A WAGER HE CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE Devil-may-care rogue Lord Darius Alexander can’t resist a wager. When a game of cards is suggested at the remote inn where he’s stopped for the night, he antes up his family’s savings, certain his Town bronze will give him the advantage. He never expects to lose his fortune to the irritatingly confident, uncommonly beautiful hoyden daring to play with the men. …Nor does he expect to lose his heart.
A WOMAN HE DOESN'T DESERVE TO WIN Caitlin Hart is known for her good sense. When a ridiculous reprobate tosses his savings onto the gaming table, she doesn’t hesitate to divest him of it. But Lord Dare won’t accept defeat like a gentleman. He suggests a compromise, and before long the handsome scoundrel is working back his losses on her small farm. But her neatly plowed fields might be too close for her heart’s content, for soon she finds herself wondering if she can dare him to stay forever when the last of his coin is tucked safely into his pocket.
Emma Locke is a USA Today Bestselling Author of smart, sensual Regency romances. Her current books make up the Scandalous Spinsters series, a double trilogy featuring three courtesans and three country hoydens who marry into the notorious Alexander family. She is also an engineer living in the Pacific Northwest, where she loves hiking with her dog, hot yoga and riding out the annual 330 days of rain.
To be completely honest, I'm astonished that I finished this. I've read and enjoyed other books in the series so saying that is disappointing. At 25%, I legit stood up from my couch, slammed my Nook down and walked away. I picked it back up later in the hopes that it got better. Minus some brief mildly charming exchanges, the story just continued in the same vein. I found nothing really redeeming about Lord Dare until the last part of the epilogue -.- He is a lazy, immature, compulsive gambler with a huge debt that he is paying back in an unusual way. He doesn't even want to change until he's faced with a really major, seemingly unavoidable consequence and even then the effort doesn't really seem to add value. Ms. Hart was infinitely more interesting as a woman landowner who enjoys gambling and whose neighbor is trying to swindle her from retaining her land. To me, it seems Dare's connection to Ms. Hart was largely and almost exclusively because she was the first person to ever expect different or more from him. That just did not jive for me. 90% of the book you feel like you're not dealing with a grown man. His growth is infinitesimal.
Sometimes falling in love defies all logic, but chemistry is chemistry and the chemistry between Caitlin and Dare often seems like a brew that could blow up at any moment. Emma Locke’s The Danger in Daring a Lady pits love against all odds, as one over-inflated dandy of a man falls for a woman with more backbone than he could ever dream to have.
We can safely say it was the luck of the draw that brought Lord Darius to his knees at the feet of a woman ahead of her time, managing her small farm on her own, and persevering against the odds that are stacked against her. He waged a bank note against her farm and lost. Now he must return home in disgrace, once again or learn what the pride of a job well done truly means. Meanwhile, her dismissals of his normally spot on charm makes him all the more eager to win her over, but what would a man of his “station” know about wooing a commoner? Follow along as Caitlin takes Dare to task, teaching him the fine art of integrity, hard work and caring from someone other than himself. Old habits die hard and Dare’s gambling is an illness, will he be willing to wager his heart on the no-nonsense Caitlin? Will she take his bet and perhaps raise the stakes?
Emma Locke has taken us back in time and brought together two equally charming characters, one with a sense of purpose and a work ethic we can applaud and one, who for all intents and purposes is a user, self-centered and grossly immature, using lies and his body to exist. Ahhh, but there is a reason Dare is the way he is and until he comes to terms and makes amends with those he has hurt, he has nothing to offer Caitlin except a willing and handsome body. Caitlin is the kind of woman to be proud to know, the kind one can look up to, but love is love and even a couple as strange as this can feel it. Will Caitlin be Dare’s salvation or will she kick the final leg of the stool out from under him?
It is a long journey to the end, filled with broken promises, too many vows to change without substance and definitely there is no strong alpha to look up to, or is there? Who says the alpha has to be a man?
