'I was born to fight,’ I used to say. But now I know it isn’t true. I was born to be a pawn in the great game of royal houses, married to someone – anyone – my family deems suitable...

Bel would do anything to spend her days alongside her best friend and childhood sweetheart Shae – training in the art of Vairian combat, hoping to some day live up to the legacy left by the mother she lost as a child.

But when a mysterious and deadly attack on the capital lands Bel’s father unexpectedly on the throne, her life is forever changed. In order to secure her father’s new empire, Bel is forced to travel to the distant land of Anthaeus to marry its recently widowed ruler, Conleith.

For any other young woman the chance to become royalty would be a dream come true, but for Bel, the rigidity of court life is like a prison sentence. And while Conleith is an unexpectedly intriguing – and attractive – puzzle… could she ever love him when it would mean turning her back on her feelings for Shae, her first love and last connection to home?

Then a brutal assassination attempt nearly takes her life, and Bel learns that there’s more on the line than just her happiness. Is it the same faceless enemy who attacked her homeland and, with dangers around every corner, who in the palace can she trust?

Jessica Thorne watched far too much sci-fi and read far too much fantasy at an impressionable age. And it was awesome. She writes fantasy and sci-fi romance with a steampunk edge and just refuses to face reality.

The Queen’s Wing by Jessica Thorne is the first book of the romantic fantasy series by the same name. And before I begin talking about this one I will mention it does have a bit of a love triangle but before the groans start it’s one that blends well and resolves itself.

The story centers around seventeen year old Bel who wants nothing that to become a flyer like her older brothers. Born on the fringes of royalty however Bel is still being trained to be a princess much to her dismay. One day Bel manages to talk her governess into letting her take her Wasp out on a flight and while Bel is gone her city is attacked.

The Gravians managed to attack and destroy the majority of the royal family leaving Bel’s father the new king. In order to secure a new alliance in the wake of the attack Bel is betrothed to Con, an Anthaem on another planet. With a new potential husband Bel leaves her home and is immediately the target of numerous attempts on her life during the ongoing fight for power.

Starting off reading this one I really liked our heroine in this story, she has a strength and determination about her established early on. The story really took a shape of it’s own and didn’t remind me of this or that. There is creativity to the world and plenty of action all throughout. A few things along the the way really surprised me but I will admit to some others seemingly a tad predictable but overall a nice start to this fantasy series.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Check out this post and others on my blog!

You know when you read a fantastic first chapter and you get that sinking feeling? That the rest of the book can’t possibly keep this up type of feeling? The Queen’s Wing keeps the momentum going. By the last few chapters, I was stopping every couple of pages to shake my head at my husband and mutter, “How is she doing this? This is just so good.”

He called me jealous. I’m just happy to have discovered a new favorite author.

I’ve seen some comparisons online between The Queen’s Wing and Sarah J. Maas. I actually don’t think that comparison is apropos. I’d pitch this as science-fantasy à la Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series, with voice and pacing similarities to Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Don’t let the cover fool you; this book doesn’t read as over-the-top, fluffy YA. It is NOT The Selection. Sure, there’s a princess and a love triangle, but the MC has such a deep sense of duty and self-awareness that this really should be classed in that mystical “new adult” realm that never really materialized in the way we thought it would.

And the romance is perfect. If you want a love triangle done right, this is it. You won’t end up hating the MC for being a selfish asshole, and nothing feels forced.

Plus there are loads of crazy plot twists and surprises—surprises that actually surprise you. So many books like this are predictable; this one is not. Yet none of the plot twists broke my immersion.

Once again: it’s perfect. Read it. I’d be shocked if this isn’t a top book of the year for me. And by the way, Thorne is coming out with a sequel in a couple weeks, and she also writes under the names R. F. Long and Ruth Frances Long, so there’s a back list for fans of The Queen’s Wing to catch up on. Thanks to Lauregalie for turning me on to this book, and happy almost weekend, everybody!

Have you read one of those books where a bunch of things happen since the first chapter? This is one of those and that was the first problem I had with this book because I like getting to know the characters better before anything happens since that way I feel more connected to them and actually care if something happens.

