Series: The Naughty Girls #3.5
Publication Date:

I did enjoy the story, but if you are looking for historical accuracy to the time period, you will be grossly disappointed. You just have to suspend your beliefs to make the story work for you. The heroine is the daughter and sister of the village blacksmith and yet she’s going to end up with an Earl. I’m sorry, but to me, that just isn’t believable. Had she been the impoverished daughter of some local gentry or something I MIGHT be able to buy it – but the blacksmith’s sister and the Earl just doesn’t do it for me. They also do not adhere to the correct forms of address in this book. So, while I liked the story, it was not believable for the time period – 1814.

I did like Elinor Conley who has the far-fetched dream of becoming a lady. She is so totally naive that it I unbelievable. As she looks out the window of their small home, she sees a flaxen-haired gentleman getting his horse shod at her brother’s smithy. He’s quite an eye full and she just has to find out more about him. As she reads about him in the gossip columns, she devises a plan to meet him – and when she does, he’ll fall instantly in love with her and they’ll marry.

Grantham Wendell, Earl of Chilford, doesn’t deal well with Christmas. He lost his much-loved younger sister at Christmas time five years ago. Now, he’s all alone in the world – no family at all – not even distant cousins. So, to fill the hours and try to forget each Christmas, he has what is basically a month-long orgy at his home in Yorkshire. He fills it with debauched, rakish male friends and light-skirts. However, he’s becoming tired of the whole thing. So, when an ancient, rickety coach plows into his kitchen, ruining the hearth, he is surprised to find that there was a lone woman in the coach. She is injured and the servants have placed her in the servant’s quarters in order to protect her from the debauchery going on in the house. Again, suspend your beliefs. Why would they think she was anything but a servant? She was I a cheap threadbare gown – definitely NOT the gown of a lady, but she was dismayed when she thought they had mistaken her for a servant.

The dialogue was witty and the characters were lively and interesting, but the plot just left a lot to be desired. The ‘love at first sight’ just fell flat for me – I didn’t feel the passion. Then, it just ended too abruptly.

The narrator, Marian Hussey, has a lively, compelling interpretation of the voices of the characters and you can hear the wit and liveliness in her voice as the banter takes place. She definitely made a less than stellar story worth listening to.

The Cheer in Charming the Earl is a 2013 Intrepid publication. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher and Netgalley.

Elinor Conley is still in search of a husband. When she spies Grantham Wendell, The Earl of Chelford, she just knows he is the one.
So, now she must somehow put herself in his path. Her scheme could ruin her reputation, cause her to lose the Earl, and maybe even her life.
But Elinor is shocked to learn the Earl was spending his holiday with women of a certain ilk. The Earl becomes suspicious of Elinor and becomes convinced she is after his money.
What Elinor doesn't know is that the Earl is suffering from grief and has not allowed himself to really enjoy life in many years.
Elinor is innocent and her motives are pure, but can the two of them put their preconceived notions to rest or will outside forces come between them?

This Regency period Christmas Novella is part of the Naughty Sisters series. A delightful Christmas themed romance. Overall a B+

Elinor and Grantham meet under unusual circumstances but can they find love?

When Grantham stops to have is horse’s shoes replaced he is seen by Elinor (the sister of the smith and sister-in-law of Delilah). She falls in love with him and plots to meet him.

She damages the wheel of the carriage taking her to visit her aunt and causes it to crash into Gratham’s kitchen wall.

Grantham is still mourning the death of his sister in a fire (he feels he should have warned her about life experiences).

Elinor and Grantham eventually sort out their difficulties- this is a shorter tale so things have to be developed faster than in a longer novel but I still enjoyed the book.

Interesting Regency Period Novella about Elinor💃, a naive country lass who falls in love 💘with young Grantham🐺🍆⛲, the Earl of Chelford.

He brought his 🐎horse into her brother's forge to replace a shoe and she was instantly smitten.
Chelford🐺🍆⛲ has been known as a rake since his sisters death, but Elinor💃 doesn't know it. She contrives to appear at his estate and gets a crude and rude awakening!