I received this copy from the author, Emma Locke in exchange for my honest review.
Series: The Naughty Girls - Book 6 Publisher: Intrepid Reads Publication Date: March 10, 2016 Genre: Historical Romance Print Length: 320 pages Available from: Amazon For Reviews & More: http://tometender.blogspot.com
I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. This is book four in the "The Naughty Girls" series. I have been jumping in and out of the series so for me it was okay as a standalone book but it would hurt to read the others for the best reading experience. Lord Darius Alexander has always seem to be weak for any wager and thinks nothing of getting in with Caitlin Hart in a gambling table. But Caitlin has surprised him by wining his money at the table. Now it seems Caitlin has his hear and his money. This might not have been the best book out of the series but it was still a nice book that I was glad to have the chance to read.
YES! YES! YES! Finally a woman who can go toe to toe with an overwhelmingly arrogant male. Emma Locke, I am loving it. Darius is rich, titled and full of himself but one meeting with a beautiful woman cuts him down to size. Caitlin is smart, beautiful and doesn't suffer fools. My best way of describing her is a newly discovered gem, she's rough around the edges but buried inside is the makings of a beautiful treasure. Her interactions with Darius are pure gold. She doesn't not hesitate to speak her mind but can't help have mixed feelings where he is concerned. I received an ARC of The Danger in Daring a Lady by Emma Locke in exchange for an honest review. I was already enjoying the Naughty Girls series but after reading Darius and Caitlin's story, I am not ashamed to admit that I am head over heels for these characters. My favorite book in the series.
When I requested this book from NetGalley I had forgotten that I already read one of Emma Locke books - The Problem with Seduction - and I did not like it. Maybe I was thinking that this book may be better, but it wasn't.
This time the protagonist of the story are Caitlin and Dare. Caitlin has been maid in mansion, then she become a bar wench and when her sister got married to a crofter, she goes to live with them to take care of their baby daughter. Then she loses her sister and the family to a cart accident and inherits the farm. So for years she has done her best to keep the farm alone, but her neighbor does everything he can to push her out - buys over her farmhand, steals her sheep and demolishes her stone walls. Even in card table he tries to make Caitlin to wager on her farm. And when he finally succeeded, was Caitlin with the winning hand and won his and this London dwellers money.
Lord Darius, whom everybody calls Dare (quite suiting name for a gambling junky) is just like his father was and non of his brothers trust him with money. His debt is so deep that the money lenders were ready to bet him to the inch of his life to teach him a lesson, but they got his twin instead. After this Dare is ready to sell his debts to a rich widow, to be her boytoy, but even highly vigorous young man needs some rest from insatiable lady. So when one of his brothers gives him a bank note to deliver to their solicitor, he jumps to prove his worth to them. Only when he has gambled all his small change in card table and the new offer is very tempting and he has very good hand, he can not resist, he goes for a bank and wagers on his brothers bank note. On a morning he goes to Caitlin farm to demand the bank note back, since he was not supposed to play with it at all.
Caitlin knows that once a wager is made it can not be unmade, so she will not give the note back, but she hires Dare as a farmhand to earn back his money by mending walls, clears the potato field ... anything to earn the money back within a month.
When Caitlin goes to the bank to change the note to a money, she discovers the note to be a forgery - Dare's brother was testing him. Dare is of course outrageous 'How can Tony do this to me, does he not trust me!!' (well, no and with a reason) so when his other brother comes to fetch couple of weeks later, they all go together to London, so Caitlin can demand her money from Tony and maybe stay in London for good.
Things will not go as easy as Caitlin was thinking and of course Caitlin and Dare have developed feelings for each other while they were together, but Dare has to make a decision - will he settle his debts with the rich lady, will he go back into her bed or to debtors prison. Truth be told, I can not recall how he escaped the prison and the bed but in the end the happy couple will end up together as there ever was another possibility, and everybody is happy.
