came down sick, and my boyfriend wisely gave me an iPad full of Kindle books to entertain me. "Blood Bound" by Sharon Stevenson was on the top of my to-read list--it's been a while since I've read a good demon hunting adventure with no-nonsense protagonists who are old hands at the tricks of the trade. The twins Sarah and Shaun are that duo. Sarah is incredibly confident and a strong heroine (my favorite), while Shaun is endearing and just innocent enough that his amorous situation with the villainous Melissa is hilarious at times. In an urban fantasy genre saturated with YA offerings that are restricted when it comes to pushing the envelope too far, and adult titles with protagonists who are sometimes too jaded to connect with, Blood Bound brings the best of both worlds to the table--the twins are tough but still open to wonder at new experiences, and there's exciting, gripping action mixed with dark graphic material for the more mature reader. Well-depicted characters are a must for me, so I was very pleased and engaged with the twins and their supporting ensemble, most notably Melissa and Dev.
Stevenson opens Blood Bound by diving right into a vampire staking hunt, without wasting time hashing out background stories or indulging in tedious detail. Although this technique can make the world feel bare bones in some places, overall, it proves to be a strong stylistic choice, and Stevenson hints that the answers we're longing for await in future entries (And hey, it took my mind off being sick!). The narrative rides its action-packed momentum all the way until the end, and leaves off with a satisfying teaser for the continuation of the series. I, for one, am extremely curious to hear more about the mysterious Council and explore how Sarah and Shaun entered the demon hunting trade in the first place. A riveting, heart-pounding start to an edgy series with memorable protagonists and nasty villains you just love to hate. Eagerly looking forward to the next one!
*I received a free copy of this e-book in a giveaway, which did not influence my opinion in any way.
Fast-paced urban fantasy with twin demon-hunters Sarah and Shaun Gallows. I enjoyed the characters, especially the squeamish-yet-curmudgeonly Shaun. For me, this is a winning combination in male main characters, and Shaun alone made the book for me. The other characters are also well-drawn and engaging. The book is set in an alternate-universe Scotland, and I enjoyed the Scottish slang used throughout. This isn't just a generic could-be-anywhere story.
The story involves Sarah and Shaun's attempts to figure out what the vicious Melissa is up to, whether she needs to be stopped, and how to stop her. There are also subplots involving Sarah and Shaun's complicated love lives (Shaun appears to be soul-mated to Melissa, and Sarah has two guys who are best buddies both wanting her, and an eye for a much younger guy as well). Also vampires. Lots of vampires. (Reason #573 why you might want to have a locked cage in your basement: to keep the vampire in.) I did feel like the story could have used more of a sense of urgency or rising stakes (no pun intended; if you've read it, you know what I mean!) as it progressed to the end; the problem to be solved was the same as it had been since about the middle of the book, with no greater or rising threats to the main characters as the end drew closer, until the very very end. There were also times when the action seemed to skip ahead or to a different setting without transition, and I couldn't quite figure out what was going on.
One other thing, the protagonists are 19 years old, but this is definitely not a YA book. The protagonists act as adults in their world, have adult lives and adult interests and concerns, and the book deals with adult themes in an adult manner. Which for me is a plus, but someone looking for a less-intense YA read might get more than they bargained for here.
A fun read, and I'm looking forward to more adventures with Shaun and Sarah.
Sharon Stevenson has taken the paranormal /supernatural genre and tweaked it jauntily askew with “Blood Bound.” Twin demon tracker/vampire hunters, Sarah and Shaun Gallows are your typical close siblings who just happen to be descended from Fallen Angels. While out on a typical ‘job’ the twins run into another hunter like them, but there is something off about Melissa, she’s beautiful, she haunts Shaun’s fantasies and may very well be Shaun’s soul mate! Did I mention she has psychotic tendencies and Shaun may have to kill her? Add in a few other twists and getting to the bottom of the story is an exciting adventure! There is a touch of snark and attitude throughout this fast-paced and complex tale. The main characters are so very typical of siblings, especially twins, with a closeness and sixth sense about each other that definitely has its humorous moments! Their love lives are a mess, their shared home is a mess, they have various ‘issues,’ they complain, they are real, completely believable and I totally adored them. One is petite and mouthy, one is a huge, scary looking Teddy bear, well, a Teddy bear who could crush you with ease. The supporting characters are well thought out and filled in, the friends are quirky, the villain is heinous, but even she could evoke my sympathy. The background descriptions were often frighteningly realistic, adding to the tension of the moment. Sharon Stevenson has a hit on her hands and has set a high bar for herself with “Blood Bound.”