This is a short Adult Romance💕 that can be read in an hour or two.

I actually read this e-novella immediately after I read A Game of Persuasion and The Art of Ruining a Rake , and, I will say this: I wasn't sold on the premise of The Cheer in Charming an Earl.

I have to remind myself that Elinor's story is part of the Naughty Girls series, and so I had expected her to break the mold, to break barriers, and to be something extra-ordinary -- but I thought she set her sights a bit too low when she applied her cleverness and charm to catch Grantham Wendell attention. Does Earl Chelford merit the attention? I'm not so sure, and I don't think Elinor knows it, either -- she decided to "set her cap" on him because he was single, and an earl.

This, I think, is this novella's problem: it doesn't really show how our hero and heroine moved from strangers to friends, and, eventually, to lovers. The love story unfolds during Grantham's yearly Christmas celebration, which Elinor (literally) crashes. What follows are scenes where Grantham's friends try to shock Elinor with their hedonism, but, are, instead, charmed by Elinor's refreshing innocence. I like the contrast between the hero's worldliness and the heroine's naivete and how the author emphasizes the darkness within Grantham and the light that is Elinor. Grantham's character is more developed, and the author does a good job of portraying his tiredness and jadedness -- and it explains why he finds being with Elinor so liberating and new, but I wish there had been more between the two.

...For years, he'd relied on his friends for distraction. He was beginning to realize he'd been hiding like coward, shirking responsibility because it hurt too much to make mistakes. That had done nothing but prove darkness begat darkness. Now he knew brightness did exist in the world. It simply wasn't in this room.

(It's really hard to explain, but I felt something was missing between the first meeting and the eventual declaration of love.) I guess that's the trouble when you come from reading something so dramatic as The Art of Ruining a Rake , because I was expecting the same kind of intensity with Grantham and Elinor's story.

On the whole, I thought this was a good story, and a good addition to the series.

3.5 Lovely Stars!

This is book 3 1/2 in The Naughty Girls Series.

This was such a cute novella. Ms. Locke weaves a romantic tale with witty banter, romance, action, and drama all into one tightly bound package. Locke delivers a fast-paced, sexy story that will leave you with a smile.

The Cheer in Charming an Earl is a short, sweet holiday read. Elinor is a mixture of innocence and brazenness in a compact package. An amazing love story just wish it was a little longer.

It isn't often I read a book without reading the blurb. This is one such book and I am not doing to do it again any time soon. Regency romances are one of my favourite genres, so when I got this book on Amazon, I blindly started reading it and I should have been warned about the story with the summary included at the start of the book. But did I pay attention to it? No! and I paid for it.

The beginning was quite adventurous with Elinor being determined enough to go after what she wanted, that is, Lord Chelfold. This was quite fine and even her disastrous plan to get his attention was quite funny. What didn't go with the regency times was the vast status difference between the protagonists. This would never go with the time period how much ever I wished it so. Another big plot hole, according to me, was how the hero, Grantham fell for Elinor suddenly and with such force. I understand the concept of love at first sight but this didn't feel like that. Another negative was Elinor's naivety. There is naivety which sounds cute and funny and then there's naivety which just looks like plain foolhardiness which was the case in this tale.

What I did find authentic with the times was the debauchery at Grantham's place. An air of ennui was always a part of the Regency and it added a feel for that era. But the way Grantham's past is entwined with it, also added to the plot quite well. Elinor's Aunt Millie's estrangement from her family because of her profession was also realistic as per the time frame. And add the fact that Gavin arrived to get Elinor back to the family also added to the plotline quite well. It was a rather short read and it fast forwarded to the end quickly and it felt hurried to me. It was as if the author wanted to end it and the hero had to make do with the heroine's reasons and decide that he can't let her go. There was no time to feel the love or the romance or the emotions of the characters.