Just like the previous book, this one is also filled with contradictions, absurd situations and things that seamed to not belong to this story. I would not say it was absolutely bad book, it just isn't book for me.
A Lord with a vice.. yeah haven't seen that one before.. *grins* Emma Locke has chosen to call this her Naughty Girls Series but for me, in The Danger of Daring a Lady, I see a strong willed woman and a man with potential.. That is if he ever gets over his childish ways.. or hey his gambling addiction.
Caitlin Hart is practical in the extreme. She inherited her sister's farm and has spent the past few years working it, pretty much alone. With little time for fun she spends the occasional night at the local tavern at the weekly card game. She plays to win and win she does. But when the scapegrace she wins from refuses to just pay up and go, Caitlin is suddenly set up with a farm hand who is determined to earn his money back. And maybe her heart.
Lord Darius Alexander and when he's holding a can't loose hand he feels it's only right to bet the family money. You know the money they can't afford to loose? Of course he does.. and suddenly he feels angst at his decision. Wanting to win it back he is confused when Caitlin Hart (the winner) refuses to give him a chance to win it back. So now, he's determined to earn it back. He's not going to let his family down. (A little late but at least he's trying).
So... I was not a fan of this book. It wasn't a bad book it just lacked something. Connection maybe? This was what I would call a solid fall back book. Taking an overused trope and well over using it. Sure there's a bit of a twist to it but personally, I just wanted to slap good old Darius. He lost his family money, remorse sets in and now he expects Caitlin to give it back... hmmm
Now Caitlin? She's sort of sunk into depression, oh sure that's not what Ms. Locke calls it but she has. Her family is dead, she's stuck on a farm and funds are dwindling. What's she going to do with a London Rogue? Reform him? Well of course she is.. *grins*
Like I said, an ok book but it didn't excite me over much.

This review is based on the ARC of The Danger in Daring a Lady, provided by netgalley
Lord Darius "Dare" Alexander thought he would walk away with a heavy purse and move on, he didn't expect his opponent Ms. Hart though. When Lord Dare loses his families money to Caitlin Hart, he finds himself trying to barter for it back. However Caitlin is not just willing to hand it over. Game, set, match the fireworks are about to erupt and Dare finds himself in a position he has not planned on, however he could lose it all if he is not too careful.
Dare took awhile to warm too, he is a bit immature and I think he felt entitled, he does redeem himself though. Caitlin I thought was a powerful heroine but struggled a bit to figure out why Dare. Once they do come together, the pages sizzle. A bit slow but as the story progressed you are definitely curious as to what will happen next. Good read, I think I would check out more from this author.
This is the 6th book in THE NAUGHTY GIRLS series. Even though it's part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone.
It has some dark moments but the romance is so, so sweet! I didn't feel much chemistry -sexualy- between Dare and Cate, but I could understand where their feelings for each other came from. What I found outstanding is how addiction was treated in this book. I never expected it to end the way it did, the plot was wonderful!
I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Dare is quite a handsy man, “damn and blast,” he swore, then cupped her bottom with both hands, holding her pliant body against his aching erection." I liked this book Dare couldn't see himself as a good guy but he really was despite his faults and mistakes.
Unlike practically every other Recency romance I have ever read, this one doesn't have a powerful, wealthy nobleman as the hero. Our hero is the youngest of six and a lying cad addicted to gambling and working off his outrageous debt as a cicisbeo. In short, he's lacking in honor and morals. This story tracks his redemption, inspired by a hardworking woman inferior in social standing and tough as nails. Especially toward the end, the story turns a bit sappy, but that doesn't detract from the romance. Nicely done.
THE DANGER IN DARING A LADY by EMMA LOCKE is the sixth book in THE NAUGHTY GIRLS series. This is the first book I have read by Emma Clarke, but I find myself drawn into this series and I will go back and read the others. Even though this book is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone. THE DANGER IN DARING A LADY is an historical romance, but it doesn't dwell on details of the period and lose the focus of the story.
