"Have you ever wished for more financial freedom? Perhaps you know you should get your finances in order but just don’t know where to start. Maybe you’ve always dreamt of doing your own thing and earning money under your own terms but are too scared to take the leap. Or perhaps you feel trapped in a job that pays the bills but just doesn’t do it for you. You’re not alone.
Our relationship with money is linear; we’re taught more is better, but that’s about it! We rarely question what financial success and freedom mean for us personally or educate ourselves on how to be smart with our money and earn it in the way that we want.
Starting with the most important question ‘what does a plentiful and financially successful life mean to YOU?’, this book will educate and empower the reader with practical activities and digestible advice on the topics of Understanding, Earning, Making, Investing and Spending your money. From getting on the property ladder, negotiating your way through a career pivot, to getting a pay rise, making an investment or starting the business you’ve always dreamed about, this book is a blueprint for financial freedom. Alice Tapper is the author and creator of Go Fund Yourself, a financial news and education platform for young people. Alice is also a money expert on BBC Morning Live and writes a weekly column for Glamour magazine. In 2020 she launched the successful #regulateBuyNowPayLater campaign which led to the FCA’s decision to bring BNPL products under their remit. Alice’s academic background is in behavioural economics, and she has a keen interest in financial inclusion.
I wish Go Fund Yourself had been available when I left school or university. It would have made life so much easier.
I am much older than the intended reader for Go Fund Yourself, but there is so much in it that is relevant for any age group if the reader is still working (which may well be beyond the standard retirement age of 65, if the current economic situation is anything to go by).
Even people over 40 years old may have to change career and in some cases start all over again. It will be a very unusual career trajectory for someone leaving school or university now if they don’t find they have to change not only firms, but also careers, several times within their working life. This is a phenomenon Go Fund Yourselffully embraces, as well as the forward thinking for retirement and with regards to how you might want to live your life and the financial consequences of wanting it all.
As an Instagrammer, Alice Tapper is all too well aware of the power of social media and that the glittering posts on it may not be the gold they appear to be, even though the pictures would have you believe otherwise.
Go Fund Yourself is not a “How To”, in the sense that if you read it cover to cover you will know exactly what to do on your way to becoming the next great entrepreneur. It is a guide which helps you to think about the wider picture in terms of social, political and economic changes and how these are intertwined. Then you can begin to consider intelligent financial strategies.
The aspects of finance are not covered in detail, but there is enough there to get you thinking about where you fit into the scheme of things and pointing you towards researching certain aspects in more detail. This means you will have a better grip on the implications how your financial decisions might affect you. The case studies relating to each subject are particularly helpful in understanding the dynamics of modern work and finances.
This is a helpful financial survival guide for these times. Given that times might change, the backbone of the book is likely to remain solid requiring only the occasional tweak to bring it right up to date. But because of the book’s solid framework it also enables a reader who has absorbed its wisdom to have the flexibility to adapt to social and economic shifts.

I am currently listening to this as an audiobook, and I recommend it.
It is ideal for those that have recently left Uni (early 20s) and want more autonomy and agency over your finances.
Alice puts finances into perspective and in the context of 21st Century. I felt heard. Particularly when she speaks of choosing a career and what we want from our careers.
In terms of the writing style, it is conversational which is why an audiobook is ideal.
If you're living in UK, Go Fund Yourself could be your practical guidance on understanding money, the taxes & what you have to do about it. If you're not, of course, you still could learn the principles but it's not the optimum function of this book.
I read it because I love what's Alicia did in the GFY Instagram account regularly. So perhaps you could go there first if you want to be convinced to read the book. Such a resourceful account!
I think this book is really useful for anybody interested in how to manage your money. The part about your relationship with money is important to cover. She writes in a way that it is easy to grasp and fun to read!
The only downside for me is the focus on the UK, as that is not relevant for me. Other than that, great book!
Introductory book on personal finance that will change your thinking on the topic of money. If you are just starting out, this book might help. If you are experienced in this area, then this book is not for you. It talks money from four different perspectives - Earn It, Start It, Save It, and Invest It.
A very simple, yet impactful personal finance book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading all the way through. The examples used were perfect and all the information was extremely relevant to today's financial set-up.
A very practical finance book if you're planning to start a business or want to take your finances more seriously. I did not manage to finish the whole thing cause it got a bit too tactical after a while. Might pick it up again next time when I really need it!
DNF at 15%. I was listening to the audiobook and was not recorded well (despite being an official one read by Alice Tapper....) so had to stop, with the booming pft sound happening every couple of minutes sadly.
