The truth about her past may define her future.

Sophie loves being an elemental. Being able to bend the natural world to her will is thrilling, even if the need for secrecy is putting a cramp in her dating life. Lately, though, her powers have been growing, making it difficult to resist the heady temptation to use her gifts.

Trying to balance the elemental world with having a normal life is tough enough without her overbearing, way-too-perfect, and way-too-good-looking guardian Aidan watching—and judging—her every move. The trouble is she’s not sure where she fits in and she’s sure as heck not ready to conform to stringent elemental rules.

But when secrets about her life are revealed and outside forces threaten everything Sophie holds dear, she must embrace who she is or risk losing it all.

The concept behind the storyline is very intriguing and I like the idea of Elementals. I find it interesting that the strength in power seems to lie within females. I also like that Sophie, the female Main Character, already knows what she is, and is training for an eventual position as a guardian. This is a nice deviation from the norm of a main character learning that they have powers, and they they’re special. However, Sophie isn’t allowed to train with her powers because the EA, the governing body for elementals, are very strict about using magic due to exposure.

Although I found the premise interesting, it was really hard to get into this book. It moves slowly and the language is very verbose. We spend most of the book listening to superfluously detailed descriptions about unimportant things and the storyline gets snagged in spots because of this. It loses its flow and I get bored.

Also, I found Sophie very frustrating. At first when we meet her, she seems mature and focused, but she isn’t. Not at all. Weirdly, as much as she supports the EA she is also aggressively against a lot of their rules and restrictions. I get teenage rebellion under strict rules, but Sophie takes it too far. Despite numerous warnings and her own acknowledgement of her poor choices, she continues to do it, putting herself and others at risk repeatedly. She also doesn’t appear to learn from her mistakes, and continually makes very idiotic choices, resulting in disastrous outcomes.

I enjoyed the supporting characters a lot more. Lena is naive but more mature and sweet. Aiden is by far my favorite. He is very mature, focused, dedicated, and intelligent. He is only a year older than Sophie, but has to clean up her messes and cover for her constantly. The chemistry between Sophie and Aiden is extremely palpable and although I love the feels, I am not currently a fan of Sophie because she is so far from Aiden’s level.

The information we receive at the end makes the book a lot more interesting but we have to slog through the rest to get to it. Sophie has a ton of room to grow and mature in the series and for her sake I really hope she does, because the book ends on a cliffhanger and she better step up.

Good start to the series. Some areas dragged for example her waffling on Aidan and where that was going but I think that was purposeful. It was to add some suspense to that romance but for me it didn’t really need all the confusion. That area would have been better without Sophie always wondering and questioning the feelings and what was between them. there letting things just happen would have been better.

Sophie: strong, stubborn and confused. She doesn’t really know where she belongs. She would like to be a guardian but not really because she doesn’t really believe in the council’s views on many things. She loves that she is a elemental and doesn’t like having to hide her powers. She hates how Aidan and other guardians are treated. She is confused on so many things about her future and her life in general but that confusion is her strength because it helps propel her forward. That and her loyalty and love for her family and friends.

Aidan: broody but sweet. Strong and loyal. A guardian but also a friend and there no matter what for Sophie. I think I liked him the most because he didn’t pull any punches and told it like it is. He didn’t always agree with the council but he believed in protecting those with powers and keeping them safe.

The story was interesting and I loved how it played out. We got to see how the council reacts to adversity and how their rules play out with others. We see Sophie’s powers grow as does the attraction between Aidan and Sophie. See the beginnings of a mystery with the kidnappings and also Sophie needing to learn how to deal with her growing powers. The past begins to come out as well and slowly be revealed as 6 elementals are taken right in front of the council. There isn’t a lot of world building about the elementals but that for this book is good because you aren’t overwhelmed with too much history all at once. I love that slow build in this book and how the danger ratchets up as the book goes on.

Thank you to YA Bound Book Tours and author Jessica Ruddick for providing me with a copy of this in exchange for an honest review!

Find this review and more on my blog The Rest Is Still Unwritten!

Undefined is Jessica Ruddick’s latest release and is the first novel in her new Elemental Saga, kicking off what looks to be a promising new series perfect for fans of Vampire Academy and those who enjoy their novels full of magic, adventure and hints of romance.

Teenager Sophie is an Elemental, able to bend nature to her will. She loves being able to control the elements of water, fire, earth and air, but lately her powers are becoming dangerously high. Sophie also wants a normal life, but when you’re a part of a secret race of individuals, it makes dating hard. It also doesn’t help that her next door neighbour and brooding guardian Aiden trails her every move. When a series of weather occurrences point to a rogue elemental targeting innocents, Sophie and her family are put on alert. Then Sophie finds herself in unexpected danger and she soon realises that there are secrets surrounding her world she never knew about and she’ll have to manage to harness her abilities if she wants to survive….

