What can readers learn about personal transformation from Jesus turning water to wine? How does His feeding of the five thousand refocus their own call to serve?
In Fresh Eyes on Jesus’ Miracles, Pastor Doug Newton finds hidden truths in the gospels’ most familiar stories. From the wedding at Cana to Peter’s miraculous catch, Newton offers cultural context, modern-day insights, and spiritual depth to awaken even the most seasoned reader’s heart and mind. Most importantly, he equips readers to study Scripture with a fresh perspective—and join God’s miraculous work in their most ordinary moments.
This book makes a bold claim: to see the miracles of Jesus with fresh eyes. These miracles are firmly fixed in the imagination of any Christian who has been going to church and heard the stories of the lame man walking or the feeding of the five thousand or the water turned into wine. Here’s the amazing fact with this book: Doug Newton pulls off his bold claim.
FRESH EYES ON JESUS’ MIRACLES is a riveting and innovative look at the familiar stories. The book contains ten well-know Jesus miracles. The combination of personal insights, looking at the Bible with fresh eyes, probing personal questions and a short personal prayer, make this book a page-turner. I finished the book cover to cover in a weekend and loved it. I highly recommend this book for individuals and also for small groups.
This is an excellent book. After reading Misreading Scripture With Western Eyes (or is it Through Western Eyes...) I decided to read books which focused on understanding the Bible by knowing the culture it was written to initially. That lead me to Kenneth E Bailey and Lois Tverberg, both excellent authors who I learned a ton from. I have realized just how much of my scripture understanding comes from tradition rather than what the text says and with that in mind I have continued my study.
Along comes this book on sale that Book Bub told me about. I was a bit leery because as much as I want to read things with fresh eyes I don't want to read things with heretical eyes and it is something to be careful of. I bought the book though and really, really got a lot out of it. I made a lot of highlights and am going back through now re-reading those and downloaded the app. I have lots to read and study now.
Have bought the other two books to read of his as well.
There’s always a potential danger with using strategies like “put yourself in the disciples shoes” to interpret scripture—there can be a great deal of conjecture and it often looks through the lens of me and my culture instead of biblical culture. But in this book the risk is worth the reward. Only once or twice did I feel that hesitancy; in a number of chapters there were significant insights that really helped me put fresh eyes on scripture, looking at Jesus’s miracles in a new way.
I liked the challenges at the end of each chapter for further thought. I liked that the author invites the reader to come to his website and compare their perspectives and insights (even though I probably won’t)—an open door to conversation and other perspective. I will read the other two books in this author’s series.
I’m not convinced Newton is correct in all his interpretations, but I acknowledge that I have benefited significantly by reading his alternative perspective. I am reluctant to throw my support behind him, but I cannot refuse it to him altogether. I will say that I think this book is of most value to those who, like me, have grown up in the Church and are accustomed to hearing Jesus’ miracles explained in the common/traditional way.
Eye opening, mind boggling, makes one think why didn't I see these miracles like this? Could it be that because of all the technology we've forgotten how to think for ourselves. Or maybe we're too lazy & accept what we're told by our "spiritual seminary trained" pastors & teachers rather than actually study Scripture for ourselves. Think about it.
Newton sheds new light on familiar passages always revealing the loving heart of Jesus. I looked forward to each chapter and learned new insights with each one.
I've been reading, studying and processing Scripture well over a decade. This book has opened my eyes to new ways to do these things. I'm very happy to have found this teaching!! I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.
I have read and enjoyed all three of the Fresh Eyes series. Mr. Newton makes me think in new ways. I will be watching for more books by this excellent Christian author.