Miss Caitlin Hart is a strong willed, hardworking, no nonsense, independent, beautiful woman. When her sister passed away, she was left with a small farm, Southfield Farm, to take care of. Unfortunately for her, Lord Bamber owns a hugely successful estate that borders Caitlin's farm. Lord Bamber desperately wants to claim Caitlin's farm for himself, and will stop at nothing to attain it. Caitlin has refused on numerous occasions to let him purchase it, so he has stooped to devious measures to get his way. Equipment becomes missing, fences and walls mysteriously torn down, and any laborers she hires are bought off or hired by Lord Bamber. Caitlin never waivers in her hard work and determination to make the farm lucrative.
Lord Darius Alexander is an extremely handsome, well dressed, gentleman, and one of five brothers. His brothers deceivingly entrusted him with a letter of credit to deliver to Cheltenham to take care of family business. Lord Darius, known to his family and friends as Lord Dare, is on the verge of being disowned and banned from the family if he makes another mistake. While passing through Hartlebury, he stumbles upon a card game. Temptation sometimes is just too great for a man like him. Things went well for a while, but Caitlin proved to be a worthy opponent and he lost. He lost everything, including the letter of credit he was to deliver to Cheltenham. His brothers would surely disown him now.
Will Lord Dare be able to convince Caitlin to return the letter of credit? Is there a chance for any romance between Caitlin and Lord Dare?
*I was gifted a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
I liked this book much better than the last book and since I had read Roman's book, I was able to follow this story despite not having read the entire series.
Lord Darius Alexander aka Dare, is the youngest of the 5 Alexander boys and seemly the most irresponsible.
He has been sent by his brother Tony to deliver funds to the family's solicitor. On the way he stops for a quick game of chance at a local inn and is drawn into deep play. Sure he can win, he bets the funds he got from his brothers and loses!
Desperate to get the money back, he calls on Caitlyn Hart aka Cate and pleads for the return of his money. Cate flat out refuses to give this spoiled, self centered man back the money, but offers to let him work for the money. At first Dare is appalled by the idea, but soon discovers that Cate will not be swayed and grudging agrees to her terms.
Dare started to grow on me during his time on Cate's farm, he is hurt by the test his brother apparently gave him, confronted by his "mistress" and falling under Cate's spell knowing nothing can come of it. So, by the time Roman shows up to bring him home, I thought the other reviewers had been too hard on him.
Cate has decided to join the brothers in London, hoping to get the money Dare owes her. But the truth is she wants to be with Dare - even knowing what kind of man he is. Once they return to London, the Dare of old returns and I understood the POV of the other reviewers who did not like him.
He does change, but it is a SLOW change, a bit too slow for my taste. And Cate changed too - I don't want to give away the story - but by the end of the book, I was happy that things worked out for them, because they deserved each other - make what you will of that statement.
Now that I am invested in this family and apparently the man-ho brothers are wed, I look forward to Tony & Bart's stories.
Caitlin “Cate” Hart and Lord Darius “Dare” Alexander meet in a small village tavern over a game of cards. When Dare loses all he has to Cate he eventually offers to work on her farm to recover what he has lost to her. It is the first time Dare has really worked and with time he begins to feel a bit better about himself.
Cat owns her farm, is a “spinster” at age 28, has trouble with the lord on the neighboring property and is lonely but I still don’t see what she sees in Dare. Perhaps his position, handsome face and physique draw her interest but the more she learns about Dare the further she should have run from him. He warned her but she did not listen. I don’t really understand why she left her farm to go to London, thought he was such a catch or any of the rest of it OR how he could make the changes he did just because of Cate and her belief in him…I also wondered if the changes would last after the end of the story. I admit I skimmed from about midway to finish since the story did not truly hold my attention and I could not really relate to the main characters. That said…there are many who did enjoy the read as I have seen in other posted reviews.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Intrepid Reads for the copy of this ARC to read and review.