This review was first publish on my blog" Lecture toute une Aventure"
Interesting first instalment but not enough background info....that was my feeling at the beginning of the book and sadly it stayed well after the last page. I liked the characters but i don't really understand the universe...Shaun and Sarah are demon trackers that was aid and repeated yes and we learn that it gives them some special powers oki....looks like there is some kind of organisation as well and their family is an important one....but why, how? who decided what creature are "good" or evil and right at the beginning we learn that Shaun was gravely hurt ( lost an eye) but not when or how...why he never accepted his power and wants a normal life? how was he raised?
I think some of these answers were needed to make this book even better and i do hope we will get them in the next one so that we really can understand Shaun and Sarah Better because at some time they are very, VERY confusing.
That being said the story is promising, there area lot of violence, some graphic, some no but the suspense and investigation give it a form of balance...some secondary characters are intriguing ( Elle) some are moving ( Katie), Ray is touching.....Dev i don't like him at all.. i don't want to reveal too much but there is another one you will probably hate if you are like me^^
Between Shaun and Sarah i really prefer Shaun, he is suffering but trying his best to adjust...Sarah is too single minded and while she wants to help her reckless attitude cause more damage than help.
So you like dark urban fantasy (with vampire, fae and others creatures) you could give this one a try knowing you will have a lot of unanswered questions, for my part i want to see what happen next before i decide for good where to shelve this book.
I read and reviewed this book on www.faebooks.co.uk and www.drunkenspacepenguin.blogspot.com as part of the Fae Books team. Below are key points from the review, and the full review can be found at either of the blogs above.
For starters, the story has the supernatural elements of nearly every paranormal entity you can imagine. Vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies, ghosts, and things I’d never even known the names of until now, all thrown together for one heck of a tale. I really didn’t want to put this one down.
Sarah and Shaun go through some interesting trials with various demons and have to battle the bonding that seems to be gripping Shaun-especially since he neither wants to be bound to another demon hunter nor does he particularly like his apparent soul mate. His fate is uncertain, but when Sarah’s life starts revolving around a vampire, things get sticky.
I love the characters in this story. Sarah and Shaun were unique characters; determined, and unconventional in every way. The amount of detail that the author puts into this book is phenomenal. It’s a read that grips you from the beginning, and keeps you enthralled until the very end, which leaves the reader craving the next book just to continue the story. There is just so much to this book that really sets it above other in this genre.
I like to think I’m a tough reviewer, but to be honest, as I was reading it, I couldn’t believe that this was an indie author who isn’t signed with Simon & Schuster or one of the other big publishing houses. As for a score, I’d simply have to give this one 5/5 (or 10/10) stars. Awesome book, I have already recommended it once and I’ll do it a thousand times over.
Shaun and Sarah, the Gallows twins. An unstable pair of young adults with a chip and vodka fixation, who just happen to be paranormal hunters... In a world of witches, vampires, werewolves and fairies, these two "trackers" do the dirty work of policing those paranormal entities who, like burnt toast, are a little on the dark side.
One night whilst out slaying vampires (as you do), Shaun is bewitched by Melissa, a dark creature from a family that makes Joseph Fritzl look like May Poppins. From there the story twists through "Buffy the Vampire" style action mixed with teenage angst and a dash of erotica, enough to make a fourteen year old boy, or this reviewer, blush fifty shades of pink.
