In the spring of 1995, Nate Cartwright has lost everything: his parents are dead, his older brother wants nothing to do with him, and he's been fired from his job as a journalist in Washington DC. With nothing left to lose, he returns to his family's summer cabin outside the small mountain town of Roseland, Oregon to try and find some sense of direction.

The cabin should be empty.

It's not.

Inside is a man named Alex. And with him is an extraordinary little girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader.

Artemis, who isn't exactly as she appears.

Soon it becomes clear that Nate must make a choice: let himself drown in the memories of his past, or fight for a future he never thought possible.

Because the girl is special. And forces are descending upon them who want nothing more than to control her.

*3.5 stars*

As always, with my reviews of any T.J. Klune book, I'm going to keep this spoiler-free.

I'm struggling with how to rate and review this book, to be honest. While I appreciated TJ's writing, I don't know if I particularly... liked the book all that much. Okay, okay, that might have come out wrong, but... we have to know ourselves and this book wasn't really my kind of story.

What kinds of books do you like to read? What do you enjoy? Well, I love sci-fi, and the brief blurb promising something more than "normal" got my attention. And it's true, this book falls into the sci-fi genre, but it has the anxiety-producing intensity of a thriller. I don't like feeling anxious, and I don't like mysteries or suspense because of it, and this book gave me that same clenching somethingisgoingtohappenomg feeling that I, personally, don't enjoy.

The story relies heavily on momentum to move the plot forwards, and we really don't get to learn too much about the individual characters. I like a really character-heavy story, and while we get a lot of these three together as a unit, I left the story feeling, oddly, like I barely knew them each at all. The story barrels forward, and I felt like I was on a roller-coaster about to go over the edge.

The highlight of the story, for me, was the creative world-building and the intense, careful writing that TJ does so well in his more serious stories. The book is basically serious all the way through, so if you were expecting something light or with bits of humor, this book really doesn't fit that bill. And though I got the gist of what was going to happen fairly quickly, the richness in TJ's storytelling was really beautiful to read. I always, always enjoy his writing and his talent, even when I don't mesh well with a story's vibe.

I missed the intense romantic chemistry that is so present in most of TJ's books. The two male MCs barely got to know one another out of the context of Art, and I really struggled with their romantic connection. The romance was there, but more subtle, and a lot of the attention is more on moving the plot forwards and less on the let's get to know one another. We actually get a couple of sex scenes, but I was too stressed about what was going to happen next to even give them my full attention. The story is really more sci-fi with romantic elements than a focused romance, IMO, and that was just fine with me, but perhaps it's something you should know going into it.

I always take into consideration how quickly I read a story when I come up with my final review. If I can't put a book down, I'll always rate it higher because that addictive readability is so hard to find. I had trouble putting this book down, so, ultimately, I rounded my rating up. However, The Bones Beneath My Skin won't rank in my top T.J. Klune books.

I think Heather and I are on almost the same wavelength where "The Bones Beneath My Skin" was concerned.

Was the story good? Undoubtedly.

Was it what I expected? Debatable.

Was it a romance? Yes.

Was it 'primarily ' a romance. Definitely no.

Did it feel a bit like the love child of Stranger Things and that movie that if I actually named, you'd immediately guess 'how ' Artemis was special? That would be my closest approximation.

I loved the parts of the book when they were at the cabin. Seeing Nate's view of Alex as a cold-blooded killer and Artemis as just some weird little girl do a complete 180, with him ending up adoring them both.

Their time there was very special and the beginnings of what I was hoping to be the development of deep, on-page feelings between Nate and Alex. Like, up to your elbows in feels and love.

Then "The Bad Men " came, all hell broke loose, and the possibility of a the story becoming primarily a romance became over-shadowed by all of the gunfire and *thump-thump-thumping* of Blackhawk helicopters.

So while the action was intense and I couldn't put the book down, I felt as if TJ's signature bone-deep feels and humor were at least partially MIA.

My favorite part of the book was short and totally an info dump, but when Nate and Alex finally made a 'connection' and the full story behind "The Bad Place " was revealed, my eyes were goddamn superglued to my eReader, completely enthralled. The unique way that that happened and the impact it had on me, just... WOW!

I do have to mention that at one point, toward the end, I totally had an, "OMG, they're going to bring out the TRUTH CORN any minute now! " moment. I was smirking nervously through those chapters, God only knows why, but I've seen TJ take plots to weirder places, so I didn't rule it out. ;- )

The story did end with an HEA, so no worries about everyone dying in a hail of machine gun fire. There was also an epilogue from "a long time later on " to help cement the relationship between the MC's, which was a bit more sticky-sweet than the norm.

Long story short, yes, I did enjoy the book quite a bit, but it didn't feel quite as "Uniquely TJ " as most of his other books.

As in, if someone gave me the book with no author name on it, I would strongly 'suspect ' that TJ had written it, but I wouldn't dare be willing to bet my life or my last dime on it, if that makes any sense at all.