At the beginning I was also confused because I was expecting Bel to have wings like a dragon or fae since the title of the book is "The Queen's Wing" but then she starts talking about sort of planes. I spent five pages thinking all the people around there were flying on their own and that everyone had wings but once the "planes" were mentioned I had to rethink all the scenery which was super unfortunate but I guess it's my fault for interpreting the title differently.

Then we have the repetitions, this book has a lot of them. I usually don't pay attention to things like this but with this book I found it really distracting because I couldn't stop noticing them and thinking "I get it! You don't have to keep telling me the same thing."

Also there were two times where I felt the events on the story didn't make sense at all. One thing was happening since the beginning and then our MC just completely changed her mind out of nowhere and the other one it was a "revelation" she had but without reasons like she just thought it and it became real.

description

And lastly, I didn't like who she ended up with. I already explained a bit in the spoiler section but it truly didn't make sense to me, I think everything would have been better if she simply hadn't been in any relationship. I honestly don't see the appeal in the love interest, I would have made the other choice but that was impossible too, unluckily.

To leave this review on a positive note I have to say that I really enjoyed tha characters, especially Bel our MC. She was truly a fighter that didn't want anything else apart from being a good soldier, she was truly a sweetheart and I couldn't help but feel all her pain at having her destiny chosen for her.

Moreover, the different worlds in the setting sounded super interesting to me, I think that would be the reason for me to read the second book if we get to see the other worlds but I guess the second one will take place on the same setting as this one.

description

All in all, this book had it's great qualities like the characters and the world but the story on itself lacked a lot of sense and the writing has room to improve.

I received this book from the author/publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Bel is the distant grand-relative of the king and never expected for her role to be anymore more than just a little bit noble. However, when the entire royal family is wiped out in an attack, Bel's father is suddenly King, her brother the Crown Prince and Princess Bel is shipped off to another planet for an arranged marriage with someone she hasn't even met before.

This YA sci-fi story is so much more than an arranged marriage plot line but if 'arranged marriages to love' is one of your buzz phrases for a book, you'll love this one. I really liked Bel as a character - she's really tough and feisty but she's also a trained warrior and the way she thinks and reacts are often what you would expect of someone who grew up like her. She never really did anything out of character and I really enjoyed seeing her character progression from rather reluctant princess to a true queen and leader. She earned the loyalty of her people, and her husband to be's, and it was well deserved.

I definitely think the love triangle plot of this book could be removed altogether as it brought no extra element into it for me, except some eye-rolling at Bel's constant thoughts about how she'd love to kiss Shae. There was no chemistry between them, it was very tepid tap water, and I much preferred the chemistry and dynamic Bel had with Con.

The action in this book was great and I loved the descriptions and scenes, particularly when Bel was flying. The flying machines in this book were really cool, and I loved how important they were for Bel and her country people. Some things seemed to happen quite fast - like the time they were hiding in the forest, I wasn't sure of the timeline - there were definitely parts of the story I wanted slowed down a bit so I could fully immerse myself in the world that I truly loved being in.

The world is honestly really interesting, and I want more of it and for Bel to explore every inch and know all its history as it seems so rich. This book ended in a really nice place but I'm definitely excited for the next one already.

I love myself a good story with royalty so.. A girl, living for freedom, who suddenly has to give up everything in order to become the future queen? Yes, please!

I was, honestly, pleasantly surprised with the way I was drawn into the story right from the start. The way Bel shares how her passion is flying - in space, might I add - and her feelings regarding her position in her planet's politics grabbed my attention and didn't let go.

Apart from the setting in space, there are also alien creatures introduced, I guess I should call them. Different races that have a place in the world Jessica Thorne created and I really liked that aspect. Especially since they weren't "discovered" or anything like that.

There are some queer side characters!

During the first part of the novel, I was totally enjoying one of my favorite tropes - sorry - which is the love triangle. Sort of. I was totally rooting for it and then.. something happened to make it all fall apart and things went downhill from there.

To say I was disappointed when that trope disappeared in the most awful way possible is an understatement but it's definitely not all.

There's one other thing I didn't really struggle with at first, but.. half-way through the novel that changed as well. I'm talking about our main character, Bel, suddenly not feeling all that fleshed-out anymore. At the start, she really had her own characteristics and knew what she wanted. She had the background and upbringing that fitted with her actions until.. it didn't anymore?