This wasn't my usual read, I'm a hard-core sci-fi man myself, but I've seen enough young adult gothic fantasy to "get" this genre. The story is well written, well planned and well edited. There are enough hints to other events and characters not seen in this book to make you want to read the sequels. The main characters are well fleshed out and believable, even if I wanted to sit Sarah down and have a talk with her about not being so hard on poor Shaun all the time.
If I had one complaint, I'd want to see more gore! But that's just me, I like visceral description. The author may possibly have kept it toned down for a younger audience, although there are enough swear words and descriptions of sexual encounters to make me discount this.
If you like vampires, witches and fairies (oh my!), if you like young adult lust and angst, if you like a detective story with moments of rudeness and violence, then this one is definitely for you. Pass me the pointy stick, I'm popping out for a quick steak...
Nineteen-year-old vampire-tracking twins, Sarah and Shaun Gallows, enjoy a few advantages in life. Descended from fallen angels, they each are able to call upon superhuman speed, strength and psychic abilities, not to mention being able to subsist entirely upon junk food and alcohol without suffering so much as a pimple out of place.
But life’s not all beer and skittles for the Gallows twins. There’s always another vampire coven to exterminate, or a fellow supernatural in trouble, or a mortal love interest to be rescued. All of which usually occurring in the space of twenty-four hours.
And upon meeting Melissa -- a fellow vampire tracker with psychotic tendencies and an unshakable grip on Shaun’s desires -- things take an extra turn for the unusual. What has Melissa been doing to other supernaturals? How can a vampire tracker smell like a witch and teleport like a fairy? Is Shaun really bound to her, is she truly destined to be his unshakable soulmate, or is it just a case of Shaun lusting after what he can’t have?
‘Blood Bound’ by Sharon Stevenson is a gripping read populated by likable characters, with mysterious plotlines branching off left, right and centre. It helps to bear in mind that the author hails from Scotland; both her narrative and the dialogue of her characters are best enjoyed if you are able to swap your usual inner voice for a thick Scottish brogue. Five stars for a fine supernatural effort, and I look forward to following what promises to be a most intriguing and entertaining series.
This is a fun book to read. It starts right in the middle of the action as some Demon Trackers are taking out a nest of Vampires and then it just takes off from there. I enjoyed the pace of the story and how Stevens flawlessly jumps from one point of view to another. The Trackers are Twins, but they are very different people. First they look completely different, one a hot short girl, the other a tall disfigured, scary looking guy, and then they have very different personalities. Shaun always seems put upon, and not really into the whole tracking thing, while Sarah is all fired up and ready to kick butt whenever and wherever possible. I like the fact that even though Shaun is much bigger, but Sarah is the fierce one that takes the lead in most of the action. There are dead spaces in between the action sequences, but those spaces are filled with the personalities of the Twins, like Sarah's fascination with bad horror films, and human boys, while Shaun's need to get blind drunk, so he's not thinking about hot girls who are trying to seduce him. I've read a lot of Jim Butcher's "Harry Dresden" books which delve into the whole world of the supernatural and I think Sharon Stevens book stand right up there with Butcher. As an author Stevens writes with a cool, easy tone that you can get into, and makes you want to follow along, and she takes a few turns you wont expect, that will push you, like me, right into her next book Demon Divided. So take my advice, pick a copy and start reading.
Blood Bound is the first book in the series about twin demon trackers Shaun and Sarah. From the start we get thrown right into action and I gotta say there isn't a dull moment in this book. Shaun and Sarah have polar opposite personalities and the banter between them is quite funny. It made me laugh out loud several times and I don't remember that last time that happened when I read a book.
Being a demon tracker is a job for Shaun and Sarah, something they get paid for and were born to do it. But unlike Sarah, Shaun hasn't yet accepted his duty. I think it's safe to say that Shaun was my favorite character. Don't get me wrong, Sarah was awesome and a total baddass, but Shaun's sour puss personality and dry sense of humor was a fantastic combination.
So many things happened in the first book that if I dwell on them, I'll take away the fun of reading the book. The only thing that kept me from adding the extra star was the romance part. I'm a sucker for romance. You can totally see that when you read my book. There was a great, great opportunity here in the romance department and I was sad that it wasn't more developed. I wished that the pace had slowed down a bit so we could get more into the romance aspect. I mean, I wanted to root for Sarah and ... (I won't mention his name so not to spoil it). But the revelation that Sarah loved him came out of nowhere. By the end of the book I think I liked the vampire better.