I'd rate this story at 4.25 stars and suggest it to anyone looking for a super-strong Sci-Fi read, but warn readers that, for better or worse, this story really is *entirely* different than anything you've read from TJ before.

I'm not generally a fan of “sappy” books, but I will read anything TJ Klune writes without hesitation … and probably even get a little teary-eyed at the end. If you've read his other novels, you likely have a pretty good idea of the basic outline of this one. There's a gay guy. And another gay guy. And a kid. And there's a whole “found family” thing going on. And there's humor. And bacon. Okay, so maybe that last one is a new addition to Klune's repertoire, I don't remember.

This story focuses on one very odd young girl named Artemis Darth Vader and her gruff “bodyguard” Alex. There's also Nate, a disgraced journalist who wants nothing more than to escape from the world for a while. And then they meet up and become a family and everything gets sappy and romantic and heartwarming and I'm not crying, you're crying. I'm not spoiling anything here … I mean, it's a Klune novel, you know it's going to happen sooner or later. But it's also so much more than just sap – there's also secret government agencies and cults and action and conspiracy theorists and comets and maybe even a crashed helicopter or two (or three). It's all fantastically wonderful and sad and hopeful and you should probably read it as soon as possible.

My overall rating: 4.5 stars, rounded up.

This book is recommended for readers who enjoy:
Genre-blending narratives
Found family dynamics
LGBTQ+ representation
Slow-burn romance
Supernatural elements in contemporary settings
Note: For those new to Klune's work, this standalone novel serves as an excellent introduction to his storytelling style while offering something fresh for longtime fans.

The Bones Beneath My Skin by TJ Klune takes readers on a heart-pounding, emotionally charged journey through an unexpected blend of sci-fi thriller, mystery, and an exploration of the human heart. Set in the spring of 1995, the novel pulls us into the life of Nate Cartwright, a man weighed down by grief and loss. With his parents gone and a strained relationship with his brother, Nate's life is at a standstill—until a mysterious encounter at his family's remote cabin shakes him to the core.

At the heart of the story is a strange little girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader (yes, you read that right). With her comes Alex, a man cloaked in secrecy. Their arrival at Nate's cabin turns what he thought would be a quiet retreat into a desperate flight for survival. With cultists and government agents closing in, the novel slowly reveals the complexity of Artemis’ true nature, and Nate is forced to make decisions that will alter his life forever.

Klune excels at creating vivid, multilayered characters that feel painfully real, and Nate is no exception. His struggle with the weight of his past feels deeply personal, but the presence of Artemis and Alex opens the door to something he didn't know he needed—a chance at redemption and the possibility of forming a new kind of family. While there is a subtle romance at play, it takes a back seat to the deeper, more compelling relationships in the book—primarily the one Nate forms with Artemis.

The narrative has moments of pure adrenaline, especially as danger creeps closer. Klune is a master at pacing, though there are sections where the plot meanders a bit, especially during their time on the road. These slower moments, however, serve to deepen the bond between the characters, allowing us to feel their growing connection and investment in each other. And when the action does come, it's as electrifying as you'd hope, with helicopters, gunfire, and a climactic reveal that will leave you breathless.

For those expecting a typical Klune romance, this novel might feel a bit different. The romantic undertones are there but subdued, with the primary focus being the found family dynamic and the emotional journey of Nate coming to terms with his past. Klune’s signature blend of wit and heart is still very much present, but this time it’s wrapped in a darker, more suspenseful package.

Overall, The Bones Beneath My Skin is a thrilling, moving ride. It might take a little time to fully immerse yourself in the sci-fi elements, but once you do, you’ll be rewarded with a story that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit. For anyone craving a gripping blend of supernatural suspense and deep emotional resonance, this book is a must-read.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Tor Publishing Group for sharing this re-releasing romantasy’s digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest opinions.

Unpopular opinion incoming.

If this book had been written by another author, the reviews would more accurately reflect the overall quality of the book. However, the ratings are skewing higher because this was written by T.J. Klune. This book was dull, repetitive, unoriginal, and overwritten. Not to mention there’s an explicit sex scene with no reason to be in the book. The characters in the sex scene had no romantic connection that the reader could see, and the scene also came out of nowhere and did nothing to advance the plot.

This book is tagged as romance but it’s nothing remotely close. The book is E.T. with a sex scene, a cult, and lots of violence. None of this would bother me in another book — when put together like it is here, and written the way it is, it makes for an unpleasant reader experience.

Every single book I have read by this author was magical...no lie. That includes this piece of awesomeness right here !! I am ashamed to say, I was a bit worried ,when I read the blurb... I mean it is a bit vague, and Artemis Darth Vader ...what does that mean ??!! Shouldn't have worried...I should never worry when it comes to TJ, he is a sure thing :P

https://www.google.com/search?biw=1517

Now I am gonna be mean and keep my review vague as well. I know TJ doesn't like spoilers and I do worship the altar he writes on... I also think this is a story you should jump into blind... It is much more enjoyable that way.

