Thirteen Realms #1

Changeling Exile

Rate this book
I’d do anything to go home to Autumn, the fae Realm where I grew up. I might only be a changeling, but it’s where I belong. That’s why I’m doing everything the Lord of Autumn commands.

My latest job: enforcing fae laws in the human world. It’s hard enough, but it gets worse when I meet my new partner. The Hawk is a fae knight, hot as hell—and an unrelenting jerk when it comes to changelings like me.

Somehow, I have to impress this guy to get back to the Realms. Kind of hard to do when we end up running for our lives. I said I’d give anything for the chance to go home—but I didn’t think that would include my life.

I enjoyed this light hearted romp through fairyland, despite the fact that there were no dragons. The last series I read by Marina Finlayson had some magnificent dragons which, if I remember rightly, had a battle in the sky over Sydney Harbour Bridge. What a sight that would be.

Anyway to get back to the current series, Allegra is a human who was raised in the Fae land of Autumn and there is nothing she wants more than to be allowed to live there again. So when she gets permission to travel there and offer her assistance to the current Lord she cannot do it fast enough. Of course she then gets involved in several near death experiences, falls in love with an entirely unsuitable male, and luckily has many talented friends who help bail her out.

Great story, charming characters and lots of fun. I enjoyed it all enormously and there are two more books to look forward to!

This fun fantasy set in Sydney (and the realms of the fae) was an entertaining, fast paced read with engaging characters, both human and fae.

Allegra is a changeling, stolen by the fae as a child and brought up in the fae world but exiled back to her real home when she turned 18 (a rule imposed by the fae King). A few years later she has learnt to assimilate into the human world and has made friends with other changelings and fae who chose to live amongst humans. However, she would do anything to get back to the fae world she loves, so when she is summoned to carry out a task for her fae lord, she jumps at the chance. She is asked to liase with a fae Knight, called the Hawk, to find a precious stolen item that has been taken to the human world. At first she finds the dark and brooding Hawk arrogant and unfriendly but finds a growing attraction to him as they find they are involved in a more deadly quest than they expected.

There are lots of unanswered questions that I hope will be followed up in the next books in the trilogy. . I'm looking forward to learning more about Allegra and Hawk and the realms of the fae in what promises to be an entertaining series.

My nits
Too NA for me, I am not fond of the '20 something woman who sees a guy and gets tingly and wet' trope.
No reasons behind the starting plot point, why involve her?
If someone considers you a second class citizen and at 18 literally dumps you in the trash with no help, money or way to survive, I wouldn't be a happy camper. Nor would I jump in happily to help every time I was called upon. Either the Realms are kind of a deadly drug, and therefore you are an addict, or I can't see where the rage is gone. You slithers on your knees for a impossible and never quite promised chance?
Plus given the plot it's way too light-hearted in delivering.

3.5. This was actually a good read, a tiny bit of magic, a little political intrigue, some interesting allies, a bit of mystery. I felt the world building was fine, with backstory thrown throughout.

Our FMC Allegra is a changeling a human raised in Fairy and dumped back on earth at age 18. There really wasn’t an explanation of why changelings happened in the first place, only that they have a sort of community in the human realm and there weren’t very many of them. Also that they themselves are divided 1/2 of them angry and jealous at the fae for kicking them out, and half of them are constantly yearning to go back to what they feel is their home. Allegra yearns to return to her home and picks up a job from a fae lord hoping to gain favor and the chance to return. The job is to help find a dress that was stolen from the queen. This dress being no ordinary dress but made of dragon skin. She teams up with the Hawk a knight of the realm who has for the past 20 years been searching for the Fae King who has long been determined dead.

I like Allegra, she seems real. Not just your everyday bad A heroine, no real powers so to speak but someone with determination and grit, and her entourage is great.

