She went from reading Bobbsey Twins to long, lush romance novels. One day she stumbled upon the Shining by Stephen King and was hooked. She turned her back on romance and became a serious Stephen King fan, reading every word he wrote. When she caught herself checking under the bed and looking in the closet for monsters or worse, she knew it was time to put down the horror stories and pick up the romance novels.
Her return to romance novels was short lived. She’d started law school and soon her reading was limited to legal opinions. Then one happy day her younger sister handed her a Harlequin romance. They were just what the doctor ordered. The books were short enough to read in a week and still get her required reading done. Best of all she knew there would be a happy ending and she wouldn’t have to search her room before she went to bed each night.
When her first child was born, she stopped practicing law to become a stay at home mom. Her second child followed nineteen months later. With two little ones in the house, reading suddenly became limited to Dr. Seuss and other children’s books. Any free time was spent trying to catch up on sleep or laundry.
All too soon her kids were attending pre-school two hours a day. She spent those few precious renewing her relationship with romance novels. After a while she felt the urge to write a book of her own and she began writing the stories she wanted to read. She spent many years writing some really terrible books and learning her craft. In 2014, Kathy participated in Brenda Novak’s online auction to raise money for a cure for Diabetes. She was the highest bidder for a critique by editor, Charles Griemsman. He did not buy that book immediately, but requested another which became her first book in the Sweet Briar Sweethearts series.

After a couple of good, but average, books in this warm and engaging series by Kathy Douglass, we now have Raven Reynolds and Donovan Cordero's sweet and lovely story. Donovan and Raven were desperately in love and had a promising future together. However, one day Donovan simply disappeared. He was gone for ten years and now he is back. Where was he all of those years and why did he leave when it was more than apparent that he was in love with Raven?
Raven has a young son and she is about to marry. She may not be in love with Carson but she waited ten years to hear from Donovan and she is finally ready to move on with her life, and this includes bringing more stability for her son.
When Donovan shows up at her door one day tens years later, she almost faints. He has nearly a similar reaction when he discovers that the boy he suddenly sees has his very same eyes and other features. He is a father.

I loved ❤ this book's storyline. Some parts of this story made me cry 😢. I loved ❤ Raven's character. I loved ❤ Donovan's character. My heart broke 💔 for Donovan. I loved ❤ the ending. Awesome job Ms. Douglass.

