4.5 stars! This is so much more than a straightforward detective story. The plot is complex with lots of backstory, twists, and turns. Within the first few chapters, we have not one but three gruesome murders that appear to have no connection, and the action doesn't stop there. There are also multiple characters, and we get a glimpse into the underworld of the culprit alongside getting to know Detective Lorimar and his team. I, for one, love this style. It would make an excellent plot for a film.
The book is set mostly in Edinburgh, but the plot expands across the globe, and at first, it's hard to see how the author will manage to pull it altogether. But it makes sense and ties up in a satisfying way. The book is nicely paced, and the tension keeps on ramping up as the story unfolds.
One character that stood out for me was the medium Doirin. She was so entertaining and brought lots to the storyline. I also really enjoyed Lorimar's character. He has intuition and a good heart!
Overall, it was a really enjoyable read and so much more than expected. I'll definitely look out for more books by this author.
With thanks to Love Book Tours, Nights Border Press, and the author for providing a copy of the book. This is my honest review, which I'm leaving voluntarily.
There are mystery/detective thrillers that move straight and sure and true, and there is nothing wrong with that. But there are others more mysterious than thrilling, more psychological than active, and more nuanced than generic. One Night Only by G.P. Ritchie is a wonderful example of the second. This truly intriguing novel is categorical only because the plot involves a detective solving a mystery. Any presumption you have, however, about how that plot unfolds, should be immediately tossed out the predictive window. What is happening, after all, during that surrealistic scene beneath the streets of Edinburgh? What does an everyday Medium have to do with several unsolved murders? Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of this multi-layered tapestry is the subtlety with which Mr. Ritchie weaves his unusual but distinctly interlaced pattern. Nothing too straight and sure and true. Something much more pleasing – a story to make you think.
Detective Andy Lorimar makes for a tenacious, socially awkward, highly likable, protagonist in G.P. Ritchie’s One Night Only. The Scottish locale as revealed by its Scottish author allows for a delightfully foreign accent when applied to the basic style of a highly popular genre. This and the decidedly unique plot elements introduced by Ritchie create a wonderfully unsettled ambience as Detective Lorimar attempts his normal, straightforward approach to crime-solving, and soon the would-be hero is infected with abnormal self-doubt and uncertainty about his abilities and his conclusions. All of this, brilliantly understated, makes for a deeply human medium in which to explore an alternate world of venality, arrogance, and pathological violence. Well done!
Well, I instantly knew that I was going to love this book, just from that dark and mysterious front cover!
I have to admit to being slightly confused by the first few chapters - but this only added to my total intrigued of what this book might hold.
There were a lot of quirky and diverse characters dotted amongst the few relatively normal victims and police and I loved how each of these interacted and added to the whole atmosphere of the storyline.
I think Andy (out main detective) was brilliant. Such a great character to explore with his colourful upbringing and motivations for doing his job - and in the best jaded detective style, I loved the dynamics between him and his boss - but also him and the rest of the team. Their eagerness to get the case solved asap and Andy's determined efforts to delve deeper were just great!
The timelines jumped around a fair bit, but this only added to the unique writing style and unfolding of the storylines. The way things pulled together and started linking up worked so well and the strangeness of each thread was what held my interest throughout.
I loved Doirin and her input into everything. A skill that many profess to have and even more disbelieve - but this added another intriguing layer to everything and ultimately was the game changer in the whole book!
This book was everything I love! Intriguing and quirky characters, a great setting, an odd set of storylines weaving around one another and a good few murders thrown in too!
I'm shocked that this is a debut novel as it was so well written and totally up my street! I'm so excited to be able to dive straight into the second book by this author - Angel's Gate - a collection of short stories which will hopefully be just a great as this book was! Loved it!
This is a complex tale of murder which will draw you in and keep you guessing. Following detective Andy Lorimar, this book looks at a series of murders and missing people to try and find the killer. Tense, dark and slightly unhinged, this is the perfect read for spooky season!
Initially, it took me a few chapters to understand the links between what had happened, but once it clicked it was a fast paced read which was an absolute page turner. The characters are written well and there are just enough teasers in the in between chapters to see what is unfolding behind the scenes of the police investigation. It was well written and a strong plot which I really enjoyed!