Overall, great book I will definitely be reading the next one.
Blood Bound is a witty and action-packed paranormal debut by author Sharon Stevenson. Set in an alternative universe in which supernatural entities have escaped through a void to our world, the story follows twin demon trackers Shaun and Sarah Gallows as they take on all manner of dangerous supernatural entities, from vampires to witches.
Attractive Sarah is reckless, always running into danger, whereas her less-confident, glass-eyed sibling plays the part of sidekick, suppressing his true potential. The two work well as a team, but they seem to have met their match when they encounter another demon tracker who has been torturing innocent supernaturals for fun– and Shaun, against his will, falls madly in love with her. Now Shaun is being stalked by a hallucination of the person he has to kill, who he fears may be his soul mate. Suddenly their lives become very complicated, and there’s more than one evil scheme at work…
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Blood Bound jumps right into the action and never stops, but it never gets repetitive. The witty banter between the siblings, the great characterisation, and the fascinating alternative world kept me turning the pages. A thoroughly entertaining and fast-paced read, this is highly recommended for any fans of the paranormal.
4.5 from this reader. Shaun and Sarah are 19 yr old twin demon hunters. And from the beginning to the end this story is packed FULL of action and adventure. It was a little lower than a 5 because I felt it was a little OVER developed at some points. And a little less in others. A little felt a little too long. Aside from that I really enjoyed this book. I LOVED the dynamics and the fact that the twins complimented each other. They were separate with separate issues and abilities. Shaun complimented Sarahs fighting, and it carries over into their lives outside work too. Typically twins are often a little TOO "close" for my comfort. Not in this. They are very separate very different people. Sarah has not only accepted her powers but thrives in them. Shaun on the other hand really digs his heels in about accepting his. Yet despite this they still worked it on almost every page. There is so much going on that if I say too much more about anything, Ill give something away.
Blood Bound by the talented Sharon Stevenson reminded me very much of the True Blood TV series but instead of sunny Bon Temps the action takes place in rainy, atmospheric Scotland.
Sarah and Shaun are wise cracking, junk food eating, hard drinking twins who have inherited the role of demon hunters. I laughed out loud at some of the quips and retorts between brother and sister as they rid the world of troublesome vampires, meddling witches and local fairies.
In a couple of places, the pace was so fast I had to do a double take! The sarcastic siblings’ sense of humour is worth 5 stars on its own!
A cleverly written book that will appeal to anyone who likes their YA fiction with a bit of edge!
I want to start off by saying I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book, and didn't want it to end. Sadly, it did, though. I have so many more questions and I really hope the author writes a sequel to this book, because I want to know more about Shaun and Sarah Gallows. This book was full of action and romance, however nothing over the top. I highly recommend this book to those who like supernatural, romance, and/or action books... this book has it all and you won't regret it.
Blood Bound (Gallows #1) by Sharon Stevenson is an exciting fantasy from page one! It has nonstop action, suspense, fighting, a mystery, fun dialogue, and much more in one book. It does end leading into book 2, so not quite a complete closure but enough to be satisfied. The characters are developed and plot very good and complex. The twins, Shaun and Sarah, our main characters are flawed and likeable at the same time. An enjoyable read. Look forward to book 2.
I loved this book. I really loved this book. Faeries, vampires, witches, demons, the fallen...there's a supernatural entity for the whole family. The characters are well developed. Dark humor present, which I love also. It did get confusing in a few points jumping from one point of view to another, but nothing major.
‘Blood Bound’ is an action-packed adventure narrated by twin demon hunters, Shaun and Sarah Gallows. It is the first book in a series featuring these kick-ass 19 year olds and the demons, witches, vampires, and ghosts they interact with.
An excellent choice for fans of supernatural shows like Buffy and Angel!