I voluntarily requested an advance reader copy of this novel--it's been some time since I read a novel in the Harlequin Special Edition line, but the blurb sounded interesting, a second chance romance usually gets my attention, plus it was in a new-to-me series and was written by a new-to-me author, so I gave it a try, and since I seldom shy away from giving my honest opinion, I didn't find a lot to like in this novel, and, for a number of reasons, which I'll explain, I'm giving it only a 2 star rating.
Raven Reynolds and Donovan Cordero grew up together on neighboring ranches in coastal North Carolina--which was a revelation to this reader, since I've spent time in that part of the country and never knew there was cattle ranching happening there. I was also surprised to learn that both of the main characters in this novel are Hispanic, yet aside from a few mentions of the color of their skin and hair. Their rich Hispanic heritage--the music, the cuisine, the language, the customs, and their long history wasn't mentioned at all in this story, which made me wonder why the author chose to make her main characters Hispanic at all.
Ten years earlier, 19-year-old Donovan, who was as deeply in love with Raven as she was with him, and was on his way to meet her when he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and inadvertently witnessed a cold-blooded murder, and he was shocked to see this murder carried out by the town sheriff and wealthy and powerful Karl Rivers, the father of Donovan's school friend, Carson Rivers. Because Donovan had protected Carson from the kids who bullied him at school, Mr. Rivers spared his life, but told him, in no uncertain terms, that if he didn't leave town immediately and never come back, that he, his parents and Raven would be killed. So Donovan ran--and for 10 long years there's been no sign of him anywhere, despite a $50,000 reward, half of which was put up by Mr. Rivers, and years of searching for him in vain, years that broke Raven's heart and nearly destroyed his parents, no trace of him was ever found.
Fast forward 10 years, and we find Donovan living and working on a Texas ranch. when he hears that Karl Rivers has died--and knows that the threat to his loved ones is now over, so Donovan returns to Sweet Briar with no advance warning. His mother practically faints when he shows up at the family home, and his next stop after his reunion with his family is to see Raven, the love of his life, and, "Hi honey, I'm home" isn't going to cut it with Raven. His disappearance nearly drove his parents mad with grief, and tore Raven's heart out. The fact that he never got in touch with her or his family made absolutely no sense to me at all--burner phones exist, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms have all been available for the past decade. Why in the world and how on earth would he have thought that the people who loved him wouldn't want to at least learn that he was alive and well, even if he couldn't tell them where he was or return without endangering them?
There's more than one surprise waiting for him at Raven's family home--her mother, who used to care deeply for Donovan, welcome him, and thought highly of him, doesn't even want to make eye contact because she and Raven's dad had to deal with Raven's heartbreak, and that meeting with Raven he missed? She was going to tell him that she was pregnant with his child, and her family had to support her through her emotional breakdown after he disappeared, deal with her pregnancy and the birth of Donovan's son, Elias. Raven is also scheduled to marry Carson Rivers in one month. She doesn't love him, which is fine with her, because if she doesn't love him, he can't break her heart the way Donovan did.
Raven doesn't welcome her long-lost love, nor does she even want to tell Donovan that he has a son, but when Elias enters her parents home, Donovan sees himself at age 9 in the boy, and knows that Elias is his, knows he missed out on Raven's pregnancy, the birth of his son, and the first 9 years of his son's life. While he wants to be a part of his his son's life, Raven simply introduces him as an old friend. She knew and loved Donovan at age 19, now he's 29 and she doesn't really know him or trust him anymore, just as he doesn't really know anything about what her life has been like for the past 10 years, so despite what Donovan wants, Raven is calling the shots when it comes to Elias, and she's being protective of her son, at least until she knows this older version of the man she once loved.
One of the things that I had a problem with almost from the moment Donovan returns and goes to see Raven is why he doesn't simply tell her the reason he left town and disappeared without a word to anyone. Granted, Raven is now engaged to Karl Rivers son, but he doesn't have to name names, he merely needs to tell her that he left because he loved her and because Raven and his parents lives would have been in danger if he stayed, and that having them going to the crooked town sheriff for protection would have put them in even greater danger. Again--he could have made a phone call, sent a text, gotten in touch with them somehow. And if Donovan thinks he's going to pick up his relationship with Raven where he left off 10 years earlier, develop a relationship with his son, and then they'll all ride happily into the sunset, he's got another think coming.
So, how does someone who's been missing for 10 years pick up the threads of his former life? What about Raven's engagement to Carson Rivers? Is Elias going to be told that Donovan is more than just an old friend of the family? How will he react if and when he learns that Donovan is his father? Will he and Raven have a second chance at love? Quite honestly, most of the drama in this novel could have been avoided if the two main characters actually communicated with each other--the waffling Raven goes through is a prime example of that lack of communication. The more I kept reading, the more I kept shaking my head. Raven's passive/aggressive behavior made her seem incredibly immature, and exactly why these two characters loved each other, beyond outward appearances, was and is still a mystery to this reader, especially considering the way the HEA ending was portrayed.
If you're looking for a quick read and a second chance romance, you may like this novel more than I did, but there are far better second chance romances out there, and I suggest you give this one a pass--I'm sorry, but I cannot recommend it.

The Rancher's Return by Kathy Douglass ..Sweet Briar Sweethearts series #1 ... This is the first book that I have read by Kathy Douglass and I really enjoyed it...I started reading late last night and only put it down to sleep and eat. This is a great second chance romance and I was totally in the whole way. Donovan( childhood friend and young sweetheart of Raven who he ghosted and was gone for 10 years. Raven ( heartbroken when Donovan left without out telling anyone...and by the way she was also pregnant) There are so many things to over come... he wants to be part of Elias life as his dad...he wants Raven back... there are tears(I cried some ugly ones) laughter, drama, and a heartwarming HEA.