So many discoveries are made throughout their journey and the plot constantly thickening twists thrown throughout. A couple reasons why I didn’t give it a 4 star rating were 1. What even makes Allegra qualified for this job in the first place? Why was she chose for this? Seemed pretty random? 2. Allegra’s detective work tho seems to get things done is really bad and awkward to say the least. How in the heck they pulled this off is beyond me really. 3. Why is Allegra important? The characters themselves are even confused by this. I’m not sure if she is more than she seems or if there is some crazy convenient randomness happening like a scapegoat type of thing. 4. The ravens? She’s been feeding them for over a year, so she has been watched for all this time? Why? And who is this Raven mysterious ally no one really seems interested in finding out this information. He says she has multiple enemies but that makes no sense they shouldn’t be her enemies more like the Hawks enemies, yet they seem to be targeting her? 5. What’s up with the dress anyway? Are we still looking for it? How did it really get stolen anyway? Some theories are thrown out but nothing is really solved there.

I’d definitely like to continue the series to see if she is maybe more than she seems or if this is just some really random convenience.

I am so sick of the trope of the heroine being backed in the corner, being forced on a quest with the male protagonist who is initially an asshole but redeems himself later.

This started out really promising and I got really excited when I realised it was set in Sydney and that's where I live. But add tired trope, poor world building, annoying character habits and such convenient things occurring for our heroine and I was deflated pretty fast

An excellent introduction to wonderful heroine

A well crafted urban fantasy with a heroine who is humane and easy to identify with. The Hawk manages to come across as a decently fleshed out character instead of a.set of pecs in tight jeans described over and over again. I wasn't hoping for much so it's a nice surprise to have gotten so caught up in the mystery, Allegra's great friendships with Sage and Willow as well as feeling every ounce of anxiety when they traveled into The Wilds. Really looking forward to the next book and seeing how these characters develop.

3.5 rounded up

This book started with such promise, but lost me about midway. Luckily it caught me again near the end and I able to finish, but it felt like a struggle. The plot and ultimate mystery of the novel felt confusing and a bit forced.

Pros:
- interesting world building
- Characters are unique

Cons:
- Choppy occasionally
- Plot became confusing

SPOILERS

spoiler alert
Set in Australia (and the fairy realm), this book centers on a channeling who, at 18 as per usual, had to leave the fae realm due to get mother not wanting to share powers (a typical thing of the fae; by law they have to share their powers of they wish to keep their stolen human children past 18). Allegra is making it in the human realm of Australia as a magician and a gas station attebdant. One night she is summoned back to the realm and given the task of finding a drake scale dress as the Lord's believe it was stolen by a changeling. She is paired with the hawk, a kings knight, who still believes, against everyone else, that the king is alive and this task is meant to keep him busy. He believes that the king is in a deep slumber and being kept hidden. During their quest Al realizes that everything is connected to the kings disappearance and eventually find and free him from a nursing home. as a gift, she is granted what she always wanted: to pass freely between the realms. But she realizes home is Australia after all is said and done. Thats the major story arc and the fun is really in the details. Details about the surroundings are more the forte of this author. I enjoyed the story but it didn't have a ton of depth; it excelled at things such as deceiving a floating island home.
There is no cussing. it's written w Australian slang. no sex scenes or romance though it is hinted that Al thinks the Hawk is stealing touches and he mentions wanting to see her in the end.
I did come away with questions that were not answered in this first installment and may never be (such as info about the queen, why the knights are named after animals, what the point of her having asthma is, why did they blow up her house before anything had gotten under way, etc) though it did not end with a cliffhanger.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

The backbone of this novel was actually good, there were just few things I was annoyed with throughout the novel.

I thought the way the main character was so pathetically whiny about wanting to go back to a realm and mother that literally abandoned her was irritating. I couldn't really connect with the character. She felt young and immature. It could just be, possibly, that because if I were put in this position I definitely wouldn't be bending over backwards to try and spend time in a place where literally no one wanted me.

The fact that the main character was literally willing to do anything to go back to Autumn though, as in give her life for this task she was assigned, was annoying. I was done with her whining about being discarded after the first few chapters.

I did like the Hawk though and I thought how he reacted around the main character at the beginning, and how he changes at the end, was done well. I thought it was enough time, and that they had been through enough, to change his first opinion of her.

