Ternyata... hahaha
Cuma agak kesel aja di endingnya pas Sakakibara udah tau 'orang matinya siapa' jadi terlalu banyak kalimat isi pikiran dia dan bikin gregetan sumpah 😬

I watched the anime for this light novel a few years ago and I was very intrigued by the light novel when I discovered it had one but then, for years, the books lay in my tbr and didn't see light (pun intended?) until now.

This book has a writing style that's a bit...too much, as in, it explains too much, even when it's not needed. This was even more apparent in the second part of the novel because though, there wasn't much happening in the second part, it still dragged on and on. I think it's fair to say that I didn't like the writing style very much.

The plot, itself, on the other hand wasn't as bad. It was pretty decent as a mystery actually but there was the whole supernatural angle that was left a bit too vague and ambiguous that I didn't quite enjoy. It was creepy and atmospheric, to be sure, but not exactly solidly structured. In fact, the whole time I kept wondering why they couldn't just have removed third year class 3. Like once the students advanced from second to third, just divide the class 3 students between the other classes and not have it at all. I don't think they ever even acknowledged it as a possibility.

And, the characters, most of them were bare sketches apart from the main ones like Mei and Kouichi. Teshigawara, Kazami and Mochizuki had some traits but they were mostly two-dimensional. As a matter of fact, I wasn't even very taken in by our narrator, Kouichi. The only character that really interested me was Mei Misaki. I wouldn't say I liked her but I did enjoy reading about her.

The thing that irked me the most about this book (as a whole) though was that the author didn't provide us with a very important bit of information until the end, which made the mystery unsolvable. Even though, I had watched the anime and knew the ending, I couldn't connect a specific plot twist until it was right in my face, which honestly annoyed me so much because it's quite clear that the author did it to keep us on our toes and still away from the final answer.

Overall, I would say the book is okay. Not the best mystery I've ever read. It's creepy, for sure, and I like it for the most part but it had also some glaring problems that kept me from enjoying it completely.

Bottom line: A good attempt at mystery but not the best.

Let me say Alhamdulillah. Finished 😆

So hmm 3.7⭐ actually

I kinda hesitant to make it into 4⭐ on goodreads haha, but well let's make it a bonus for the author's hardworking.

This book is better than the first book. The author is really good at making the reader feels a lot of goosebumps along the story. Not recommended to read this book at night or if you are alone at home!

Well at first, i want to give this book 4.2⭐, but sadly i couldn't because there's an information that the author didn't inform at the very first place. And it really reduced the enjoyment to guess the plot twist. Because of that, i feel that the plot twist is really bland and not mind-blowing.

So yeah, not a big fan. But thankyou author for your hardworking! Hope your next work will be better!💜

Ini reviewnya buat dua buku, Another I dan Another II.

I love these book. Dua-duanya beneran page turner banget. I finished reading both books in one day.

Wow. I devoured this book, I couldn't stop reading it, and I read through both volumes within two days. I remembered from the time I watched the anime that the ending was messy. But the things that bothered me about the anime didn't appear in the book at all - and that's why I finally really like the ending. The resolution is still the same and my heart still grieves over it. I can only warmly recommend it to people who have a soft spot for horror and mystery - not “in your face” horror, but a wonderfully linguistically created testament to tension, fear and panic. Am I overhyping this? Probably - and honestly, some things could've been resolved much quicker if some characters just *spoke*, but I still really loved this. Those are 14/15 year olds confronted with death, after all.

SPOILER:

The phanomenon persists. Somehow I love that more than the fact that a cure has suddenly been found. Only the step to shorten the problem has been revealed - and whether future classes will ever get this information is open to question.

I already watched the anime years ago,
but reading the novel felt really really good even when I already knew alot of things about it.
But that didn't make it boring or anything.
Really I recommend this novel to everyone even if you watched the anime read it.

WAHH GILA SIHH!

ENDINGNYA BENAR-BENAR TAK TERDUGA!

Ugh, tolong maafkan kurasa aku terlalu berlebihan :D.

Cukup adil dibagi menjadi dua jilid. Tiga perempat dri jilid pertama, pembaca bener2 "dikerjain" sm penulis, dibuat bingung persis seperti bingungnya tokoh utama.