Having previously read and enjoyed Jessica Ruddick’s novel Legacy, I was very excited to read her latest release and thrilled to discover it was another enjoyable story. Introducing readers to a world of individuals able to harness the elements, Ruddick sets up the beginning of her new series really well with likable characters, an easy to follow storyline and enough moments of danger and romance to satisfy readers.

Main character Sophie was fairly easy to follow. She was a normal teenage girl who is facing your typical teen drama and angsts; dating, high school, peer pressure, jealousy and bullying as well as facing the difficulties that come with being an elemental. Sophie has a lot of potential as a character that I think will come with age and experience. I’m keen to see where Ruddick plans to take her as an individual.

A love interest in Undefined comes in the form of Aiden, who Sophie has known for many years and has only just begun to feel more than friendship for. Aiden is your typical male lead who is strong, capable and swoon-worthy. He’s somewhat of a brooding bad boy and pseudo-cousin figure for Sophie but the tension between them is an underlining current to the story and sweet. I’m hoping for a lot more romantic and chemistry filled moments between them in the future.

Jessica Ruddick has set the beginnings to what looks like an intriguing storyline. We’ve only been introduced to the tip of the iceberg where the elemental world is concerned and I’m hopeful we’ll discover a lot more as the series progresses. Ending with a cliffhanger, Undefined leaves me ready and raring for more.

The book has a very interesting concept but I kept finding myself wanting to rewrite it.

The writing itself wasn’t bad, but the structure and focus of the storytelling were way off. It felt more like a teen romance with a fantasy angle than a fantasy novel with some romance until like halfway through. However, the world built once it got built actually has a lot of creativity and promise. The magic is a little bit soft-core Shadow and Bone, but the societal structure is different.

The beginning of the book was difficult to get through. I understand wanting to focus on Sophie’s feelings of isolation and wanting to be normal, but there are more elegant ways to do it. Trying to explain the feeling so thoroughly is what made the first half of the book drag. It was just like any other teen drama book. Down to all the stereotyped archetypes. It even stole some partial plot points from better YA dramas (like Speak).

Most of the characters weren’t developed very well. Lena, the best friend character, was boring. All we learned about her was that she likes school and doesn’t like going out and she was overwhelmed and sad when her parents died. All we know about the main LI is that he’s perfect. The HS guy she liked was too stereotypical to the point of his wanting to be with Sophie becoming unrealistic. The HS antagonist was every bitchy girl out of every teen movie. The parental figures are parental. I kept forgetting who was who since they were so similar to one another (and if one couple didn’t happen to have the same names as my next door neighbors I would have forgotten who was with who). They lacked depth, in other words.

The book didn’t really get going until the last 20%. Part of me wants to read the next one because the plot was FINALLY starting to get good, but at the same time I feel like reading a full summary would do just fine.

I’m tempted to say 2.5 rounded up, but it wasn’t bad, per se. It just wasn’t well-balanced and needed editing in some places and fleshing out in others.

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Magic, Magic, Magic!!! Need I say more? I guess I should so let’s begin.

Well, technically Sophie is an elemental which means she has control over the elements, but she is supposed to basically keep is “hush, hush” and not use her gifts. As you can expect she does not abide by this. I am mean I would be the same way, let’s be honest.

I enjoyed following Sophie’s story and getting to meet all the other characters along the way. The buildup in the story was well paced and helped to keep me focused while reading. This is good because I am very easily distracted while reading which really sucks at times. There was also the growing romance between Sophie and Aiden. It was sweet and no insta-love (YAY!!!). Insta-love is annoying, end of rant.

Overall, this was a casual and enjoyable read. I could she myself re-reading this one afternoon. Sophie has so much potential and I look forward to waiting her grow as a person and with her powers.

I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I enjoyed the premise of the book, people amongst us who can control elemental properties such as water, air, earth, and fire with varying degrees of power. Females have power and potential of greater ability while males can train to be guardians and my have a minute amount of ability.

The characters were likable. Sophie comes across mature by making a few good choices and having appropriate rationale, then like the teenager she is, makes more lousy choices without thinking about consequence.

What I didn’t care for was writing that went in a round about way to say something. I found the sentence structure and flow halting, almost a bit formal with few conjunctions and several unnecessary words. Even in dialogue that’s supposed to be between teenagers. I also felt the storyline was little predictable. Unless it’s me and I just made really good guesses as to outcome.

OMG, I had a hard time putting this book down. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, I'm dying to know what is going to happen. Sophie is an elemental and loves her power, even though she is not suppose to use it, but she is stubborn. The secret of her being an elemental is hard for her to have a normal life as a kid. She has already been through so much in her life. Lena is her best friend and was adopted like her. Aidan is a guardian and Sophie is going to try to be one too. But what are all the secrets that EA have. What is true about her life and power? What are these feelings she has for Aiden? Can she protect herself and her friends? Why does Aiden's mother keep tabs on her? I received a free copy for my honest review.

