Magic paints a target on Everly’s back, and her hunters won’t stop until she belongs to them...
As Everly attempts to control her powers, everything else in Veil Rock comes unhinged. Now, there’s a new a gift over-riding all of her senses, and its insatiable need to be fed drowns out everything else.
There’s only one person who can help her overcome the magic’s hunger. He’s more than happy to oblige... but he’s the last person Everly wants to turn to. Especially about this.
But, she may be left with no other choice as more supernaturals begin to realize how unique her powers are. The white witches are the only ones who know exactly what Everly is capable of, and they will do whatever it takes to keep that secret sacred.
Even if that means Everly’s death.

Ainsley Shay avoids insanity by living mostly in the fiction world. She believes surrounding herself with positive people, and strives for balance in everything. She owns more jeans with rips and holes than without; and has recently found the magic of patches. For her, reading or writing the perfect sentence is better than the smoothest piece of dark chocolate melting in her mouth. She is a deltiologist for pure enjoyment, not for the study of. She longs to move north one day, even though she hates the cold. (Go figure!) So, for now, she continues to live in warm south Florida with her incredible husband, three beautiful daughters, and two lazy cats. (We won’t mention the dog.)
I know this book answered several of the questions in my mind about what was going on. We know more about Veil Rock, Everly’s gifts, and the situation she faces. But I still feel like I have more questions than answers, even after everything we learn in this book. And at this point, I don’t have the faintest clue who genuinely has Everly’s best interests at heart and who’s motivated only to achieve their own goals. Who’s being honest in their treachery and who’s lying in their friendship? I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
Great to be back in Veil Rock, "seeing" all the old familiar characters and some new. So many weird things happen, very intriguing, keeps turning pages to find out what happens next. Who should Everly trust and who should she run from. Big things happen and danger is lurking everywhere. I love the mystery and the unexpected elements in the story line. Well written and very entertaining. Cant wait to go back to Veil Rock for the big final. What will happen in less than 30 days. Who will be sacrificed.
Everly Shade is definitely not your normal young person, and neither is the place she lives a normal seaside town. Everly's surrounded by supernatural beings, all trying to ensure their own immortality, by sacrificing one with powers. Everly has more powers than most, but is just learning what to do with them. There are those saying they can help, but can she trust them? Another remarkable story from Ms Shay. Her gift of unfolding a tale, holding the reader in her palm, whilst her words spin a web of wondrous creatures, in magical worlds.
The second book in this series. Everly is discovering more and more about herself and the Warlock of Veil rock. Her passion with Dragan deepens but will their love be stronger then to stay alive? This book is very intense, full of love, hate, cravings and sadness. Also a girl named Kendra shows up and she is not an immortal, what does she want from Everly? It doesn't happen a lot and book 1 was already amazing but this book surpasses the first one. Start reading I know you'll love it
Ashes and Shadows was hard to review as I enjoy some of the characters, but some simply annoy me. Since this is subjective, and I think other readers may to share my feelings, I'll try not to let that influence the rating. The main character, Everly, was my favorite, and I loved the overall story line, so I'll consider continuing the series and hope all the characters grow on me with time and exposure.
It's like the writer isn't writing a full book. I understand cliffhanger but I wouldn't even say that's what the end was. I have read the first two books and honestly still don't understand what's going on. I'm done but good luck to the next reader. Honestly the first story had the base of a great story.
Brilliant story! picked up from book 1. We start having a few questions answered. Meet lots more characters. I fully enjoyed book 2 and highly recommend reading this series.
Ashes and Shadows is a young adult, urban fantasy that has a magnificent cast, lots of intrigue and plenty of peril. It is written first person and entirely from Everly, the heroines, POV. This book picks up pretty much where book #1 ended, and continues the story of magic, mystery and mayhem.
This is an author who's work I enjoy, she spins excellent magical tales but a modern day setting, merging the two into one massively entertaining read. Book #1, Echoes to Ashes totally drew me into a story that I very much wanted to continue with. This is a series of books, none can be read as a stand alone and they do need to be read in order.
Everly is discovering more and more things, both about herself and about the immortal beings who are so very interested in her. There are a few new people to meet in this book, along with some surprising discoveries to be made and increasing threats to face.
I did find that I was having to remind myself that Everly is only a teenager, particularly at those times when she seemed very trusting of the wrong people. Personally I wouldn't trust any of them, but I guess in order to get the answers she needs, Everly has to trust someone.
The writing is executed well, making the story easy to follow and understand. The pace was nicely balanced, holding your attention without moving too quickly, and there were plenty of twists and turns in the plot. Characters clearly have their own motivations, only revealing information to Everly when it suits them. They often leave her in ignorance and then get offended by her unwitting actions!
I flew through this, devouring each word, page and chapter whilst being totally riveted by the story. I am massively looking forward to reading the final book and discovering the truth hidden behind all the smoke and mirrors that the immortals dazzle our heroine with.
This book is suitable for teens through to adults, it has a very mild amount of romance but kissing is as far as it goes. If fantasy/urban fantasy/paranormal reads are your thing then this is a series I would recommend to you.