Animated GIF

I can honestly say, that I didn't expect anything that happend in this story, but I sure loved every second of it. It wasn't like any other book I have read before. I was captivated the second I started reading, and I finished it in one go... I am still processing, while writing this review...

Animated GIF

I laughed and I cried (wookie-cry face) and I closed it with a big smile on my face...

That is all you are getting from me... I am sorry ;)

I advice everyone to go and "one click" this one, as soon as you can. You won't regret it !!!

I just never met a TJ book I didn’t love. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I feel safe in his words knowing that by the end of the book, I’ll have a new found family or wonderful MC’s to adore.
This book is not what I expected it to be about, and Artemis was such a fun character to experience.

I think Kirt Graves did an amazing job, and even though I always struggle to disassociate his voice from the Green Creek boys, once that initial adjustment is over… you just realise how perfect his narration is for the characters that TJ creates.

I have so much to say, and no brain thoughts to express it properly but I’m so glad we have this silly lil story of men kissing-falling in love, and that bacon exists. 🥓

Finely layered and deeply poignant, The Bones Beneath My Skin was like no other book that I’ve read in the past. From the action-packed game of cat-and-mouse to the dynamite characters, I was quickly—and easily—sucked into the story. But it was the overriding found family premise that had me feeling all of the feels. Taking three seemingly disparate individuals and bringing them together in a thoughtful, emotional way, I was even driven to tears before I reached the last page. That’s not to say, however, that my adrenaline didn’t spike as explosions, gun battles, and chase scenes took center stage. After all, there were plenty of chills and thrills as this trio took to the road and fled for their lives.

Those characters, in fact, happened to be the special sauce to this genre-bending novel. From a seemingly gruff, closed-off man to his quirky, endearing charge, I couldn’t get enough of all of the realistic, true-to-life personas. Add in the genuinely flawed yet root-for-able protagonist as well as a villain straight out of an action movie script, and I was utterly head over heels. All together, they took my emotions on a rollercoaster ride all of their own. From fear to hope and everything in between, I was over the moon as I fell more in love with them all over each passing page. It was Artemis Darth Vader, though, who became one of my new favorite characters thanks to her lovely oddball charm.

All in all, with realistic dialogue, giggle-worthy humor, and a sweet and slightly spicy LGBTQ+ love story, I was utterly lost in the words. And while there were moments that made the book feel like a somewhat slow burn, they only emphasized the heart-pounding clashes between good and evil and right and wrong. What this author did best, though, was bring to life relationships—and humans—in all of their glory. Insightful, touching, and yet filled with well-written palpable tension, this book was everything I look for in a novel. A mix of fantasy, thriller, and contemporary sci-fi, there was something in there for everyone including this lover of all things murder, mayhem, and suspense. Rating of 4.5 stars.

SYNOPSIS:

4 Stars!

I’m pretty confident that if you’re a Klune fan, no review is necessary to make you read one of his stories, and if you haven’t read Klune yet, what are you waiting for??

Despite a more subdued tone, this was quite some ride! While it had a lot of fun to it at times, there’s plenty of tension and dangerous situations that also kept me on edge with the actiony bits and the dramatic twists and turns, as three people with nothing in common find in each other the family and love they were either missing or had lost.

Klune delivers on a contemporary sci-fi romance (slow burn, mildly explicit) with lots of suspense, comedy, gravitas, and most important of all, heart! Read.

"Are we going on an adventure?"

Sci-fi and speculative fiction were my first loves. When I was growing up, these stories helped me escape life and took me on journeys through endless possibilities. To this day, when I read a well written sci-fi novel, I am transported into the story and I relish every moment. In fact, TJ Klune could not have written a story more suited to my tastes if he had climbed inside my head before sitting down to write. This is my jam.

Like so many of TJ Klune's stories, The Bones Beneath My Skin is about family. It's about loss and grief and love. And it's about bonds and trust and adventure. But this story is also very different. And wonderful. And I've got the book hangover for the ages. So saddle up, hoss, an adventure awaits!

Nate Cartwright is lost. He's numb with it. Everything he's built, everything he's become, has crashed, leaving him adrift. After inheriting the family cabin in middle of nowhere Oregon, Nate decides to go there to figure out what comes next. He did not expect what he found. A man named Alex and a strange little girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader.

Alex is lost, too, and has been for a very long time. His only purpose left is Art. Keeping her safe. You see, Alex knows grief and he knows loss, but he also knows what family is and that is Art. Trusting the stranger that shows up at the cabin is not on his agenda. But Art sees something more. Something maybe they all need.

Artemis Darth Vader is the awesomest of awesome 10 year old girls. She is both as you would expect, and completely different. She likes to read, to try new things, to go on adventures. She has a way of getting under your skin that you don't even see coming. She is a delight. She might like bacon a little bit, too.

What happens next, though, was something wonderful and terrible and while I figured some things out, other things were a total surprise. I loved having the story unfold through the eyes of Nathaniel Cartwright.

The writing? So fucking amazing. Engrossing. The romance? Some may find that disappointing, since it's rather muted. The characters? Entertaining and solid. For myself, I enjoyed every moment I spent within the pages of this story. Every. Single. Moment.

