Moonstone Chronicles #1

The Witch of Shadowmarsh

Rate this book
When the fate of the elves rests on the shoulders of an antisocial swamp witch, will a common enemy be enough to bring two disparate races together? The Empire rules with an iron fist. The Valeroot elves have barely managed to survive, but at least they’re not Arthali witches like Elmerah. Her people were exiled long ago. Just a child at the time, her only choice was to flee her homeland, or remain among those who’d betrayed their own kind. She was resigned to living out her solitary life in a swamp until pirates kidnap her and throw her in with their other captives, young women destined to be sold into slavery. With the help of an elven priestess, Elmerah teaches the pirates what happens to men who cross Arthali witches, but she’s too late to avoid docking near the Capital. While her only goal is to run far from the political intrigue taking place within, she finds herself pulled mercilessly into a plot to overthrow the Empire, and to save the elven races from meeting a bloody end.Elmerah will learn of a dark magical threat, and will have to face the thing she fears the duplicitous older sister she left behind, far from their home in Shadowmarsh. The Witch of Shadowmarsh is the first installment in the Moonstone Chronicles, an Epic Fantasy series suitable for all ages.

I read this book, because it was recommended by another author in his newsletter. It turns out, we don't agree on what makes fantastic reading. :)
The story was good enough, and it was even interesting for the most part, but epic, no, and definitely not something that would cause me to not stop reading until I was finished. There are some books I can't put down until I finish them, but this book wasn't one of them.
However, hype aside, this was a decent book, and one I'd not mind reading at all if I'd run across it myself, so there is that. I'm mildly curious as to where the story goes from here, but not enough to worry about it. If I run across the next book in the series, then I'll pick it up when it's out, but otherwise, it didn't hook me enough to make me need to continue with the series, though I'll certainly do so if the opportunity presents itself.

This story begins with the MC busting out of her shackles while on a slave ship. Some foolish pirates thought it was a good idea to try and sell off an Arthali witch. Oh how wrong they are! Elmerah then proceeds to reluctantly free the other young women who are chained up.

And I say reluctantly because Elmerah is a rather self serving person and cares not for others. Arthali witches are relatively hated by most, so she in return dislikes them. However after being scolded by a Faerune elf named Saida, Elmerah sets the ladies free. Then she and Saida fight their way through the mass of pirates.

After winning the battle, the group of women go off in their own little boat to the capital, while Elmerah and Saida uneasily make their way into the main city. Caution is mandatory at this point because it may not be safe for either of them to be there. Arthali and Faerune elves are a minority in the human Empire and prejudices from the past run deep. Saida has been to the capital with her parents once before, but her family was well guarded. Now that she is alone, how safe is she really?

And why would someone want to kidnap her? Elmerah thinks the same thing, especially after finding a couple scrolls in the pirate captain’s cabin. Her sister Rissine sent out the order to have both her and Saida captured, but why? What does she want? There is bad blood between them so surely this can’t be good. And somehow Saida is involved in all of this too, but Elmerah can’t imagine what her sister would want with a Faerune elf. Something strange is going on and it’s making the grumpy witch antsy.

Hesitantly, they both decide stick together for the sake of safety and answers. On their journey, the two keep bumping into a mysterious Valeroot elf that seems intent on helping them. The fellas named is Alluin, and he maintains that he just wants to keep them safe. Which appears to be the truth once he identifies Saida as being a priestess of her people. Though once again, why would a Valeroot elf stick out his neck for a Faerune elf? Well the answer to that question is a complicated one.

Alluin knows a lot about the corrupt ongoings of the capital, but he has no idea how bad it really is until the girls follow him into the city. Then soon enough nasty plots come to light and everything goes butts up! Political backstabbing and mystery rule this story, and it’s all due to the machinations of one power hungry Emperor.

Terrible actions have been set in motion, and both Saida and Elmerah are stuck in the thick of it. The King wants them both for his nefarious purposes and will do all that he can to obtain them. Feeling honor bound to see this through, Alluin stands by them, even though it would be wise to run. And that is the core plot line of the story. Which I have to say isn’t bad!

I was actually pretty entertained while reading this book as it’s full of action, adventure and excitement! One of the few things I wasn’t a fan of though was Elmerah’s temperament as she’s kind of a bitch, however there is a surprisingly good side to this.