I’m not sure how to feel about this book. On one end it was just BLAH, on the other end I found some of the differences between her paranormals and the average paranormals you read about very intriguing.
A cheeky voice with unique twists hits the UF world in this intro into Sharon Stevenson's Gallows' series. If you're looking for a witty page-turning ride, hold on to your stakes and duster because this one will leave your heart pounding and a manic smile on your face.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
Shaun and Sarah are twin demon trackers. I like Shaun's character off the bat. And Sarah is a great character too. Love girls that kick butt...... I immediately do not like Ben or Melissa. But I am still not sure what to really think of Ben.
I gather this sibling duo is used to dispensing justice on demonic "presences" i.e. vampires or other dark demonic things. Shaun doesn't dig the dirty job nearly as much as Sarah. After the interesting encounter with Melissa at an unauthorized stop Sarah is thinking maybe Shaun has met his mate. Only problem is she's a fairy torturing psychopath. But when Shaun shares the information and the girls name with his mum she is quick to warn him away from her no matter the draw he feels or to punish her for what she did to that fairy. It leaves Shaun wondering what could possibly be so huge about the untouchable psycho. Something is off and Sarah senses maybe Melissa isn't her twins mate. She starts to follow a trail filled with mystery and pain along the way. Her brother easily along for the ride and eager to be rid of his draw to the aluring and evil demon tracker Melissa. It all unravels with twists and turns and revelations. Every time a question in my mind was answered another replaced it! It kept me interested all the way through and wanting more when I finished! And wondering.......
This book was given in exchange for an honest review This story has a great plot line and interesting characters. Sarah and Shaun Gallows are twin demon trackers whose job it is to track down and eliminate supernatural creatures. While out on an ordinary job the twins meet up with Melissa, the first tracker their own age that they have ever met. She draws them in to a web of lies and magic that they try desperately to unravel, especially since it appears Shaun may be bound to Melissa. Once you think you may understand what is happening a new twist appears and you are left wondering what is going on once again. The book is full of amazing characters, both main and supporting. Sarah is feisty and impetuous, always running in to situations without thinking but she has a great heart and is always trying to save everyone. Shaun is her complete opposite; quiet and brooding, he is always trying to save Sarah from herself. Next throw in Dev and Ray, two human guys that are completely in love with Sarah and best friends. They certainly throw wrenches in Sarah's plans by both competing for her attention. There are a few other characters that are a key part of the story but I don't want to give away any more. All of the characters are so well written it is impossible not to love all of them. Even Melissa grew on me towards the end. She is the perfect popular, rich girl with a whole lot of psycho thrown in. She is truly one crazy character. I really only disliked two things about the book, the language and the sexuality. I am a pretty conservative reader and tend to steer clear of any book that has more than PG-13 type content. This book contains an exorbitant amount of language and sexuality runs rampant throughout the book. Despite having a very hard time with some of the content I was still drawn in to the story and I am now debating on whether or not to read book two. I desperately want to know what happens, because there are so many unanswered questions at the end of book one, but I am not sure I want to deal with the content to find out. If you don't mind this kind of content or are willing to overlook it then this would be a great book for you. One other thing that I should mention is that the author is from the UK and the book takes place in Scotland so much of the book contains slang words and phrases. Most of the time I was able to infer the meaning from the context but there were several times that I was just stumped. I did not come across any slang that inhibited me from understanding what was going on in the story but if you are the kind of person that must know everything that is said in a book you may need to look up the meaning of some of the slang.
Shaun and Sarah are brother and sister—twins. They are unique, they have supernatural abilities, they are demon trackers. Only nineteen years old, their job is to hunt down vampires, witches, and other paranormal beings and exterminate them. But they didn’t bargain for Melissa and the havoc she creates, and they certainly didn’t bargain for her connection with Shaun: a bond that could leave him dead.
Blood Bound, by Sharon Stevenson, is the first book in the Gallows trilogy, a series of books focusing on the Gallows twins Shaun and Sarah. She is the strong one, utilizing her special abilities to the fullest in their job as demon trackers, whereas Shaun neglects his, allowing his sister to do the work while he hangs back, or gets drunk on vodka in the local pub. They make a good team, and it’s their opposite nature that works well. Ms. Stevenson does a great job of getting the reader into the head of both characters, shifting POV effortlessly throughout the book, allowing us accompany them on their vampire hunts as if we’re sitting on their shoulders.
