Grabbed this book on a whim before boarding a flight, and truthfully couldn't have been more surprised at home amazing this story was. The writing from the very first page captured me and I actually found myself emotional and at a loss for words during parts of the book. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a personal story, as well as anyone who loves a good love story amid war. Definitely one of the best books I've ever read.

Not sure why I can’t review just the novel (I didn’t read a chapter by chapter analysis).... Anyway, it’s a 5* for sure. The voice, the story, the character development, the telling..... not an easy read but definitely a worthwhile one.

This book could be one of the fastest reads I've ever had. The lady at The Bookworm in Edwards, Colorado warned me that it was not that well written, but that despite this fact, the story was definitely worthwhile reading and I totally concur. This is a novel based on a true story and it conjures up all kinds of new questions about World War II. The setting is in Italy, a place that we seldom hear about in connection with the war. The hero Pino is a complex and interesting character whose adventures are unfathomable, and the outcome itself is perplexing. It's definitely a manual for how to survive under the most brutal of circumstances.

WOW! I loved this and it made me cry. This was a biography written in a fiction novel format which sounds weird but I loved it! Pino Lella was an amazing human and I feel so privileged to be able to read his story. I wish there were more WW2 stories of everyday people written like this.

I enjoyed this book a lot. First I could imagine the setting as I have visited Milan several times. Having read a lot of books about Ww2 and the holocaust, I didn’t know much about the war in Italy and Mussolini. The Catholic Church’s role in helping Jews escaped which was enlightening.

I loved this book. One of the best one's I've read in awhile. I have been to many area's in this book which reading it gave me a image to base the story off of. I can't imagine going through what he did. Especially seeing things that he witnessed. This book brought me tears. I'm not sure Ill be able to watch the movie version.

I did not get this book with chapter by chapter analysis, but it doesn't matter. I thought this book was wonderful. I had read the author's other book, the last screen Valley, and loved that 1 as well.

Both books are set during WWII and both are fictionalized account sells of little known (or, in my case, unknown events and/or events from the war. I've read a lot of WWII fictional books but Sullivan's books are outstanding. They are about real people and Sullivan interviewed those people and/or their survivors for the books. So I believe his books are largely factual but read like fiction. So very good!

This book focuses on a young man, not very political, who is recruited by the resistance. And it is set in Italy so mussolini is a bit player, albeit important, to the story.

I have only one criticism of these books: the last chapter or so is actually an epilogue that takes place years later and has a totally different style - more reportorage. Knowing that for the second, I did not find it as jarring. So, really a 4.75 for that harring ending if you are not expecting it. Just the same, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan is a coming-of-age novel set in Milan during and after World War II. Nosco’s Summary and Analysis of the book is a comprehensive look at the book, including a summary, discussion of setting and plot, and analysis of the characters and symbols the author uses to move the story along as well as convey the meaning of the narrative. Though it contained a number of typos and grammatical gaffes, this was an excellent way to get a sense of the book before making a decision whether or not to buy it. At 99 cents (free for those enrolled in Kindle Unlimited) it’s also a money-saver.

I didn't read the chapter by chapter analysis but this was the only option for the actual book. It was by far one of the best I've ever read. I laughed and cried multiple times and it's written so well you fell apart of the story. This is historical fiction but the characters are based on real people and some events that actually happened. Historical fiction.

I thought I had read every type of WW2 story...but this real story was more riveting than any fiction. I feel I finally might have a small idea of what it might have been like to live through that time...the story just came to life. Highly recommend. I especially love the epilog that shared the later part of this man's life. Read!

A really interesting story. An amazing person. I could never have been so brave. The book is written somewhat simplistically but definitely holds your interest throughout the book. A good look at Milan during WWII and the resistance movement there.

Wow. This book was beyond horrifying. Based on the true story of Pino Lella during World War 2. My mind can’t even comprehend the atrocities that happened. A must read for everyone. We cannot forget history.

A truly wonderful book. It is hard to believe one person could experience so many horrific events and still have such an amazing life. Inspiring, yet horrifying to recall what happened during World War II. Italy’s experience is not quite as well known as Germany’s, but definitely a good read.

Beautiful book! Very interesting but a little long and boring... This was not the most captivating book to read, but I believe that everyone should read this book as the story is wholesome and inspiring.

Very good. Maybe too long as I was going full tilt, but I got sidetracked and was slow to get back to the book. I did finish it and was quite surprised to read that it was based on real events.