As the story goes forward, the author details the witch’s change of heart. And thank goodness for that! If Elmerah’s heart never changed, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed this book as much as I did. Plus it really shows that this author has talent! Many nowadays don’t know how to properly evolve their characters as the story goes on, so kudos to Roethle!

The other thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was all the back and forth and back and forth. First it’s to the capital, then away from the capital and then it’s back to the capital again. Make up your mind people! Also the flip flopping bad guy thing. Is Rissine evil or not? What about her faithful minion? I of course do not trust Rissine and her goons, so I was a bit perplexed by the whole 180 her character seemingly does. It was a bit odd!

Other than those few instances, the book's pretty great! The ending leaves a lot a things up in the air and really sets up for a big showdown in the second novel. Unless of course our three heroes and a new unlikely friend can help stave it off by finding a very important person. If they’re lucky. But this is a series, so we all know they won’t be that lucky and the journey will not be easy. Can't wait!

The writing is pretty and the story is nice as well, but I think that it's just to young adult for me. The story is just so "naive" that it was actually annoying me.
I had a very hard time reading it, and after having fought my way about halfway through I decided not to bother anymore. Sure, I could struggle my way through to the end, but why? When I didn't really enjoy it.

I'm sure a lot of people are going to love it, but it's not for me.

3.5 ish. I thought this was a really good start for the series. The flawed FMC, Elmerah, was a bad A and a snarky thief, but also damaged and was out for #1 which was a surprising twist. It was an enjoyable read with lots of action.

Elmerah one of the last shadowmarsh witches, only wants to be left alone. She is tired and angry at being racially persecuted and now cares only for herself. We start with Elmerah being kidnapped to be sold in the slave trade. She makes an unexpected ally of fellow Prisoner Saida an elf and gains a whole world of problems. It seems as though they stumble into a major uprising, betrayals, and some horrid luck, and some even scarier allies. I’m not really sure yet we’re this is headed yet to many loose ends here in this book.

Despite the multiple POVs I feel like the characters have a lot more development to come but I feel like the author is moving them along at a pretty steady rate. We are missing a lot of backstory and it’s a little slow in coming but I feel like the characters are striving for it now so I’m trying to be patient.

Still to many unanswered questions. We weren’t exactly left with a cliffhanger but the book does kind of end abruptly with hardly anything resolved yet. I’ll have to read the next one and see where this is going.

This is the first book in the Moonstone Chronicles; it is a book full of magic, adventure, treachery, deceit and camaraderie. The unlikely heroes are Elmirah, the Arthali Witch, Saida the Faerune elven priestess, Alluin a Valeroot elf and Merwyn an Akkeri elf, these were pitched together through circumstances beyond their control but now they have decided to do their utmost to bring down the empire. They want to kill the emperor and his second in command and in their place to put Isara Saredoth. The Emperor has betrayed the elves of Faerune and has allied with the Dreilore and the Nokken who were ready to cause havoc on the Faerune. The world building is amazing and the characters are so lovable, Siada so kind and naïve, Alluin so heroic and always wanting to do what is honourable and loyal, Merwyn kind and such an idealist and Elmirah brash and angry yet with her heart in the right place even though she wants no one to realise this. Each of our heroes had their own aim to reach yet they decided to work together, one wished to lift his people’s curse, one wished to save her homeland, one would fight for what was right and one just wanted to seek adventure. For better or worse they had become allies with a common cause to bring down the empire. Can our heroes see this through? We will have to wait for book 2 to find out as the adventures continue! Sword and sorcery at it’s very best.

I have read a few of Sara’s books/series and they are all really good reads, this one is great as well.
Pirates kidnap Elmerah,a shadow witch living in the Marshes, also kidnaped is a Faerune priestess, Saida, the two band together to overthrow the pirates and escape. THAT is just the beginning of their adventure. They meet up with Alluin, a Valeroot elf, and later Merwyn, an Akkeri elf,(he stinks like fish).A band of strangers join together to save each other and the lives of other people.
It has a lot of adventure, it just flows from one scene to the next.I really enjoyed this story, and liked the characters straight up, you didn’t have to warm to them.
I will definitely be reading the next book.(hope it’s not to far away).
Recommended reading if you love other worlds, witches,Fae, Magic, fantasy and bad emperors.