Before reading this book, I was not even aware that there were ranches in North Carolina. So I learned something new from this book, the first in a new series and a new author for me. This is a second chance, cowboy, murder mystery all rolled into one.
Donovan Cordero was nineteen years old, with a sweetheart he loved and his whole future ahead of him, when driving to see his girlfriend, Raven Reynolds, stumbled upon a murder scene. He did not recognize the victim, but did know the two murderers- the town sheriff and the wealthy and powerful Karl Rivers, father of his friend, Carson. Because Donovan had protected Carson from bullies, Rivers spared his life, but told him to leave town and never come back, or he would kill his parents and his Raven. Terrified, he fled. Ten years later, after the death of Rivers, he comes home, to the delight of his parents, but shocks Raven. She also has a surprise for him- their nine year old son, Elias. Can Raven trust Donovan, even after she learns why he disappeared? Can they return to the love that they once had?
The characters are appealing and the plot interesting. However, most of it did not make much sense. Happening in the age of electronic devices, Donovan could have texted or emailed his parents and Raven, to explain why he had to disappear. After a few years had passed, after maturing a bit, he could have gone to the FBI, but he did none of that. He then repeated his mistake of silence, after leaving the Turner's ranch in Texas, where he had eventually settled, by not contact them once he was back in Sweet Briar, letting them know he was ok. The author, also never revealed the identity
of the murder victim, but maybe that will happen in the next book.

Donovan left without a trace and returned back to his hometown to find that he had a child with the love of his young life Raven. Only thing is Raven is engaged and he wants to see about making a relationship with his boy and even his mother.
You konw what as predictable as this book was I still found myself enjoying this book. It was interesting seeing everyone's reaction to the news that he was back. Then it will come a time when he has to tell the real reasoning why he left in the first place. I enjoyed seeing how he worked with Raven and the news that she was going to be married soon and how everything would work out. Being that its a contemporary romance and its clear where things are headed was I was curious to see how things would get settled with her fiance and how things would work out for the reasoning why he left in the first place. Yea I know my review is vague af but I'm still try to keep a bit mystery of what the book is about. Any ways I really enjoyed the book.

Donovan and Raven lives and love was paused for the ten years that Donovan was away. He was on the run for having seen too much, but his friends and family presumed him dead. When he returns he is ready to start where he left off, but ten years is a long long time. Life has changed for others and resuming exactly where he left off is not an easy thing. The family goes thru trying times with Donovan’s return. He had to reveal his deep secret and even that causes hurt. Life isn’t easy, as ppl we have crooks and turns, hills and valleys as we navigate life and love. Even though Raven still loves Donovan, it’s not something she can easily surrender to even the possibility of rekindling a romance with Donovan. Too much water under the bridge.

Obviously one doesn't rate these types of cheap, small, mass paperback books like one does with real popular novels. So I'm going to go easy on it. For being one of those cheap, quickly and easily written stories, it was pretty good. I was intrigued by the plot enough to read it in one day, and I care enough to look in to a sequel.
But one does not read these types of books for the literary aspect. We read them just for something quick, simple, and easy to digest. But I will read more of these soon!

Yes To Second Chance Romances!! 🤗
Kathy Douglass really knows how to pull on the heart strings! To be torn away from your loved ones not having the chance to say bye or never be able to call or send messages about your well-being, that’s tough and torturous! I just can’t imagine that life! Kathy took us through this journey and it was very emotional but it was also very enjoyable! I loved this book just as much as the others! I would definitely recommend this entire series! Kudos, Kathy!! 💜

The Rancher’s Return is the fifth in Kathy Douglass’s Sweet Briar series, and is about Donovan Cordero and Raven Reynolds. Donovan witnessed a crime and subsequently disappeared for a decade without a word to anyone. What happens when he comes back takes time and effort to heal the rift with his family and beloved and the son he didn’t know he had.

The writing wasn't horrible, but all of the driving conflicts in the story were contrived which made the story feel fake. Any time the primary tension is dependent on characters withholding information beyond the point of what is reasonable it kills my enjoyment of the story.

This could have had more depth. I'd like to have known more about the incident that made Donovan leave town. Also, the old friends really don't get much of a presence in the story. It could have been better.

Delightful story!
The characters are engaging with the story progression. This book is a perfect addition to the series, anticipating the next book, " A Baby Between Friends ".
The characters are engaging with the story progression. This book is a perfect addition to the series, anticipating the next book, " A Baby Between Friends ".

This was okay, I just felt like there was so much unanswered. I get why he leaves and comes back. But to not figure out what happened with the murder he saw or anything. Just lives his life for 10 years... It just felt like a excuse to use for him to leave and come back. Even though Ravens ex fiancee finds the family of the guy that was murdered, thats all thats mentioned. I just don't see the point in there even being a murder other then the guy need to leave then come back to the girl.
