Dutch Captain William Janszoon came in the vessel “DUIFKEN” in 1606. Between 1606 & 1644, Dutch sailors had landed at least several times. Such as Dirk Van Hartog who in 1616 put a gold plaque on a 9ft stake in the ground at Shark Bay Western Australia and named this new found land “NEW HOLLAND” then sailed off.
Abel Tasman in 1642. In the 1680s and 1699, William Dampier came here. In 1770 Captain James Cook came, which opened the way for the first fleet In 1788. (refer to story 8 The Hemp & Convict Colony ) These are just the tip of the Ice Berg.