Life, as you know it, is about to change.

Your adventure awaits.

"Somehow, we're all made of dust and stars."

Ähnliches Foto

No, this book was not what I expected.
It was so much more...

And no, you won't get details from me since TJ Klune's books are always like a surprise bag and should be experienced as such. Simply put, this is a story about quite a smartass little girl named Artemis Darth Vader and two men, named Alex and Nate, trying everything in their power to get this girl home safe. One voluntarily, the other one voluntarily of necessity.

That does not sound pretty special, right? How special this story is, enfolds gradually, though. How special this girl is, enfolds gradually. How complex and flawed Nate and Alex are, enfolds gradually, when they find themselves on the run, on a roadtrip more resembling an odyssey and parts of their past are revealed. You won't understand, not at first anyway. That's what TJ says in the preface to this book and he's right. I didn't, but I wanted to and slowly but surely I understood the message behind this book. Well, at least I hope I partly did.

Because this story is also a mirror TJ holds up to us, to show us our own inability to look beyond our horizon - quite literally. To show us the arrogance we developed over time. Our lack of critical questioning. Our reaction to the fear of the unknown and our control addiction for the "benefit of mankind". How lonely we became right in the center of our society, so much so that there are people out there 'starving' for affection and about to loose hope. But this book also shows - albeit in a bit convoluted and fictional way - that it doesn't take much to change that...

Right from the beginning, I got completely invested in the characters. All of them. It's a rather unconventional romance and even if it is not in the main focus of the story, I felt the bond between Nate, Alex and also little Artemis (umm, no, it's not a threesome!) growing stronger with every page. And of course TJ put me once again through the whole spectrum of emotions. Towards the end I was mostly a sobbing mess which made it hard to read sometimes, but there were also quite a few happy tears.

I'll leave it at that, because everything else I could write wouldn't do justice to this book anyway, but it deserved at least something resembling a review and of course all the stars.

***Karen and Josy, thank you for reading this with me! You once again made a special book even more special to me! ***

4.5 stars

I was a little nervous when I started this book because I can’t remember the last time I read Sci-Fi. Did I struggle with some parts? Yes I did, but because of T. J. Klune’s beautiful writing and ability to tell a heartwarming story of pure love, I absolfreakinglutely enjoyed this one.

There isn’t a lot of romance in this one. It’s more about two broken men, Nate and Alex, who come together to help a young girl, Artemis Darth Vader. The girl is special and right from the beginning, you fall in love with her. She is an old soul that talks like she is in an old western romance, and she can see right into Nate and Alex’s heart.

The first half of the book was a little slow, but my heart was racing in the second half. I laughed, I cried and I freaked out a few times, but all in all, it is a solid 4.5 star read for me, and I am so glad I read this one, Sci-fi and all.

But fear can be a funny thing. You can fear what you don’t understand, but in the end, you can still be brave. You can still stand up for what’s right.

TJ Klune is a brilliant writer and this book is just ONE of the reasons why. His books are pure magic. Like, my mind is constantly being blown away and The Bones Beneath My Skin was no different. I. Loved. This. So. Much. It's a story about Nate, Alex and a very special girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader.

Now there is a reason why this review is vague and I highly recommend going in blind. You will go in thinking one thing and come out with a completely different story. The writing is phenomenal as always, the characters & setting are on point, and it's a little less focused on the romance but that was okay just because the story just owned me from page one till the last word.

Be prepared to have your mind blown and for the biggest hangover.

Nate grabbed a dropped metal baton.
“You know how to use that?” Alex asked.
“It’s a stick,” Nate said. “You hit people with it.”

She’s special.

What a weird little story, and what a beautiful one. This book is about three lonely people who find each other and form a bond and a family in the end. It’s difficult to pinpoint a genre. It’s sci-fi but feels more like a mystery, but not a thrilling one. Nothing really happens, and at the same time, a lot happens. Nate is constantly wondering what on earth is occurring, and as a reader, you’re wondering, too.

”It’s why I chose the both of you. You made me a home out of nothing.”

It took me some time to get to know Art, Alex, and Nate, but the more they revealed, the more I got invested in their story. This is not a standard T.J. Klune book; it’s a less humorous one, but I loved the take on grief. And I loved Art, that ten-year-old who read romances and asked so many questions. Alex and Nate were so protective of her.

I didn’t get it. Not before, Art had told him. I don’t think any of us did. Not until they felt a heart beating in a chest like I have. Not until I felt the bones beneath my skin. We’re not alike. Not really. We’re separated by time and space. And yet, somehow, we’re all made of dust and stars.

I love T.J. Klune’s writing and the epilogue, and look at that new cover! It fits the other books so beautifully!

Thank you, Erin from McMillan International, for this wonderful ARC!

I'm a huge Klune fan. I adore most everything he writes. And if I rated this book on his writing alone, it would get 5 stars.

But I don't.

I rate based on my overall reading experience.

What do I like to read most? Romance.