I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review
This story was abit hard to get into to at first and I did have to keep restarting it but I think I just wasn't focusing on it and had to keep putting it down to deal with life. So I'd suggest for when anyone starts it have a few hours to concentrate on it. Coz only you get passed the first hurdle it is a great read!
The storyline is epic, proper whodunnit crime thriller.. but what made it super epic was the banter most of the characters have with other characters - it had me cracking up to the point where my other half was like "what?" And I'd have to explain what's happened and what's been said.
This is a thrilling and haunting mystery ride that unfolds to a surprising reveal. It's a dark murder investigation that draws on supernatural and psychic talents, lots of suspense, and some brilliant dark humour. Alongside the murder investigation there are snippets of tragic backstory, intricately woven subplots, and colourful and quirky characters. It's a layered crime thriller with a horror and paranormal vibe, and the last few chapters draw everything together into a shocking and memorable conclusion. Definitely an intriguing and different murder mystery where paying attention to the details is key.
One night only by G.P. Ritchie. I really did enjoy this book. I did like the cover and blurb of this book. I really did enjoy this book eventually. It did take a bit to get into. I got used to the writing style. I did like Andy straight away. I loved DS Petrakis. Especially the hospital scene. Doctor Nassar, I loved how she was with Andy. I did like the ending. I really hope there is more to come
“Right step 1, I don’t care who was drugged worse. You’re both going to the hospital. Step 2, I’ll arrange trauma counselling. Step 3. If I like it, I might even organise some for you guys.” One of many speeches that had me cracking up 🤣😅
I don’t think I’ve read a crime mystery quite like the one G P Ritchie has bought us with One Night Only. The perfect amount of mystery, suspense and dark humour! We join DI Andy Lorimer and his team as they try to solve a gruesome murder of a city councillor leading Andy to meeting a woman called Dorin who has a special gift of being able to communicate with the dead. I don’t want to give away too much so I’m gonna talk about how awesome the characters were instead. My fav by far was DS Elisia Petrakis the banter between her and Andy was brilliant and I really wouldn’t want to be taken down by her 😅 Andy was great aswell - it was so sad to read about what happened to his mum when he was little 😢 I even liked DC Burns and DS Devlin - proper pair of plonkers providing comic relief during such a dark investigation.
I enjoyed everything about this book a perfect spooky season read! Highly recommended 🤩

I mean just the prologue and first chapter are the best beginnings to a book that I have seen and just from those alone Ritchie absolutely captured my attention and sucked me deep into the storyline. Do not start this book until you have cleared your schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!
The characters were all realistic and strong and I was completely invested in them throughout. Ritchie does an absolutely amazing job of weaving the storyline through multiple protagonists giving the reader a bigger picture of what is going on at different times without giving anything away until he is well and truly ready to!! Ritchie's evocative descriptions really makes them jump out of the book and come to life in front of the readers eyes. I was completely invested in each and every one of the characters especially DI Andy Lorimar who I loved "being next to" and investigating the crimes with. I really enjoyed getting to know him and would love to see this book turned into a series so I get to meet him again. Hint, hint Ritchie ;) ! Each of the characters all played their own roles perfectly and they all had their own unique and individual personalities with their own flaws, strengths and weaknesses. Along with Andy I enjoyed meeting and getting to know his colleagues from his boss and friend DCI Brian Nesbitt, the brilliant and humorous pathologist Doctor Nassar, sarcastic and brilliant DS Elisia Petrakis and even irritating DS Jamie Devlin along with medium Doirin Chambers who I absolutely loved. The fact that this is Ritchie's debut novel yet he has managed to create these amazing, unique and strong characters is just absolutely amazing!!! All of the characters were multi layered with complex personalities which definitely made them all the more interesting to read about!!! Unfortunately, I really can not say anymore as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. Regardless of what I thought about who, each character worked perfectly to make this page turning psychological thriller!!! I just cannot wait to see what characters this amazing author comes up with next!!! Hint hint Ritchie 😉 !!! I genuinely loved getting to know all the characters and was completely invested throughout!! It just goes to show how fantastic Ritchie's writing skills are as he completely brought them all to life for me. An absolutely fantastic selection of unique characters that all worked together perfectly to create an absolutely chilling, gripping and addictive page turner!!!
