Quinn doesn't have much to his name but a broken down old freighter, even keeping it fueled is a constant struggle on the edges of civilized space where jobs are scarce and honest ones non-existent.
With the death of the Emperor civilized space begins to dissolve into squabbling factions fighting for control and beautiful new passengers aboard Quinn's ship all bring their own load of problems and opportunities.
WARNING: This book has explicit sex, nudity, murder and a lot of crime. There is polyamory, a hot alien, a cheerful robot, a kick-ass lawyer, a xeno-archaeologist in a snazzy hat. It is a harem, and the male main character gets it on with all these girls. It is also space fantasy, there is a dollop of magic and hard science does not apply. You should probably take very little of it seriously.
4.5 stars for Narration New Narrator! David Benjamin Bliss did a pretty good job.
This was a fun & quick book to read. I feel like the author tried to make core details matter by developing background info or reasons for why certain events happened the way they do.
There's humor mixed in with adventures and loads of attitude by the quirky cast of Centauri Bliss. I would have liked a little more detail in the characters and why Quinn does what he does.
I'm still undecided on whether or not I liked the Firefly vibe. It's not a bad thing but I want a story to have it's own personality and it didn't really develop that til the end.
Awesome Space Opera, Great Cast of Characters Enough similarities with Firefly to bring back fond memories and make me excited to continue to read the series. None of the classic LitRPG choices, and very tame / PG rated adult relationships only.
The main character, captain and owner of the ship Quinn has flaws, but makes real progress and development through the course of the book, so the flaws don't become incessant or annoying. Tamara the technologically enhanced lawyer and amoral badass. Jinx the royal blood with real magical abilities. Kara the alien bad-ass with super strength and fast healing, and a lust for violence. Taki, loyal to a fault. Deal the female space-Indiana jones. And Melody, the illegal android cook, mechanic, and warm hearted companion. And all beautiful of course.
The worlds fill in with enough detail to keep the plot moving, but not to be overwhelming given that a space ship gets around to a lot of worlds through the course of the story.
The other crew members are unique, interesting, and introduced in a way that makes the whole gel as the story progresses.
There is a small issue of sloppy editing and dozens of ill-structured sentences, some which take a few seconds to figure out what was meant. Improper homonyms, etc. Doesn't bother me that much but some might find it annoying.
It was by no means a bad book; it was good all in all. So why 3.5? There were a few spelling/grammar mistakes, mainly towards the end. Big stickler on that because it pulls me out of the immersion when I have to figure out what word actually goes there. It was a fast story. Many people may like this, I like stories that don't drag, but this one, I felt, could've used characters that weren't so accepting. It was an interesting story with mostly interesting characters. It is not EroLit but it does have some adult content, which I liked. Not so much that I didn't have to use my imagination and just enough to send me in the right direction. If I weren't so interested in what a sequel had to offer if have given it three stars, but I would really like to read the sequel if it ever comes out.
A refreshing view into the harem genre, where the girls aren't throwing themselves at the guy and the guy has his own problems to deal with. Not as graphic as most other books in the genre but that's not this books strong suit, it's all about the story and the growing intrigue about a galactic empire on the verge of civil war and a brash but loveable smuggler trying to do right by his people. Kaylee Grant always crafts interesting storylines and I can't wait to see where this one goes.
I enjoyed the book, but it's way too much like Firefly especially in the beginning. Quinn = Mal, Taki = Zoey, Zara = Jayne, Tamara and Jinx, = Simon and Summer, Melody = Kaylee, and Mara = Inara. Obviously there are differences, but they fit personality traits pretty closely and their first couple missions fit exactly the plot of the first episode of the series. It could be intentional could not be, but it definitely weirded me out and was more than coincidental.
A no frills space opera that doesn't use silly things like detailed descriptions or character reflections. For example, after 6 people, after being together for a couple of days, all decide to get married. The reader doesn't really need to know why everyone would suddenly get married and start sleeping with each other, it happened, get over it, move on. Pretty much the entire story is like that, running from one situation to the next with everyone responding without much thought or insight. Yes, it is fun. But the reader is left thinking... "wait.... wha?"
In combat, in planning, in flying, in the bedroom, in his relationships, on his ship... he's a pushover in every way. It's not a harem, either. It's polyamory that happens to only have a single male. Also, the romance scenes are just explicit enough to be unsatisfying. He doesn't have to be a chest beating alpha wannabe, but he should at least have some standards.
I don't know what's up with me and this author. I always expect him to be so-so or a disappointment and he always either delivers a solid work or straight up blows me out of the water. This story had everything I like in a story. Action. Adventure. Solid well written characters and just a hint of sexiness without being nauseating. A truly excellent read.
Lots of action physical and sexual. The ship assembles a crew of people who cant exist, to good or too bad, but we like them anyway. Characters being black or white doesn't rob us of the fun of the chase. Doesn't really end, first if a series, but it terminates without leaving us feeling robbed. A good read.
Entertaining, fun, well paced. Think Firefly meets Star Wars, with a bit of random magic thrown in. Great read, really can't wait for further adventures of the Centauri Bliss.
A really good read. Reminiscent of Firefly tv series in some ways. Characters were interesting and the plot was fast paced. There were frequent sex scenes but they are not overly graphic.
Very interested to find out what happens in the sequel if there is one.
I was reluctant to read but was intrigued because I am a sucker for space operas. I think this was awesome. Characters are interesting and I love mysterious backstories. Please continue with this as a series.
Even though I enjoy a little more depth to how things work, this is a good story with a number of well developed characters. Hopefully there will be more with this story soon.
Lots of action, the characters were flawed but very real. The overarching theme of just looking for a family and a place to belong combined with the "freighter captain smuggler and crew" lifestyle takes me away to a "Galaxy Far, Far Away"!
While it starts a little slow it sets characters up we in their universe. I can hardly wait to explore more of this world and the interesting characters the author has created.
Quick, breezy, sci-fi. Interesting, if shallow, world building. Punchy dialogue and action, too punchy a lot of the time, everyone sounds like they are in a rush to the next scene so much so it can break suspension of disbelief.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The idea of an extended family and the randomness of the adventures was fantastic. I hope there are more books in this vein, definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year.
Great book with a relatable MC and a great group of females in his harem. Light on the adult content but a fantastic story which will hopefully lead to more books.
I wish I could point out exactly what was wrong with the book, the core story was good enough, but the characters are flat, the pacing feels rushed and transitions between scenes awkward. Not the worst book I’ve read this year, but certainly not the best.
A combination of magic and acceptance of change.Defiantly not a normal life and magic will be different from what you think. Fun reading, enjoyable experience.