You wanna know what this book isn't? Romance

So although the story is well written, I would've liked to have known that I was reading the wrong genre.

I'll still read the hell outta his stuff in the future. I would appreciate some better tagging though.

A Galaxy of Stars and Wonder!

Relisten FEB 2025 ❤️❤️❤️

Original review OCT 2018:

I'm blown away right now. I'm not sure what to write since I'm still trying to process this story of love and stardust and bacon.

It's no secret that I'm a HUGE TJ Klune fan. It's no surprise that I'm rating this five stars. But when a book leaves you feeling overwhelmed by the power of love (yes, cheesy, I know), of possibilities, of transformation--when it does that and leaves tears running down your cheeks--a book like that has earned five friggin stars.

I went into this reading completely blind. No blurb. No other reviews. I preordered it. It showed up on my Kindle. I read it. I immersed myself is more apt, though.

So, this book is about a man who has lost everything. It's about another man who has o my one thing left to lose. It's about a girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader. It's about how together they all find the meaning of love and family.

No, this is no kinky three some. Yes, there is a romance between our male MCs--one that's long to burn, with an HEA or HFN at the end of the novel. No, this book isn't explicit sexually--it's something this book didn't need. You get one scene. It's a good one. Be happy.

This is a book about being on the run. About government secrets. About fear. About control and lack of control. It's about the dichotomy of love and hate that defines humanity. And what human beings and others will do to preserve the better parts of humanity.

Yes, I'm rambling and not making much sense. So what. I fell in love with Artemis Darth Vader, and Alex, and even Nate (who wasn't the best guy near the beginning of the book).

So. All the stars in the night sky for this book and like the humans who find that they are not alone in Klune’s book, I hope I'm not alone in my praise of it.

This was interesting. Klune is really good at interesting. Ultimately, it's a story about human connection, the pitfalls and glories of being human, and chosen family.

As usual, Klune ends with hopefulness. In many ways, it's typical Klune work. However, it was the first of his books I've read that are definitely for adults (at least I consider the sexual content too mature for young adults, though I'm sure they are more experienced at that than I ever was at that age). The rest of the book is certainly appropriate for young adults and older.

It was also a bit atypical in the subject matter. However, like some of his other books, it's the little people vs the government, very David and Goliath. It's authenticity and freedom vs control and secrecy. It's child protection vs child exploitation.

Artemis is a great character. I wish she were real, though some of the action and adventure got a little lost for me (or rather, I got a little lost in it). I could visualize it, but that's not what made the book exciting for me. I could've done without large parts of the book. If I'd been Klune's editor, I might've wanted entire passages removed.

Nonetheless, I felt like I could see Klune's heart and felt very connected to him through Artemis. (She really is a wonder!). So four sold stars for this book it is.

I never know how I feel about Klune and his books. They're pleasant, sweet, warming things. But they're also safe and paint-by-numbers affairs. They take no risk, their influences are plainly obvious, and yet they are reliably comforting and lovely things. The Bones Beneath My Skin is no different from the rest in that regard.

While it's labelled a thriller, it's very much a thriller by Klune standards. It follows the beats of a thriller but in a cute and cartoonish way.

It's also a novel that presents plenty of mysteries and encourages the reader to ask questions. However, every single assumption you make, from the moment the book opens, will be completely right. There are no real surprises here. If you guess it, you're going to be right.

The Bones Beneath My Skin is a perfectly charming and lovely story of found family and perseverance, of being open to new experiences and taking risks. It's a comfort blanket and well-paced page turner. But, like Klune's other works, it won't change the shape of the universe.

Not being a huge fan of the government in general, I never expected to side with the Black Hawks trying to hunt down a little kid and yet here we are.

There's no little girl. She doesn't have a father.

I've never seen an episode of Stranger Things.

What I know:

This is an unsettling book, part sci-fi, part escapade, part ... something. But NOT a romance. I don't care about the sex, but I do care about the relationship. And here Nate and Alex were bonded to Art, but only vaguely to each other.

Art annoyed me. It was like the "wise beyond their years" child times one thousand. The talking like a cowboy, the bacon, the waitress obsession ... marginally cute but repetitive. (Incidentally, I'm not vegan, but my daughter is, and vegan cooking can be flavorful and delicious. I'm not sure why the author chose to mock it.)

This book is pointless, unless you dig, and you have to dig deep. It's scene after scene after scene of dialogue, action, quips, but the connections are tenuous.

There's a cabin, a conspiracy, a cult, flashbacks, foreshadowing, and an utterly unsatisfying ending. What did that even mean? I don't know. You don't know either.

The story begins in 1995. Why though? No technology, I guess. Except Nate had a mobile phone. Um ... only 2% of the U.S. population had a cell phone in 1995. Cell phones were imaginary. They cost the equivalent of two to three grand today. So NO, a poor journalist didn't have a cell phone. But, ya know, Nate needed to call people, so he had one.

Maybe this book is about what it means to be human, what it means to love. Maybe not. It's nearly 7,000 locations of meandering thoughts and ideas and profound statements. SO long. TOO long.