This book is one of the BEST crime thrillers I have ever read !!! This book really is a truly unique page turner that I picked up this morning and had completely devoured it in a few hours!!! When the hell is this being made into a film and when are you bringing your next book out as I need my next hit!!!
Overall an absolutely unputdownable, action packed, intriguing crime thriller that will keep you up at night on the edge of your seat with a pounding heart!!
One Night Only by G.P. Ritchie features Detective Andy Lorimar as he attempts to solve the mystery of a dead city councilor in Edinburgh. His investigation brings him into contact with a quirky psychic and a cast of skilled officers determined to close the case in the wake of political pressure. Where they look for the most obvious path, Andy faces the challenge as a complex game, ferreting out clues to not only the councilor’s death but to an ages-old series of horrific crimes.
One Night Only is a dark tale of murder intertwined with Andy’s own coming of age story. Like a sophisticated French braid, G.P. Ritchie weaves the plots together a few strands at a time, smoothing away the reader’s doubts as they arise with an attractive blend of action, detail, and intrigue. He binds the plot off with an amazing reveal that is both satisfying and memorable.
While I love a good mystery, I think I preferred Andy’s personal story just as much, and the way it comes to light shows how much a creative talent Ritchie really is. I was awed at the amount of backstory and subplots he was able to incorporate while maintaining a comfortable pace. His decisive writing style and attention to detail made it easy to fall into the story without doubting the authenticity of police procedures. I also appreciate the light hand Ritchie used through most of the book to incorporate that supernatural element that elevates it another dimension. It felt real and helped maintain that dark edge that made One Night Only such an enjoyable read.
I’m still reeling from reading this book. It’s unlike anything else I’ve ever read. Yes it’s a crime thriller, but add in a deranged, mad scientist, and a medium who knows where the bodies are buried, and you have a match made in heaven. Or is it hell?
Our main protagonist is Edinburgh detective Andy Lorimar. Older and wiser than most of his colleagues, his past comes back to haunt him when he becomes part of an investigation into the horrific murder of a local councillor. And it seems that her past is also mysterious.
Cllr Joan Wood was run down in the street, dragged along and run back over. It can’t have been an accident. But what possible motive could someone have had for killing her? Then others are missing, including one of her colleagues – it must be connected.
In the meantime, Andy meets Doirin, a medium who hears the voices of the dead. But is she for real? Apart from a tipple of gin, she has nothing to help her, and her insight is too realistic to be imagined. Andy is sceptical, but also open to hearing what she has to say.
There’s also a horrific scene that takes place in an underground theatre, involving a man called ‘John’, who is enticed off the street to see a ‘show’. Throughout much of the book, this seems to have no bearing on anything else. But this story is far too clever to leave no stone unturned. It all comes together, but you do need to concentrate!
Apart from the intricately woven plot, I love the writing. It’s very unique in its style, with lots of puns and banter (though not in an un-PC way like many detective novels). The best occur between Andy and fellow police officer Petrakis, and also between Andy and the pathologist (they are always weird and wonderful). I would also say with Devlin, but it’s more one-sided as Devlin is a bit of an annoying idiot, but these characters give colour to the whole thing. And of course the wonderful Doirin, my favourite by a mile.
Many thanks to @lovebookstours for inviting me to be part of #OneNightOnly blog tour.
Here is my review for One Night Only by G P Ritchie
This story is a great puzzle for DI Andy Lorimar as well as a headache as it has leads that don’t seem to lead anywhere or leads that pan out. He’s not keen on who he is partnered with but tries to make the best of it. The case is full of twists and turns. I really enjoyed reading this book and the story grew on me the more I read. I really liked DI Andy Lorimar as a character, he was a big boned guy and tall with it. He loved puzzles as a child and lived in a foster home. He is very good at his job. The story is well written and set in Edinburgh. The author has either a knowledge of Edinburgh or researched it for this book. It was a really intriguing story and well plotted. I would like to read more books with DI Andy Lorimar in them.