This is the first book I've read in the series and even though it might have been helpful to read some of the other books, this book did a pretty good job on standing on its own. That said, I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I adored Caitlin Hart, a strong young woman who was trying to make it in a world that constantly seemed to throw obstacles in her way. She pushed forward because quitting meant she was a failure and that was something Caitlin was not.
Her chance meeting of Lord Darius Alexander at the gambling table in her village set her on a path that she never saw coming. As far as Darius, his character was weak-willed, arrogant and unrepentant of any of the bad things he'd done in the past. This was hammered over and over in the book and it became redundant and made it hard to see any of his redeeming qualities. Without revealing any spoilers, the path to anything resembling a happy ending is a long and windy one.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
In The Danger in Daring a Lady, Lord Dare is the bad boy of his time and Miss Cate Hart is a level headed, hard working young woman that sees all his faults and finds his charm appealing and understands his internal struggles and pain. Lord Dare has a history of trouble, gambling, lying and being undependable but something about Cate starts a change in him.
I loved the strong female character of Cate and her no nonsense approach to handling Lord Dare especially the lemonade in the billiards room that he so deserved. The dialogue was appropriate to the time period and full of wit. Lord Dare for all his faults turned out to be a charming and reformed man that I really liked despite his bad boy ways.
I enjoyed The Danger in Daring a Lady and how the way people lived during this time in England was woven into the story bringing their way of life alive again.
This book does not magically get better. Life is too short to read terrible books ladies & gents.
The lead male has no character development, he just bumbles around until push comes to shove, and even then his change of heart is paltry. Too late is just too late. I can tell you three other books that have strong female empowerment roles if that's what you're searching for. You will not find it here.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!! Cate and Dare are so real....Dare isn't a rogue, Dare is a gambling addict, who cannot take responsibility for anything when we meet him...he blames everyone else for his behavior...his greatest weakness is his addiction and his addict behavior. He can't admit he has a problem and own that his family have very good reasons to feel how they do about his behaviour and for not trusting his judgment, or him.....but he does begin to take pride in honestly earning his way, working hard, paying off his debt to Cate, he WANTS to be a better man, to be the man Cate thought he was.. and he works hard to turn his life around, to be the man his family, and Cate know he can be. I think his greatest weakness is also his greatest strength...his pride...his pride is what kept him gambling, turned him into an addict, kept him thinking he was better than everyone else...and his pride made him go to Cate and work for the money to prove something, his pride in wanting to be better, to prove he could be better, to prove he was worthy of not just Cate, but his family's forgiveness.
Cate is strong and very hard working, she is extremely independent......I would say her biggest flaw is.....she is very, very stubborn
I adore the secondary character of Lady Elizabeth...she came from a questionable background and managed to become something more.. she was accepting and understanding of both Cate and even Dare.
The picture this book paints a true portrait of addiction, it shows that it truly affects everyone, not just the addict but the whole family.. only it is set in regency times....and forgiveness is more than just saying the words, even though there was no such thing as a 12 step program, that is what Dare had to do, admit he had a problem, accept responsibility, make amends, apologize to everyone he hurt with his behavior...it was a beautiful story of recovery and forgiving yourself and others.I loved how this theme touched throughout the whole book
I love Cate's honesty, Cate's independence and her willingness to believe with her heart as well as her head. Her BEST moment was the lemonade toss!!!! I think her reaction to Dare saying I love you the first time and she told him she wouldn't promise to wait...it broke my heart...even though I knew ultimately she would do what she could for Dare because she loved him.... still was surprised when it happened
This is such a great read...really a true journey, a hard won love story
A great read from begining to end! The story kept me riveted from the second page to the last. You might imagine based on the title and cover art that this would be your normal historical romance but nothing could be further from the truth and I think that is why I enjoyed this book so much more than I anticipated. Our hero and heroine are just normal people dealing with normal, somewhat, circumstances, they don't fall in love, and into each others arms on first sight. In fact in the begining you start to think that the story must be about two totally different people, and just when you start to get comfortable and thinking these are the right people the author hits you with an unexpected blow from left field and she does that through the whole book! I know I will be paying extra special attention to this writer in the future.