I didn't love it. I didn't hate it either

There were moments.

I've no idea how to rate this book, so I'll go with my default neutral.

I will read anything TJ writes. He is a master at the written word.

This is great. I do prefer more romance, though.

If you’re a horror lover like me, you know how hard it can be to switch gears to something entirely different. Whether it’s stepping away from the blood, guts, and unsettling atmospheres of slashers to watch a lighthearted rom-com or diving into a sci-fi flick filled with futuristic tech, the shift can feel jarring. The same goes for reading. Sometimes it’s tough to leave behind eerie settings, distorted realities, and spine-tingling tension for a genre that doesn’t thrive entirely on fear. But every once in a while, even the most die-hard horror fan needs a break from the delicious weirdness and spookiness that defines the genre we love. A little reset button, if you will. Something to clear the brain, recharge the synapses, and make returning to horror feel even more exciting and rewarding.

This time, my recharge came in the form of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧 by TJ Klune, a book that manages to have a little bit of everything: supernatural forces, thrills, chills, and a cast of unforgettable characters who embody what it means to be human, even when one of them is anything but. This is one of those rare gems you wish you could read again for the first time, not just because it’s good (and trust me, it’s 𝙤𝙝 𝙨𝙤 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙), but because it leaves a mark on your soul in a way few books can.

TJ Klune has always captivated me with his writing. His books are effortlessly readable, filled with characters who slowly but surely become part of your heart. And the way he writes about love, in all its forms, is nothing short of magical. It’s like Baskin Robbins’ 31 flavors of ice cream, but better, because every flavor is rich, complex, and unforgettable. From 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐚 to the 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐤 series, I have yet to find a TJ Klune book I didn’t adore. Each one has stuck with me long after the last page, and every reread reveals new layers and hidden details I missed the first time around.

There are lessons tucked into every page of Klune’s stories, like lessons about finding your forever family even when they’re not bound by blood, about embracing grief and finding hope in the darkest moments, and about loving yourself unapologetically. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧 is no exception. In fact, this book taught me so much about the human condition through the eyes of a little girl who is anything but human.

“𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥. 𝘈𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘐’𝘮 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘳, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘰. 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘐 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘖𝘧 𝘢 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯. 𝘖𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘦𝘯. 𝘖𝘧 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯, 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘴. 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦. 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘶𝘴.” This paragraph captures the essence of this book beautifully.

Set in the spring of 1995, the story follows Nate Cartwright, a man who has lost everything: his parents have died, his estranged brother wants nothing to do with him, and he’s just been fired from his journalism job in Washington, D.C. With no direction and nothing left to lose, Nate retreats to his family’s summer cabin in Roseland, Oregon, hoping to find some clarity. But instead of solitude, he finds Alex, a mysterious man, and Artemis Darth Vader, an extraordinary 10-year-old girl who is far more than she seems.

As Nate becomes entangled in their lives, he faces a choice: allow himself to drown in the ghosts of his past or fight for a future he never thought possible. Because Artemis is special (remarkably so), and there are forces closing in that will stop at nothing to control her.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧 hit me hard, so hard that I found myself ugly crying more times than I could count. It’s the kind of story that doesn’t just tug at your heartstrings; it yanks them, twists them, and ties them into knots before offering the gentlest, most bittersweet release. I felt everything while reading this: the deep ache of loneliness, the warmth of unexpected connection, the pulse of fear, and the sheer, unrelenting power of love in all its forms. Nate, Alex, and Art aren’t just characters; they feel like living, breathing souls who burrow their way into your heart and refuse to let go. Their journey is filled with so much tenderness and pain, so much hope and devastation, that by the time I turned the last page, I felt like I had lived a whole lifetime alongside them.

If you need a break from horror but still crave something with emotional depth, suspense, and a touch of the supernatural, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧 is the book to pick up. It’s a story that lingers, one that leaves fingerprints on your soul. And trust me, you won’t regret a single second of it, even when you’re wiping away tears and clutching the book to your chest, wishing you could experience it for the first time all over again. 🥓

This book was everything I hoped it would be and so, so much more.

No, I didn't know what to expect. Beyond the blurb, I didn't look for further details about the story before I started reading it and I strongly recommend you do the same. I think going in blind and letting the story unfold as it is told without any previous knowledge about what's going to happen is the way to read this book.

So no, I won't tell you much about what is going on in this book but I'm going to tell you a little bit about how it made me feel even though I know that I won't be able to put all my thoughts and feelings into words.

It's TJ Klune and he has this incredible talent to bring out all the emotions in me - anger, hurt, relief, sadness, delight, and everything in between. And this book was no different. There has been more than one moment where tears were mixed with smiles and heartache was mixed with joy. Be prepared for a perfect balance between Wookie Cry Face and snorting laughter.

The main characters in this book - Artemis, Alex, and Nate - are simply amazing!

Little Artemis is such a delight! Reading about her enthusiasm and wide-eyed curiosity as she discovers the world around her, her innocence, compassion, and pureness as well as her straightforwardness and no-nonsense attitude - everything that makes her this very perfect, special child - was such a pleasure and I can't thank TJ enough for giving us such a fantastic, precious character.