In truth, I have never dissected a regency romance as much as this one and I feel quite bad for it. But it fell short on so many points, that I actually thought a lot on whether to write on it or not and to rate it 2.5 or 3. That's why I took so long to write my thoughts on the book. I am just saying the story could have been better. And I am not sure I would read the author's works further. I might once again try a new series of hers in the distant future, though I am not 100% sure.

My one line review : A short regency romance with lots of shortfalls.

Historical English romance with the sister of a blacksmith finding love with a titled rich guy.
All you have to do is throw in an identical twin (even a secret twin) and I'm going to give 3 stars. I have a fascination with twins and dealing with looking the same but not actually having the same personality.
Miss Elinor Conley falls in love (lust at first sight) Grantham Wendell, Lord Chelford, so she makes up the most preposterous carriage accident to make her own 'meet cute'. Nothing goes as planned, at that time there were a lot of carriage accident deaths so it is more then a little crazy that Elinor risks her life that way, but there is a cute HEA.
Short fluff romance.

When He Sees Her, He Thinks Her An Angel

Elinor is one of five daughters and one married son who is a blacksmith. She is pretty but there are no men of an age to marry in the small English town where they live. All have been called off to war. She is the second oldest daughter. One day a handsome man's horse throws a shoe and Elinor is sure
she can get his attention and they will match and can marry. Even though she only got is name an title, she was positive Grantham, Lord of Chelton is for her. The story only gets better from here. The two main. Characters are very likeable and real, most the others are real, but not so likeable. This book is an historical romance and if this is a genre you like ,you'll like this book.

The Cheer In Charming An Earl is a fun read by Emma Locke. This is a fairly quick read, a great choice for historical romance fans with limited time for reading. Ms Locke has delivered a well-written book. The characters are captivating and fun to read. Elinore and Grantham's story is a fast-paced romp loaded with drama, humor and spice. I enjoyed reading The Cheer In Charming An Earl and look forward to reading more from Ms Locke in the future. The Cheer In Charming An Earl is book 5 of The Naughty Girls Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read a free copy of this book that I received from InstaFreebie.

Elinor is nearly on the shelf and has no martial prospects in her little village. Then she sees Lord Grantham's beautiful profile from afar and decides she is in love with him. She contrives to have a carriage accident at his estate and is immediately invited to join him for Christmas. What she didn't realize was that Grantham spends every Christmas in a weeks-long bacchanal to avoid thinking about his late baby sister; he is embarrassed and discomfited to have a lady visit him while he has such debauched guests.

This was such fast-moving, reasonably-believable fun to read.

This series is full of plans and tricks for heroines - or heroes - to have their HEA.
This book here couldn't be different.

Elinor comes from a poor family. She knows that making a good marriage is almost impossible, so when a nobleman - an EARL, for Christ sakes! - stops at her brother blacksmith's shop, she soon articulates a plan to tie him to her.
A little extreme? Yes, but they are desperate times.

The book is short, funny and light reading.

Elinor is a naive young woman with her heart set on an Earl who doesn't know she exists. I found it pretty far fetched that Elinor's arrival would disrupt the Earl's naughty party, but found it entertaining that his friends found it like a game to act respectable. I almost felt like I started in the middle of a story, which may be because I haven't read the first books in the series. I did like Grantham and Elinor (once she stopped her fantasy) as characters.

This novella follows Delilah's second of five sisters-in-law, Elinor, as she attempts to gain the attention of an earl who she has become infatuated with. I thought the plot moved too quickly, with not enough room for realistic development. Elinor's behavior was a bit too childish in my opinion.

I dont otherwise read novellas but since it was the part of series i was curious. It is as the case is with novellas, it was too small to go deep into the plot but it was a satisfying read.

Infatuated with Lord Chelford, Elinor has a daring plan just to have an opportunity to get to know him better. Although the story is quite short, we're introduced to interesting main and supporting characters. A bit of melancholy, a bit naive exuberance all wrapped up in a charming story.

It is a short story, but sometimes it felt like something was missing, characters could have been more developed and the story could include more details. Not my favourite but is not bad either.