Then there's this issue I had with the writing. Not the writing in general - I honestly liked the dialogues and a lot of other things but when it comes to the action? Not so much. It wasn't described as I would've liked. Some of the fights and situations Bel found herself in should have been so intense but they weren't. On top of that, she got hurt at one point and I'm still not sure what exactly was wrong with her? It was.. never stated, as far as I remember?

I also found it a pity how there isn't more insight in Bel's relationship with her lady-in-waiting, Elara. There's some kind of evolution between those two, but it's simply said. You don't actually see it happen and I really, really wish that was different! Not only that, it also happens with Conleith, her husband-to-be!

Guess I can't really.. say a lot of good things about this novel? It's not that I disliked reading it, but there were so many things that could've been better. There's potential, without a doubt, but.. this novel definitely needs a couple more rounds of editing before I could say I truly liked it.

1.5/5!

A STANDALONE high fantasy, you say?
yes.
Great writing? Not really no.
Interesting plot? Predictable but fun.
Character Development? Not much
Good Characters? Some were good, I wasn't the biggest fan of the main character
Romance? Yes (Not the best, but not the worst)
World building? Not as much as I'd like
GUILTY PLEASURE? Yes.

While reading my assessments above, you may think, why is she giving it 4 stars? It's hard to say this book deserves 4 stars, but nevertheless I ranked it based on my enjoyment. I love fantasy and although I will admit it's not a great book, I enjoyed it and it was a fun ride.
If you're looking for a fun, quick, fantasy read, I would recommend!

This book is so much more that described in the blurb. It touches the skies in a booming explosion, there is thrill, there is exhilaration, there is vengeance against the evil. There is romance, there is friendship, there is a commander, a strategist, and there is a Queen who loves to fly.

There are the ancients hidden deep below the earth, waiting for the right time to awaken. There is evil flying around the skies, hoping to annihilate the resources of the planet. There are those who are ready to defend, the Vairians. Then there is the Empire with its own alliances.

The story starts with Bel, a young 17 year old, with dreams in her eyes of flying her Wasp and with her best friend, Shae in her heart. An innocent girl starting her life. When suddenly evil Gravians attack, and her entire royal family is just vaporized. Her father becomes the King, and to maintain the powers, Bel becomes a pawn and is betrothed to Con, the Anthaem of a distant planet, Anthaeus. Soon on Anthaeus, Bel discovers more, a lot more, including herself and what she is meant to be.

This book by Jessica Thorne, is nothing but a joy to read, a celebration of a girl who metamorphoses into the Queen, who can lead the people to fight against the evil.

I love Bel, she is honest, she is clear, and she is daring. She is the perfect kickass heroine, who can fly and fight with the best of them. She is the heart and the soul of the book. Her sense of justice and her loyalty are a sight to behold. Jessica Thorne has portrayed her so lovingly, taking care that Bel is worthy of the respect. Every emotion is carefully written, without it overpowering the plot. Romance is subtly threaded, the pace is rocking, the battle lines are cutting, the entire book is breath taking. Literally

It took me some time to warm up to Bel, to understand the various political alignments, and the different characters. But once the initial foundation is laid, the pages virtually fly in turbulent air currents of a fabulous plot which made me long for book 2.

The first thing I thought of when reading about the heroine was Amelia Earhart. She identifies as a flyer and that’s all she wants. The comparison didn’t really hold up throughout the novel though and it becomes more like her backstory with an occasional reappearance.

After most of the royal line is wiped out, Bel is pulled into the drama as the princess for her kingdom and sent off to marry the prince of another kingdom. She knows her duty, but her heart is pulled to her childhood friend and her life as a pilot. But as she adjusts to her life with her betrothed, she realizes that her life of duty may be the path she prefers.

There’s a bit of a love-triangle component that’s mostly a frustration. Sometimes I like this trope, but it felt too angsty for me. There’s the first guy who fills the guardian/forbidden role (Shae), and then there’s the prince/arranged marriage (Con). The outcome is predictable. There are some sweet moments that make it worthwhile, but it’s hard to get past the angsty bits.