The prose is crisp and clear, allowing the plot to flow at a nice pace. There are a number of British spellings and words used (and given that the author is from Scotland this is no surprise) which might annoy or confuse American readers, but that’s really what gives this book a unique feel. And besides, Europeans have to put up with their way of spelling things, why shouldn’t it work the other way, right?
There are enough action sequences in this book to keep things exciting, and a touch of romance for both Shaun and Sarah that ultimately gives them something worth fighting for. If there was one factor with the storyline that grated, it was the constant back and forth from demon killing jobs to home. It happens often: they catch a train to do a job (or to try and unravel the mysteries that drag the two of them into conflict with Melissa), and then they catch a train home again. There’s plenty of ordering of pizza, too, which is probably okay because they’re only nineteen.
But, at the end of it all, this is not a problem, because although it can get a bit ‘oh, another train journey?’ it certainly doesn’t detract from the story as a whole, or from the pacing of the plot which is probably the most important thing. Blood Bound is an extremely enjoyable read, from start to finish, and it’s a read good enough to make this reader get book two in the trilogy.
***I was given an ARC for a true and honest review***
I really loved this book as it had something for everybody. I went on a next to non-stop read fest because I didn't want to stop reading the book and was really sad when it ended. I like the twins their funny, snarky, and slightly irreverent with regard to people or situations. Their lives are defined by their bloodlines. Being a demon tracker is what they are but it also defines who they are.
What an interesting life these twins have to live kicking butt and taking names. Their job is to keep innocents from harm by the numerous monsters that share the human world. Ms. Stevenson has built an interesting world that is vivid and populated with any number of interesting characters.
Shaun is the quieter of the two twins. His tall height, glass-eye, and slightly scarred face makes him off putting to people. Shaun isn't the people person that his sister Sarah is. He is holding back by not using his powers to their fullest like his sister. His life it seems leaves much to be desired which makes him slightly sad and low keyed.
Sarah is the in your face twin. She is pretty, drew man to her like honey draws flies, and is a force to be reckoned with whether its business or pleasure. Unlike her brother she embraces her powers and uses them without hesitation. Sarah involves Ben a young man she met at a prom after completing a "job". She asks him to keep a watch of a crazy pyscho demon hunter Sarah wants to kill and Shawn is strangely attracted to. She is the thorn in her brother's side as she is constantly calling him ridiculous names or lecturing him about not using his powers as he should.
Things go wrong from there and the twins believe that there is more to everything that has happened to them in the last few days. I can't wait for the next book to see what the twins find out and how it will affect their job and lives.
There was a cool build of a new world with familiar supernatural villains. The Gallow twins are demon hunters and in that the story has plenty of action, and mayhem.
Sarah and Shaun are twins and like ying and yang. They're dedication to one another and fun arguments were entertaining. They're so different, yet very much alike, especially in their new found personal problems.
Given assignments, they find themselves in the middle of a mystery that involves a gorgeous redhead, blood bonds, and the possibility of soulmates. I did enjoy the action in this book. They had a lot to face and I didn't find it repetitive or boring as each new fight was usually against something new. Vampires were a big focus, but not the only evil thing that lurks in the world. As demon hunters they are superhuman in many ways with enhanced senses, they're also under the thumb of a higher power called the Council, which complicates things, but keeps the reader interested.
I love that it's set in Scotland and had to look up what the heck crisps were. The twins were wonderful as a team, and as individuals. How they face the changes in their personal lives affects not only one of them, but sometimes both of them in minor ways. Sarah especially will have some problems ahead. I did find that some of the subplots were drawn out and hindered the progression a bit, but this could be just me. The overall story was quite entertaining and the main storyline and characters were fun to get to know. Despite the twins claiming not to be human, they had some very human issues and emotions, which made them relatable.