Can country miss Caitlin Hart reform notorious rake and gamester Darius Alexander?
Darius (Dare) has been a disruptive and occasionally dangerous presence in the previous books of this series. His compulsive gambling has caused other members of his family to be attacked when mistaken for him and the family plans for developing the estate put on hold when he lost money.
Dare is on the way through Gloucestershire when he stops at an inn and enters into a card game. He loses the cheque he was carrying to Caitlin Hart and in order to reclaim it he offers to work on her land.
During this time he gradually realises he actually loves her and wants to become the man his family want him to be.
There are several problems to be overcome and set backs for Dare in his journey, but all works out in the end.
This has been another enjoyable story in this series
This book has the potential to be a fantastic book. The writing really is good, and drew me in, the plot interesting. There are some fantastic characters but I wasn't a big fan of Lord Dare, he was weak, pitiful, a slave to his addictions and and his woe is me act. I know that is kind of the point of his character and watching him grow into a better man and changed by love etc. I enjoyed seeing him grow as a character and fall in love but I just prefer a hero to be a man of substance. He was weak where Caitlin Hart was determined and strong. I just couldn't fathom that she fell for him, it just wasn't believable to me. I think if they weren't so mismatched I would have liked it way more. There was some great chemistry though. Over all, I thought it was was an alright read.
I have been reading the occasional Regency for many years and found this to be very different from the formulaic ones. Our heroine is a woman who owns and runs a farm. Our hero is a gambling rake who loses a card game to her. The only way he can get back the money he lost to her is to work on her farm with her. Normally in this genre working class women are not generally treated with respect by the upper crust but that does happen in this novel as does a lot more. It was a quick and easy read.
Emma Locke’s heroine, Cate, is quite literally down to earth. Her hero is a disaster of a wastrel and a rake. Dare has lied, cheated, stolen and has an addiction to gambling that has ruined not only him, but his relationship with his close-knit family. Locke seems to understand the powerful hold of addiction; she doesn’t fall for any easy answers, but does allow Cate and Dare to fall in love, and ultimately find their way back to life and a family full of love.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Something about this scenario just didn't sit well with me. I think it was the lame idea that you can reform a bad boy, but mostly the way he played this pathetic "I'm no good for you. I don't deserve anything good," BS as a way to hook her into wanting to prove him wrong. Yeah, happy ending but... I've seen a guy like this in action and too many women left in ruins by the same type. This whole bad boy thing is something that just needs to go away.
When Darius loses a wager to Cate that he can't afford to lose, one thing leads to another until he finds himself in the worst possible situation he can possibly be in. I enjoyed the characters in this one, and the development of Dare's character in particular. The ending seemed a little too fairy-tale perfect, but I liked it all the same.
I received a free copy on exchange for an honest review.
I have just finished reading The Danger of Daring a Lady and I am totally gobsmacked. It was written by a new-to-me author who has blown me away with this rollicking tale. This story! Wow! And the characters, even more Wow! I feel.like I have been thoroughly entertained and I most definitely have enjoyed every moment of it too.
The first book I have read in this series, but will not be the last. Apart from the graphic sex scenes that I am not a fan of, I found the book a compelling read. Great believable characters bought to life by great world building. This is a romance with ups and downs and obstacles but has a happy ending.
The storyline and characters are great. A rake gets the chance to reform his life, but feels he must pay his debts before claiming his love. Thank you for an interesting read, Danny and Debbie Scott.
THE DANGER IN DARING A LADY is a very entertaining romance. Lord Dare is a charming, gambling addicted rogue and Cate is an absolute wonder. However, I would have been happier without the X rated scenes.
Only made it half way through this one. I did not like either of the main characters, and the dialogue was so far from historically accurate it was ridiculous.