The world is a bit confusing for awhile. Alien enemies and a government situation that’s hard to get straight. The two main worlds though are pretty straightforward, so it’s easy to overlook the confusing parts. There are also some inconsistencies with the characters that frustrate me; Bel in particular goes back and forth with what she wants, and it can be annoying.

Even with these issues though, it’s still entertaining as a quick fluffy read, and sometimes you just need a bit of fluff.

This was a difficult book to rate. Thorne writes an imaginative, original tale that had so much potential, I absolutely wanted to love it. When the focus was on story telling and not internal dialog, I really did love it. I guess the best way to describe The Queen's Wing was exciting, action packed and riveting with some major slows and lows that brought it to a grinding hault. Edit those slows and lows and The Queen's Wing has amazing read written all over it... But as it stands, I'm going to have to go with 3.5 stars.

I received this ARC copy of The Queen's Wing from Bookouture. This is my honest and voluntary review. The Queen's Wing is set for publication November 21, 2018.

Bel isn't a princess, she's a distant relative of the King, and is allowed to follow her dream of fighting and flying.
When tragedy strikes, Bel is thrown into a role she never prepared for; but perhaps she is the Queen that the empire needs.

I received a free copy from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

This story follow Bel, a Vairian noble who had the luck to grow up away from the pressures of court. She has trained all her life, to fight, and most of all to fly. She wants nothing more than to be a hero like her mother, and to spend time with her best friend/crush Shae.
After an attack on the capital wipes out the Royal house, Bel and her family are thrust into roles they never prepared for.
Before she can come to terms with any of it, Bel is shipped off to marry a complete stranger, for the sake of a political alliance. When she arrives at the incredibly elegant Anthaeus, Bel constantly feels like an outsider, and a barbarian.

The first half of this book was pleasant, but felt familiar. Despite the sci-fi setting, it felt like the standard YA story, with a girl who is "different" and pretty-but-doesn't-know-it. There's clearly some setting up of a love triangle, with Shae and Bel's new fiance Conleith. Bel is a duck out of water, and has to suffer the casual contempt of the people she is supposed to rule, along with a few that ramp up their poor treatment of her.
It was nice, and interesting enough, and at first I thought this was just going to be a light read.

The second half kicked off in a way I didn't expect. The universal enemies - the Gravians, and the re-animated corpses that make up their army (yes, you read that right) - arrive and all hell breaks loose.
Suddenly, having a barbarian queen that fights and flies is the only hope Anthaeus has.
The plot keeps you guessing, and is brilliantly original from this point.

This reads as a stand-alone, but I'm happy to see there will be further books in this series.

*4 OUTSTANDING STARS*

Soooo, buckle your seatbelts everybody, you're in for one hell of a ride!
Be prepared though, there's some serious Game of Thrones shit going on here! You never know what's going to happen or who's going to die, and leave it to the author to stab you in the heart halfway through the book and then twist the knife a little more towards the end for good measure!
I'm kind of scared of diving into the next book because I feel like nobody is safe 😂

I loved this way more than I expected!
I loved the story and the setting and the rich world the author managed to craft in this one book. What I liked the least was the romance (which is why I'm deducting a star). Bel is such a strong and badass character, but I hated how she couldn't make up her mind between Shae en Con until the author basically made the choice for her. Which made it seem kind of forced if you know what I mean? Even though I shipped them from the start?
I don't want to give too much away because I feel like you really need to go into this blind like I did. This was a massive rollercoaster ride and I cried and laughed alongside Bel the entire way.

I'm off reading book two now. I'm kinda sad that from the description it seems to center around Petra and Zander though. If anything happens to my baby Con, I don't know what I'm going to do!

This was such an awesome book! It started off pretty average, but then the sci-fi aspect of it evolved, and it really blossomed! I adored the writing style, the characters, the relationships, all of the original things that this story brought to the table. It isn't often I read a sci-fi story set in space, I'm more into fantasy, but this just really gave me hope XD Blended sci-fi and fantasy together perfectly.
I cannot believe how much I need #2 right now! This book was so gripping and entertaining, and the story just flew by! To be honest the cover really doesn't do it justice. One of the best books I've read in such a long time!! I need more!