Blurb :
As a boy, Andy Lorimar loved puzzles, but one he didn’t solve destroyed his childhood. It would have taken his future too, if he hadn’t found stability within the police service. Now a long-serving Edinburgh detective, he’s built a solitary existence following evidence to find the truth. After the horrific murder of a city councillor and the disappearance of a council employee, the trail of evidence points towards political corruption. But Andy suspects there may be another path to uncover, a shadow-maze stretching back years into darkness. A path that strays uncomfortably close to a woman who hears the voices of the dead.
“Right step 1, I don’t care who was drugged worse. You’re both going to the hospital. Step 2, I’ll arrange trauma counselling. Step 3, if I like it, I might even organise some for you guys.”
A twisted dark intricately written thriller that will leave you interested to know who our mystery murderer is, why these at first seemingly random murders are taking place, and will we find out what happened to Andy’s mum?!
The reason I gave this book a three is mainly due to the beginning of this story, where I found it a challenge to keep up with the multitude of characters, settings and plots that were being thrown out way. However, once I had settled further into the story, these all came together and it was easier to follow the story being told.
The last few chapters were so fast paced - I couldn’t stop turning the page! Everything finally comes together and we witness firsthand the intensely dark cover ups that have been taking place. What helped this darkness was the humorous undertones that were woven through the use of certain characters, providing comedic relief and breaking up the tension to give the reader a chance to collect their thoughts.
Suspense, mystery, murder and more await you within these pages!
This book had a lot of threads, both in the present day and the past, that all wove together to make an intriguing crime thriller that seemed impossible to solve. It's listed as being a horror, but for me the horror element was minimal, I'd describe it more as a thriller.
My favourite character was Doirin. I found her fascinating, I don't really believe in mediums, but she certainly seemed to have a gift! I also found Max, and everything he did really interesting, in a "I hope no one ever does that for real" way. I won't say more because... spoilers.
I like the way the book jumped around from the past to the present, with the little glimpses of the past helping us see the motivations of people in the present. Andy's difficult childhood led to him becoming a compassionate and thorough police detective.
All in all, this was an exciting crime thriller, and I'm looking forward to reading more of G.P. Ritchie's work next month. Watch this space!
By 6 degrees of separation (actually only 3 degrees) I know the author of this book. When I started it, I wanted to like it for that reason. I wanted to support a first time author even if it meant grading this book on a curve.
By 50 pages in, all that was forgotten. This isn’t an awesome book because of who the author is; it’s a flat out awesome book. G.P. Ritchie can write! He can write with descriptive flair and with snarky humor. And he tells a mysterious story that slowly unfolds to reveal all the shocking truth you hadn’t imagined from page one. And in Andy Lorimar, he creates a protagonist that is impossible not to root for. If this is the first in a series, I’m pre-ordering all the sequels.
I highly recommend this book. And not because I know someone who knows the author. It’s a great page-turner that will leave you guessing till the end.
One Night Only G. P. Ritchie August 25, 2018 Nights Border Press
G. P. Ritchie is an author not to miss. I used to find it difficult to ‘jump the pond’ as they say when reading. Authors like Ritchie immerse the reader into the book and paint such vivid pictures of characters and locations that Edinburg does not feel foreign. Ritchie tells us a mysterious story that unravels at the perfect pace to reveal the shocking truth that you will not see coming. You should know that there are several things that need to come together at the beginning of the book. It doesn’t take long, so pay attention, it will all be worth it. Detective Andy Lorimar is a protagonist that you must root for. Snarky humor, crime, a little horror and supernatural elements thrown in that makes this NOT your average crime fiction novel. Enjoy fellow readers!
The blurb of this book had me intrigued. I’m not normally one for horror and gore but it really caught my attention so I took a chance. The chance was definitely worth it. The level of horror and gore was not as much as I had anticipated but that said there is a definite element so bare that in mind. It took me a while to get in to the book. There are several plays running alongside each other and initially I found it difficult to keep track. As the story progressed the plots started to link and as the connections are made things all fell into place for me. I really enjoyed this book as I got more and more in to the plot I found it harder and harder to put down. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
We follow Andy as he battles to solve murder and political corruption in one of my favourite places - Edinburgh!
This isn't your standard crime novel though, oh no... we have lashings of horror and even a dash of supernatural in there, which, combined with the crime element, makes for quite an intriguing read.
The characters feel alive, and I love how they are all introduced to us and how they develop.