The second volume is definitely better than the first one. But one shouldn't forget that the first one was a build up to the second. If I would have read it as one book the amount of pages building up would seem reasonable. I am glad it ended with a cliffhanger that made me want to get the second book.

The story is really good. It is like nothing I have read before. But this is also the first light novel I read. I am not really familiar with Japanese literature, but this book makes me want to try more. It is full of action and mystery. I was trying to figure out what is next and how it will end through the whole book. And I had a pretty good idea that ended up being completely wrong. The actual ending was much better, it really took me by surprise.

Supernatural mystery stories are hit or miss for me, because the fact that there are supernatural elements means that often, the mystery aspect will lack the internal logic that I need in order to find a mystery satisfying.

To enjoy this story as a mystery, you really need to be willing to buy into the rather absurd supernatural stuff and put up with the contrivances. I totally admit that I am super biased here. If not for the fact that I have mad nostalgia for the anime adaption and am already familiar with Ayatsuji Yukito's works, I'm not sure that I would liked this novel as much as I did as a piece of mystery fiction. I would certainly have found certain writing choices to be frustrating.

Its concept is certainly original (or strange, depending on how you look at it), which I love, but the amount of plot-convenient contrivances required for the story to play out as it does would have been too much for me, if not for my existing love for this story. The story does its best to justify in-universe why all of these contrived events occur, but it will depend on the reader whether or not its justifications are good enough.

Just like how this story follows a (to quote the novel) 'supernatural natural phenomenon', it strikes a bit of a strange balance between being a mystery novel with horror elements and a horror novel with mystery elements. (That description makes sense in my head, I'm not sure if it will make sense to anyone else.) Sometimes, it feels like it wants to be solvable by the reader (many clues are given far ahead of reveals). But at the same time, there are so many supernatural/contrived and therefore illogical/unpredictable elements slowly introduced throughout the story that while individual elements are solvable, I don't really consider the story as a whole as a properly solvable mystery. This isn't a criticism of the novel, just an observation. Stories don't need to necessarily fit into an genre box.

This isn't really part of the review, just some thoughts from me about the novel vs anime: (None of these are criticisms of the novel, just my biased opinions as an anime watcher first and foremost)

- The anime starts deviates from the novel for episode 8, before returning to the story, adding in a beach episode because... Anime. The episode serves to add in a bit of extra clarity regarding the parameters of the curse, but is otherwise just for fun.
- I'd heard that the final act of the story was changed for the anime adaption, but I was still a bit surprised. I think that both endings were good, and the important elements are not really changed, but since I had pre-existing expectations, I felt like something was missing from the novel.
- Related to the above point, I was surprised by the the novel's Kazami. Again, it felt like something was missing due to my pre-existing expectations
- As much as I didn't like Akazawa in the anime, I was a little sad that she's barely present in the novel. Even if I didn't care for her, she was still a big part of the anime, and therefore my nostalgia. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with her I guess.
- Overall, on the topic of the anime, I'm really impressed with it as a fairly faithful adaption. I think that in particular, it did an incredible job with the visual design and the soundtrack. (The notes at the end of the book mention that the author was inspired by ALI PROJECT, so it's awesome that they ended up doing the anime OP!)
- Of the 3 main elements that were added in the anime, I thought that one (changing up the final act) was a good choice . The other two changes, while quite 'meh' to me, were completely understandable choices (turning Akazawa into a main character, and the addition of the beach episode). As someone who's watched more than my fair share of disappointing anime/drama adaptions, I'm happy with it.

I rambled a lot here, this isn't so much a review as it is me just expressing my rambling thoughts on the story.

What it comes down to is that I think this is a very unique and interesting story. It's the kind of novel that I personally enjoy, but would kinda hesitate to recommend to most people. I'm really glad I finally got around to reading it!

Definitely the pacing in this was better than the first half, which I intensely disliked because of the constant interruptions that prevented the narrator/reader from learning about the truth. This second half is more action and less explaining and waffling, although there's still some of that here to drag out the runtime.

So we learn that the only way to stop the cursed deaths from going until graduation is to find the extra person or casualty and kill them. So with a bunch of extra rules, this is like Mafia now. People in the group randomly die until the "killer" is identified and killed, except in here the "killer" doesn't actually kill people with their own hands. It's their very presence in the classroom that brings misfortune to all those in their vicinity in Third Year Class 3, because they're an anomaly. They're already dead, but their deaths have been wiped or altered from everyone's memories until the cursed year is over.