I really liked this book even though it broke my heart!

The Queen's Wing hooked me from the start. It was very entertaining and as soon as I started it, I knew I was probably going to enjoy it. I didn't expect it to have a love triangle but it's not something I'm really against. However, something important happened in this book (I'd say in the middle of it?) and I'm not going to spoil you but man, it hurt to the point where I was crying. It also means I was attached to the characters so there's that.

This book was action-packed and I'd recommend it if you enjoy your fantasy with some sci-fi in it!

I loved this so much, from page one I was hooked. I loved Bel so much, at the beginning when she gave into demands and didn't fight back I didn't think it sat well with her character but she holds her own and fights in her own way, feisty and stubborn I loved her. Love triangle wasn't too bad as it sorts itself out and isn't too drawn out, but I loved Shae dammit !! Damn you ! Cannot wait for the sequel.

I recieved an Arc through netgalley for an honest opinion. All thoughts are my own.

"Kick anything long and hard enough and it will bite back. The meakest among us still have teeth"

Bel is apart of the royal line... far far down the royal line. All she wants to do is fly her wasp and command her own wing just like her mother did. When she is shot down from the sky by invading Gravians she discovers that the entire royal line has been attacked, and she is now the only princess of their world. Bel is then sent to the planet Anthaues to wed their king and forge an alliance, with her royal guards who used to be her friends, but she is conflicted between the boy she always loved and her duty to her world. And her husband to be has secrets, as bel is exposed to the new world she must accept her new fate and try not to be killed in the process.

✅Wonderful writting!
✅Warrior princess, intergalactic alliances, mecas, spaceships, a world under attack, an ancient race, love and loss... It's an epic story
✅Love is Love
✅Beautiful world building
✅Love triangle(s)
✅Sci-fi/Fantasy

❌I have nothing bad to say here!!

This book took me completely by suprise. I thought I was getting a princes who marrys a far away king and loves to fly (magic?). What i got was aliens, wars, battle ships, assassination attempts, a badass wasnt-supposed-to-be-a-princess princess, a little love is Love, a king who actually has some skills, love triangle(s) and a whole lot of epicness. It's safe to say I loved this book. I loved the story, i loved the writting style, i loved the plot twists, the only thing i didn't like is now it's over and I have to wait until the next book is out! Well done Jessica on your Debut novel. It was outstanding! I dont put my books in order but it is deffinatly in my top 5 of 2018!

The Queen’s Wing follows the story of 17 year old Bel, who wants nothing more than to fly and fight like her brothers.
But as the only girl in her family, she is destined to be married off to a Prince in order to secure her father’s throne.

Torn between doing what is right and doing what she loves, Bel is forced into a whole new world full of royal politics, assassination attempts and treason.

I thought this book was fantastic. I really enjoyed the story line and the concept was fascinating. Although none of the tropes were original they were well written and perfectly paced.
The characters are well developed and their motivation is clear from the start. I really liked the dynamics between all the characters and the supporting cast were just as interesting as the main protagonists. Bel is a awesome female lead: fierce, stubborn, strong and proud. I also liked her snarky attitude as it felt appropriate for a 17 year old girl.

I particularly enjoyed the slow burn romance between Bel and Con. Con is a little bit eccentric and geeky whilst still being shy and mysterious which I loved.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I didn’t want to put it down!

The Queen’s Wing is a YA romantic fantasy with a strong and determined female lead, two brooding males and a believable love triangle.

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Queen’s Rising will be available from 21st November 2018.

I started reading and almost stopped when I realized that there was "sci-fi" mixed in with the story. I normally enjoy the "historical" aspect of fantasy and thought I wasn't going to enjoy this, but the author did such a perfect job of mixing the two together that they meshed.

Yes, there were times where I was a bit annoyed with Bel and Con and how they couldn't let go of their past loves. I just wanted to smack the back of their heads and tell them to "wake up"!

Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely and couldn't put it down with all the action and how the author built the different worlds and races.

This is definitely more Science Fiction than Fantasy in my opinion.
The worlds are well built and the characters engaging.
Plenty of action with romance thrown in.
This makes a really good read for YA to the more mature like me.

