The Silent Blade - by Jacob Peppers

The Downs, the poor district of the city of Avarest, is home to cutthroats and thieves, pickpockets and prostitutes, all of whom pay tribute to one of two powerful crime bosses. It is also home to Aaron Envelar, a disillusioned sellsword known as the Silent Blade, who cares nothing for the criminal overlords or their schemes, who only wants to survive and make a little coin in the process.

But when a group of unwitting thugs steal his mother’s necklace, the only link he has to his murdered parents, Aaron decides that sometimes gold isn’t enough—sometimes, blood is the only payment worth taking. And whatever else will come, this time, he will not be silent. After all, when you take everything from a man, what else does he have to lose?

The Killings at Rockman's Ford - by D.W. Hawkins

A dangerous fugitive. A deadly secret. An unwelcome champion.

For generations, the seasons have turned with indifference to the sleepy hamlet of Rockman’s Ford. Residents and visitors alike would say it’s a delightful place where terrible things don’t happen—not murder, and never sorcery. Those things happen to other people in other places.

When a man is found murdered by hostile magic, the peaceful illusion is rocked by the emergence of dark secrets.

For D’Jenn Pike, a Warlock of the Conclave, hostile magic is an everyday occurrence. When he’s asked to help find the killer, his soul is tested by the chase. With bodies mounting, D’Jenn is all that stands between Rockman’s Ford and vengeful magic, but his courage could get him hanged alongside the murderer.

The guilty must pay, but the gods have no interest in justice.

The Renegade Apprentice<>/b - by Andy Peloquin

A fight to the death. The prize: freedom.

Evren hates the endless torments and cruelties of his life as an apprentice priest. When he finds the opportunity to flee, he seizes it in both fists.

But the streets of Vothmot hold their own share of dangers. He must battle street thugs, rival gangs, even his own trusted comrades to truly be free.

Dragon Born - by Aaron Hodges

For five long years, Enala has lived in exile. And for five years she has trained, mastering the arts of war and survival. Yet she remains trapped, forbidden to leave the boundaries of the forest. Smothered by her parents, she longs for adventure, for the chance to escape the stagnation of her life. Desperate, Enala turns to the only creatures that might help. The Gold Dragons…

Cambion - by Stevie Collier

A pastor for a mother.

A demon for a father.

The devil wanted a son, and, using his evil trickery, was able to obtain one while simultaneously spitting in God's face.
Follow the path of a teen once loved by everyone who is now hated.

What makes him so different isn't just the horns that sprout from his head, but the powers the devil has bestowed upon him.

Will he use them to slaughter the followers of God? Those who so easily turned their backs on him? Will he accept his heir to the dark throne?

Or, will he use his powers to fight his serpent of a father and all his minions?

Easily a 5 Star for a great read, I just couldn't put it down!

All the stories in this compilation book were great, and they all resonated with me; some more than others. I really enjoyed Dragon Born, and Cambion; both were masterfully written and were perfect for this book. However, the story that I loved the most was The Renegade Apprentice. That story got right up under my skin. I hate bullies and those who torment others, I think that's why Renegade Apprentice reached me so well.

Evren and Daver are students lecterns of Kiro the Master; father of the gods.
As lecterns-in-training the teachers expect them to behave well and not resort to fighting in order to settle their differences. However, they are continuously pressurised into fighting in the in-house fighting team by the older boys. Evren at least, has no choice. He fights to protect his good friend Daver, who is weak and frail due to the harsh life he has had. After taking many years of harsh treatment by the older lecterns-in-training and the senior lecterns who use the combined punishments of starvation, thirst, and sexual abuse to control the students; the two boys are at the end of their endurance. On top of that, the older boys make Evren and Daver's lives an utter misery, making them fight, and beating them up constantly. When a senior lectern decides he needs to teach Evren a lesson with his personal form of 'prayers', Evren and Daver decide to escape, hoping for a new kind of life in Vothmot on the streets. It's either escape or murder the lectern when he returns. Evren says escape and Daver agrees. The rest of the story is filled with risk and fear and a life that is more difficult than either of the boys expected.

I liked all the characters in this story, they were really animated and interesting, even if some of them were the bad guys, I still found them great and in a few cases, disgustingly bad!

The lives of the young trainee lecterns were really grim and the author did a great job of relaying the horror of these young boys lives without using overtly explicit language to do so. When the two boys escaped from that hellish place I was really glad for them.

This book was a really great read. Certainly one to keep in my ebook favourites list. I will definitely look up other books by these authors.

Good mix of stories with a little something for everyone.

The Silent Blade - One man's stand against organized crime. Interesting characters, but nothing really surprising plot-wise. It's epic in how much happens in the span of one night. Jack Bauer would be impressed. Good yarn.

The Killings at Rockman's Ford - Wonderful mix of mystery and fantasy magic adventure. The characters really shine in this one, and the plot is both familiar and yet engaging. If this one doesn't send you looking for the author's other works, I'll be surprised.

The Renegade Apprentice - An adventure that manages to be epic while staying confined to a single district of a single city. That's not something that's easy to accomplish in the wider world of fantasy, where everyone expects your characters to go out fighting dragons and armies and demons. Well-written, engaging and sympathetic characters, and this has the distinction of really taking wounds into account when characters are injured.

Dragon Born - This one wasn't bad but felt like the meat had been cut out of the middle. An entire year passes in the span of a paragraph and left me with the impression that a lot more interesting things happened that we are left ignorant to. What plot remains isn't bad but it felt like the two "parts" didn't quite meet in the middle, where that year-long hole is. The dragons are a nice touch in this one, though. If you like dragons, this one will resonate with you.

