A down-on-his luck screenwriter. The mythical warrior Beowulf. A harem of hot warrior women and monster girls. Joining forces to take down the bad guys in modern-day Los Angeles. Wait. What?
Adam Fraser's coming home from an unsuccessful movie pitch when he nearly collides with Beowulf and a duo of powerful warrior women who’ve been catapulted forward in time by an evil alchemist named Mossheart. Realizing that each can help the other, they set off on an epic journey across Hollywood to track down the alchemist before he accomplishes his ultimate the resurrection of the monster Grendel. What could go wrong? Lots. Tons. A crapload of things could and do go wrong, but along the way, Adam builds his harem, grows in strength and skills, gathers material for an incredible movie, and discovers how to defeat villains and become an expert um…swordsman.
would it surprise you to learn that this book’s intended for those over the age of 18 who like fresh takes on old stories, sexy monster women, shapeshifters, adrenaline-fueled action, cool snarky characters, and lots of haremy (yes, that’s a real word) adult situations? Probably not, so if you like those things, and I’m guessing you do, come and get swung with The Swordsman!
Beowulf, hero of Scandinavian legends an fighter of the monster Grendel get's transported to modern day Los Angeles along with his two beautiful companions. Enter our main character Adam Fraser an out of luck screen writer who stumbles on them, believes them to be actors and somehow gets stuck with them as they fight the evil sorcerer Mossheart.... oh and it's a harem novel.
If it sounds as if, I'm not that enthusiastic it's because I'm not. The story just kind of happend and nowhere dit I feel invested or cared for any of the characters. Perhaps it's the pulp element that bothers me, but overall this really didn't catch my attention. The characters felt stale and the plot carried little weight in the overall feel. Lots of things happend, people died, but nothing much had any impact on me as the reader.
Overall this novel wasn't for me as it turned out, but neither was it any good despite that so... yeah
This novel never quite captured my interest. The basic plot—Beowulf pursuing an evil sorcerer into modern day Hollywood—had potential. Where else could people who don’t belong in this time have a chance of fitting in than the land of dreams and imagination. Unfortunately, the characters were barely two dimensional. The bad guy just wants to kill people. Archer actually realizes this at one point and has his henchman question his motivations. (i.e. Don’t you want to have something left to rule?) But the answer was “no” for no good reason. He’s just bad. The good guy, Beowulf, just wants to kill the bad guy. That’s okay. The modern day people who get caught up in the mess really never made a lot of sense to me whether they joined with the good guy or the bad guy. This novel just sort of happened without pulling me in.
A fun little book, goofy as hell, and very, very pulp fiction. The adventure story parts of it are great, as our hapless Hollywood screenwriter hero joins up with Beowulf and his friendly sword-babes to fight Grendel and an evil wizard in modern day LA. It's punctuated with hilariously out of place sex scenes that screech the story progress to a full stop every time, but overall I hod a good time with it. I'd have rated it higher if it weren't so totally a "Book 1" and had a more complete ending that didn't so obviously scream, "Get the next book if you want the rest of the story."
Imagining the scenes that the author describes in the book all I can see is it playing out like a B grade move (like the Dolf Lungren classic ‘Masters of the Universe’). It was a fun read with a little bit of sex to add the sprinkle of spice. I think I will end up reading the second book. It might do better in a more ‘fantasy’ rather than the urban setting of this one, with characters who have been already defined.
I found it very interesting and I am waiting for the next book. Possibilities abound for the team to swing trough more adventures in different period of time.
Awesome work Zack Archer I love this book from start to finish the characters are well written and informed the whole idea of this book was great a must too read 5 stars can't wait to buy the next book
A quick read. Not fantastic, but fun enough. The humor and writing ebbs and flows, parts displayed artful writing and razor sharp humor, others chunked along like a rusted out Honda with two flat tires a gammy cylinder. But, it was still a fun yarn.
Wasn’t sure what to expect with this one but actually turned out the concept was pretty awesome. Great fun read that I very much enjoyed. Looking forward to book 2
Entertaining premise well-executed for the genre. Semi-mythical characters in current day LA isn't exactly historical fiction, but this is a brisk and diverting read.
