Hraban Chronicles #7

The Oath Keeper

Rate this book
Augustus, Armin, and Germanicus are dead, and Tiberius rules Rome. Maroboodus is a prisoner in Ravenna. Germania is in turmoil, but unconquered, and Rome’s eyes are turned elsewhere. Hraban’s son is safe with Hands.

Hraban, however, must brave Rome once more with the help of Gernot, his brother.

He is hunting for the killer of his wife, and he descends into the bloody underbelly of Rome, into the gladiatorial world where he seeks to finish his quest for vengeance. After that, he will serve Tiberius, and, if Tiberius agrees, he will travel back to his ancient home, and start his life over with what little remains of his years.

And yet, god Woden is laughing, for while seeking a fight with Ulrich, the man who put an arrow in Cassia’s back, on the edge of victory, Hraban discovers clues to the perfidy and madness of once-fair Tiberius.

He and his few allies must decide if they will undertake a perilous quest to save Rome and the few remaining kin of Drusus from a man who hates the city and the empire and who has gone dangerously unstable. A path of murders and deceit await Hraban, and odd allies must be made to outwit his dangerously clever and mad lord Tiberius and his many allies. Enemies must become friends if they would have any hope of success.

I read this entire bunch of books and really enjoyed them. They are definitely historical fiction and they seem to be well researched although I am no expert on Roman history. The character was very engaging and I highly recommend this author. I am hoping to find more of this author’swork in Kindle Unlimited.

Alaric Longward's style is certainly unusual.

Having said that, the story is excellent and difficult to put down.

The plot is complicated, with a myriad of characters, but is well researched. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the tale is told from the viewpoint of the tribes.

Pity to see the end of the series.

Excellent Read

Just the right mix of real history and fiction to make a compelling story.

Would love to see The take on Camulodunum!

This would have been a five but for the fact that I found it a little rushed. It is the last in the Hraban series. That said it is another excellent book from Mr Longward.

I wish I could write a review but Amazon seems to have conflated the title with the group who stormed the capital on Jan 6 2021 and has removed it from their site. I cannot find it.