Cambion - I thought I was going to really enjoy this one, but couldn't get into it. It started off like the movie "Horns," and something about it just failed to hold my attention; it may have just been the first-person narration. Don't take my word for it on this one; YMMV.

Excellent! A great collection of tales! I enjoyed everyone of them. Below are my individual reviews of each novella.

The Silent Blade - Jacob Peppers - 5 star
Impressive Body Count! I liked this story about a sell-sword who isn’t quite the monster he thinks he is. A brutal but interesting introduction to Aaron Envelar on one of his not-so-excellent days. I will have to check out more of this author’s works.

The Killing at Rockman’s Ford: A Seven Sign’s Novella - DW Hawkins - 5 stars
Interesting Story! A murder mystery that shows how wrong things can go when fear and superstition are encouraging to flourish. I definitely want to read more about D’Jenns’ adventures.

The Renegade Apprentice: A Hero of Darkness Novella - Andy Peloquin - 5 Stars
Great! The story of Evren’s origin and how he ended up on the street in Vothmot where, in Dark Blade Slayer (Hero of Darkness, Book 5), he steals the Hunter of Voramis’ purse. Read it before or after HOD #5 and the Heirs of Destiny series (which happens after HOD #5.) I love getting the answers to how characters I care about became who they are!

Dragon Born: A Novella From the Three Nations - Aaron Hodges - 5 stars
Sweet story! Enala’s life is not typical. Her days are spent in isolation from the world learning survival and fighting skills...and riding dragons! She is a typical teen and wants to return to the city and her former life there. She makes a typical teenage choice and we get to see the consequences of her action. I suspect there are many more stories about Enala and I look forward to reading them.

Cambion - Stevie Collier - 5 star
Powerful! Ira was just a ministers son, but he was so much more! An amazing story about faith, courage, and love. Very enjoyable!

Weirdly Interesting & Worth Reading

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book. And, typical for a group of short stories/novellas a variety of different authors, I'm not sure if I liked all of them well enough to read them a 2nd time (& I read almost everything multiples of times - they become old friends) but the majority of the stories will be revisited.
How would you handle a newly "blossomed" wizard who can't control his powers? Would you try to save him from a violently superstitious public or save that public from him? What if you needed to escape an unbelievably abusive situation. Would you be willing to try to save another who's not nearly as strong as you & may need your protection for years to come? What if you woke up one morning to find that your father was an incubus? Could you handle suddenly becoming half-demon?
These are just a few the quandaries facing some of our "heroes." The stories aren't happy ending, guaranteed to make you feel good tales. They twist and turn. They go in strange directions. They may have uncomfortable subject matter. But read them anyway. They're interesting little things that kept me turning the pages. And I'll be back again...& again....& again.

This was my first introduction to these authors and I'm excited to say I've just found 5 new favourite authors! Each story does an amazing job of setting the scene, explaining the world, and giving you enough excitement to never let the story drag or get dull.

If you're looking for some new indie fantasy authors, you've just found them.

My only problem is deciding which author to continue reading first.

Some brilliance, some mediocrity.

As is always the case in this sort of compilation, there are some stories better than others. Which are seen as which depends wholly on the reader, but I found the collection well worth the small price, and I have a couple of new author's back catalogues to tackle so I'm happy.

Loved this book

So many different stories in this book, they were different and short but right to the point. Wow what imagination it took to bring these stories to life and to be gripped by them. Catha Watkins Reese

This is the first (Indie) Fantasy book I've read and I was pleasantly surprised. A book with five short stories each with different authors is a great way to be introduced to a new genre!

The Silent Blade - by Jacob Peppers
The Killings at Rockman's Ford - by D.W. Hawkins
The Renegade Apprentice - by Andy Peloquin
Dragon Born - by Aaron Hodges
Cambion - by Stevie Collier

Each author was able to keep me easily engaged and wanting more. They drew me into their character's fantasy world and made me feel like I was apart of their stories. Each taught me about different sub genres and where I wanted to go next. I've decided the darker and more grim the better.

Ratings for each story:

THE SILENT BLADE by Jacob Peppers
2/5 stars

The main character, Aaron, tracks down a missing necklace. Nothing really stood out in this story to me. What I didn't appreciate is how the only female characters in this story are prostitutes, who are only there to give Aaron a chance to reject them after they pretty much drool all over him. Did not feel nice as a female reader, especially since this novella is so male-dominated. There's also a really grisly torture scene that turned my stomach. I didn't realize just how Adult this fantasy would be. I hate to be so negative but this one wasn't for me.

THE KILLINGS AT ROCKMAN'S FORD by C.W. Hawkins
3/5 stars

I liked the plot of this story and the two main characters. Also appreciated how there were a whopping TWO female characters, both of whom had names and agency in the story. The magic was also interesting although I didn't quite understand what was going on, but I do tend to have a hard time following plots so it could just be me. Overall this one was an enjoyable read.

THE RENEGADE APPRENTICE by Andy Peloquin
4/5 stars

My goodness, this was a wild ride. And it sure does take dark fantasy to a new level of bleak. Trigger warning for sexual abuse (implied, but heavily). The main character is extremely likable, and giving him Davey to take care of makes him even better to root for. And DANG can the author write a good fight scene. I normally loathe them, but I could pretty much visualize these ones. I can just picture him punching his way around his living room to figure out what's happening. :) This was a VERY strong short story with lots of twists and good character development for the main two.