CONCLUSION
I liked the two main characters. Sarah and Shaun make a fantastic duo. They're also distinct individuals with their own personal problems. I think urban fantasy fans would love this story!
This is an action packed story of supernatural villains where twins hunt demons giving you lots of mayhem and action that keeps you entertained with a page turning read. Sarah and Shaun keep you laughing through on the story with their arguments, as you come to know them you will find they are very different but yet so much alike. They have the same issues as normal family members which makes this a believable story and one you can relate to.
These twins have big assignments which gives the reader and action pack fast past read as they take on a new one involving a redhead and blood bonds. They have to deal with Vampires and other supernaturals. You will not find a boring part in this book as they deal with complications with the higher power the Council. I think you will find even though the twins are supernaturals they still have human emotion, they are really for the most part just like us just with a little more power.
The author gives a very entertaining read with a great plot and subplots. The twins work well as a team but you will find they are individuals each having their own issues which will effect one or both. Decision made can affect both or just one, choices will have to be made which will lead to problems with Sarah. I thought this was a good suspenseful read that really draws the reader in. I did feel at times there was more info than we needed sometimes less is better. However it doesn’t take away from the story which pulled me in starting with action almost from the first page. I feel most will love this fast pace action pack thrilling read. I hope you will pick it up and be taking to another world of wonder, excitement and the thrill of the chase. ****************************
FREE COPY PROVIDED BY AUTHOR FOR HONEST REVIEW. I don't normally leave a review before completion but I have to tell everyone that this book is great. I haven't had much reading time this last week but I can't even insert a short story for the shortened reading times as I usually do. This book has me captivated so that every little bits of time I have I must see what's next until I'm dragged away for another appointment. Although the twins don't seem to be very much alike, you can still feel their acceptance of their differences and support for each other. With as much as is going on, you start out a little confused, but soon you'll see it seems to be intentional as bit by bit things become more'put together'. The subject and characters are realistic without that 'too good to be true' vibe typically found in paranormal fantasy writings. It is easier to relate and connect with them. I will update this review when I finish, but I really can't wait to get back to it. Happy reading people. UPDATE: HOLY COW!!! And I thought the first third was good. But this goes WAAAY BEYOND even that. One gut wrenching twist after another. Rip my heart out why don't ya! Fortunately you put it back in with that first chapter sneak peak of Demon Divided. I was sad, distraught, crushed, upset, confused right at the end. This author is so good, I actually was still seriously considering checking out the rest of the series. THEN... I read the sneak peek at the end. OH PLEASE can I have more?! was all I had left at that point. Glad to have a break after being put through my paces, but WOW! I REALLY can't wait to get ahold of the rest of this one. I won't give any spoilers, but advice... GET IT!!! Thank you Mrs. Stevenson! I don't know how you do it, but Boy am I glad you did.
First off, if you like urban and modern fantasy, read this book. Second, if you don't like fantasy but want to give it a chance with a new author and a new series, read this book.
Other reviewers I've seen have immediately pointed out that fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will like this book. And while I agree, it was not the first thing that occurred to me. The more I read about the sister and brother team in Blood Bound, Sarah and Shaun, the more I was more inclined to link it to a current show on the air, Supernatural, and for all the right reasons. Stevenson wields her writing, action and sarcasm skills with bravado.
The pacing is fast - Stevenson gleefully throws you into the action and hopes you can swim - as you fall into the middle of the twins' monster hunting lives. Stevenson wisely assumes you will get the gist of her world, explaining only what needs to be explained, even in the moments where she deviates into one of her own creations or an interpretation of other lore (vampires, demons, etc.), in much the same manner an author like Terry Brooks would do. What the characters can do and why they do it evolves with the story as needed. It helps keep the plot moving, the narrative fresh, and the characters and their struggles front and centre.
These books are going to catch on. Glad to see that - at the time of this review - Book 2 in her Gallows series, Demon Divided, has just become available.
Now, if I could just figure out why her website includes the name "moonfruit"...
4/5 (If you're a big fan of Buffy-like stories, you can probably rate it a 5.)
