Judging the book by its cover, I would have expected quite a lot here. I mean, check those abbs! I cannot say I disliked it, but I do have some issues with the plot and the characters and the writing.
You have quite an idea of what is going on here after reading the blurb. Veronica has just gotten out from an abusive relationship and found herself with no roof over her head and no money in her bank account. Her night in shining armor Nico Langetti offers her a deal she cannot refuse. Being his fake fiancee has its perks: a mamma whose food is amazing, a great place to live, a very expensive engagement ring and equally expensive wedding dress.
The short length does not give way for too much expanding plot wise, but the nice mamma Langetti brings the two closer and closer. I liked how Nico managed to behave properly, despite his wishes and reputation and how Vero tried to maintain her distance outside their charade. The author treats the abusive relationship topic with the seriousness it deserves and I appreciate this a lot.
While I did enjoy the plot and the fake fiancee trope, I feel like it could have been better developed and with a better dialogue. The characters felt a little quick on the built, but I put this on the short length. I did not manage to understand until now why Veronica was so stubborn and not willing to press charges. In the begining, she was ready to give up her savings even though the thief was so close by. I did not understand this. So I can safely say that I managed to understand and appreciate Nico better than her.
From writing perspective, we have the story told from 2 POVs - our main characters'. However, when we have Veronica's part of the story, it shifts sometimes to third person, even if 90% of the time we have first person. It's a bit confusing. Also, in the end, both characters rely on their friends. While this is good that we get to see a little of what is expected to come or what happened with the previous couples in the series, we get as well a repeat of the previous pages, in a briefer way. Each character is retelling a part of the story to their friends and ... For such a short length, I do not need a recap.
All in all, I may not have fully enjoyed the story, but I do see the potential in it. I saw there are better reviews out there so I believe it was not the proper book in the series for me. Based on the last pages, there are some interesting couples out there, each dealing with different issues. Book 4 deals with abusive relationships and their consequences not only on the parties involved, but their friends as well. 3 stars on my end.