She's also the one who brings Alex and Nate, two men shaped by their pasts and by the choices they've made, together and helps them to discover there is hope in life after all. Just by being who she is, she helps them to learn how to live with a deep grief that never vanishes completely; helps them to recognize the happiness even the smallest, seemingly insignificant, things can bring you; helps them to see beauty and love in the world around them. Helps them to realize that they can be more, so much more, if they only allow themselves to open their hearts. She's compelling and she not only got under Alex's and Nate's skin but under mine as well.

Still, by the end, this book left me a bit unsettled and it took me a while to figure out why. See, this book is not only sunshine, a calm lake, and a field of flowers. This book also shows us what humankind is made of. And it ain't always pretty.

We are selfless, loving creatures who want to be happy and make others happy but we also have a dark side. And this book shows us exactly how dark it can be: how destructive we can be - towards our kind and our world; how arrogant we can be; how we think ourselves better than the people around us; how we think we know it all; how we think we can control everything and everyone around us. It shows us how violent we can be when we feel threatened by things we cannot understand but that we are also not willing to learn about. How we can turn on each other instead of holding out our hand.

And having this dark side of mankind shown to me by this wonderful little girl made me feel ashamed and small. Because I recognized myself in some of the things she pointed out and I know there have been times where I could have done better.

I know I will never be as perfect as little Artemis but after having accompanied her on this adventure - one I know I will think of for a long time to come - I vow to do better.

I believe we all can do better.
And maybe we will one day have a little Artemis at our side who can help us be better.

And because my buddy read partner Karen said it so much better than I ever could, here is her review and you should go read it!

There are major similarities of events to ET and a race to witch mountain, perhaps that is the main reason for not enjoying this book? Too many similarities; this one lacked originality and imagination compared to his other works of fiction.

At the start of the book I was completely engrossed. The emphasis on DETAIL brought everything alive and I found myself immediately liking each character upon contact but I later realized that they lacked material. I think the author got carried away with the idea of this story and there was too much of the same pacing in the first half of the book in the last half of the book. Midway thru was when I actually lost interest.

I got to know Alex thru his many ways of getting his communication across thru grunts, Nate from his multidimensional character, and Artemis’ voice as a component of transparency. I didn’t mind that the conversations were all carried out in hushed dialogues because the exaggeration breathed a nice atmosphere of suspense. However, the effort that was exerted to paint characters of substance was introduced too far gone in the book after little happened to convince the reader of an exciting plot development.

The series of predictable events just ruined the pleasure of the reading process. Beyond midpoint of this book, I had either read/ watched/ heard the same tale. If the author had somehow come up with an interesting way to plot out the events at the cabin I guess I could’ve find it entertaining? It was the long and uneventful race to a predictable end that really disappointed me. Idk what would’ve happened if they had somehow tried to wait out Artemis’ departure at the cabin, the impact/ influence she unintentionally could've had on the town’s ppl. I mean the encounter with Peter was creepy, but how much more exciting the story would’ve been if Peter had found his way to Artemis instead of the other way around? To imagine humans being pulled to her because of an unknown alien power she has access to. I mean there were so many directions the author could’ve carried this story, at one point I tried attaching my own deeper meanings to substantiate for the average series of events, but it grew exhausting and I relented to having read a rather basic story.

TJ Klune is a master at pulling off high stakes, yet cozy storylines.

Don’t read the summary. Don’t read other reviews if they give you a summary, just know that this is, at its basics, about a quirky young girl, a man who would protect her with his life, and a man who is looking for quiet after a personal tragedy who finds them living in his cabin.

Still reading?
Okay, so Artemis Darth Vader and Alex seem odd. First of all, Art is curious about everything. She asks about everything. She has weird mannerisms. Alex is cold and his answer to everything is to point a gun in your face.

There is more to the plot, but I don’t want to give anything else away. Especially as it takes a good chunk of the book to get to the meat of it.

This still had humour, but less so than Klune’s other books. This was more action-packed and almost like a movie playing out.

I loved Art. Klune is great at writing hopeful characters who see the best in the world despite their circumstances.
Also, she loves bacon. An unhealthy amount.

"I don't... know?"
"Oh. That's okay. You know how to make toast. That's good enough for me."
Nate didn't think he'd ever received such simple validation in his life.
The toast popped up.

Big red flag for me: a random very intense sec scene. The romance was introduced in the last 100 pages and this sex scene felt so forced in and out of tone for the rest of this book.
I would recommend it to a wide range of readers had it not been for this. I don’t want my gran on my friend’s younger sister reading something quite as graphic as that in a book otherwise so sweet and lighthearted.

The ending was good but didn’t fully satisfy me, but I won’t go into details here!!!
First half was definitely four stars.🌟

The Bones Beneath my Skin is a standalone, cozy sci-fi, and it's a great way to check out Klune's writing and see if it appeals to you before trying a whole series.