The story had an exciting beginning, enough to persuade me to buy the book after finishing the free sample. However, after that exciting beginning things quickly deteriorate. At 20% in our three main characters have separated and are actively distrusting and disliking each other. I'm not really sure where the plot of this book is trying to lead us. One character has kind of a goal, but the other two don't. Then I realized - this feels like someone decided to novalize their D&D game at a YA reading level. And it just isn't working.

A very good story to begin the series, I like this author and the premise of this intrigued me. It is very political but because there are different creatures and magic, it has that fantasy edge to it.
I think the author brought the main character group together seamlessly and did not overwhelm us with too many main characters, and the supporting characters didn't overshadow them. This is so important because sometimes when you have 25 main characters it's just too hard to follow.
The story didn't end on a cliff hanger but you know there's definitely going to be more parts because the quest has not been completed yet.
I will continue the series and recommend it

Sara does it again.

I loved The Tree of Ages series, and the latest installment as a break away in that series as well. This book is just as enthralling, the characters just as diverse, and the storyline just as riveting. From the very first chapter you are drawn in so that you might think you'll finish this last chapter before going to bed but instead find yourself turning the pages long after. There are some moments that seem slightly contrived, such as the addition of a particular character that I predict will serve as a sort of dues ex machina in the future, but with his added background it doesn't seem to terribly far fetched. There are also moments that leave you scratching your head a bit as the lead does something out of character. Really though those few rare moments only serve to highlight the complexity of the character, which enrich the story immensely as it makes it hard to guess what her next move might be. And really, who likes one dimensional characters that can be easy out into a box? No one who is a fan of Roethle's books for sure. This is definitely worth a read, whether you're a fan of Roethle's previous books or simply a fantasy fan, particularly a fan of fantasy with strong female leads, this book will entertain. And if you haven't already read Sara Roethle's Tree of Ages series check it out, it is equally complex and entertaining, with the benefit that you need not wait 3 months for the second book!

This book started out with such potential. It quickly went downhill with characters that did not connect, a weak plot, and just overall lack luster.

The witches of Shadowmarsh are supposed to be these strong, magic filled women. But Jesus; Elmara swings her sword a few times and she's out of steam.... AFTER THEY ALREADY HYPED HER UP AS SO STRONG.

Anyway, I made it halfway through before I realized I was forcing myself to read it. And there are too many good reads (no pun intended) for me to unhappily endure a book that I do not like.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.25 stars)

The first book in a completed six-part series, The Witch of Shadowmarsh blends adventure, quiet tension, and moments of unexpected warmth. It follows Elmerah Volund, a witch from the exiled Arthali clan who has spent years hiding from her past—until she’s captured by pirates and sold into slavery alongside Saida, an elven priestess. Their escape sets off a chain of events that forces Elmerah to confront who she is, what she believes in, and the dangerous world she thought she’d left behind.

Elmerah is a fierce yet complex heroine—sharp, guarded, and unflinchingly determined. She’s not always easy to like, but that’s what makes her feel so real. I loved watching her journey from wary outsider to someone who begins to find her place and her purpose. Saida provides calm and moral balance, while Alluin, a loyal elf with quiet depth, adds heart to the group. What starts as a duo gradually grows into a five-person party, and I loved watching how their dynamics shift and evolve as trust builds and secrets come to light. The relationships—whether fraught, tender, or uneasy—give the story a richness that deepens with every chapter.

The worldbuilding feels immersive and lived-in, with a unique elemental magic system and a steady pace that keeps the story engaging without feeling rushed. Roethle blends adventure, danger, and heartfelt moments beautifully, and the tone—while dark in places—has an almost cosy fantasy feel. It’s not as heavy or intense as Quicksilver, Blood Over Bright Haven, or The Empyrean Series, which is why I held off giving it full 5 stars, but it is still intriguing with good development for the beginning of a series, and was exactly the kind of story I needed.

Beneath the adventure, Roethle explores themes of power, prejudice, belonging, and self-determination. The tension between races and magic users reflects real-world struggles with fear and control, giving the book a grounded emotional core that lingers after you finish.

Final thoughts: The Witch of Shadowmarsh is a quietly powerful start to a series that balances emotion and magic with ease. It’s full of danger and defiance, but also hope, found family, and healing. I’m really looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a fantasy series that's not as heavy or intense as Quicksilver or The Empyrean series.