*I received an ARC copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Bookouture in exchange for an honest review.*

I want to start off by saying I think the blurb is a tad misleading. I got the impression from the description that our FMC Bel was going to be a shallow character caring only for her desire to fly. I was pleased that this was not the case, Bel was much more than that. Her real desire from even the very first chapters is to be herself and not what everyone needs her to be. I think Bel and I had a little love hate relationship going throughout the first half of the book that thankfully ended with love lol.

We start with Bel, being both stubborn, and disdainful of both customs and the posh and circumstance that comes from her title. She sees herself as a pawn to be played in a game of alliances and wants so badly to just be free. That is what she gets from flying..freedom. After enemies invade her world and kill all the royal families except for hers, she is all of a sudden elevated in status and hates every minute of it. Unfortunately, instead of making Bel act out, or turn sarcastic and real with people, the author has Bel put on a mask to be what everyone else needs her to be. During this time I really struggled with Bel, she had this poor pitiful me thing going on, with these angsty monologues and I really just wanted to come through the book and smack her around a bit. Luckily the mask doesn’t stay too long thanks to Con. When Bell is shipped off world to complete a marriage alliance with Con the ruler of Anthaeus, she is taken off gaurd by Con and by the beauty and history of Anthaeus. I have to say I really liked him, not the typical alpha male I got my crap under control character, he’s a nerd and he’s absentminded in his genius and he loves engineering.

Bel eventually has to come to terms with the ending of her childhood dreams and her destined future because as enemies show up on her new homeland she really breaks out her warrior, the epitome of characteristics of her homeland, and she goes to bat for her new world.

I really really liked the history of Anthaeus and would really have liked to know more backstory about the ancients. The mecha aspect was also really interesting since that type of AI is actually being researched now, not with humans of course but still. The worlds in this book seem to use magic and technology together. Now that Bel has her mask off I really think that this series is going to just get better. In the next books I would really like to also see a little more chemistry between Con and Bel. It also might be a little helpful for a little Glossary or something with all the planets we have encountered so far and the people inhabiting them. Maybe where they are in relation to each other.

description
The Queen's Wing is my first book from this author and I love it. Fantasy is my favorite style and this book is a nice addition to the genre.
It's about Belengaria of Vairia. She is the daughter of the youngest and least important grandson of a king, She and her family are not high in the chain of succession to the throne so they've had the freedom to have their own separate place in Elveden away from the Royal Palace at Higher Cape.
All Bel ever wanted was to be a Pilot like her mother. The Vairian pilot Wasps, flying machines into battle. Adept Royals are given control over a squadron of Wings whenever they've been adequately tested. Bel trained and fought tirelessly towards that goal but to her dismay, destiny hold a different future for her.
When the whole Royal line is decimated and murdered by the mortal enemy of Vairian, the Gravians, all that's left is Bel's family. After narrowly surviving an attack Belengaria who is now the only Royal Princess with her father being crowned King, has to be given away in marriage for the sake of the kingdom. The alliance with the Anthaem, Conleith of Anthaeus (Basically the King of Anthaeus) was made with the late Vairian King at the behest of the Empress of the whole Empire.
With no choice but to do what's best for her people, Bel departs to Anthaeus with her beloved best friend/Personal Guard Shae who she has had a crush on since forever.
The journey is fraught with assassination attempts from the Gravians who are looking to spread more chaos but Bel survives due to the training she's received and sacrifices made.
Anthaeus is more than she expected not only does she deeply connect with Con (the Anthaem) but she is drawn by the beautiful world. Though the people's superficial love and their incessant traditions were tiring.
Life in Anthaem had it's ups and downs that thrust Bel into battle with Con by her side, with connections to ancient beings and well honed battle strategy, Bel and Con will need everything they can get to survive the war coming.
I really loved the action in The Queen's Wing, I commend Jessica Throne for expertly portraying the mounting tension. The writing is amazing and the romance is not rushed but a gradual build up.
There are many aspects of this book that feels refreshingly original and I totally loved that.
The moments to the ending had me on the edge of my seat and I finished this book eagerly awaiting more.
I can happily recommend The Queen's Wing, it's a book that most certainly should be read. Can't wait for what's next from this talented author.