The action was fast-paced and fun. I thought there was a lot going on, but the action didn't overpower the novel. The main character gets less whiny at the end, and then of course learns that home is where the heart is (and that she didn't have to be in Autumn to be home). I was glad she came to this conclusion, I just didn't feel like it was natural. It wasn't in keeping with her character and the way she had been acting through, literally, the entire rest of the novel.

That being said, besides those few things that annoyed me, I liked it enough to read the second.

An enjoyable read. I thought the world-building was well-done and it is an interesting spin to see it from the point of view of a changeling who has been rejected back into the human world and is trying to adapt to her home of origin but not of her heart. The fae world is nicely depicted with both beauty and danger but it probably impossible to convey the full enchantment the fae world is suppose to have which makes the human world seem very drab--like being forced to live in a world of grey when you are use to vibrant colors all the time.

That lack of full understanding the glory of the fae world by some readers may make it difficult for them to understand why Allegra is willing to do anything to go back there. It can also make her seem a bit whiny at times.

I love Allegra's relationship with her friends, both other changelings and some of the fae that have decided to live in the human world (sort of).

In spite of Allegra's wish to desperately have access to her home she will not allow herself to be treated as lesser by the fae, most of the time. She speaks up for herself, sometimes when it really is not a good idea. I like Hawk's evolution over time, though sometimes it did seem a bit abrupt.

Allegra and Hawk's investigative skills are poor to say the least. They really just stumbled on the answers and even then some things didn't get answered. There were a lot of questions unanswered as to Allegra and others involved with her. But then you need something to spur a series on.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

I liked the MC.
I liked the love interest.
I liked the other characters.
I liked the setting.
I liked the world building.

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Fantastic storyline!

I legit LOVED this book! The storyline was new and different, the characters are likable, and it was well-written with very few grammatical errors. I love anything about the fae, but honestly I’ve been very tired of the same crap over and over. Something about this book just feels new to me.

The world building was very good, the author gave enough information so that you have a general understanding of the world of fairy, but she left out enough to build on the mystery of what happened to the 13 realms.

Speaking of the 13 realms, I’m ready for more Raven. I know I’m supposed to be all caught up in the Hawk, but Raven is a little dark, a little protective, and a little jealous, and I’m not gonna lie, that’s a whole lotta smexy to me. Can’t wait to jump into the second installment!

This was nearly was a DNF for me, I started it, got to the bit when Allegra and the Hawk are asked to find missing clothing, and I thought that was a bit too odd, and went off and read quite a few other books, but then returned to this one, I was glad I perservered in the end as I did enjoy it.
Little details like Allegra seeing the suggestion of Hawk's wings were cool, and Yriell calling him fly boy was pretty funny.
There was one scene that felt like it had been stolen straight from the Lord of The Rings, so that detracted a bit.
There were also a couple of believe-abilty issues for me one being why someone would leave a distinticive knife in his victim's back, and the other was how one character escaped dementia level care, even briefly.
This did have a very slight YA vibe to it, but not enough to put me off, I am quite interested to read the follow up books.

I am not into fairies, elves, trolls or leprechauns for the most part, so this is not my usual reading material. However, the book was interesting, didn't go way out in left field and do some strange stuff, but was a well thought out crafted story. The author also introduced some characters early in the book that didn't play much of a part in this book but looked like she was just introducing them for a later book. I like that. The characters were well thought out, and some planning has been done on the plot and characters. This will make the remaining books more interesting. The only complaint was the use of sex in the book. It wasn't needed and would make it something I could recommend for my grandkids and great grandkids. They do read most of the books I recommend. Unfortunately, because of the sex, this is one I will not recommend, and also why I didn't rate it higher.

Good fantasy adventure

Alleges is a competent warrior, but it is a little weird when her elven patron assigns her to help a fae knight solve a mystery. I wished she was a little more competent with human technology, having been in the mortal realm for 4 years.

The action was good and the characters were sympathetic. There is attraction, but no real romance in this book. Alleges thinks the Hawk is handsome, but the chemistry between them isn't great. It looks like they might get together in a later book, but I could also see them becoming good friends instead.