I call it a sci-fi, but it's got a bit of fantasy, a bit of thriller, a bit of romance. There's a lot going on in this adorable little book. Gun battles, explosions, fleeing from evil government agents. And aliens, don't forget aliens.

It's set in 1995. Nate Cartwright has lost his job, his parents, and his relationship with his brother. He heads to the family's isolated rural cabin, expecting to have time alone to figure things out, but when he gets there it's not empty. He finds a 10 year old girl, Artemis Darth Vader, and her father Alex. And then shit gets weird.

It's silly, it's incredibly sweet and poignant, it's slow burn romance, and best of all it's never dull. If you've tried Klune's other books (House in the Cerulean Sea, Wolfsong, etc) and didn't like the writing style, then this isn't going to be for you. It's got all the hallmarks of his other books. But if you did like those, or like cozy fic, found families and queer romance, then this is a good one to pick up, especially if you're looking for a standalone, fast read.

tj klune + found family = therapy bills and crying on the bedroom floor

“you are animals. fierce and wild. you are harsh and brutal and beautiful. there is no one like you in all the universe.”

nate cartwright is lost. his parents recently dead, fired from his job, estranged from his brother. he inherits the family cabin in oregon and decides to go there to figure out what comes next. the cabin should be empty—it’s not. a man named alex and a strange little girl who calls herself artemis darth vader is there. alex is lost too and his sole purpose is keeping art safe. but art sees something more, something they may all need. nate is left with a choice: drown in the memories of his past, or fight for a future he never thought possible.

what is it about the way tj klune writes found family that leaves me a snivelling mess??

nate and alex are two intensely lonely men. both running and grieving in the wake of profound loss. both who think it might be easier to stay lost because it’s hard to take things on faith when it feels like there’s none left.

and then: being found.

but before that we need to talk about little artemis darth vader. it’s hard to explain without giving it away, but this book looks at humanity from a different lens. how awful and flawed humanity is. but also, so fierce and wild. how fragile we are but how we take chances, how hard we fight to have a future full of hope.

together they make a home out of nothingness. they create a home for together after almost losing themselves. out of a place where they should not exist. they take turns carrying each other until their knees give out. together they search for home in a harsh and unforgiving world.

it’s hard to explain how this feels until you read their story with your own eyes, but when you do there will be so much love and trust and heartache and humanity that sometimes it will feel like you’re drowning it in. i felt so alive reading this book.

i loved nate, alex, and artemis so much that it hurt to let them go. but i know i'll be back to see them again sometime in the near future.

but in the meantime i will just think about how

we’re all just made of dust and stars.

I am a mess. That ending when they are saying goodbye. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

We are not alone. 😉

January ebook review
A comet is coming close to earth - everyone is talking about it.

description

There are claims of an alien space ship flying in it's tail. How ridiculous. Do you know what they're made up of? I mean, the very idea is ludicrous. And even if it wasn't, it wouldn't help space travel. If anything, it would hinder it.

But Nate Cartwright isn't thinking about the comet. Nope, he has much bigger things on his mind. Like how his life became all fucked up what seems like overnight. Have one affair with a married senator and BAM, journalist career, over.

And his family, who deserted him when they found out he was gay, is shattered. All Nate wants to do is go to the cabin his parents bought years ago and spent summers there having fun and being a family. What Nate doesn't expect is for his life to change forever in ways he could never have imagined. It all begins on a clear and starry night...

description

When Nate meets a little girl in a Care Bears t-shirt,

description

And the man who is her guardian. The story is told from Nate's POV and what an experience that is as Nate meets Artemis Darth Vader...and Alex Weir. Two people who will never allow you to look at the world - the universe - the same way again. We...are not...alone.

description

And the secret government facility known as The Mountain, will do whatever they can to get Artemis back. She's been held prisoner for 30 years, but was she really? Because Artemis has powers. The Mountain people learn too late what happens when you piss off an alien inhabiting a little girls body.

"You really should let us go."
"I can't do that."
Art nodded. "So be it."
...gunfire cracking over the farmyard...
Nate felt no pain. He opened his eyes. Surrounding them were hundreds of bullets, floating in midair.
Arts eyes were wide and angry. There was a moment, a brief, terrible moment when Nate felt that anger, felt what she wanted to do. She wanted nothing more than to send those bullets right back where they’d come from, send them into the heads and hearts of the men who thought they could take from her.
She knew love. She knew rage. She knew violence. And she wanted revenge.
And then Artemis Darth Vader was moving.

"Not until I felt the bones beneath my skin,"... "felt a heart beating in [my] chest,"..."it's almost impossible to understand,"..."we're not alike. Not really. We're separated by time and space. And yet, somehow, we're all made of dust and stars."

"I know now...what it means to be human...it means having your heart broken. There is nothing more human than a broken heart."

"Also, you have bacon, which to be honest, I might recommend a total planet takeover just to have that. Like, complete human annihilation."

4.75 stars (what ever happens to the people from The Mountain? Surely they didn't give up trying to get Artemis back. If someone can show me where that's explained in the story I will bump this up to 5 stars.) :)
