Elijan III has all but fallen to Chaos. Servants of the Dark Gods swarm across the world, and only a small contingent of Imperial forces remain – but as long as the Aquila flies, hope remains. And while pilot Salvatoria Grant's Valkyrie flies, she will keep fighting to return the world to Imperial control. Tasked with transporting an Astra Militarum general who may be the key to winning the war, Grant's mission takes an unpleasant turn and she finds herself in a situation out of her control and our of her comfort zone… but one that could save Elijan III.

About the author

Peter McLean was born near London in 1972, the son of a bank manager and an English teacher. He went to school in the shadow of Norwich Cathedral where he spent most of his time making up stories.

He has since grown up a bit, if not a lot, and spent 25 years working in corporate IT. He is married to Diane and is still making up stories.

He is the author of the War for the Rose Throne series, beginning with Priest of Bones, the Burned Man series, and numerous short stories for Warhammer.

On the corrupted world of Elijan III, Flight Officer Salvatoria Grant finds herself tasked with a mission vital to the flagging war effort. Piloting her Valkyrie towards a distant Imperial base and a faint glimmer of hope, she trusts to her own skills and her faith in the Emperor to see her through to survival and Imperial victory.

McLean absolutely nails the thrills and dangers of this sort of high-speed, adrenaline-fuelled story. Combine a nicely-judged pace, plenty of exhilarating airborne hi-jinks and McLean’s dark, gritty understanding of the 40k tone and what you have is an exceptional short story.

Lightning Run stands out different than a normal story in the Warhammer 40k setting. Bands of brotherhood, moments of glory and heroism are no stranger. Woman sometimes are. The price of duty painted in the shade of regret. A story of PTSD. Lightning Run is unique in that regard. It’s been shown and done in Warhammer 40k, think inquisitors pushing the line in the sand, just not in this flavor. Well done.

Rather too action-heavy for my tastes but I liked the bittersweet ending.

This read like a two hour action movie perfectly distilled down into a couple dozen pages. Salvatoria Grant’s character was really well developed. I really enjoyed reading this.

Peter McLean und Warhammer 40K? Welch eine Kombination! Und der Autor liefert genau das, was ich von ihm erwartet habe. Und von Warhammer natürlich. Auf nur wenigen Seiten schafft es McLean, das volle 40K-Programm zu liefern. Inklusive Atmosphäre und Explosionen. Und irgendwie hoffe ich, Sal in den Weiten dieses Universums noch einmal zu begegnen...

Holy crap

Not the best story. Not the best writing. Not the best character development ending. Not the best military equipment and injuries descriptions.

But damn, it’s a good story.