3.5. The MC, Elmerah, was ridiculously fun and chaotic, and the rest of the book was interesting enough.

- “There’s no way I’m going in there,” Saida balked. “He’ll kill us as soon as we’re trapped.” Elmerah snorted. The girl had some self-preservation instincts after all. “You go first. If you meet your end, I will avenge you.”
- Elmerah drew her cutlass, debating whether or not to give the men a fighting chance. One man drew his sword then spat at her feet. It was a short debate.
- He sighed. “I’ll give you more Valeroot wine.” She crossed her arms and pouted. “I already have a new bottle in my pocket. If I go in there, your uncle will take it away from me.” He swiped his palm across his face, shaking his head. “Of course you do. We need to get you a coat with shallower pockets.” “I like my coat just fine.”
- “No offense meant, but I have absolutely no intention of journeying to Faerune.” She glanced at the Akkeri. “And I’d wager Merwyn feels the same, if he has any sense of self-preservation,” she looked Merwyn up and down as he came to his feet, “which is admittedly doubtful.”
- Thera chuckled. “You two are quite alike.” “Now, now,” Elmerah cautioned, “let’s not start throwing insults. I’ll have to start comparing you to ugly wyrms and trolls.”
- Elmerah placed a hand on his shoulder, an unusual display of affection . . . no, wait, she was just using him to keep herself standing.

Good but missing some elements

The start is good, but there is not really enough description about various elves and witches backstory at the start. I like the action, but it was both treated as a “normal” occurrence and was placed in awkward points in the story where violence didn’t fit in well. It’s like the author was trying to bring in readers with action yet had no idea how to do it.

I like how the main characters is portrayed as “wanting to get away” like people would in real life. On the other hand, this divides the characters apart before they even really know each other or the reader knows them. Obviously the characters have very important backstories, but we never learn what it is for the entire book. I get this is a way to make us read on, but the author does the “mysterious past thing” in a very inexperienced way. The characters have decently shown relationships but those are changing way too quickly.

The writing is not bad. However, there are many awkward and weird plot choices. The many POVs work out well but don’t tell us enough all the time. The writing style is generally emotionless and doesn’t give too much motivation to read on.

Unremittingly dreary, but....

It starts with a distinctly unlikable main character, continues with multiple races all hating each other to the point of murder (not to mention killer sibling rivalries), and finally fails to have a single scene that is beautiful or cheerful. I almost gave up after half a dozen chapters, it was just so depressing. But that's what fantasy is these days...wars, piles of bodies, and single-minded evil. I pressed on and the main character stopped being quite so annoying, and actually gained a little humanity by associating with a few people of more normal temperaments (she's spent the last ten years of her life alone in a swamp). I managed to get through it, and it's a pretty decent book. Diverse world-building, but the characters are only two dimensional at best. Still, there's a lot of variety with at least 4 brands of elves, and as many races of humans, to fill in the gaps. I've decided to go on to the second book.

A nice complicated story.

I enjoyed this fantasy. It was a fast-paced, whirlwind adventure with well thought out world building. This book was told from several POV's. I found it interesting that each chapter (or section) was often told from a different protagonist. There were several subplots and some were not resolved. I guess Sara C. Roethle had to find someway to keep her readers interested enough to purchase the rest of the books in this series, without resorting to a cliffhanger. (Which I HATE.)

I was under the impression that this was a romance, but this book contained no romance. Although there might be something building between two main characters, none of the them showed romantic interest.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Epic Fantasy, Elves, Witches, Magic and Adventure.

I’ve enjoyed other book by Sara C. Roethle so it was an easy decision to try out The Witch of Shadowmarsh, the first of her The Moonstone Chronicles series. I’m glad I did. Elves, witches, pirates, an evil empire, magic, betrayal, intrigue, treachery and, of course, a fantastic lead in Elmerah, the eponymous Witch of Shadowmarsh. Yup, this book has all the best of ingredients, and then they’re cooked to perfection. Pure enjoyment. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

wow!

Ok this author is totally new to me. The book popped up in my you may like suggestions. And this was REALLY good. I only give 5 stars to the really good books, the ones that I can’t put down and that really wow me. Well this is one of them and I hope the rest of the series is even half as good. Interesting, strong (but not obnoxious) characters. A very interesting world, magic and inhabitants. An epic quest with a hint of possible romance coming. And add in characters that are adults with adult concerns but is about more than sex. Well you may have the perfect book for me. It was also very well written, I didn’t notice any errors or typos (those usually throw me out of a story), and the dialogue was realistic. I definitely recommend this one!