Unfortunately, the way it's set up, you cannot possibly figure out the key twist behind the book until the very end, because a very important piece is withheld from you. That is, that the assistant teacher Ms. Mikami and the narrator's aunt Reiko are the same person. I was suspicious of both of them, but it really was not possible to connect the two unless maybe you overanalyzed it to death, as it did mention they both are artists and that the senile grandpa mentioned both his daughters died. However, these clues are too subtle and it's pretty obvious the author didn't intend for you to figure it out until he finally revealed it to blow your mind. I wasn't mind blown though. My reaction was like, oh, that makes sense, but how were we supposed to guess that without knowing the fourth rule and without knowing why the narrator was so awkward with his aunt?

I would say it was an enjoyable read but because of how two dimensional every single character is, it lacks reread value. The most successful aspect of the mystery was Mei Misaki because of how weird and mysterious she is, with her doll eye that can see death. Can she be trusted? When the other characters die, you don't feel anything, because they're not really people. Just another death to add to the growing list of deaths. Besides the death of their homeroom teacher, I cannot recall any other deaths that happened until the climax, where eight people die all at once in the same location.

To be honest, I'm far more interested in the unanswered question of why did the female caretaker go on a murder spree all of a sudden. Was this something that has ever happened in the 25 years preceding this cursed year? Because it according to Mr. Chibiki, the deaths usually happen in pairs, very rarely eight in one night. And usually it's due to illness, accidents, or suicides, NOT getting slaughtered by a knife-wielding maniac. And another thing, the person who belonged to this class already died, but his grandparents were the additional fatalities here. They did so much explaining of the rules of the curse, but I'd always assumed that the classmate (or family member) who dies cannot have tragedy strike another time in their family again. Maybe that was a wrong assumption, after all. I mean, in the first half, the girl's class representative and her mother both died, but they died at roughly the same time and on the same day. But here, we have the classmate dead for several months, and then his grandparents die at the end of the book. There have been no mentions of more than two members in one family affected by the curse, with such a large gap in time between their deaths. This is also an anomaly.

Anyway, it was pretty obvious from the start that both the unreliable narrator and Mei were huge red herrings, so I never thought they were the extra person. By near the start of this second half, I already suspected Ms. Mikami, due to the frequency she's mentioned but how she doesn't actually contribute to anything. I was suspicious of Reiko, too, but couldn't figure out why. So the end made sense to me, I'd just rather the narrator revealed it earlier, because in the grand scheme of things, the two people being the same person really doesn't make it any more obvious they are the extra person. That's just my opinion though.

Looking forward to continuing this series with the next two books left!

One day, Yomiyama North Middle School lost a beloved member of the infamous Class 3-3. The students were so heartbroken by this loss, they carried on pretending as if she were still alive. Unknown to the students, they have unintentionally invited the spirits of the dead into their school by treating the dead as if they were still alive.

Years later, a bizarre curse now looms over the school, where a cursed student enters every odd year. If this cursed student is not discovered and dealt with in a timely manner, mysterious deaths and constant misfortune will visit randomly selected members of the school until the cursed student has been removed. Koichi Sakakibara believes that either he or a mysterious girl he meets at the hospital one night may just be the cursed student this year, or it could potentially be something far more complicated.

Another definitely has an interesting setup. The creepy gothic atmosphere of a cursed school. The classic ghost story vibes. The eerie undertones of old urban legends coming to life. There’s some really cool stuff in here that slowly evolves into an interesting conclusion that can be difficult to solve.

Unfortunately, I think the series is held back by quite a few shortcomings. It has a cast of bland characters that speak in robotic wooden dialogue. The pacing is dragged out far beyond necessary. The cryptic manner in which all the characters talk to each other often feels more awkward, vague and annoying rather than actually being disturbing or unsettling. Much of the logic revolving around the curse also feels made up on the spot which makes the mystery elements feel inconsistent and impossible to solve since they constantly change on the fly.

Another is a fairly good gothic supernatural mystery, but often suffers from its own cryptic nature and inconsistent mythology.

My rating: 2.9/5

Kesialan Sakakibara berlanjut ...
Setelah terkuak tentang kutukan kelas 3-3, fokus ceritanya menjadi 'bagaimana cara mengatasi kutukan'.