I did feel that it was maybe a slow/medium pace, which is different for the horror and even crime types I usually read, but G.P Ritchie covers a lot of ground!
If you love crime, horror, and the supernatural and fancy trying something different, then this one is for you!
One Night Only is a real page turner, is gripping from the get go. It's a crime thriller, mixed with the paranormal, with some creepy, and quite frankly, terrifying events.
It's a haunting mystery that unfolds before your very eyes, as we follow our main character Andy on quite a dark tale of murder and deceit.
So all in all, I enjoyed this read. It's dynamic, it's thought-provoking, it's clever, with lots of quirky, interesting characters throughout.
The writing is brilliantly descriptive, and the feel is atmospheric and at times, foreboding.
I read this in two sittings.
4 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.
It's a read that I'm sure will have you turning the pages long before you should have gone to sleep.
A crime thriller at heart with menacing, supernatural overtones, the combination of these elements in One Night Only works to great effect and should appeal to readers of a wide range of genres. The brilliantly spliced touches of dark humour add to the mood and also lift it.
Andy Lorimar is a really likeable, believable main character who is ably supported by an endearing quirky bunch. His banter with Pertrakis is outstanding, and bumbling duo Burns and Devlin provide the laughs. Lorimar meets psychic Doirin, who delves into the case, too.
With glimpses into the past via some revealing timeline hopping adding to the story, One Night Only is a fantastic first outing for both Andy Lorimar and G.P. Ritchie.
At first I wasn’t sure with this book as it started with so much information I was a bit unsure of who was who and what was what but as it all started to piece together… I couldn’t get enough of it!
As it all came together my mind was blown and I loved how all the information came out piece by piece and there were moments where my jaw was literally lying on the floor!
Filled with dark humour and mystery in a true Scottish style! I ended up really, really enjoying this book and I finished read it with a huge smile on my face!
I would definitely recommend this book to crime thriller fans who love some dark humour!
This is a contemporary horror set in Edinburgh during the Fringe Festival and this immediately had me hooked. G.P. Ritchie did not mess about and started this with a Magic Show aka Ritual which has someone used as a sacrifice which made me sit up and grabbed me into the story. Setting this in Scotland allowed the author to use well known locations and also allowed the reader to be in a familiar location. I loved our main character and learning his back story but also seeing the character develop throughout this novel. I am excited to see what else the author has written and what is coming in the furture.
Review time Thank you @lovebookstours and @g.p.ritchie and @nightsborderpress for my copy of one night only.
This is a very complicated plot and story, I felt it was very confusing, I feel was dragged on abit too much , but it was a very good book, I did enjoy reading it even though it did take me longer to read it, I do recommend reading it, I'm glad I stuck with it to see it all come together.
G. P. Ritchie has done an excellent job with this book. It is a perfect blend of crime and horror and houses some excellent characters. It was a slow build at first but it was all necessary to explain events further on. You could tell the author was very familiar with Edinburgh and I loved reading about the place as I’ve recently visited. I certainly recommend this book especially to those who like something a bit different!
This is my first book by G. P. Ritchie and I was drawn in by the sinister cover and intriguing blurb.
The first few chapters contain a lot of characters to get to know and you are thrown right into the murder and intrigue contained within the plot of this book. I found myself drawn into the story from the start and wanted to see how all the pieces of the puzzle fitted together so just had to keep reading.
A super grasping and nail biting detective thriller with full of captivating suspense and mystery. Will keep the reader at edge of their seat, and will give goosebumps to every reader. The superb thoughtful plot and well developed story has made this book a smooth and capturing read. Definitely recommendable. Thank you.
I loved this book, it had me intrigued from the beginning and I loved how it all unfolded. I liked our main character Andy and I also liked how his own personal story was interwoven alongside our crime.
I felt for Andy as he appeared very lonely when we first meet him and he doesn’t have a social life, just work to keep him busy. I like the relationship he has with his boss in work and the rather fraught relationship with Devlin also provided some humour!
I thought that the storyline was very unique and I wasn’t sure if it was separate crimes or whether they were related. I just couldn’t stop reading the more the storyline was developing, the more hooked I was and I needed to find out what was happening and why.
I loved the writing style and thought the varying chapter length kept things interesting as some I could fly through and others were a little more meaty.