This was great.

I've read a lot stories like this one, but Undefined takes a different tone!

It is never a good idea to keep people with powers from using them! Yes you need to be careful about exposure cause let's face it, Humans suck big time!

But to make it so you're not allowed to defend yourself when someone is trying to kill you is just wrong!

The EA Council is crazy thinking that is what should happen. And making it only possible for strong talents to vote is unfair to!

In Sophie, we have a teenage girl who just wants a normal teenage life. Except she can control the elements and must keep that part of herself from her non-powered friends. As the plot takes her out of her comfortable, mostly normal world, she struggles to find herself. This character journey is woven into a plot that builds to an exciting crescendo at the end of the book. Leaving you amazed at the journey the author has taken you on. And read to pre-order Book 2.

Disclaimer: I received a free electronic copy of this book for judging purposes in the 2019 NERFA contest held by the First Coast Romance Writers.

I loved this book! The development of the relationship between Sophie and Aidan seemed a little rushed at first, but as I read more of their story it became clear that they had cared about each other all along. With the big reveal in the last third of the book, and the major cliffhanger at the end, I definitely want to find out what happens next!

Exciting! A thrilling supernatural story full of magic and mayhem. I loved the characters! They were enjoyable to read. I felt like I was right there with them in the story experiencing it as they were. I really enjoyed the chemistry and the budding relationship between Aiden and Sophie. The story set up a good build up of this new elemental world and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

I volunteered to read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and to submit an honest review.

Undefined is an excellent Paranormal book that is based on Elementals. Females are more powerful than males. Sophie is one of the main characters and struggles with trying to keep her abilities a secret while also trying to have a normal dating life.

This is an excellent paranormal read.

The first installment of the elemental saga introduces to young adults Sophie, Lena and Aidan, who with their foster parents make a unique family .The secrets of their respective "elemental" power and their past is cleverly interwoven in the story of their everyday teenage lives. Full of action and a slow developing love story , Undefined is a must read for lovers of the teen paranormal genre.

i received this book as advance reader copy from the author. This book pulled me into it at the first page. The concept behind the novel line was very intriguing and very pulling me into the book itself. I really do like the idea of Elemental and what I find was interesting that the strength in power seems to lie within females and not the males. Very cool and unique on that end.

Now it is time for the characters, i did like some of them and others i found a bit dull and boring or
when I found Sophie, she is very frustrating. At first when we meet her [ switch i did like her then], she seems mature and focused, but she really isn’t. Not at all! I found she was a bit of a idiot bitch but she did grow on me more as the novel progress.

Lena is naive but more mature and sweet, in most cases she is a good character, but she fell flat for me, she was so dull and irritating to me. Lena was/is a home-mat [ like a doormat]. I do hope she does improve in the second book.

Now onto Aiden, when to begin about him, he is very mature, focused, dedicated, and intelligent and that is like most love interesting in the Book World. He is only a year older than Sophie and that is fine with me, but he seemed to be older with his personality then eighteen years of age. He then has to clean up Sophie messes and cover for her constantly and somewhat seems fine with it.

Sophie has a ton of room to grow and mature in the series, same with Lena but the opposite to Sophie, she needs to grow a bit into a teenage and have some fun. Aiden needs to loosen up and be a guy at times, like flirting or making out without a reason.

Now can book 2 be delivered to me?

This book is the start of the series and introduces us to many characters. Sophie and Aidan are the two main ones. For the majority of it the story is built up. Near the end it picks up the pace. Book does end on a cliffhanger.

Undefined has a great storyline. Sophie is a likable character who reacts to situations in a very authentic, believable way. Once you get to about the halfway point in the book, it’s very hard to put down as the action ramps up. Looking forward to the next book. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Wow! What an exciting new series Jessica Ruddick has started with her new book, Undefined! This series promises to be a hit among young readers as well as those of us who are beyond the young reader stage of our lives . . .

I am new to the elemental genre of novel, having avoided them most of my life because I didn’t want to get into werewolves and sci-fI and all that stuff. However, I found the world of elementals interesting and was delighted that it was not scary!

As a former high school teacher, it also brought back so much about the social aspects of what teenagers deal with during their high school arms—the clicks, the mean girls, the parties and peer pressures, sports, etc. and, of course, first love is so much a part of growing up. When Sophie and Aiden finally acknowledge their attraction, will it be too late? What does Sophie learn about her heritage that makes her question her existence? How does she use her powers for good and selfish purposes before learning the significance of her actions? And, finally, what will happen when evil threatens her adopted sister?