This is a good stand alone fantasy. Even though it's part of a series, it doesn't end in a cliffhanger.

Great descriptive adventure

This book contains a complete story, no cliffhanger. It is well written. The heroine is strong, independent and at the same time emotionally vulnerable. There is not an over abundance of characters to track. The story unfolds around an investigation which turns out to be more complex. There is action and adventure. The friendship between Willow, Sage and Allegra is believable. I am looking forward to the next book and how this trilogy unfolds. This is the first book I have read by this author. I will finish this series and look to read another!

Good story, worth a read

I really enjoyed this story. It moved along nicely, wasn't entirely predictable, and made me want to continue with the second book. I did miss a clarification on Rowan, like he disappeared after the first concert and wasn't really mentioned again other then someone else casting suspicion on him. And what about her mother? That book starts off with a memory of her, but we know nothing of her, and if she wasn't amazing, why the need to go back? Maybe that will be tackled in the next books.

If you're looking for deep, philosophical literature, you're in the wrong place. But if you're up for a fast-paced, magical, sexy, gleefully fun piece of brain candy this is your jam. The characters are vivid, witty and likable. The story rollicks right along, packed with murders and mysterious pathways and dangerous spells - plus a few encounters with a pleasantly broody fae knight. I blasted through it and tore right into the rest of the series (which I can so far assure you is just as much fun).

A great new series

I absolutely loved this book. It was a fantastic UF that you will get so engrossed in, you won't want to put it down. Allegra is a great lead character that is tough and loyal but also longs to to be home in faerie. She gets teamed up with a knight of the fae realm to find some missing items but what they find is bigger than that! The ending was satisfactory but left with a lot of questions and what does the Hawk want with Allegra?

Very intriguing

Very enjoyable first installment. I really enjoyed getting to know Allegra and her crew as she investigated her new case for the Autumn Lord.
I really liked Hawk and seeing him and allegra work together, can you say chemistry. I can't wait to see what happens next. So much was discovered but there are questions as to why certain people did certain things and why her....da da duuuum! Bring on book two.

Oh My Fae Heart

Couldn't put it down, read this book within the day and now heading onto the second. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book being when I first started reading some fae based books they seemed way too snobbish and hard to like despite their described beauty. Sure they are still kinda snobbish in this but not to the point it put me off on the story.

I quite enjoyed this book and recommend it to other Urban Fiction readers.

ENJOYABLE, but took too long to get to everything

I really enjoyed this story. Granted I felt it went on too long and quite a few characters were introduced that just were in the peripheral and I couldn’t understand why they kept mentioning them and then nothing.
I just felt like quite a few of the chapters from the beginning could’ve been skipped right over.
Did anyone else wonder why Al’s house blew up? That was never addressed either.

Murder, mystery, and a missing King.

In this one our fl is a human changeling raised in the Fae courts until she was "too old" to be of interested and booted back to the human world. With no real guidance and little knowledge on how things work- Allegra has to start from scratch with the help of other changelings and a few friends.

Things are going...alright. She has a job, place to live, boyfriend, and a spot in her friend's band- but things take a seriously sharp turn when the King of Autumn calls her back to the realm to task her with finding a missing treasure.

With the help of the Fae warrior, Hawk, the two try to solve the crime only to get pulled into a deeper conspiracy than they might be able to handle. Can these two work together and ultimately get what they need before one of them winds up dead?

I was definitely sucked into this story and overall enjoyed it immensely. There was a little bit of repetition in how some things were described, but the story unfolded smoothly and with plenty of action and witty humor. I look forward to reading the rest of this series and seeing how everything unfolds.

Beautiful World

I truly enjoyed the world built in this book. It was easy to connect with Allegra, Willow and Sage, which pulled me into the story. There are several loose ends, that would most likely be addressed in the other books in the series, but overall, this book felt complete.

Absolutely Enchanting

I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns of this book. There was an epic quality the made me dream of kingdoms and wars and magic. The only problem I had though, was there was a bit of a YA quality about it. But this could be because Allegra is pretty young here. Hope we see her grow up a bit in the next books.