Oh I did not want this to end one bit! I read it so slowly and savoured every last word. I haven't loved a fantasy romance with an epic love triangle so much since the ACOTAR series. Jessica you are killing me I need book 2 now please and thank you.
Where do I even begin with telling you about the Queen's Wing, first the cover.. could it be any more stunning! The characters, how can you not love Bel, she's loving, loyal, stubborn as they come and willing to give up everything for her family and then for a people on a planet where she doesn't even come from. The scenery, this book is very visual painting beautiful blues and greens in my mind.
The Queen's Wing is a beautifully written story that I very much enjoyed and I'm so looking forward to Book 2.

I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you!
I enjoyed this novel. It has several different themes and is told in first person point of view. The story begins with Bel, whose father is the grandson of the Vairian king. When their mortal enemy, the Gravians, kill their family, Bel and her family become the new king, princes, and princess. To satisfy the Empire, Bel is betrothed to the young, widowed king of Anthaese, Conleith. Bel will do her duty, but she believes herself to be in love with Shae, one of Vairian warriors and now, one of her bodyguards. Bel has to survive assassination attempts and fit into court life. She meets Con, and likes him, but her heart wants Shae. When the Gravians attack Anthaese from within, Con and Bel have to flee and survive until help can arrive. Con and Bel care for each other and over time grows into true love. Bel and Con try to save as many people as they can, with help from native Anthaese who can communicate mentally with Bel and Con. However, time is running out and the Gravians are creating more Mechas to use for their evil purposes. They will need all the help they can get to save Anthaese. I am looking forward to the next novel in the series!

Big thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for sending me an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In all honesty, the first half of this book was not working for me. It was really hard for me to picture this universe, to begin with, with the multiple worlds/planets (if I understood correctly?), the palaces and gowns and the high-tech air/war-crafts.

Also, the multiple love angles were not working either. Actually, they were infuriating. The Bel-Shae angle is the trope I despise the most and right from the start I knew this was going to happen, it was maddening and infuriating. Jondar was the one character I liked from the second he made his appearance and tbh, I had felt some chemistry between him and Bel but haha, my bad. It made me sad though that he never stood a chance with the person he was in love with but glad something else worked out for him. As for Con, I could not trust him one bit for that first half, I almost despised him, I was just waiting for him to turn his coat or go crazy.

BUT then, the major turning point hit. And I mean, by then I had constructed a sort of image of the places and settings so it was becoming increasingly easier to imagine, the storyline picked up and there was so much happening. It wasn't confusing at all, on the contrary, it became so much more interesting and gripping, I was literally unable to put the book down!

I LOVED IT. The story progressed and culminated very nicely. I was able to find more affection for Con and even though the chemistry between Bel and him wasn't crackling, I was starting to feel it.

All in all, I think this book (and series? I hope it becomes a series, I ended up liking this universe and these characters a lot) has a lot of potential. I can't wait for it to be released so it gets all the appreciation it deserves. I am really very glad to have stuck with it through that first half or I would have missed out on an amazing book.

Cheers and best of luck to the author!!

[…] the Anthaese will never want a Vairian Queen. But like it or not, that's what they are getting.
Like it or not. That is what I'll be.

Summary
The most important thing in Bel's life is flying. She was born to do it. Or so she had thought. Because a series of tragic events has led to her having to give up everything she ever wanted. Now she has to abandon the love of her life and marry a man she hasn't even met. And she will never be able to fly again.

Writing
I love Thorne's writing. It's simple and very easy to read. It reminds me a lot of Sarah J Mass' style, only it's much less repetitive. And with significantly smaller amount of ellipses.

Characters
Bel has a very strong personality. She's fierce, determined and brave. She's a great heroine. However, I feel like her love interest didn't complement her character very well. Around them (especially Shae) she turns into someone completely different, and while I can understand the charm of a teenage girl being all mushy around her crush, I think that at this point we are all a little bit tired of that.

When it comes to her love interests, I never really liked Shae. He's not a bad character by any means. I was just annoyed by how different Bel's perception of him was from what we were actually seeing. And at this point I don't really know if that was done intentionally by the author, to show that girls tent to idealize their crushes, or was it just an accident.