Fire And Lightning

What is more formidable than an Arthali witch? Two Arthali witches! Elmerah is looking for her older sister, Rissine. Does she want to have a sisterly talk with her, or does she want to kill her? A Moon Priestess, Saida, helps and is in turn helped by Elmerah in escaping from pirate slavers. Alluin, a Valeroot elf, meets both at an inn and ends up involved as well. Merwyn, an Akkeri, becomes Saida's protector. All in all a rather diverse group. I like the action, Elmerah's snarky dialogue, and the hint of romance. Will Elmerah discover the Emperor's secret? I look forward to the next book.

I found a grammatical error almost right away, and it had me questioning the rest of the writing. I felt the beginning was a bit hard for me to get into personally, but I kept going and glad I did. The book quickly goes from single POV to dual, to trio, as certain characters are introduced into the story. I felt it was very easy to picture the story and could've easily finished the book in a few hours. I love that there are 2 strong female leads that have different strengths. I also appreciate that they're written to mesh so well with Alluin, and none of the characters dampen the others.

I have read four books into this series so far so I will do a quick review of those together. Honestly, I have had a great time listening and reading this series. I do wish the last three books had audible editions but even so, reading them is going to be enjoyable anyway.

I am curious to see where it leads and I kind of love that it made it seem like one character was the big bad but really, he was almost what I would consider a distraction from the real shit storm coming. Time will tell but I am definitely interested to see where this goes next in book 5!!

Acquired taste

This definitely had some action. The characters have their own bitterness and hatred to deal with which comes to a head because of the emperor. There was no romance which is a bummer because it would have added some intense emotion to this story. I mean don’t get me wrong I felt for the elf and his family. I thought that was horrible but that was the only strong emotion that this story brought forth.

Wow! Very reminiscent of Terry Brooks

Well-written storyline and characters, and a nicely defined world. Kept me on the edge of my seat right to the end. What reminded me most of Terry Brooks is the author is brutal to her main characters. They suffer greatly for their cause, and there is serious doubt they will all make it through their quest. Hopefully, that doesn’t give anything away.

Pleasantly surprised!

Honestly, by the cover i didn't think this was going to be one I finished, not being rude, I just read so much that the current trend in "romance the Far way" just doesn't get me enthused but I respect the author & have it a go, glad I did. Enjoyable read, I finished & I'm going on to the next adventure and I really liked the diminutive Akkeri, lol, true hero, ugly but true, & true companions are hard to find, even in books, lol!!!

A fun and engaging read

I enjoyed the first book of Tree of Ages more, but the start of this series was very good and pulled me in quickly. The characters and storyline develop well. I kind of like that there is so much back and forth around who is going where and with whom. It helped to give the characters some depth and allow them to grow into the adventure they are about to embark on in book 2.

What's not to like?

Witches, humans, sea elves, forest elves, posh elves, shapeshifters, guilds, magic, a mad emperor (by my reckoning) and some serious bad guys that I can't even describe what they (you'll just have to read it) What's not to like? Probably not how the author would describe it! A well written story that I am now immediately going to get the second book as I want to see what happens. Aren't those the best.

This was a book with a very different aspect to the normal view of elves and such, which makes for an interesting read. However this book, despite putting down a solid base of characters and who hated who etc did not go anywhere! It seemed like a typical filler exercise in the middle of a series. The characters where going round in circles from A to B and from B to A too much. I will persevere with the second book and hope the plot develops.

The characters are interesting, but I wanted to throw my Kindle multiple times for how often they changed their mind and turned around. It's like they are rubber banded together by their resolve.

Meanwhile the empire of humans seems to be run by anything but humans. Further, all the other fantasy races have powers that make you wonder how in the world they could ever be held at bay by the empire.

Will not read on in this series despite the intrigue.

Totally enjoyed every page

Having got into more magical witchy reads of late having grown bored of the gory x - rated reads I've really enjoyed book 1 and cut wait to read nd in the series. Characters are intriguing and not the typical type usually found but some hav more unusual 'talents'. Story has a slight pirate feel to it but not obviously so. Definitely recommend to 'magic saving the day' enthusiasts....
