The author has created a world where dragons and science fiction meet. The story starts out in horrifying fashion - at least to those in Maass. The story is then shows a strong young woman who takes up the lead to bring people together and bring peace to her land. She is undeterred and finds companions with similar goals. The dragons do become part of her life, and for the betterment of both.
Definitely a pleasant read, almost a dragon cozy mystery if you will.

This was a quick read for me and I enjoyed all of it. I thought the world building was interesting and I liked the main characters. The dialogue was a little stilted but it didn't detract from the story.

Perkins crafts a tale full of adventure with "Dragon Flame." Humans left Earth and settled on the planet Numar. After living in peace for eighteen years, dragons attack the human settlements. With Talei's ability to talk to the dragons, can she stop the havoc they make?

The story opens with a pulse-pounding dragon attack. Talei and her brother, Byron, live in Maass, a human settlement on Numar. After the dragons destroy the village, Talei and the survivors set out to warn the other settlements. Unfortunately, they aren't able to stop the dragons.

Talei's group and the survivors from Deen set up a camp. A survivor named Zach takes over this settlement. Against Zach's wishes, Talei and her brother set out to warn the other communities. Along the way, Talei discovers she can mind talk with the dragons. They are held hostage by a group of goblins called the "Pundra," and are being forced to attack the humans.

Talei meets Adri on the way to Boon. He's willing to help her free the dragons from the Pundras' influence. After mind talking with a dragon name Rafur, Talei's group sets out to travel to the dragon's continent. The adventure draws Talei and Adri close. Will Talei and Adri's attraction prove a distraction as they set about their task to help the dragons?

Perkin's imagination soars with this adventure-filled story. Talei and Adri face many obstacles from the dragons, disbelief from their fellow humans, and an ocean. Perkin's writing is easy to read and the plot moves at a nice clip.

I enjoyed the rich back story of the dragons. They possessed many emotions that the reader can identify with - love, distrust, kindness, and curiosity. Perkins paints vivid pictures of the setting that resonate in the reader's mind.

Talei, while only eighteen, rises to the occasion. She's strong for the young ones, and makes balanced decisions. Her perseverance in the face of hardship and adversity is admirable.

Adri is determined and wants to do the right thing. He's sharp, full of gusto, and not afraid to brave the dangers he faces.

The story is geared for young adults with Adri and Talei sharing a kiss or two. Their romance grows slowly over the course of their adventure along with mutual trust and respect. "Dragon Flame" offers an adventure full of excitement, danger, and sweet romance.

The colonists go off course and end up on a planet suitable to survive in small communities. Talei is the first child born on the new planet. It's a rough, frontier life, but things have been going well until the dragons come.

On the celebratory ship landing day, Talei watches helplessly as dragons burn her parents and neighbors alive. She and her brother manage to escape the devastation and join up with others who survived. The small band find some caves to hide in and send out scouts to see if the other communities have also been attacked. They have, except for Boon, situated on the western coast. Talei and her friends warn the settlers of the dragon attacks and are laughed at. There is no such thing as dragons after all.

The Boon townsfolk learn differently when they're attacked as well. They, however, have a defense not available to the other towns--the space ship on which they arrived on the planet. It provides a shelter to protect them.

During the attack, Talei makes mental contact with one of the dragons. She soon learns that the dragons are not at fault, but are being forced to attack the human colonies by an alien race called the Pundras. With that knowledge, Talei leads a small group to the western continent--the home of the dragons--to help the dragons overcome the Pundra slavers.

Any more and I'd have to hide this review for spoilers.

Talei and Adri are likable, brave, and worthy. The dragons turn out to be noble and willing to partner with the humans to help both races survive.

This is a wonderful adventure story. Dragons and aliens are a great combination, and Sue Perkins does a good job combining the fantasy with the scifi. The second book in the series, Dragon Clans, is already available and I'm going to get my copy soon.

Great, fun read. I recommend the book (and most likely the entire series) to all the YA fantasy/sf readers who like an inventive and gripping adventure story.

Landing Day has always been a happy day, a huge celebration in honor of the day they arrived on this new planet after having left Earth for a better place. Although this year, Landing Day is nothing to celebrate. When an invasion of fire-breathing dragons arrive and destroys everything in their path, only a handful of orphaned children are left. It’s now up to eighteen-year-old Talei to help them survive on their own.

Talei is a remarkable girl. Only just turned eighteen on Landing Day, she's quick to step up and take the lead when needed. Even though the responsibility of caring for so many young children and re-establishing a settlement overwhelms her, she never thinks of throwing her hands up and walking away from it all. She takes her responsibilities to heart and makes things work the best she can. A natural born leader, people will follow her wherever she leads.

Adri is Talei’s natural complement. He’s mellow when she’s uptight, rational when she’s not. Being from a more well-established settlement than Talei, he’s a bit more refined and brings a lot to the table when they meet. His addition to the party makes things more balanced and smoother. Together, they make a great pair of leaders, with democracy at the forefront of their reign.

Dragon Flame is an adventure for all ages! From the first dragon attack to the freeing of the dragons from their captors, you’re glued to the words before you. I found it interesting as to why Talei and her brother, Byron, were the only ones capable of communicating with the dragons at first. A different sort of idea and I think it worked well here, showing how the siblings differed from all the other survivors around them.

A great fantasy for younger teens and adults alike, Dragon Flame is a fun and exciting mix of both fantasy and science fiction.

An interesting and engaging story that mixes a little bit of science fiction with a whole lot of fantasy. There are things that could have been handled a bit better, but overall a very action-packed and enjoyable story for teens and adults alike.