On the third side of the love triangle is Con and I actually really liked him. Yeah, he is a little bit too perfect. But it's okay. I can forgive him for that. I think he is completely adorable and I liked the chemistry between him and Bel.

The native Anthaese were my favourites and I can't wait to see more of them. I think they were created in a very interesting and clever way. It was a really unique concept, though I would like to find out a little bit more about them.

Plot
Okay, I will admit that the first half of this book reminded me a lot of Selection, with all of those half-assed assassination attempts. But later on it actually got really good. Yeah, the romance is a big part of the story, but it's not overwhelming. And the actual plot is really well thought out. I enjoyed it a lot. Especially since there is absolutely no boring moments and I love nothing more than a fast paced book.

Overall
I flew through this book (no pun intended). It is a true YA trope cocktail, but I mean that in the best way possible. It's a fast-paced, addicting story that turned out to have much more substance than I expected (I actually think that this cover, even though it's pretty, does this book a big disservice. I saw it and I immediately thought "The Selection". And even though The Selection is plenty of fun, this book is on a completely different level). I can't believe I don't see more people talking about The Queen's Wing. It could easily compete with some of the most popular YA romance fantasy out there.

*I received an ARC from NetGalley; all opinions are my own!*

Bel becomes the only Vairian princess after an attack on her homeland's capital, and she is sent to a far-away planet to marry its king in order to secure an alliance. But Bel never wanted to be royalty; in fact, she wanted her royal ties forgotten so she could fly her Wasp and have the chance to be with Shae, the boy she's had a crush on since childhood. But upon arriving on Anthaeus, the king (called the Anthaem) is not anything like she expected, and she finds her heart torn between her new love for the land and its people and the life she desperately wanted. Con and Bel are two kids who had too much responsibility thrust on them at a young age, and they do what they can to shoulder the burden. I loved their reservations and insecurities, and the way they learned to rely on each other. I liked that it was slow-burn and not insta-love, and that they had to be diligent in making their relationship work. I loved the Rondet and the way their interactions worked. I haven't read much sci-fi but I definitely enjoyed this mix of it with fantasy. I can't wait to read the next book!

The Queen's Wing was not for me. I did not finish this book, but read it halfway through. I was so prepared to love it! It sounded epic. While it was easy to read and kind of addictive, it was hard to overlook the poor writing style. The sentences were extremely short and often didn't make sense. They chopped and changed and it really interrupted my reading. The world and names were so hard to get used to. Even though it was additive, I think the author tried just a bit too hard to make it epic in every aspect. The characters were hard to connect to and the narrative felt predictable.

The romance was the only interesting plot point for me, and unfortunately that started to dissolve into a bit of a mess. I understand many people will enjoy The Queen's Wing, but I was not one of them, sorry!

I don't read much fantasy, in fact almost none, but I needed to read a book that started with the letter "Q" and I had this on my kindle so gave it a shot. Overall, I did enjoy this book. Princess Belangaria (Bel) is a Vairian and just wanted to be free. Free to live her own life, to fly and to love, especially her childhood friend Shae. When life on their world changes due to an attack, she becomes a crown princess and is betrothed to marry Conleith (Con), the ruler of Anthaeus. Not everyone is happy with this arrangement and it doesn't take long for attempts on her life to occur.

I really liked Bel. She was smart, strong, and didn't give. She's taken from everything she knows and everyone she loves and forced into a diplomatic marriage. Jessica Thorne writes in a very descriptive way. I could picture what Bel was seeing through these descriptions. This new land was beautiful, fresh yet scary. There were a lot of emotions in this book from the characters and in turn with the reader. I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. There was adventure, excitement, romance and heroism. I think I will read the second one in this series to see what is next for Bel.

Thank you to Netgalley for giving me the chance to read and review, "The Queen's Wing" (The Queen's Wing Series Book 1) by Jessica Thorne. A beautifully unique work of Sci Fi & Fantasy! I've never read anything like this before. I was captivated by every event. This book really kept me on the edge of my seat! Bel is such a strong and caring main character. I really found myself enjoying all the characters. I can't wait to read the next one in the series. It felt nice to be truly surprised by the events in a book again. Most books can be very predictable these days. If you are debating about giving this book a try, do it! You won't regret it.
